Abstract Thermoelectrics converting heat and electricity directly attract broad attentions. To enhance the thermoelectric figure of merit, zT, one of the key points is to decouple the carrier-phonon transport. Here, we propose an entropy engineering strategy to realize the carrier-phonon decoupling in the typical SrTiO3-based perovskite thermoelectrics. By high-entropy design, the lattice thermal conductivity could be reduced nearly to the amorphous limit, 1.25 W m−1 K−1. Simultaneously, entropy engineering can tune the Ti displacement, improving the weighted mobility to 65 cm2 V−1 s−1. Such carrier-phonon decoupling behaviors enable the greatly enhanced μ W/κ L of ~5.2 × 103 cm3 K J−1 V−1. The measured maximum zT of 0.24 at 488 K and the estimated zT of ~0.8 at 1173 K in (Sr0.2Ba0.2Ca0.2Pb0.2La0.2)TiO3 film are among the best of n-type thermoelectric oxides. These results reveal that the entropy engineering may be a promising strategy to decouple the carrier-phonon transport and achieve higher zT in thermoelectrics.

As a novel fluid of functional material, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) micropolar fluid has the special properties of light, heat, magnetic and so on. It is of highly practical significance. The characteristics of flow, heat and mass transfer in MHD micropolar nanofluid boundary layer past a stretching plate are investigated based on the micropolar fluid theory in the present numerical work. In the presence of magnetic field, viscous dissipation and the cross-diffusion caused by Dufour effect and Soret effect are considered. First order slip velocity condition is employed. Mathematical models are built based on the assumptions. Collocation spectral method (CSM) via matrix multiplication is adopted to solve the two-dimensional dimensionless nonlinear partial governing equations. The program codes based on CSM is developed, validated and employed. The coupled effects of microrotation, Dufour effect, Soret effect, magnetic field as well as first order slip velocity boundary condition on the flow, heat and mass transfer are revealed. Besides, the variation trends of local Nusselt number and Sherwood number are analyzed in detail. The numerical results indicate that the fluid flow can be suppressed obviously in the consideration n of slip condition and magnetic field. As slip parameter δ and magnetic parameter M rise, the velocity in the boundary layer becomes lower gradually; further, both temperature and concentration increase. On the other hand, the opposite trend can be noticed with the effect of material parameter K. Moreover, Ec and Df augment the temperature; while, Sr leads to an upsurge in concentration. The temperature rises by about 79.73% with Dufour effect and Sh enlarges by a factor of about 38.15% with Soret effect. The concentration boundary layer decreases by about 37.50% is when K=5.0.

Abstract Electrostatic energy storage capacitors based on dielectrics have attracted much attention due to their wide applications in advanced electrical technology and electronic devices. Generally, high energy density is achieved at a high electric field, while conduction loss becomes nonnegligible, which harms practical applications. Here distinctly suppressed leakage current in BaZr0.5Ti0.5O3‐based films by entropy engineering is realized. With increased entropy, the leakage current density decreases by two orders of magnitude at the electric field of 3 MV cm−1, leading to a markedly improved energy efficiency of 87% at an ultrahigh breakdown strength of 8 MV cm−1 in high‐entropy films. Thereby, a high energy density of 51.9 J cm−3 is achieved. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of entropy engineering in improving the breakdown strength of dielectric films and shows great potential in enhancing the energy storage performance of capacitors.

White spot disease (WSD) outbreaks pose a significant threat to the Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) farming industry. The causative agent is the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV). There are no effective treatments for WSD so far. Therefore, understanding the resistance mechanisms of L. vannamei against the WSSV is crucial. C-type lectins (CTLs) are important pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) that promote agglutination, phagocytosis, encapsulation, bacteriostasis, and antiviral infections. This study cloned the C-type lectin domain family 4 member F (LvCLEC4F) from L. vannamei. LvCLEC4F contains a 492 bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a protein of 163 amino acids, including a carbohydrate recognition domain (CRD). Following a challenge with the WSSV, the expression profile of LvCLEC4F was significantly altered. Using RNA interference (RNAi) technology, it was found that LvCLEC4F promotes WSSV replication and affects the expression levels of genes related to the regulation of apoptosis, signaling and cellular stress response, and immune defense. Meanwhile, the hemolymph agglutination phenomenon in vivo was weakened when LvCLEC4F was knocked down. These results indicated that LvCLEC4F may play an important role in the interaction between L. vannamei and WSSV.

