Chiral perovskites have attracted considerable attention as excellent spin-emitting materials for applications in spintronics, quantum optics, and biological. Especially in drug development of biological, weak chirality molecules are frequently selected to reduce the side effects of toxics, and there is a common defect for accurately detecting the weak chirality with common methods at room temperature. In this study, formamidine lead bromide perovskite nanocrystals (FAPbBr3 NCs) were coated with chiral ligands, whose chirality was too weak to be observed in the visible region at room temperature. Thus, by characterizing the transverse shift of photonic spin Hall effect (SHE), the accurate discrimination of weak chirality in the visible region was achieved successfully. By measuring the shift value and light spot splitting of photonic SHE at the same concentration, NEA-coated FAPbBr3 NCs can effectively enhance the chirality of naphthalene ethylamine (NEA) ligands when under the mutually reinforcement of chiral molecular and inorganic parts. In addition, we furtherly clearly distinguished the tiny chiral distinction of NEA-coated FAPbBr3 NCs with different particle sizes, which revealed that the chirality decreases with the increase of particle size. These findings could provide effective solutions for the detection and application of weak chirality in hybrid perovskite nanocrystals in universal environment.

GATA transcription factors have been reported to function in plant growth and development and during various biotic/abiotic stresses in Arabidopsis and rice. However, the functions of wheat GATAs, particularly in the regulation of seed dormancy and germination, remain unclear. Here, we identified 78 TaGATAs in wheat and divided them into five subfamilies. Sixty-four paralogous pairs and 52 orthologous pairs were obtained, and Ka/Ks ratios showed that the TaGATAs had undergone strong purifying election during the evolutionary process. Triplet analysis indicated that a high homologue retention rate could explain the large number of TaGATAs in wheat. Gene structure analysis revealed that most members of the same subfamily had similar structures, and subcellular localization prediction indicated that most TaGATAs were located in the nucleus. Gene ontology annotation results showed that most TaGATAs had molecular functions in DNA and zinc binding, and promoter analysis suggested that they may play important roles in growth, development, and biotic/abiotic stress response. We combined three microarray datasets with qRT-PCR expression data from wheat varieties of contrasting dormancy and pre-harvest sprouting resistance levels during imbibition in order to identify ten candidate genes (TaGATA17/-25/-34/-37/-40/-46/-48/-51/-72/-73) that may be involved in the regulation of seed dormancy and germination in wheat. These findings provide valuable information for further dissection of TaGATA functions in the regulation of seed dormancy and germination, thereby enabling the improvement of wheat pre-harvest sprouting resistance by gene pyramiding.

While aqueous Zn-Na hybrid batteries have garnered widespread attention because of their low cost and high safety, it is still challenging to achieve long cycle-life and stable discharge-voltage due to sluggish reaction kinetics, zinc dendrite formation, and side reactions. Herein, we design a Zn2+/Na+ dual-salt battery, in which sodiation of the NVP cathode favors zinc intercalation under an energy threshold, leading to decoupled redox reactions on the cathode and anode. Systematic investigations of the electrolyte effects show that the ion intercalation mechanism and the kinetics in the mixture of triflate- and acetate-based electrolytes are superior to those in the common acetate-only electrolytes. As a result, we have achieved fast discharging capability, suppressed zinc dendrites, a stable discharge voltage at 1.45 V with small polarization, and nearly 100% Columbic efficiency in the dual-salt mixture electrolyte with optimized concentration of 1 M Zn(OAc)2 + 1 M NaCF3SO3. This work demonstrates the importance of electrolyte regulation in aqueous dual-salt hybrid batteries for the energy storage.

