Abstract Biological invasions pose a significant threat to ecosystems, disrupting local biodiversity and ecosystem functions. The genomic underpinnings of invasiveness, however, are still largely unknown, making it difficult to predict and manage invasive species effectively. The common reed (Phragmites australis) is a dominant grass species in wetland ecosystems and has become particularly invasive when transferred from Europe to North America. Here, we present a high-quality gap-free, telomere-to-telomere genome assembly of Phragmites australis consisting of 24 pseudochromosomes and a B chromosome. Fully phased subgenomes demonstrated considerable subgenome dominance and revealed the divergence of diploid progenitors approximately 30.9 million years ago. Comparative genomics using chromosome-level scaffolds for three other lineages and a previously published draft genome assembly of an invasive lineage revealed that gene family expansions in the form of tandem duplications may have contributed to the invasiveness of the lineage. This study sheds light on the genome evolution of Arundinoideae grasses and suggests that genetic drivers, such as gene family expansions and tandem duplications, may underly the processes of biological invasion in plants. These findings provide a crucial step toward understanding and managing the genetic basis of invasiveness in plant species.

Large-volume presses (LVPs) providing large volumes, liquid media, deformation capability, jump compression, and in situ measurements are in great demand for high-pressure research, particularly in the fields of geoscience, condensed matter physics, material science, chemistry, and biology. A high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) platform with different LVP subsystems, both solid-state and liquid environments, and nonequilibrium subsystems, has been constructed at the Synergetic Extreme Condition User Facility, Jilin University. This article describes the construction of the different subsystems and provides an overview of the capabilities and characteristics of the different HPHT subsystems. A large sample volume (1000 mm3) at 20 GPa is achieved through the use of a belt-type apparatus in the solid-state subsystem. HPHT conditions (1.8 GPa and 1000 K) are realized in the liquid subsystem through the use of a piston–cylinder-type LVP with optical diamond windows for in situ spectroscopic measurements. A maximum pressure jump to 10.2 GPa can be reached within 20 ms in the nonequilibrium subsystem with the use of an improved bladder-pressurization jump press. Some typical results obtained with different LVPs are briefly reviewed to illustrate the applications and advantages of these presses. In summary, the platform described here has the potential to contribute greatly to high-pressure research and to innovations in high-pressure technology.

BackgroundAdvancements in radiotherapy (RT) technology have led to the prominence of precision RT in head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment. The new progress in precision RT offers more efficient therapy, potentially improving outcomes for HNC patients.ObjectiveThe present cross-sectional study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of patients in advanced precision RT for HNC treatment.MethodsThis study enrolled HNC patients at the Affiliated Hospital of Hebei University of Engineering between October 2023 and May 2024. Then, the demographic data and KAP scores were collected using an investigator-designed questionnaire. Afterwards, descriptive statistics were provided for all study variables, and the relationship among KAP was analyzed using appropriate statistical tests, including Spearman correlation, logistic regression, and path analysis.ResultsA total of 436 participants with a mean age of 52.03 ± 12.19 years old were included. The mean knowledge score, attitude score, and practice score were 18.33 ± 4.21, 36.14 ± 1.71, and 26.26 ± 1.83, respectively. Although most of the participants were unfamiliar with advanced precision RT, they expressed a high willingness to follow their doctor's recommendation for this treatment. The multivariable analysis revealed a positive association between attitude score and proactive practice. The path analysis revealed that knowledge directly influenced attitude and practice, while attitude directly impacted practice.ConclusionHNC participants had poor knowledge of advanced precision RT techniques, but had a positive attitude and the willingness to undergo treatment when recommended by their physicians. These results suggest that improving patients' awareness for advanced precision RT can help to promote better attitude and advanced precision RT practice.

