A simple quadrilateral shell element is proposed in this work to study large deformations and large rotations of membrane/plate/shell structures. There are three merit characters in this element: locking-free; immune to mesh distortions; and robust to surface tessellations. Numerical issues in plates/shell elements such as shear-locking and thickness-locking problems are resolved, and quadrilateral area coordinates are adopted to solve the mesh distortion issues. This element can be adopted to curved shell structures, and warped deformations can be well described. Moreover, even if a shell structure cannot be easily tessellated by high quality quadrilateral polygons, it can still be discretized by a mesh consisting of high-quality triangular and quadrilateral elements, then this element can work together with a corresponding triangular element to provide accurate results on this combined mesh, and the degree of freedom for the discretized system is no more than several times of the number of nodes. Numerical tests validate the effectiveness, efficiency and universality of this element in engineering scenarios.

The retention of triterpenoids in the C18 column and apparent formation constants of triterpenoids with cyclodextrins (CDs) were studied using HPLC. As the effective mobile phase additives, CDs can improve the separation of triterpenoid glycosides (asiaticoside B, madecassoside and asiaticoside) and reduce the retention of triterpenoids, and it is attributed to that triterpenoids forms a 1:1 inclusion complexes with CDs. The apparent formation constants of these complexes depend on the structure of triterpenoids, as well as on the substituent group and the hydrophobic cavity size of CDs. Triterpenoid glycosides had less apparent formation constants with HP-β-CD and Glu-β-CD, which might be related that hydroxypropyl group and glucose group in the structure of HP-β-CD and Glu-β-CD were unfaver to formation of the inclusion complexes. Asiaticoside B had larger apparent formation constants with CDs than madecassoside and asiaticoside. Larger apparent association constants of triterpenoid acids (madecassic acid and asiatic acid) were obtained with γ-CD than β-CD and its derivatives, which are related that triterpenoid acids fit well into the γ-CD cavity, and form relatively stable inclusion complexes. The ∆G (25 °C), ∆H and ∆S reveal that the inclusion processes between triterpenoids and CDs were not spontaneous, exothermic, and enthalpically driven. In addition, the usefulness of CDs for simultaneous analysis of five triterpenoids in HPLC and drug delivery vehicles was described.

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is an important ecological security barrier for China and, indeed, for all Asia. Land use and land cover changes in the plateau not only affect the ecological environment and regional development of the plateau itself but also affect the stability and economic development of ecosystems in eastern China and other parts of Asia. This paper is based on an examination of the achievements of land use and cover change in the TP and a reanalysis of data including that of Climate Change Initiative Land Cover from 1992 to 2015; land use data provided by the Resource and Environmental Science Data Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences for 1995, 2000, 2010 and 2015; and statistical data from Qinghai and Tibet. The paper analyzes the overall characteristics of land use and land cover changes in the TP and the spatial and temporal processes and their driving forces of land use and land cover change in typical regions and land types. This research is important not only for land change science and global change research but also for the promotion of the plateau and its adjacent areas. In recent decades, research has shown that the land use and land cover structure of the TP is stable, and the proportion of first-level land use type change was less than 7% from 1992 to 2015. Most of these changes are single time changes, with multiple land change occurring only in 1.85% of the total change area. The quality of land cover has been improved in areas where no land type change occurred. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) showed an increasing trend in 24.45% of the area and a decreasing trend in only 1.31% of the area. The area of cultivated land, forest, grassland, wetland, and construction land on the plateau has increased, whereas bare land, glacier, and snow cover area has decreased. In most parts of the TP, the quality of alpine grassland has improved; however, in some areas, it has degraded at a local scale. Most of the woodland has recovered well after phased changes. Prior to 1980, there was a rapid increase in cultivated land area, but this has since become stable with only minor increases. However, the utilization intensity of cultivated land has increased significantly in recent years. Construction land has expanded significantly, and the recent growth rate has accelerated since 2010. Both the increasing speed of change and the construction land area in Qinghai Province are higher than in Tibet. There has been a general trend of a slight decrease in bare land change. In densely populated areas in the Yellow River-Huangshui River Valley and the One-River-Two-Tributaries area, land types that are closely related to human utilization such as construction land, cultivated land, and artificial woodland have undergone obvious changes. In pastoral areas, such as the Northern Tibetan Plateau and the Source Regions of The Three Rivers, overgrazing and ecological construction have significantly affected land cover. In the Qomolangma National Nature Preserve, land use types are diverse; changes are complex; and land cover is more sensitive to both climate change and human activity. There are limitations to the study of land change in the plateau, such as the difficulty of meeting the needs of ecological construction with existing data and the lack of in-depth understanding of the process of land use change and its environmental effects. Field monitoring and remote sensing techniques must be strengthened in order to clarify the process of land use intensity change and its impact on the ecological environment of the TP. These improvements will better serve the construction of an ecological security barrier and the sustainable development of the region.