With the ever-increasing demands of grid-scale energy storage, aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have garnered increasing attention around the world. However, limited Zn2+ host materials have hindered the commercialization of ZIBs. Hence, Mo-V oxides with different phase structures (orth-, tri-, and tetra-MoVO) were precisely constructed to develop phase-dependent Mo-V oxide cathodes for Zn2+ storage in ZIBs. The open frameworks and varied tunnel structures formed a favorable alternative for achieving suitable Zn2+ diffusion kinetics. With optimized phase engineering, the high specific capacity of approximately 400 mA h g−1 and excellent cyclic stability of 1000 cycles were achieved with orth-MoVO as the cathode. The large amount of six- and seven-member rings in the orth-MoVO phase, which allow for alternative Zn2+ insertion, play a vital role in hosting Zn2+ ions reversibly. The proposed phase engineering strategy provides a new approach toward cathode design in ZIBs.

In order to prevent the slow degradation of pristine water ecosystems caused by increasing SO42− in natural water bodies (lakes and rivers), innovative and cost-effective remediation techniques are urgently required.

K metal is the optimal anode for K-ion batteries because of its high capacity and low operating potential, but it suffers from fast capacity fading and safety issues due to an unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and continuous K-dendrite growth. Herein, to obtain promising potassium-metal batteries, a 3D polyvinyl-alcohol (PVA)-borax layer is designed, which enables a dendrite-free K-plating/stripping process. The protective layer possesses good wettability, high K-ion diffusivity, and good structural stability, which enables a "uniform and underneath plating" behavior, therefore exhibiting a stable electrochemical performance. As a result, Cu current collector with PVA-borax (PVA-borax@Cu) exhibits a stable cycling lifetime for 700 h at 0.5 mA cm-2 and 500 h at 1 mA cm-2 at 10 % depth of discharge (DOD) without dendrite formation. Even at a high utilization of 25 % DOD and 50 % DOD, the PVA-borax@Cu shows a stable cycle for 180 h and 100 h, respectively.

Cubic phase garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is a promising solid electrolyte for highly safe Li-ion batteries. Al-doped LLZO (Al-LLZO) has been widely studied due to the low cost of Al2O3. The reported ionic conductivities were variable due to the complicated Al3+-Li+ substitution and LixAlOy segregation in Al-LLZO ceramics. This work prepared Li7−3xAlxLa3Zr2O12 (x = 0.00~0.40) ceramics via a conventional solid-state reaction method. The AC impedance and corresponding distribution of relaxation times (DRT) were analyzed combined with phase transformation, cross-sectional microstructure evolution, and grain boundary element mapping results for these Al-LLZO ceramics to understand the various ionic transportation levels in LLZO with different Al-doping amounts. The low conductivity in low Al-doped (0.12~0.28) LLZO originates from the slow Li+ ion migration (1.4~0.25 μs) in the cubic-tetragonal mixed phase. On the other hand, LiAlO2 and LaAlO3 segregation occur at the grain boundaries of high Al-doped (0.40) LLZO, resulting in a gradual Li+ ion jump (6.5 μs) over grain boundaries and low ionic conductivity. The Li6.04Al0.32La3Zr2O12 ceramic delivers the optimum Li+ ion conductivity of 1.7 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 25 °C.

Increased life expectancy has resulted in an increase in osteoporosis incidence worldwide. The coupling of angiogenesis and osteogenesis is indispensable for bone repair. Although traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) exerts therapeutic effects on osteoporosis, TCM-related scaffolds, which focus on the coupling of angiogenesis and osteogenesis, have not yet been used for the treatment of osteoporotic bone defects. Panax notoginseng saponin (PNS), the active ingredient of Panax notoginseng, was added to a poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) matrix. Osteopractic total flavone (OTF), the active ingredient of Rhizoma Drynariae, was encapsulated in nano-hydroxyapatite/collagen (nHAC) and added to the PLLA matrix. Magnesium (Mg) particles were added to the PLLA matrix to overcome the bioinert character of PLLA and neutralize the acidic byproducts generated by PLLA. In this OTF-PNS/nHAC/Mg/PLLA scaffold, PNS was released faster than OTF. The control group had an empty bone tunnel; scaffolds containing OTF:PNS = 100:0, 50:50, and 0:100 were used as the treatment groups. Scaffold groups promoted new vessel and bone formation, increased the osteoid tissue, and suppressed the osteoclast activity around osteoporotic bone defects. Scaffold groups upregulated the expression levels of angiogenic and osteogenic proteins. Among these scaffolds, the OTF-PNS (50:50) scaffold exhibited a better capacity for osteogenesis than the OTF-PNS (100:0 and 0:100) scaffolds. Activation of the bone morphogenic protein (BMP)-2/BMP receptor (BMPR)-1A/runt-related transcription factor (RUNX)-2 signaling pathway may be a possible mechanism for the promotion of osteogenesis. Our study demonstrated that the OTF-PNS/nHAC/Mg/PLLA scaffold could promote osteogenesis via the coupling of angiogenesis and osteogenesis in osteoporotic rats with bone defects, and activating the BMP-2/BMPR1A/RUNX2 signaling pathway may be an osteogenesis-related mechanism. However, further experiments are necessary to facilitate its practical application in the treatment of osteoporotic bone defects.