Ammonia-leaching residues of roasted molybdenite concentrates are intractable wastes and are mostly stockpiled in factories. Common treatments suffer from low Mo recovery and secondary pollution. This study has developed a synergistic process involving a single-step roasting with the addition of Al2O3 and MoO3 to recover Mo and simultaneously prepare porous refractories from the residues containing 5.6% Mo. The Mo separation efficiency, ceramic properties, and thermal behaviors—including chemical reactions, melting transformations, ceramic structure evolutions, and Mo species migrations—were comprehensively investigated. It was found that the addition of Al2O3 facilitated CaMoO4 decomposition to release volatile MoO3, thus promoting Mo recovery. The mullite started to form at about 900 °C, grew into whiskers, and further into interconnected clusters, under the catalytic effect of liquid MoO3 and the sintering effect of glassy melt. Liquid MoO3 was scattered on the outer surface of whisker clusters, achieving a high separation efficiency of over 98% after roasting at 1300 °C for 150 min. Meanwhile, a ceramic with a high porosity of 64.2% and a high compressive strength of 21.2 MPa was obtained, exhibiting promise for serving as a high-temperature insulation refractory. Overall, this study presents a novel approach for both the profound recovery of Mo and the value-added utilization of gangue minerals derived from CaMoO4-bearing wastes.

Abstract There are many methods to treat keloid, including various excision operations, laser, injection and radiotherapy. However, few studies have explored the effectiveness of single-hole punch excision in keloid treatment. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of lateral punch excision combined with intralesional steroid injection for keloid treatment through self-control trial. In this self-controlled trial, 50 patients meet the diagnosis of nodular keloid, and try to choose left–right symmetrical control, one skin lesion in the control group (50 skin lesionsin total) and the other in the observation group (50 skin lesions in total).The keloids in the treatment group were initially treated with punch excision combined with intralesional steroid injection, followed by injection treatment alone. Keloids in the control group received intralesional steroid injection alone. The Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) of the keloid before and after the punch excision was evaluated; the keloid scores at different time points and the number of injection treatments required in both groups were compared, and adverse reactions were observed. The effective rate of the observation group was 86.0%, which was significantly higher than that of the control group (66.0%), and the recurrence rate of 22% was lower than that of the control group (χ2 = 4.141,63417), all of which were statistically significant (all P

Abstract The unsustainable and widespread utilization of fossil fuels continues to drive the rapid depletion of global supplies. Biodiesel has emerged as one of the most promising alternatives to conventional diesel, leading to growing research interest in its production. Microbes can facilitate the de novo synthesis of a type of biodiesel in the form of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs). In this study, Saccharomyces cerevisiae metabolic activity was engineered to facilitate enhanced FAME production. Initially, free fatty acid concentrations were increased by deleting two acetyl-CoA synthetase genes (FAA1, FAA4) and an acyl-CoA oxidase gene (POX1). Intracellular S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) levels were then enhanced via the deletion of an adenosine kinase gene (ADO1) and the overexpression of a SAM synthetase gene (SAM2). Lastly, the S. cerevisiae strain overproducing free fatty acids and SAM were manipulated to express a plasmid encoding the Drosophila melanogaster Juvenile Hormone Acid O-Methyltransferase (DmJHAMT). Using this combination of engineering approaches, a FAME concentration of 5.79 ± 0.56 mg/L was achieved using these cells in the context of shaking flask fermentation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first detailed study of FAME production in S. cerevisiae. These results will provide a valuable basis for future efforts to engineer S. cerevisiae strains for highly efficient production of biodiesel.

Stand transpiration (T) is an important process in the forest hydrological cycle, influenced by environmental factors such as potential evapotranspiration (PET) and relative extractable water (REW). Clarifying the independent effects and interactions of environmental factors on T can help to better understand the mechanisms of ecohydrological control of forest water use. In this study, the independent contributions of PET and REW to T and their interactions were quantified through field observations, modeling, and factor analysis in the secondary birch forest of the southern Greater Khingan Mountains. First, observations were made of sap density, meteorological variables, and REW over three growing seasons. Second, a T-coupled model (R² = 0.68, NSE = 0.7) was developed based on long-term observations of T, PET, and REW. Finally, the factorial analysis showed that PET was the main driver affecting T changes compared to REW and the interaction between PET and REW. The relative contribution of PET to T was 7.8%, 11.1%, and 10.7% in 2017, 2018, and 2019, respectively. REW limited 1.8%, 12.3%, and 9.7% of T change in 2017, 2018, and 2019, respectively, compared to the mean of these three years. Our study provides a simple and feasible way to separate the effects of PET and REW on T change and may deepen the understanding of the effects of different environmental factors on T.