Aim: Invasive alien species (IAS) threaten ecosystems and humans worldwide, and future climate change may accelerate the expansion of IAS. Predicting the suitable distributions of IAS can prevent their further expansion. Ageratina adenophora is a invasive weed over 30 countries in tropical and subtropical regions. However, the potential suitable distribution of A. adenophora remains unclear along with its response to climate change. This study explored and mapped the current and future potential distributions of Ageratina adenophora. Location: Global Taxa: Asteraceae A. adenophora (Spreng.) R.M.King & H.Rob. Commonly known as Crofton weed. Methods: Based on A. adenophora occurrence data and climate data, we predicted its potential distribution of this weed under current and future (four RCPs in 2050 and 2070) by MaxEnt model. We used ArcGIS 10.4 to explore the distribution characteristics of this weed and the ‘ecospat’ package in R to analyse its altitudinal distribution changes. Results: The area under the curve value (>0.9) indicated excelled model performance. Among environment factors, Mean Temperature of Coldest Quarter contributed most to the model. Globally, the suitable habitat for A.adenophora invasion decreased under climate change scenarios, although regional increase were observed, including in six biodiversity hotspot regions. The potential suitable habitat of A.adenophora under climate change moved toward regions with higher elevation. Main Conclusions: Temperature was the most important variable influencing the distribution of A. Adenophora. Under the background of warming climate, the potential distribution range of A.adenophora will shrink globally but increase regionally. The distribution of A.adenophora will shift toward higher elevation under climate change. Mountain ecosystems are of special concern as they are rich in biodiversity and sensitive to climate change, and increasing human activities provide more opportunities for IAS invasion.

Objectives. We aimed to observe the protective effect of κ opioid receptor (κ-OR) agonist on myocardial injury in heart failure (HF) rats and its effect on Ca2+-SERCA2a and to explore the regulatory mechanism with the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway. Methods. 50 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into the following groups: the sham operation group (sham group), HF model group (HF group), HF+κ-OR agonist U50488 group (HU group), HF+U50488H+novel calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) agonist (oleic acid) (HUO group), and HF+U50488H+Nrf2 inhibitor (HUM group). The HF rat’s model was established through surgical ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery and the exhausting swimming exercise. After that, rat’s cardiac function was monitored by echocardiography. HE and MASSON staining was used to detect the myocardial injury, and TUNEL staining was used to detect the myocardial apoptosis. ELISA was performed to detect the biomarkers of oxidative stress. Moreover, the distribution of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and Nrf2 was detected under immunofluorescence. The expression of sarco/endoplasmic reticulum calcium (Ca2+) ATPase (SERCA) 2a, calmodulin, endoplasmic reticulum stress- (ERS-) related proteins, and Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway-related proteins were detected by Western Blotting. Results. κ-OR agonist U50488H can significantly enhance rat’s cardiac function, reduce the injury and apoptosis of myocardial cells, and alleviate endoplasmic reticulum stress injury in HF rats via upregulating the SERCA2a expression and inhibiting the Ca2+ influx. Furthermore, U50488H could also inhibit the phosphorylation of CaMKII and cAMP-response element binding protein (CREB). Additionally, administration of CaMKII-specific agonist could partially block the therapeutic effect of κ-OR agonist on the myocardium of HF rats. Interestingly, the antagonist of Nrf2 could also significantly reverse the therapeutic effect of κ-OR agonist. Therefore, these results suggested that the effect of U50488H on HF rats is dependent on regulating CaMKII phosphorylation and activating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. Conclusion. κ-OR agonists U50488H can improve ERS in cardiomyocytes and relieve myocardial injury in HF rats through activating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway and regulating Ca2+-SERCA2a to inhibit Ca2+ influx.