The unsatisfactory rate capability and poor cycling stability at high rate of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have impeded their practical applications. Herein, a Na3V2(PO4)3/Na3V3(PO4)4 multiphase cathode materials for high-rate and long cycling SIBs was successfully synthesized by regulation the stoichiometric ratio of raw materials. The combined experiment and simulation results show that the multiphase materials consisted of NASICON structural phase Na3V2(PO4)3 and layered structure phase Na3V3(PO4)4, possess abundant phase boundaries. Electrochemical experiments demonstrate that the multiphase materials maintain a remarkable reversible capacity of 69.0 mA h g−1 even at an ultrahigh current density of 100 C with a high capacity retention of 81.25 % even after 10,000 cycles. Na3V2(PO4)3/Na3V3(PO4)4 electrode exhibits a higher working voltage, superior rate capability and better cycling stability than Na3V2(PO4)3 electrode, which indicates that the introduction of second phase can be an effective strategy for the development of novel cathode materials for SIBs.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are regarded as promising secondary energy storage devices for their high energy density and low cost. The electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries is mainly determined by the efficient and reversible conversion of lithium-polysulfides to Li2S when discharging and to S when charging. Herein, a catalytic strategy is proposed to accelerate the reversible conversion of S and the discharge products in Li-S batteries. This reversible transformation is achieved with active sites of single-atom iron on nitrogen- and sulfur-doped porous carbon (FeNSC). We prove that the synergy between atomically dispersed iron and doped sulfur accelerates the reversible electrochemical conversion reactions in Li-S batteries. The FeNSC/S hybrid cathode exhibits superior long-term cycling stability even at a high current density of 1C, with only 0.047% capacity decay per cycle over 1000 cycles. This study demonstrates a novel method for improving the conversion of polysulfides based on electrocatalysis strategies to ultimately obtain high-performance Li-S batteries.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based polymer electrolytes are promising candidates for solid-state electrolytes in safer, next generation lithium metal batteries. Despite their benefits however, PEO-based electrolyte exhibits highly crystalline ethylene oxide chains that provide poor ionic conductivity and, thus severely limit its practical application. Here, we report the use of hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonimide chitosan salt (HACC-TFSI), which is an amorphous poly(ionic liquid) based biomass chitosan derivative, as a modifier for PEO-based solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) to address these deficiencies. Hybrid SPEs with HACC-TFSI display enlarged amorphous regions with enhanced ionic conductivity. Interactions between quaternary ammonium cations and TFSI− anions in hybrid SPEs are also found to promote dissociation between Li+ and TFSI−, which further increases ionic mobility. Moreover, the electrochemical stability, mechanical strength, and thermal stability of hybrid SPEs are collectively superior to blank SPEs without HACC-TFSI. LiFePO4/SPEs/Li full-cells assembled using 10wt% HACC-TFSI in PEO (10%HACC-TFSI/SPEs) electrolyte provide a capacity of 161.3 mAh g−1 and operate with excellent cycle performances at 0.2 C and 60 °C. Even when the temperature is increased to 150 °C, LiFePO4/SPEs/Li cells with 10%HACC-TFSI/SPEs still display remarkable cycle performance with 73% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 1 C rate.