Ultrahigh-temperature–pressure experiments are crucial for understanding the physical and chemical properties of matter. The recent development of boron-doped diamond (BDD) heaters has made such melting experiments possible in large-volume presses. However, estimates of temperatures above 2600 K and of the temperature distributions inside BDD heaters are not well constrained, owing to the lack of a suitable thermometer. Here, we establish a three-dimensional finite element model as a virtual thermometer to estimate the temperature and temperature field above 2600 K. The advantage of this virtual thermometer over those proposed in previous studies is that it considers both alternating and direct current heating modes, the actual sizes of cell assemblies after compression, the effects of the electrode, thermocouple and anvil, and the heat dissipation by the pressure-transmitting medium. The virtual thermometer reproduces the power–temperature relationships of ultrahigh-temperature–pressure experiments below 2600 K at press loads of 2.8–7.9 MN (∼19 to 28 GPa) within experimental uncertainties. The temperatures above 2600 K predicted by our virtual thermometer are within the uncertainty of those extrapolated from power–temperature relationships below 2600 K. IntroductionHow to scientifically assess the health status of cities and effectively assist in formulating policies and planning for health city development remains a profound challenge in building a global “health community.”MethodsThis study employs the Building Research Establishment’s International Healthy Cities Index (BRE HCI), encompassing ten environmental categories and fifty-eight indicators, to guide and support the scientific development of healthy cities. The entropy weight-TOPSIS method and the rank sum ratio (RSR) method were applied to comprehensively rank and categorize the health development levels of fifteen global cities. Furthermore, through cluster analysis, this research identifies universal and unique indicators that influence the development of healthy cities.ResultsThe results indicate that: (1) Within the scope of 58 evaluation indicators, the precedence in weight allocation is accorded to the kilometres of bicycle paths and lanes per 100,000 population (0.068), succeeded by m2 of public indoor recreation space per capita (0.047), and kilometres of bicycle paths and lanes per 100,000 population (0.042). (2) Among the ten environmental categories, the top three in terms of weight ranking are transport (0.239), leisure and recreation (0.172), and resilience (0.125). Significant disparities exist between different cities and environmental categories, with the issue of uneven health development within cities being particularly prominent. (3) The study categorizes the development levels of healthy cities into three tiers based on composite scores: it classifies Singapore, Shanghai, and Amsterdam at an excellent level; places Dubai and Johannesburg at a comparatively poor level; and situates the remaining ten cities at a moderate level. (4) The analysis identifies 53 international common indicators and 5 characteristic indicators from the 58 indicators based on the significance of the clustering analysis (p < 0.05).DiscussionThe study proposes four strategic recommendations based on these findings: establishing a comprehensive policy assurance system, refining urban spatial planning, expanding avenues for multi-party participation, and augmenting distinctive health indicators. These measures aim to narrow the developmental disparities between cities and contribute to healthy global cities’ balanced and sustainable growth. However, due to existing limitations in sample selection, research methodology application, and the control of potential confounding variables, further in-depth studies are required in the future.