The objective of this study was to construct a rapid, high-throughput, and biosafety-compatible screening method for Bacillus anthracis and Bacillus cereus based on matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). MALDI-TOF MS coupled to ClinProTools was used to discover MALDI-TOF MS biomarker peaks and generate a classification model based on a genetic algorithm (GA) to differentiate between different Bacillus anthracis and Bacillus cereus isolates. Thirty Bacillus anthracis and 19 Bacillus cereus strains were used to construct and analyze the model, and 40 Bacillus strains were used for validation. For the GA screening model, the cross-validation values, which reflect the ability of the model to handle variability among the test spectra, and the recognition capability values, which reflect the model's ability to correctly identify its component spectra, were all 100%. This model contained 10 biomarker peaks (m/z 3,339.9, 3,396.3, 3,682.4, 5,476.7, 6,610.6, 6,680.1, 7,365.3, 7,792.4, 9,475.8, and 10,934.1) used to correctly identify 28 Bacillus anthracis and 12 Bacillus cereus isolates from 40 Bacillus isolates, with a sensitivity and specificity of 100%. With the obvious advantages of being rapid, highly accurate, and highly sensitive and having a low cost and high throughput, MALDI-TOF MS ClinProTools is a powerful and reliable tool for screening Bacillus anthracis and Bacillus cereus strains.

Vegetation forms a main component of the terrestrial biosphere owing to its crucial role in land cover and climate change, which has been of wide concern for experts and scholars. In this study, we used MODIS (moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer) NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) data, land cover data, meteorological data, and DEM (Digital Elevation Model) data to do vegetation change and its relationship with climate change. First, we investigated the spatio-temporal patterns and variations of vegetation activity in the Koshi River Basin (KRB) in the central Himalayas from 2000 to 2018. Then, we combined NDVI change with climate factors using the linear method to examine their relationship, after that we used the literature review method to explore the influence of human activities to vegetation change. At the regional scale, the NDVIGS (Growth season NDVI) significantly increased in the KRB in 2000&ndash, 2018, with significant greening over croplands in KRB in India. Further, the croplands and forest in the KRB in Nepal were mainly influenced by human interference. For example, improvements in agricultural fertilization and irrigation facilities as well as the success of the community forestry program in the KRB in Nepal increased the NDVIGS of the local forest. Climate also had a certain impact on the increase in NDVIGS. A significant negative correlation was observed between NDVIGS trend and the annual minimum temperature trend (TMN) in the KRB in India, but an insignificant positive correlation was noted between it and the total annual precipitation trend (PRE). NDVIGS significantly decreased over a small area, mainly around Kathmandu, due to urbanization. Increases in NDVIGS in the KRB have thus been mainly affected by human activities, and climate change has helped increase it to a certain extent.

This paper presents a data-driven regression model to predict the life cycle of lithium-ion battery. The model is built based on five different key features derived from discharging voltage, current, time, and skin temperature. These sets of data are commonly available in most Battery Management Systems (BMS), which makes the proposed regression model widely applicable to various battery systems. The five-key-feature-based battery model is evaluated and validated all through the paper and is proved to have high prediction accuracy of battery life cycles. The proposed regression model can be utilized for real-time life cycle prediction without the need of historical data.

This paper presents an evaluation of switched-mode control for battery backup unit (BBU) in data center to realize Busbar voltage regulation and battery impedance detection. There are two control modes in the presented BBU control system. In control mode I, the Busbar voltage is regulated at the desired reference value by regulating the duty cycle of DC-DC power converter. In the control mode II, the BBU is bypassed from Busbar and connected to a test load. During mode II, both the DC impedance or AC impedance of BBU can be measured online. The DC impedance can be measured through changing the load current with adding a pulse signal to the duty cycle of the power converter. While the AC impedance can be measured by adding a perturbation signal at a given frequency to the duty cycle of power converter to perturb voltage and current of li-ion battery in BBU. The DC impedance or AC impedance can be further utilized to evaluate the BBU State-of-Health (SOH). With the presented switched-mode control, only one DC-DC power converter is required to realize Busbar voltage regulation and impedance detection, which reduces the volume, cost and size of BBU. Proof of concept results are provided in the paper to evaluate the performance of the presented switched-mode control in BBU.

