The separation of wireless and wired systems is rapidly disappearing. A mobile extension to an enterprise system infrastructure has offered attractive but challenging business cases for system developers. While accomplishing this task one will face many problems that arise from the differences between the environments and limited resources of mobile devices. This paper presents a distributed binary-based message-oriented middleware solution, database synchronization scheme and user interface design to bridge the gap between the enterprise and mobile domains. The research is based on the constructive method of the related publications and experimentation with the selected technologies. The research results are derived by analyzing the M4MAMI pilot system implementation. The main advantages of the solution are the minimization of communication overhead compared to text-based approaches, database synchronization technique that decreases data traffic over wireless connection and user interface design for mobile device that displays information in user friendly manner. In the modern era of industrial automation, the term Industry 4.0 is defined as the fourth industrial revolution. This is a phenomenon where technologies from various layers of an enterprise are interconnected and form a meshed network of self-regulated, adaptive, re-configurable and self-optimizing devices. These devices vary from Programmable Logic Controller, embedded PCs, edge nodes, smart sensors, and actuators, working as proxies or mediators for a real object in the software domain integrating into Intelligent Enterprise Applications. Heterogeneous configuration interfaces of these devices hinder smooth integration and configuration process. A unified way of interacting with the devices for configuration is well-defined in the IEC 61499 standard. The standard defines the commands, interaction behavior, and interface description for the control devices and engineering tools. There are implementations of the configuration interface in XML and Binary XML, which are widely used for their flexible, extensible, and human-readable nature. Whereas the OPC UA can offer an open configuration interface for the IEC 61499 devices and software tools, with built-in interoperability solutions. This paper introduces the concept of a new configuration interface for the IEC 61499 devices using OPC UA information modeling concepts.

- Abstract
The transfer of streaming data is not well supported by current web services standards. To include multimedia streaming support in the web services domain, this paper presents a novel multimedia streaming web services framework for the transfer of streaming multimedia content. First, the framework includes an implementation of a query service for publishing a description of the multimedia content that is input to or output from a multimedia web service. This query service is specified in an extension of WSDL. Using MPEG-7 metadata, content descriptions can be queried before the invocation of a multimedia web service. Second, two new MEPs and their SOAP HTTP bindings are created for the exchange of streaming data between two SOAP endpoints. The implementations of these new MEPs use the MIME multipart/related structure and MTOM packaging when transferring the multimedia packets as SOAP messages. To reduce the transfer overhead introduced by the packaging method, this paper investigated extensively the application of various compression schemes for the SOAP messages as well as for the packaging of the binary packet data. Experiments show that the proposed framework can achieve a performance comparable to a simple HTTP multimedia streaming method. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The article discusses the most relevant state-of-the-art technologies for compressing Extensible Markup Language (XML) data. It presents a novel solution for compacting Simple Object Access Protocol messages. The compressor utilizes structure information from an XML Schema or Web service definition language document in order to achieve significantly better compression rates than current approaches. It exploits the fact that Web service messages are described by an XML grammar that is known to both the sender and the receiver. A large part of the information contained in a message can be inferred from this grammar.

Dealing with heterogeneous data underlying fuzzy XML databases is challenging for any task of document management and knowledge discovery, since the structural heterogeneity and uncertainty of the large number of XML data sources make it difficult to effectively answer the structured query, especially the tree-pattern query. To address this issue, we propose a novel framework for managing fuzzy XML queries in a heterogeneous environment in this paper. In particular, we devise a holistic algorithm for matching tree-patterns over heterogeneous fuzzy XML data. Our approach adopts a compact stack technique and generates the matches by one scan on the relevant data associated with the tree-pattern, which eliminates re-scanning unnecessary portions of XML documents and redundant intermediate results. Finally, a comprehensive experimental evaluation conducted on real and synthetic data sets is carried out to show the significance of our approach as a solution for querying heterogeneous data in fuzzy XML documents.