AbstractContext As a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH). Recent studies indicated that the increased cardiovascular risk in patients with OSA may be mediated by accelerated vascular senescence. Danggui-Buxue decoction (DBD) has been used for treating cardiovascular diseases, but its mechanism of vascular senescence regulation is still unclear.Objective To investigate the effect of DBD on vascular senescence in mice exposed to CIH and to explore the role of the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway.Materials and methods C57BL/6N mice were randomly divided into Normoxia control group (CON), CIH (21%-5% O2, 20 times/h, 8 h/d) exposed group (CIH), and DBD treatment group (intragastrically treated with 2.34, 4.68, or 9.36 g/kg/day of DBD separately for 12 weeks as DBL, DBM, or DBH). Blood pressure, cardiac and vascular function, vascular senescence, inflammation response, oxidative stress, and Nrf2/HO-1 expression were determined.Results DBD (4.68 and 9.36 g/kg) significantly decreased Tail-cuff blood pressure, increased left ventricular systolic function, and alleviated arterial stiffness and vasorelaxation dysfunction in mice exposed to CIH. DBD treatment reduced SA-β-gal activity, decreased p16 (0.68-fold, 0.62-fold), P21 (0.58-fold, 0.52-fold), and p53 expressions (0.67-fold, 0.65-fold), and increased SIRT1 expression (2.22-fold, 2.98-fold) in the aortic. DBD treatment decreased IL-6, NF-κB, and TNF-α expressions, decreased MDA but increased SOD levels, and increased Nrf2 (1.8-fold, 1.89-fold) and HO-1 (2.25-fold, 2.43-fold) expression.Discussion and conclusions DBD could attenuate vascular senescence accelerated by CIH exposure through inhibiting inflammatory response and oxidative stress by activating the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway.

Broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum) is among the earliest domesticated staple crops in the world’s agricultural history and facilitated the development of several early agrarian cultures, particularly those originating in northern China. However, the propagation route of broomcorn millet in China from the Middle Ages to the present remains unclear. The aim of this study is to explore the genetic affinity between ancient and modern millet samples, trace the genetic origins and diffusion pathways of broomcorn millet, and provide insights into its domestication and spread. To achieve this, we sequence ancient DNA from broomcorn millet remains excavated from the Chashan Village cemetery (AD 691) in Gansu Province, China. Phylogenetic and population genetic analyses, integrating ancient and modern millet genomes, reveal a close genetic relationship between ancient millet and contemporary millet from Ningxia Province (445 km away from Chashan Village), suggesting a potential origin for the Chashan millet. This finding aligns with the tomb’s epitaph, which documents the reburial of the tomb’s owner, who was originally buried in Ningxia, and provides important archaeological evidence for understanding the interaction between geopolitical dynamics and the natural environment in northwest China during the late seventh century. Furthermore, outgroup-f3 and D statistics evidence suggests substantial genetic interactions between ancient millet and modern varieties from the Loess Plateau, Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, and Northeast Plain, indicating the dispersal route of broomcorn millet, along with human migration routes, from the northwest to northern China and ultimately to the northeast region, starting from the Middle Ages onward. This study enhances our understanding of millet’s genetic history, offers a novel perspective on burial archaeology, and provides valuable insights into the origins, domestication, and diffusion of broomcorn millet.

Abstract As an advanced amorphous material, sp 3 amorphous carbon exhibits exceptional mechanical, thermal and optical properties, but it cannot be synthesized by using traditional processes such as fast cooling liquid carbon and an efficient strategy to tune its structure and properties is thus lacking. Here we show that the structures and physical properties of sp 3 amorphous carbon can be modified by changing the concentration of carbon pentagons and hexagons in the fullerene precursor from the topological transition point of view. A highly transparent, nearly pure sp 3−hybridized bulk amorphous carbon, which inherits more hexagonal-diamond structural feature, was synthesized from C70 at high pressure and high temperature. This amorphous carbon shows more hexagonal-diamond-like clusters, stronger short/medium-range structural order, and significantly enhanced thermal conductivity (36.3 ± 2.2 W m−1 K−1) and higher hardness (109.8 ± 5.6 GPa) compared to that synthesized from C60. Our work thus provides a valid strategy to modify the microstructure of amorphous solids for desirable properties.