The activity inhibition of fungi by ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) has shown huge potential applications in the area of hygienic coatings. However, the inhibition efficiency was limited due to the agglomeration of NPs. To obtain well-dispersed and highly stabilized ZnO nanofluids, ZnO NPs were capped with four kinds of surfactants under ultrasonication. The capping procedure was optimized by varying the dosage of surfactants, the ultrasonic duration, ultrasonic power and temperature. Capped ZnO nanofluids were then used for the inhibition of Trichoderma viride. The influence on the activity of the capping conditions, illumination, ZnO NPs content, humidity and temperature were investigated in details. Results suggest that well-dispersed ZnO NPs were obtained through ultrasonic-assisted functionalization using sodium polyacrylate as a dispersant. Moreover, capped ZnO nanofluids revealed long-term stability at pH above 6. The optimal capping procedure was obtained for a sonication power of 250 W, treatment duration of 40 min, dosage of 0.4% and temperature of 60 °C. Antifungal tests indicated that capped ZnO NPs showed an inhibition ability versus T. viride even in the dark. The antifungal ability of ZnO NPs increased with the increasing ZnO content, and humidity and temperature only affected the growth of fungi. Capped ZnO NPs showed an excellent antifungal performance even in the circumstance that was beneficial for the fungi growth (temperature of 30 °C, humidity of 95%), demonstrating the antimicrobial capability in practical applications.

Background: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a chronic degenerative disease involving cartilage and surrounding tissues. It causes a huge burden to social and medical resources and seriously affects people's living and working ability. In recent years, people have become increasingly interested in the application of Chinese medicine monomers to treat KOA. Among them, icariin plays an important role in the clinical treatment of KOA. Therefore, to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of icariin in the treatment of KOA, we conducted this study to provide a new basis for the clinical treatment of KOA. Methods: We propose a systematic search of the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, and China Biomedical databases for all randomized controlled trials examining the use of icariin in the treatment of KOA patients up to October 20, 2021. The screening and data extraction processes will be performed independently by 2 researchers. We will use the Cochrane risk bias assessment tool to evaluate the quality of the studies that met the inclusion criteria. The data will be statistically analyzed using RevMan5.3 software. Result: This study will provide high-quality evidence for the effectiveness and safety of icariin in the treatment of KOA. Conclusion: The purpose of this study was to explore the efficacy of icariin in the treatment of KOA and to provide clinicians and patients with new treatment strategies. This paper studies the finite-time stabilization problem for a class of dynamic positioning ship with the delay, actuator failure and saturation. First, we develop an input-delay system on the dynamic positioning ship, and transform it into an equivalent state-delay one. Then, based on the equivalent form and introducing new variables, a controlled system on dynamic positioning ship is obtained. Thirdly, by applying the back-stepping technique and finite-time Lyapunov function method, a finite-time stabilization result on the ship is obtained and a control design procedure is given. Finally, the simulation results show the effectiveness of the finite-time controller proposed in this paper.

Monitoring and mapping the sensitivity of grassland ecosystems to climate change is crucial for developing sustainable local grassland management strategies. The sensitivity of alpine grasslands to climate change is considered to be high on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP), yet little is known about its spatial pattern, and particularly the variations between different elevations. Here, based on the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and three climate variables (air temperature, precipitation, and solar radiation), we modified a vegetation sensitivity index-approach to capture the relative sensitivity of alpine grassland productivity to climate variability on the QTP during 2000–2016. The results show that alpine grasslands on the southern QTP are more sensitive to climate variability overall, and that the climate factors driving alpine grassland dynamics are spatially heterogeneous. Alpine grasslands on the southern QTP are more sensitive to temperature variability, those on the northeastern QTP display strong responses to precipitation variability, and those on the central QTP are primarily influenced by a combination of radiation and temperature variability. The sensitivity of alpine grasslands to climate variability increases significantly along an elevational gradient, especially to temperature variability. This study underscores that alpine grasslands at higher elevations on the QTP are more sensitive to climate variability than those at lower elevations at the regional scale.