As one of the most important and economically enhanced oil-recovery technologies, water flooding has been applied in various oilfields worldwide for nearly a century. Stratified water injection is the key to improving water-flooding performance. In water flooding, the water-injection rate is normally optimized based on the reservoir permeability and thickness. However, this strategy is not applicable after oilfields enter the ultra-high-water-cut period. In this study, an original method for optimizing water-flooding parameters for developing multi-layer sandstone reservoirs in the entire flooding process and in a given period is proposed based on reservoir engineering theory and optimization technology. Meanwhile, optimization mathematical models that yield maximum oil recovery or net present value (NPV) are developed. The new method is verified by water-flooding experiments using Berea cores. The results show that using the method developed in this study can increase the total oil recovery by approximately 3 percent compared with the traditional method using the same water-injection amounts. The experimental results are consistent with the results from theoretical analysis. Moreover, this study shows that the geological reserves of each layer and the relative permeability curves have the greatest influence on the optimized water-injection rate, rather than the reservoir properties, which are the primary consideration in a traditional optimization method. The method developed in this study could not only be implemented in a newly developed oilfield but also could be used in a mature oilfield that has been developed for years. However, this study also shows that using the optimized water injection at an earlier stage will provide better EOR performance.

Abstract Due to the great demand for global energy consumption, electro‐thermal energy interconversion has drawn great attention. Ferroelectrics as promising candidates realize energy conversion through pyroelectric and electrocaloric effects, but their efficiency is not sufficiently high. Herein, using phase‐field simulations, it is demonstrated that superlattices with polar topologies tend to have various polarization behaviors, and the antiferroelectric‐ to paraelectric‐like phase transition induces a large polarization change and thus a high pyroelectric response. In KNbO3/KTaO3 superlattices, the pyroelectric energy conversion has a scaled efficiency of 50% and the equivalent ZT of 7.2, and the electrocaloric cooling temperature reaches 40 K. The operation temperature can be tuned by changing the thickness of the superlattice. The results reveal that oxide superlattices are competitive in energy harvesting and conversion, thus creating new application prospects for polar topologies.

Ceramics are considered intrinsically brittle at macro scale due to the lack of slip mechanism and pre-existing defects, which greatly limits their potential applications in emerging fields including wearable electronic devices and flexible display. In this contribution, we developed BiFeO3/SiO2 dual-networks with exceptional flexibility through a coupled electronetting/electrospun method. The hybrid nanostructured networks endow the material with high tensile strength (2.7 MPa), excellent flexibility (80% recoverable deformation), and robust fatigue resistance performance (maintain flexibility after a 1000-cyclic compress test). After in-situ compounded with dielectric polymer via a layer-by-layer solution casting method, the resultant three-dimensional (3D) composite film exhibits a twice higher dielectric constant (εr) than polyether imide (PEI) film. More importantly, the breakdown strength of the 3D composite film is almost the same as that of the PEI film, resulting in an enhanced energy density of ~6.0 J/cm3 and a high efficiency of 80% at 4.58 MV/cm. The unique structure, combined with the excellent balance between mechanical and dielectric properties in flexible structures, is of critical significance to the design of flexible functional ceramics and broadening their applications in wearable electric devices.

The outbreak of anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum spp. represents a devastating epidemic that severely affects oil tea (Camellia oleifera) production in China. However, the unknown resistance mechanism to anthracnose in C. oleifera has impeded the progress of breeding disease-resistant varieties. In this study, we investigated the physiological responses of resistant and susceptible lines during C. gloeosporioides infection. Our results showed that the accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and peroxidase (POD) in both disease-resistant and susceptible lines increased by C. gloeosporioides infection. Also, disease-resistant lines exhibited lower MDA, but higher POD, SOD, and CAT activities compared to susceptible lines. The accumulation of flavonoids in both resistant and susceptible C. oleifera leaves increased following C. gloeosporioides infection, and the increase was greater in resistant lines. Further, we identified and functionally characterized the dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (CoDFR) from the resistant C. oleifera line. We showed that the full-length coding sequence (CDS) of CoDFR is 1044 bp encoding 347 amino acids. The overexpression of CoDFR in tobacco altered the expression of flavonoid biosynthetic genes, resulting in an increased flavonoid content in leaves. CoDFR transgenic tobacco plants exhibited increased anthracnose resistance. Furthermore, the transgenic plants had higher salicylic acid content. These findings offer potential insights into the pivotal role of CoDFR involved in flavonoid-mediated defense mechanisms during anthracnose invasion in resistant C. oleifera.