Creating healthy street environments to encourage physical activity is an effective strategy against non-communicable diseases exacerbated by rapid urbanization globally. Developing countries face more significant health challenges than developed ones. However, existing research predominantly focuses on the perspective of developed countries. To address the health challenges in developing nations, studies should not only draw on the findings from developed countries but also clearly define unique research processes and pathways. Consequently, this study conducts a comparative analysis between China, representing developing countries, and developed nations, using databases like China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Web of Science (WOS) and tools such as Citespace, Bicomb, and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) to explore research hotspots, developmental trajectories, thematic categories, and trends. The findings reveal a shift in developed countries from macro-material to micro-environmental elements under multidisciplinary scrutiny, while future topics may include street space evaluations and psychological healing. In China, research has been dominated by different disciplines at various stages, starting with medical attention to chronic disease prevention, which then shifted to traffic engineering’s focus on constructing green travel environments, and finally expanded to disciplines like landscape architecture examining the impact of street environment elements on pedestrian behavioural perceptions. Future themes will focus on promoting elderly health and urban health transport systems. Generally, research in developed countries exhibits a “bottom-up” approach, with practical issues at a “post-evaluation” stage, primarily based on the “socio-ecological model” and emphasizing multidisciplinary collaboration. Chinese research shows a “top-down” characteristic, driven by national policies and at a “pre-planning” stage, integrating theories such as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and attention restoration theory, with relatively loose disciplinary cooperation. Overall, research is shifting from macro to human-centric scales and is progressively utilizing multi-source and multi-scale big data analysis methods. Based on this, future research and development recommendations are proposed for developing countries, with China as a representative example.

Abstract Urban greening provides important ecosystem services and ideal places for urban recreation and is a serious consideration for municipal decision-makers. Among the tree species cultivated in urban green spaces, Robinia pseudoacacia stands out due to its attractive flowers, fragrances, high trunks, wide adaptability, and essential ecosystem services. However, the genomic basis and consequences of its wide-planting in urban green spaces remains unknown. Here, we report the chromosome-level genome assembly of R. pseudoacacia, revealing a genome size of 682.4 Mb and 33,187 protein-coding genes. More than 99.3% of the assembly is anchored to 11 chromosomes with an N50 of 59.9 Mb. Comparative genomic analyses among 17 species reveal that gene families related to traits favoured by urbanites, such as wood formation, biosynthesis, and drought tolerance, are notably expanded in R. pseudoacacia. Our population genomic analyses further recover 11 genes that are under recent selection. Ultimately, these genes play important roles in the biological processes related to flower development, water retention, and immunization. Altogether, our results reveal the evolutionary forces that shape R. pseudoacacia cultivated for urban greening. These findings also present a valuable foundation for the future development of agronomic traits and molecular breeding strategies for R. pseudoacacia.

Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) may play an important role in the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). However, the exact mechanism of CIH-induced myocardial injury in DCM remains unclear. In vivo, the db/db mice exposed to CIH were established, and in vitro, the H9C2 cells were exposed to high glucose (HG) combined with intermittent hypoxia (IH). The body weight (BW), fasting blood glucose (FBG) and food intake were measured every two weeks. The glycolipid metabolism was assessed with the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and insulin resistance (IR). Cardiac function was detected by echocardiography. Cardiac pathology was detected by HE staining, Masson staining, and transmission electron microscopy. The level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in myocardial tissue was detected by dihydroethidium (DHE). The apoptosis was detected by TUNEL staining. The cell viability, ROS, and the mitochondrial membrane potential were detected by the cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and related kits. Western blotting was used to analyze the liver kinase B1/AMP-activated protein kinase/ nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (LKB1/AMPK/Nrf2) signaling pathway. CIH exposure accelerated glycolipid metabolism disorders and cardiac injury, and increased the level of cardiac oxidative stress and the number of positive apoptotic cells in db/db mice. IH and HG decreased the cell viability and the level of mitochondrial membrane potential, and increased ROS expression in H9C2 cells. These findings indicate that CIH exposure promotes glycolipid metabolism disorders and myocardial apoptosis, aggravating myocardial injury via the LKB1/AMPK/Nrf2 pathway in vitro and in vivo.