Globally, there is a noticeable increasing trend in farmland abandonment, which directly affects farmers' livelihood and food security. The abandonment status, its determinants and impact vary by spatial and socioeconomic context. In order to study this important issue, we selected three different villages representing three ecological regions (Mountain, Hill, and Tarai) in the Koshi River Basin (KRB), and applied two methods: the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and a social survey. The UAV captured 3711 images and we carried out 162 households' survey with structured questionnaires. Pix4Dmapper and ArcGIS tools were used for combining and processing the images. On-screen digitalization and binary logistic regression (BLR) were applied to examine the status and determinants of farmland abandonment. The results show a higher proportion of farmland abandonment in the villages located in the Hill and Mountain regions compared to those in the Tarai region. Almost 10.3% area of total land and 22.3% area of total farmland was abandoned in the Hill village. The Tarai village had the least farm abandonment (3.7%). Farmers perceived that climate change (less precipitation, increasing temperatures, and drought), shifting occupations, crops damaged by wildlife, migration, lack of irrigation, and a labor shortage are the leading determinants of farmland abandonment. These factors varied slightly across the different ecological regions. The BLR model was a good fit with Nagelkerke's R2 = 0.776, with a correct model prediction (87.7%) and p = 0.032. The results from the regression model suggest that an increase in temperature (p = 0.000), decrease in rainfall (p = 0.001), lack of machinery used for farm-work (p = 0.000), lack of irrigation (p = 0.000), and reduction of labor-force (p = 0.000) are the main contributing determinants of farmland abandonment. This synergy of high-resolution remote sensing and farmers' perception-based findings facilitates the improvement of land-use governmental policies to improve farmers' quality of life and build sustainable farmland management.

Quantifying the impact of climate change and human activities on grassland dynamics is an essential step for developing sustainable grassland ecosystem management strategies. However, the direction and magnitude of climate change and human activities in driving alpine grassland dynamic over the Tibetan Plateau remain under debates. Here, we systematically reviewed the relevant studies on the methods, main conclusions, and causes for the inconsistency in distinguishing the respective contribution of climatic and anthropogenic forces to alpine grassland dynamic. Both manipulative experiments and traditional statistical analysis show that climate warming increase biomass in alpine meadows and decrease in alpine steppes, while both alpine steppes and meadows benefit from an increase in precipitation or soil moisture. Overgrazing is a major factor for the degradation of alpine grassland in local areas with high level of human activity intensity. However, across the entire Tibetan Plateau and its subregions, four views characterize the remaining controversies: alpine grassland changes are primarily due to (1) climatic force, (2) nonclimatic force, (3) combination of anthropogenic and climatic force, or (4) alternation of anthropogenic and climatic force. Furthermore, these views also show spatial inconsistencies. Differences on the source and quality of remote sensing products, the structure and parameter of models, and overlooking the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of human activity intensity contribute to current disagreements. In this review, we highlight the necessity for taking the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of human activity intensity into account in the models of attribution assessment, and the importance for accurate validation of climatic and anthropogenic contribution to alpine grassland variation at multiple scales for future studies.

In recent years, Beijing has been facing serious environmental problems. As an important cause of environmental problems, a further study of the factors influencing CO2 emissions in Beijing has important significance for the social and economic development of Beijing. In this paper, Cointegration and Granger causality test were proposed to select influencing factors of CO2 emissions prediction in Beijing, the influencing factors with different leading lengths were checked as well, and the genetic algorithm (GA) was used to optimize the initial weight and threshold values of a support vector machine (SVM) and the new SVM optimized by GA (GA-SVM) was established to predict the CO2 emissions of Beijing from 2016–2020 with scenario analysis. Through the comparison of 36 kinds of development scenarios, we found that economic growth, resident population growth and energy intensity enhancement were the major growth factors of carbon emissions, of which the contributions exceed 0.5% in all kinds of development scenarios. Finally, this paper put forward some reasonable policy recommendations for the control of CO2 emissions.