Supervisory styles Are Key predictors of graduate students’ innovation performance (GSIP), but the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this relationship require further exploration. Based on the job demands-resources model and conservation of resources theory, this study analyzed the influence of supervisory styles on GSIP, including the mediating role of psychological capital (PsyCap) and the moderating role of harmonious academic passion (HAP). Questionnaires were completed by 400 graduate students from a Chinese university. The results indicated that (1) both supportive and directive supervisory styles (SSS and DSS) were positively related To GSIP, (2) PsyCap fully mediated the relationship between SSS and GSIP, and (3) HAP significantly moderated the effect of DSS but exhibited no moderating influence on the effect of SSS. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of why, how and when supervisory styles influence GSIP. Implications for both theory and practice as well as the limitations of this research are discussed.

Phosphorus (P) is an indispensable macronutrient for plant growth and development, and it is involved in various cellular biological activities in plants. Camellia oleifera is a unique high-quality woody oil plant that grows in the hills and mountains of southern China. However, the available P content is deficient in southern woodland soil. Until now, few studies focused on the regulatory functions of microRNAs (miRNAs) and their target genes under low inorganic phosphate (Pi) stress. In this study, we integrated small RNA, degradome, and transcriptome sequencing data to investigate the mechanism of low Pi adaptation in C. oleifera. We identified 40,689 unigenes and 386 miRNAs by the deep sequencing technology and divided the miRNAs into four different groups. We found 32 miRNAs which were differentially expressed under low Pi treatment. A total of 414 target genes of 108 miRNAs were verified by degradome sequencing. Gene ontology (GO) functional analysis of target genes found that they were related to the signal response to the stimulus and transporter activity, indicating that they may respond to low Pi stress. The integrated analysis revealed that 31 miRNA–target pairs had negatively correlated expression patterns. A co-expression regulatory network was established based on the profiles of differentially expressed genes. In total, three hub genes (ARF22, WRKY53, and SCL6), which were the targets of differentially expressed miRNAs, were discovered. Our results showed that integrated analyses of the small RNA, degradome, and transcriptome sequencing data provided a valuable basis for investigating low Pi in C. oleifera and offer new perspectives on the mechanism of low Pi tolerance in woody oil plants.

Camellia oleifera a member of the family Theaceae, is a phosphorus (P) tolerator native to southern China. The SPX gene family critically regulates plant growth and development and maintains phosphate (Pi) homeostasis. However, the involvement of SPX genes in Pi signaling in Tea-Oil Camellia remains unknown. In this work, 20 SPX genes were identified and categorized into four subgroups. Conserved domains, motifs, gene structure, chromosomal location and gene duplication events were also investigated in the SPX gene family. Defense and stress responsiveness cis-elements were identified in the SPX gene promoters, which participated in low-Pi stress responses. Based on transcriptome data and qRT-PCR results, nine CoSPX genes had similar expression patterns and eight genes (except CoPHO1H3) were up-regulated at 30 days after exposure to low-Pi stress. CoSPX-MFS3 was selected as a key candidate gene by WGCNA analysis. CoSPX-MFS3 was a tonoplast protein. Overexpression of CoSPX-MFS3 in Arabidopsis promoted the accumulation of total P content and decreased the anthocyanin content. Overexpression of CoSPX-MFS3 could enhance low-Pi tolerance by increased biomass and organic acid contents in transgenic Arabidopsis lines. Furthermore, the expression patterns of seven phosphate starvation genes were higher in transgenic Arabidopsis than those in the wild type. These results highlight novel physiological roles of the SPX family genes in C. oleifera under low-Pi stress, and lays the foundation for a deeper knowledge of the response mechanism of C. oleifera to low-Pi stress.

Flexible ferroelectric memories, endowing with high data storage density, provide a chance for the next-generation wearable electronics. Here, flexible inorganic Mn-doped BiFeO3 thin films were directly integrated on fluorophlogopite mica (F-Mica) substrates by an easy and low-cost all solution chemical solution deposition (AS-CSD) route. The integration of LaNiO3 buffer layer can improve the film surface density and uniformity. The flexible characteristic can be achieved by reducing the thickness of F-Mica substrates for the ferroelectric thin films. In contrast to BiFe0·93Mn0·07O3/LaNiO3/Si thin film deposited on rigid substrates (Si), the BiFe0·93Mn0·07O3/LaNiO3/F-mica fabricated on F-Mica show better ferroelectric performances due to the improved crystal growth and less defects. More importantly, the obtained BiFe0·93Mn0·07O3/LaNiO3/F-mica ferroelectric thin films still show large remnant polarization of Pr ∼64 μC/cm2 (deterioration of ∼7.2%), good antifatigue properties up to 1.2 × 108 cycles and outstanding retention behaviors for 1.6 × 104 s after continuous bending. This work will provide a feasible route to fabricate flexible inorganic ferroelectric thin films through low-cost solution method and show attractive comprehensive performances in next-generation wearable smart devices.