Clean and efficient extraction and separation of precious metals from discarded Pb-Sn alloy is critical to the sustainable utilization of solid waste resources. Dense oxide layer and compact alloy texture in the waste Pb-Sn alloy pose challenges to the effective leaching process. Ultrasonic waves are demonstrated to improve separation efficiency via the favorable physical and chemical effects in solution system. In this study, ultrasound-assisted leaching technology is attempted to rapidly and selectively extract Pb from the waste Pb-Sn alloy, and gives emphasis on ultrasonic electrochemical behaviors. The Eh-pH diagrams of Sn-H2O and Pb-H2O systems were firstly analyzed to lay the selective dissolution foundation. It’s indicated that oxidizing HNO3 lixiviant is suitable to realize the selective separation of Pb. Both Sn and Pb can be dissolved to ionic Sn2+ and Pb2+ in the HNO3 solution. However, Sn2+ rapidly oxidizes to Sn4+ and Sn4+ further hydrolyzes to insoluble SnO2, which will agglomerate on unreacted materials to limit internal metal leaching in conventional leaching process. Due to the vibratory stripping of oxide layer by physical effect of ultrasound, the conventional acid leaching time for Pb extraction can be halved with the ultrasound assistance. About 99.12 % Pb and only 0.1 % Sn are dissolved in ultrasound-assisted leaching under the following optimal parameters: 0.5 mol/L HNO3, leaching temperature of 80 °C, time of 30 min, liquid-to-solid ratio of 20 mL/g, and ultrasound intensity of 0.52 W/cm2. Leaching kinetics of Pb, phase transition, microstructure evolution, Pb-Sn galvanic corrosion and dissolution polarization curve were studied to determine the ultrasonic enhanced dissolution mechanism. Notably, Pb and Sn form a microcorrosion galvanic cell in which Sn acts as a cathode and is protected while the Pb undergoes intensifying corrosion as the anode giving rise to the higher Pb dissolution efficiency. Eventually, it’s suggested that Pb can be rapidly extracted and separated from the waste Pb-Sn alloy during the ultrasound-assisted HNO3 leaching process via the ultrasound physical and chemical effects, especially the sonochemistry aspect of intensified spot corrosion and galvanic corrosion. The proposed ultrasonic electrochemical corrosion in this work were applicable to the extraction of valuable metals from various waste alloys through leaching method.

Abstract Antigen self-assembly nanovaccines advance the minimalist design of therapeutic cancer vaccines, but the issue of inefficient cross-presentation has not yet been fully addressed. Herein, we report a unique approach by combining the concepts of “antigen multi-copy display” and “calcium carbonate (CaCO3) biomineralization” to increase cross-presentation. Based on this strategy, we successfully construct sub-100 nm biomineralized antigen nanosponges (BANSs) with high CaCO3 loading (38.13 wt%) and antigen density (61.87%). BANSs can be effectively uptaken by immature antigen-presenting cells (APCs) in the lymph node upon subcutaneous injection. Achieving efficient spatiotemporal coordination of antigen cross-presentation and immune effects, BANSs induce the production of CD4+ T helper cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes, resulting in effective tumor growth inhibition. BANSs combined with anti-PD-1 antibodies synergistically enhance anti-tumor immunity and reverse the tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment. Overall, this CaCO3 powder-mediated biomineralization of antigen nanosponges offer a robust and safe strategy for cancer immunotherapy.