Oral mucositis is one of the most frequent complications after chemotherapy, occurring in approximately 52 to 80% of children receiving treatment for cancer. Recently, it has been suggested that the use of low-energy laser could reduce the grade of oral mucositis and alleviate the symptoms. In 2014, Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer/International Society of Oral Oncology has recommended low-level laser therapy in prevention of mucositis for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation patients because of its beneficial effects in majority of recent studies. However, the recommendation was made for adult patients, not pediatric patients. Data about the effect of low-level laser therapy in pediatric patients is limited. This study aims to synthesize the available clinical evidences on the effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in the prevention and treatment of chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis (OM). A meta-analysis was performed using trials identified through the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, MEDLINE, Web of Science, China Biology Medicine (CBM), Wanfang Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Data on occurrence, duration, and severity of oral mucositis were collected. All randomized controlled studies and clinical controlled studies comparing LLLT to routine qualified prevention or treatment during or after chemotherapy were critically appraised and analyzed. We found 8 qualified clinical trials with a total of 373 pediatric patients; the methodological quality was acceptable. After prophylactic LLLT, the odds ratio for developing OM was significantly lower compared with placebo(OR = 0.50, 95% CI 0.29 to 0.87, P = 0.01), the odds ratio for developing grade III OM or worse was statistically significantly lower compared with placebo (OR = 0.30, 95% CI (0.10, 0.90), P = 0.03), and the OM severity was statistically significantly lower compared with placebo (SMD = - 0.56, 95% CI (- 0.98, - 0.14), P = 0.009). For therapeutic LLLT, the OM severity was significantly reduced compared to routine care (SMD = - 1.18, 95% CI (- 1.52, - 0.84), P 0.00001). Oral pain was also reduced after LLLT over routine care (MD = - 0.73, 95% CI (- 1.36, - 0.11), P = 0.02).Prophylactic LLLT reduces mucositis and severe mucositis and decreases the average severity of oral mucositis in pediatric and young patients with cancer. Therapeutic LLLT also reduces the average severity of oral mucositis and oral pain. Further research should investigate the optimal parameter of LLLT in pediatric and young patients, and studies with higher methodological quality should be performed. What is known: • Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) was recommended by Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer/International Society of Oral Oncology; however, evidences about LLLT on oral mucositis in pediatric and young patients were insufficient and lack supportive synthesized data. • Recently, there have been several new RCTs or CCTs for pediatric patients or young adults. What is new: • Prophylactic LLLT reduces the occurrence of mucositis and severe mucositis and decreases the average severity of oral mucositis in pediatric and young patients. • Therapeutic LLLT reduces the average severity of oral mucositis and oral pain.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are used as antifungal agents and imparted in starch paste. The zinc oxide nanoparticles are synthesized using starch as a stabilizing agent under sonochemical irradiation, and then used in the preparation of ZnO NPs-based starch paste. The effects of starch and ultrasonic irradiation on the formation of ZnO NPs are subsequently investigated. Characterization by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy reveals that ZnO NPs synthesized under an optimal condition are highly dispersed and well-defined crystals with diameters of approximately 5 nm. The antifungal performance of ZnO NPs-based starch paste is evaluated under a high temperature and humidity environment, and is compared with traditional fungicides, alum, and pure terephthalic acid (PTA). In addition, the paste shows negligible toxicity and deterioration to the mechanical properties of the mounted paper. Lastly, the paper mounted with ZnO NPs-based starch paste shows superior antifungal performance, an essential property protecting paper documents from mold growth, compared to pristine starch paste.

Background Although cancer-related fatigue has been given priority status for study in Western countries, unfortunately, it has not received enough attention in China. Based on a different cultural perspective, qualitative study regarding cancer-related fatigue in China can provide a cultural context for enriching the system of knowledge about fatigue. Objectives To explore the real-life experiences of fatigue from the perspectives of Chinese Children with leukaemia. Design A phenomenological study. Setting A paediatric haematology oncology department of a regional tertiary children's hospital in Shanghai, China. Participants A total of 14 children and adolescents with leukaemia, aged 7–18 years old, without known psychiatric or developmental disorders, was selected by purposive sampling. Methods Four focus group interviews were conducted with nine open-ended, semi-structured questions. Findings Cancer-related fatigue is a common and distressing issue for Chinese children and adolescents with leukaemia. Three themes were finally generated: ‘fatigue is an open interpretation among children and adolescents', ‘fatigue is not a single-dimensional aspect', and ‘struggles with fatigue and balancing life suffering'. Fatigue, which is closely related to physical, psychological and situational factors, has negative affects on the participants physically, psychologically and on their cognitive well-being, and can impact the family, school and social interaction of children with leukaemia. Conclusions Children and adolescents could easily distinguish cancer-related fatigue from normal fatigue. The participants' message to health professionals is that fatigue is a multidimensional and multifactorial symptom that should be comprehensively understood and managed. The findings provide insight and direction for clinical practice and research regarding intervention development and education plans for cancer-related fatigue for paediatric oncology patients.