Two-dimensional iron phosphorus trichalcogenide (FePS3) has attracted significant attention for its use in electricity, magnetism and optical fields due to its outstanding physical and chemical properties. Herein, FePS3 was prepared using the chemical vapor transportation (CVT) method and then exfoliated by using fast electrochemical exfoliation. After gradient centrifugation, FePS3 nanosheets with thicknesses ranging from 1.5 to 20 nm and lateral dimensions of 0.5–3 μm were obtained. By utilizing the spatial self-phase modulation (SSPM) effect, the relationships between the nonlinear refractive index and the size of the FePS3 nanosheets were investigated in detail which revealed that the nonlinear refractive index can be effectively controlled by the size of the FePS3 nanosheets. It is worth noting that the optimal FePS3 nanosheets (3–5 layers thick and ∼1 μm in lateral dimensions) displayed the highest nonlinear refractive index of ∼10−5 cm2 W−1. This work demonstrates the potential that FePS3 nanosheets have for use in nonlinear optics or nonlinear optical devices.

Two-dimensional ferroelectrics is attractive for synaptic device applications because of its low power consumption and amenability to high-density device integration. Here, we demonstrate that tin monosulfide (SnS) films less than 6 nm thick show optimum performance as a semiconductor channel in an in-plane ferroelectric analogue synaptic device, whereas thicker films have a much poorer ferroelectric response due to screening effects by a higher concentration of charge carriers. The SnS ferroelectric device exhibits synaptic behaviors with highly stable room-temperature operation, high linearity in potentiation/depression, long retention, and low cycle-to-cycle/device-to-device variations. The simulated device based on ferroelectric SnS achieves ∼92.1% pattern recognition accuracy in an artificial neural network simulation. By switching the ferroelectric domains partially, multilevel conductance states and the conductance ratio can be obtained, achieving high pattern recognition accuracy.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have attracted considerable attention in the energy storage field due to their high theoretical energy density and low price. However, the dissolution of polysulfides and the "shuttle effect" lead to serious capacity degradation, which greatly hinders the industrial application of Li-S batteries. Herein, we propose a bifunctional quinone-type salt to anchor polysulfides and suppress their dissolution for use in high-performance Li-S batteries. We find that the tetrahydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone disodium salt dimer (TBS-dimer) does not dissolve in organic electrolytes and can be generated at 400 °C. The abundant reactive keto groups and double bonds result in the TBS-dimers having numerous "hot spots" for capturing sulfur (TBS/S-400) in the three-dimensional space of the molecule. The insolubility and abundant active sites of the organic salt remarkably suppress the dissolution of lithium polysulfides. As a result, the TBS/S-400 composite delivers a capacity decay rate of only 0.023% per cycle over 600 cycles at 2 C. The use of organic salts to effectively suppress the dissolution of lithium polysulfides opens a new avenue for the practical applications of high-performance Li-S batteries.

Lithium metal has been perceived as an extremely attractive anode due to its superior energy density and low redox potential. However, great challenges affiliated with the operating security of Li metal batteries (LMBs) posed by growing Li dendrites hamper the widespread application of rechargeable LMBs. In this study, hierarchical hairball-like boron nitride (h-BN) was fabricated on a Li metal anode using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. The chemically inert and mechanically robust dielectric h-BN coating on the Li anode can act as an interfacial layer conducive to enhancing the stability and extending the battery lifetime of LMBs by suppressing the formation and propagation of dendrites during the recurrent plating and stripping process. Moreover, the h-BN layer favors the drift of Li ions and mitigates electrolyte depletion, therefore demonstrating a reduced polarization in the voltage profiles, which further facilitates the uniform deposition of Li ions during battery operation. As proof, the Li/BN || BN/Li symmetrical cells can circulate steadily for 1800 h with no observable polarization at constant current density. Thus, the three-dimensional h-BN interface layer is efficacious for Li dendrite suppression during the practical application of LMBs, and it may also be promising for tackling dendrite issues in other metal ion battery systems.