Although recent evidence indicates an association between gene co-expression and functional connectivity in human brain, specific association patterns remain largely unknown. Here, using neuroimaging-based functional connectivity data of living brains and brain-wide gene expression data of postmortem brains, we performed comprehensive analyses to dissect relationships between gene co-expression and functional connectivity. We identified 125 connectivity-related genes (20 novel genes) enriched for dendrite extension, signaling pathway and schizophrenia, and 179 gene-related functional connections mainly connecting intra-network regions, especially homologous cortical regions. In addition, 51 genes were associated with connectivity in all brain functional networks and enriched for action potential and schizophrenia; in contrast, 51 genes showed network-specific modulatory effects and enriched for ion transportation. These results indicate that functional connectivity is unequally affected by gene expression, and connectivity-related genes with different biological functions are involved in connectivity modulation of different networks.

The purpose of this study was to analyze microstructural alterations in cerebral gray matter using non-Gaussian diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) patients with optic neuritis (NMOSD-ON). DKI was performed in 14 NMOSD-ON patients and 22 normal controls (NCs). DKI-derived metrics, including mean kurtosis (MK), radial kurtosis (RK), axial kurtosis (AK), fractional anisotropy (FA), and mean diffusivity (MD), were voxel-wisely compared by two-sample t-tests with gaussian random field (GRF) correction between the two groups. The correlations between altered DKI metrics and clinical features were analyzed. Compared with NCs, NMOSD-ON patients showed significantly decreased MK and RK both in the left inferior temporal gyrus (ITG), and decreased AK in the bilateral calcarine (CAL). While increased MD in the left fusiform gyrus (FFG), right CAL, and right hippocampus (HIP)/parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) were found. Furthermore, correlation analysis showed that mean deviation was negatively correlated with AK values of bilateral CAL and positively correlated with MD values of right CAL (q < 0.05, false discovery rate (FDR) corrected). For NMOSD-ON patients, microstructural abnormalities in the occipital visual cortex are correlated with clinical disability. These findings may provide complementary information to understand the neuropathological mechanisms underlying the impairments of cerebral gray matter in NMOSD-ON.

The stochastic reaction model (SRM) treats polymerization as a pure probability‐based issue, which is widely applied to simulate various polymerization processes. However, in many studies, active centers were assumed to react with the same probability, which cannot reflect the heterogeneous reaction microenvironment in heterogeneous polymerizations. Recently, we have proposed a simple SRM, in which the reaction probability of an active center is directly determined by the local reaction microenvironment. In this paper, we compared this simple SRM with other SRMs by examining living polymerizations with randomly dispersed and spatially localized initiators. The results confirmed that the reaction microenvironment plays an important role in heterogeneous polymerizations. This simple SRM provides a good choice to simulate various polymerizations.

Metabolic reprogramming is a feature of cancer cells and crucial for tumor growth and metastasis. Interferon-γ (IFNγ) is a cytokine that plays a pivotal role in host antitumor immunity. However, little is known about the roles of metabolic reprogramming in immune responses. Here, we show that colon cancer cells reprogram metabolism to coordinate proper cellular responses to IFNγ by downregulating mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC)1 and 2 via STAT3 signaling. Forced overexpression of MPC promote the production of reactive oxygen species and enhance the apoptosis induced by IFNγ in colon cancer cells. Moreover, inhibiting STAT3 sensitize the antitumor efficacy of IFN-γ against colon cancer cells. Our findings present a previously unrecognized mechanism that colon cancer manipulate to resist IFNγ mediated antitumor immunity that have implications for targeting a unique aspect of this disease. Mapping gene expression profiles to neuroimaging phenotypes in the same anatomical space provides opportunities to discover molecular substrates for human brain functional properties. Here, we aimed to identify cell-type-specific gene modules associated with the regional homogeneity (ReHo) of spontaneous brain activity and their associations with brain disorders. Fourteen gene modules were consistently associated with ReHo in the three datasets, five of which showed cell-type-specific expression (one neuron-endothelial module, one neuron module, one astrocyte module and two microglial modules) in two independent cell series of the human cerebral cortex. The neuron-endothelial module was mainly enriched for transporter complexes, the neuron module for the synaptic membrane, the astrocyte module for amino acid metabolism, and microglial modules for leukocyte activation and ribose phosphate biosynthesis. In enrichment analyses of cell-type-specific modules for 10 common brain disorders, only the microglial module was significantly enriched for genes obtained from genome-wide association studies of multiple sclerosis (MS) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The ReHo of spontaneous brain activity is associated with the gene expression profiles of neurons, astrocytes, microglia and endothelial cells. The microglia-related genes associated with MS and AD may provide possible molecular substrates for ReHo abnormality in both brain disorders.