To make progress toward an efficient gene vector for cancer gene therapy, a novel nonviral vector of polybutylcyanoacrylate nanoparticles (PBCA NPs) was developed. Cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) was used to modify the surface of PBCA NPs, and then the plasmid DNA (pDNA) of pAFP-TK was wrapped into PBCA-CTAB NPs. Atomic force microscopy and zeta potential demonstrated that PBCA-CTAB NPs were 80–200 nm in diameter and had +15.6 mV positive surface charges. Assay using 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5–diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide showed that PBCA-CTAB NPs had less cytotoxicity to 3T3 cells than HepG2 cells. The analysis of PBCA-CTAB-DNA complexes could not only protect DNA from degradation by DNase I, it could also transfer pDNA into targeted cells with high transfection efficiency. Furthermore, when PBCA-CTAB NPs combined with suicide gene pAFP-TK, α-fetoprotein-positive cells transfected by it were highly sensitive to ganciclovir treatment, and cell survival declined precipitously. Therefore, this target strategy using a pAFP-TK/GCV suicide gene therapy system in which PBCA-CTAB NPs serve as gene delivery vectors explores a promising area for α-fetoprotein-positive hepatocellular carcinoma and associated carcinoma therapy.

Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) is correlated with insulin resistance and islet‑cell function. In the present study, the sub‑cellular localization and role of ER protein 29 (Erp29) were investigated in an in vitro ERS model of islet beta cells. The INS‑1 islet cell line was treated with various concentrations of tunicamycin to establish the ERS model. Immunofluorescence microscopy demonstrated that Erp29 and anti‑ER marker protein calnexin were co‑localized in NIH3T3 cells, suggesting that Erp29 is localized to the ER. The ERS model induced by tunicamycin showed significantly increased expression of binding immunoglobulin protein (BIP)/glucose‑regulated protein 78 (Grp78), which is a marker for ERS, and the expression of Erp29 was also increased at the mRNA and protein levels. Of note, ERS was blocked following small interfering RNA‑mediated silencing of Erp29 expression, as indicated by reduced BIP/Grp78 expression. As an ER protein, Erp29 may have an important role in ERS in islet beta cells.

To describe the prevalence and population structure of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria that colonize pigs at slaughterhouses in northeastern China, nose swabs were collected from pigs in two slaughterhouses in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, China in 2009.S. aureus isolates were characterized by multilocus sequence typing (MLST), spa typing, SCCmec typing, antimicrobial susceptibility testing and pvl gene detection. A total of 200S. aureus isolates were collected from 590 pigs (33.9%, 200/590), of which 162(81%, 162/200) were methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) and 38 (19%, 38/200) were methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Ninety-nine of the MSSA isolates (99/162,61.1%) were ST398, which represented the dominant sequence type overall. Eighty-seven isolates were ST9 (87/200, 43.5%), and all MRSA belonged to that sequence type which consisted of the spa types t899 and t2922. Among the MSSA strains, t034, t899 and t4358 were the most dominant spa types (139/162,85.8%). All MRSA isolates harbored SCCmec type IVb. The pvl gene was only detected in 3 ST7/t2119 MSSA isolates. All MRSA but more importantly also 82.7% (134/162) of the MSSA isolates were resistant to six or more antibiotics. Moreover, a novel resistance determinant-lsa(E) was identified among 22% (44/200) of all isolates. In conclusion, pigs in northeast China are frequently colonized with ST398 MSSA. MRSA with this sequence type, typically associated with pigs in Europe, was not found. High levels of multiple antibiotic resistance among MRSA isolates as well as MSSA isolates are a public health concern. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier GmbH.
