Members of several genera in the digenean superfamily Microphalloidea, namely Renschetrema , Rohdetrema , Cryptotropa , Cephalouterina and Pseudocryptotropa , are characterized by an unusual dorsal position of the genital atrium. In the absence of phylogenetic data, their systematic position has been unstable. In the most recent taxonomic revision of the Microphalloidea, they were housed in three different families. We studied the morphology and obtained DNA sequences of several microphallolideans with a dorsal genital pore, collected from vertebrates in Southeast Asia and South America. We used sequences of the nuclear 28S gene to infer a superfamily-level phylogeny and sequences of the mitochondrial cox1 gene for family-level phylogeny and species-level comparisons. Based on the combination of molecular phylogenetic data and morphological features, we restore the Cryptotropidae and synonymize the Renschetrematidae with the Cryptotropidae. We erect new genera Paracryptotropa gen. nov. and Armadoatrium gen. nov. , provide amended diagnoses of the Cryptotropidae and Renschetrema and provide keys to the identification of genera within the family. We resurrect the genus Novetrema , previously synonymized with Pseudocryptotropa , and remove Renschetrema indicum from Renschetrema. We describe four new species from lizards in Vietnam and birds in the Philippines and Peru. Uncontrolled chemotherapy‐induced nausea and vomiting can reduce patients' quality of life and may result in premature discontinuation of chemotherapy. Although nausea and vomiting are commonly grouped together, research has shown that antiemetics are clinically effective against chemotherapy‐induced vomiting (CIV) but less so against chemotherapy‐induced nausea (CIN). Nausea remains a problem for up to 68% of patients who are prescribed guideline‐consistent antiemetics. Despite the high prevalence of CIN, relatively little is known regarding its etiology independent of CIV. This review summarizes a metagenomics approach to the study and treatment of CIN with the goal of encouraging future research. Metagenomics focuses on genetic risk factors and encompasses both human (ie, host) and gut microbial genetic variation. Little work to date has focused on metagenomics as a putative biological mechanism of CIN. Metagenomics has the potential to be a powerful tool in advancing scientific understanding of CIN by identifying new biological pathways and intervention targets. The investigation of metagenomics in the context of well‐established demographic, clinical, and patient‐reported risk factors may help to identify patients at risk and facilitate the prevention and management of CIN. In this review, a comprehensive metagenomic approach is proposed for investigating genetic risk factors that encompasses both human (ie, host) and gut microbial genetic variation. An overview of current knowledge about chemotherapy‐induced nausea and vomiting, including the neurobiology, treatment, and associated risk factors, is described after a summary of genetic and gut microbial associations with chemotherapy‐induced nausea and other gastrointestinal toxicities. The Cyathocotylidae Mühling, 1896 is a small but broadly distributed family of digeneans parasitic in a wide range of vertebrate definitive hosts, from fish to mammals. Despite existing taxonomic questions, only a few studies have generated DNA sequence data from cyathocotylids, and only a single publication included sequence data from a cyathocotylid parasitic in snakes. Four genera are known to infect snakes: GogateaLutz, 1935, Szidatia Dubois, 1938, MesostephanoidesDubois, 1951, and SerpentostephanusSudarikov, 1961. Members of these genera were known from only Asia and Africa. In the present study, we describe 2 new species of Gogatea from snakes in Australia and 1 from Vietnam. The new species from Vietnam described herein is the first member of the genus that lacks a ventral sucker. We used partial sequences of the nuclear large ribosomal subunit (28S) and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) genes to explore phylogenetic relationships among cyathocotylids and species differentiation. In addition, this is the first report of a cyathocotylid from snakes in Australia, thus posing interesting questions regarding the dispersal and historical biogeography of these parasites. Cyathocotylid genera from snakes have a long, convoluted taxonomic history. The genera Gogatea, Mesostephanoides, and Szidatia were distinguished from each other based on very small morphological differences. Therefore, the validity of Szidatia and Mesostephanoides was often questioned in the literature. Based on the detailed morphological analysis of our freshly collected high-quality specimens and comparison with published information, we synonymize Mesostephanoides and Szidatia with Gogatea., (© American Society of Parasitologists 2024.)

To understand dynamic interplay between the human microbiome and host during health and disease, we analyzed the microbial composition, temporal dynamics, and associations with host multi-omics, immune and clinical markers of microbiomes from four body sites in 86 participants over six years. We found that microbiome stability and individuality are body-site-specific and heavily influenced by the host. The stool and oral microbiome were more stable than the skin and nasal microbiomes, possibly due to their interaction with the host and environment. Also, we identified individual-specific and commonly shared bacterial taxa, with individualized taxa showing greater stability. Interestingly, microbiome dynamics correlated across body sites, suggesting systemic coordination influenced by host-microbial-environment interactions. Notably, insulin-resistant individuals showed altered microbial stability and associations between microbiome, molecular markers, and clinical features, suggesting their disrupted interaction in metabolic disease. Our study offers comprehensive views of multi-site microbial dynamics and their relationship with host health and disease., Study Highlights: The stability of the human microbiome varies among individuals and body sites.Highly individualized microbial genera are more stable over time.At each of the four body sites, systematic interactions between the environment, the host and bacteria can be detected.Individuals with insulin resistance have lower microbiome stability, a more diversified skin microbiome, and significantly altered host-microbiome interactions.

Aim: To develop a novel Helicobacter pylori ( H. pylori ) CagA antibody enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) suitable for detecting serum anti-CagA antibodies with high sensitivity., Methods: Recombinant East Asian-type CagA protein was purified and immobilized for ELISA. Serum samples from 217 Vietnamese individuals (110 H. pylori -infected and 107 uninfected individuals) were applied. Conventional ELISA from Western-type CagA and our East Asian-type CagA ELISA were evaluated by comparing 38 subjects with the Western-type genotype and 72 subjects with the East Asian-type cagA genotype. Histological scores of the gastric mucosa were determined using the updated Sydney System to examine the relationship with anti-CagA antibody titers., Results: Recombinant 70-100 kDa fragments were immobilized on the ELISA plate. In ROC analysis, the area under the curve of our East Asian-type CagA ELISA was comparable to that of conventional CagA ELISA. The sensitivity of the two ELISAs differed depending on the cagA genotype. The sensitivity of East Asian-type CagA ELISA was higher for subjects infected with East Asian-type cagA H. pylori ( P < 0.001), and the sensitivity of the conventional CagA ELISA tended to be higher for subjects infected with Western cagA H. pylori ( P = 0.056). The titer of anti-CagA antibody tended to correlate with monocyte infiltration scores ( r = 0.25, P = 0.058) and was inversely correlated with H. pylori density ( r = -0.26, P = 0.043)., Conclusion: The novel ELISA is useful to detect anti-CagA antibodies in East Asian countries, and the titer may be a marker for predicting chronic gastritis.