The ethylene-responsive element (AP2/ERF) is one of the keys and conserved transcription factors (TFs) in plants that play a vital role in regulating plant growth, development, and stress response. A total of 202 AP2/ERF genes were identified from the pecan genome and renamed according to the chromosomal distribution of the CiAP2/ERF genes. They were divided into four subfamilies according to the domain and phylogenetic analysis, including 26 AP2, 168 ERF, six RAV, and two Soloist gene family members. These genes were distributed randomly across the 16 chromosomes, and we found 19 tandem and 146 segmental duplications which arose from ancient duplication events. The gene structure and conserved motif analysis demonstrated the conserved nature of intron/exon organization and motifs among the AP2/ERF genes. Several cis-regulatory elements, which were related to light responsiveness, stress, and defense responses, were identified in the promoter regions of AP2/ERFs. The expression profiling of 202 CiAP2/ERF genes was assessed by using RNA-Seq data and qRT-PCR during development (pistillate flowering development, graft union development, and kernel development) and under abiotic stresses (waterlogging, drought). Moreover, the results suggested that the ERF-VII members may play a critical role in waterlogging stress. These findings provided new insights into AP2/ERF gene evolution and divergence in pecan and can be considered a valuable resource for further functional validation, as well as for utilization in a stress-resistance-variety development program.

Abstract Background Lysosome-associated agents have been implicated as possible chemo-sensitizers and immune regulators for cancer chemotherapy. We investigated the potential roles and mechanisms of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) in combination with chemotherapy in lung cancer treatment. Methods The effects of combined treatment on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) were investigated using cell viability assays and animal models. The influence of HCQ on lysosomal pH was evaluated by lysosomal sensors and confocal microscopy. The effects of HCQ on the tumour immune microenvironment were analysed by flow cytometry. Results HCQ elevates the lysosomal pH of cancer cells to inactivate P-gp while increasing drug release from the lysosome into the nucleus. Furthermore, single HCQ therapy inhibits lung cancer by inducing macrophage-modulated anti-tumour CD8+ T cell immunity. Moreover, HCQ could promote the transition of M2 tumour-associated macrophages (TAMs) into M1-like macrophages, leading to CD8+ T cell infiltration into the tumour microenvironment. Conclusions HCQ exerts anti-NSCLC cells effects by reversing the drug sequestration in lysosomes and enhancing the CD8+ T cell immune response. These findings suggest that HCQ could act as a promising chemo-sensitizer and immune regulator for lung cancer chemotherapy in the clinic.

Air separation is very important from the viewpoint of the economic and environmental advantages. In this work, defect-free facilitated transport membranes based on poly(amide-12-b-ethylene oxide) (Pebax-2533) and tetra(p-methoxylphenyl)porphyrin cobalt chloride (T(p-OCH3)PPCoCl) were fabricated in systematically varied compositions for O2/N2 separation. T(p-OCH3)PPCoCl was introduced as carriers that selectively and reversibly interacted with O2 and facilitated O2 transport in the membrane. The T(p-OCH3)PPCoCl had good compatibility with the Pebax-2533 via the hydrogen bond interaction and formed a uniform and thin selective layer on the substrate. The O2 separation performance of the thin film composite (TFC) membranes was improved by adding a small amount of the T(p-OCH3)PPCoCl and decreasing the feed pressure. At the pressure of 0.035 MPa, the O2 permeability and O2/N2 selectivity of the 0.6 wt % T(p-OCH3)PPCoCl/Pebax-2533 was more than 3.5 times that of the Pebax-2533 TFC membrane, which reached the 2008 Robeson upper bound. It provides a candidate membrane material for O2/N2 efficient separation in moderate conditions.

Integrating multiple functions in a single compound is still attractive and necessary to meet the demand of device miniaturization. In this work, we systemically modulate multifunctional properties in the 0.74BiFeO3–0.26(Ba0:85Ca0:15)TiO3–x wt. % MnO2 solid solution with the addition of MnO2. A highly rectangular and saturated polarization–hysteresis (P–E) loop is obtained with a large remanent polarization Pr of 49.5 μC/cm² as x = 0:8. Furthermore, the piezoelectric coefficient d33 also obviously improved with an optimized d33 = 137 pC/N by the introduction of MnO2 due to the grain size effect, the improvement of insulation, and relaxation regulation. With the addition of MnO2, the remanent magnetization Mr increases monotonically because of the enhanced exchange interactions between Fe2+and Fe3+. The results may provide an effective way to explore promising multifunctional materials in BiFeO3-based ceramics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