Gallium (Ga), indium (In), and germanium (Ge) play an important role in the modern high-tech material field. Due to their low content and scattered distribution in the crust, and the increasing demand for these metals in recent years, their supply risks have sharply increased. Therefore, the recycling of these metals is of great significance. In this work, a systematic review was performed using the Web of Science, Scopus, MDPI, Elsevier, and Springer Link databases. The combined terms used for the search were Ga/In/Ge, extraction, separation, and recycling. After a careful evaluation of the titles, abstracts, and full texts, a total of 106 articles were included. This paper briefly describes the resource features of Ga, In, and Ge. After that, the chemical principles, technical parameters, and metal recovery in various extraction and separation methods from monometallic and polymetallic resources are systematically reviewed. Leaching followed by solvent extraction or ion exchange is the main process for Ga, In, and Ge recovery. Although many attempts have been made to separate multiple metals from leaching solutions, highly selective solvents and resins are still the research priority. This review can provide theoretical and technical guidance for the separation of Ga, In, and Ge from various resources.

Due to global climate change, seasonal droughts have intensified and become more frequent in certain semi-arid regions, and plants often adjust their water uptake depths to adapt to shifting environmental conditions. The southern Greater Khingan Mountains have a large natural secondary forest area and act as an important ecological barrier. This study focused on examining the water use patterns of the primary plant species, Betula platyphylla, within the natural secondary forest of the southern Greater Khingan Mountains. The investigation utilized oxygen stable isotope techniques and covered a timeframe spanning from July 2019 to September 2020. The findings indicate that the adaptable water utilization strategies and rapid response to precipitation could facilitate plants fully utilizing water from all depths, thereby enabling them to better adapt to arid environments. When the rainfall was low (390.4 mm in the growing season of 2019), the developed shallow roots quickly absorbed shallow soil water (0–20 cm, with a utilization ratio of 40.4% for the entire root depth), but when the rainfall increased (501.5 mm in the growing season of 2020), Betula platyphylla gradually transitioned to extracting soil water from deeper soil layers (40–60 cm) and deepened its root system (with a utilization ratio of 39.4%), indicating its adaptability to semi-arid environments. Therefore, the flexible water use strategy of Betula platyphylla in the same habitat may give it a competitive advantage during low rainfall periods. The findings are important for the protection of natural forests and water management in the southern Greater Khingan Mountains.

Here, we report significant pressure-modulate optoelectronic properties of NiPS3. Upon compression, NiPS3 exhibited a photocurrent increase of five orders of magnitude over the initial value. Interestingly, when NiPS3 was finally decompressed to ambient conditions, the photocurrent could maintain a two-order-of-magnitude enhancement. In addition, the spectral response range was extended to the near-infrared spectral range (up to 1650 nm) under high pressure. Raman and XRD measurements and theoretical calculations revealed significant enhancement in both interlayer and intralayer interactions during compression, leading to a remarkable modulation of the optoelectronic properties.

Abstract Background Heteroplexis Chang is an endangered genus endemic to China with important ecological and medicinal value. However, due to the lack of genetic data, our conservation strategies have repeatedly been delayed by controversial phylogenetic (molecular) relationships within the genera. In this study, we reported three new Heteroplexis chloroplast (cp.) genomes (H. vernonioides, H. impressinervia and H. microcephala) to clarify phylogenetic relationships between species allocated in this genus and other related Compositae. Results All three new cp. genomes were highly conserved, showing the classic four regions. Size ranged from 152,984 − 153,221 bp and contained 130 genes (85 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA, eight rRNA) and two pseudogenes. By comparative genomic and phylogenetic analyses, we found a large-scale inversion of the entire large single-copy (LSC) region in H. vernonioides, H. impressinervia and H. microcephala, being experimentally verified by PCR. The inverted repeat (IR) regions showed high similarity within the five Heteroplexis plastomes, showing small-size contractions. Phylogenetic analyses did not support the monophyly of Heteroplexis genus, whereas clustered the five species within two differentiated clades within Aster genus. These phylogenetic analyses suggested that the five Heteroplexis species might be subsumed into the Aster genus. Conclusion Our results enrich the data on the cp. genomes of the genus Heteroplexis, providing valuable genetic resources for future studies on the taxonomy, phylogeny, and evolution of Aster genus.