A new structure for streaming the XML data is proposed which guarantees confidentiality of the XML data over the wireless stream. An access mechanism is proposed to efficiently process XML queries over the encrypted XML stream. Recently, the use of XML for data broadcasting in mobile wireless networks has gained many attentions. One of the most essential requirements for such networks is data confidentiality. In order to secure XML data broadcast in mobile wireless networks, mobile clients should obey a set of access authorizations specified on the original XML document. In such environments, mobile clients can only access authorized parts of encrypted XML stream based on their access authorizations. Several indexing methods have been proposed in order to have selective access to XML data over the XML stream. However, these indexing methods cannot be used for encrypted XML data. In this paper, we define a new structure for XML stream which supports data confidentiality of XML data over the wireless broadcast channel. We also define an access mechanism for our proposed structure to efficiently process XML queries over the encrypted XML stream. The experimental results demonstrate that the use of our proposed structure and access mechanism for XML data broadcast efficiently disseminates XML data in mobile wireless networks.

Since XML has become a standard for information exchange over the Internet, more and more data are represented as XML. XML keyword search has been attracted a lot of interests because it provides a simple and user-friendly interface to query XML documents. This paper provides a survey on keyword search over XML document. We mainly focus on the topics of defining semantics for XML keyword search and the corresponding algorithms to find answers based on these semantics. We classify existing works for XML keyword search into three main types, which are tree-based approaches, graph-based approaches and semantics-based approaches. For each type of approaches, we further classify works into sub-classes and especially we summarize, make comparison and point out the relationships among sub-classes. In addition, for each type of approach, we point out the common problems they suffer

XML-based publish/subscribe (pub/sub) systems have been receiving a great deal of attention from the academic community and the industry. This research focuses on efficient pub/sub systems and considers the devising of XML-based pub/sub systems from the perspective of subscription/query and publication message delivery. Existing research mainly focuses on the efficiency of XML publication message filtering algorithms. Not much research, however, has considered using the system or the communication model in the context of XML publication messages delivery. This paper presents innovative XML delivery techniques, the cross-layer model and the peer model; both techniques make use of publisher and customer edge brokers for efficient XML subscription aggregation and publication message delivery. The primary contribution of the proposed models is the reduction of the number of XML publication message filtering and XPath query aggregation operations performed in the conventional filter-based XML multicast model, which has a high computational overhead. The main idea is to store user subscriptions at customer and publisher edge brokers which are either directly connected or close to the subscribers and the publisher, respectively. We have performed a number of experiments within a controlled local area network (LAN) environment for demonstration of the basic concepts underlying the techniques and in the Amazon cloud environment that emulates the wide area network (WAN). Both the cross-layer and the peer models can reduce the end-to-end (E2E) delay in message delivery. For example, the results obtained from experiments in a LAN demonstrate several-fold performance improvement in E2E delay for both the cross-layer and the peer models compared to the conventional filter-based XML multicast model, and the results using the cloud show an improvement as high as 64% in E2E delay for the peer model over the multicast model.

Driven by the emerging network data exchange and storage, XML documents classification has become increasingly important. Most existing representation model and conventional learning algorithm are defined on certain XML documents. However, in many real-world applications, XML datasets contain inherent uncertainty, which brings greater challenges to classification problem. In this paper, we propose a novel solution to classify uncertain XML documents, including uncertain XML documents representation and two uncertain learning algorithms based on Extreme Learning Machine. Experimental results show that our approaches exhibit prominent performance for uncertain XML documents classification problem.

Due to recent development in mobile devices, the mobile device utilization and many related applications have been increasing. Most of initial applications on mobile devices just showed simple information, but now they processes huge data. However, smart devices have certain limitations in processing massive data. Especially, if the size of data increases, the speed of data processing adversely decreases, so the performance of programs also decreases. If hardware specification of the mobile devices is not enough to handle it, response time will be drastically delayed. To overcome these drawbacks, most of application running on mobile devices communicate with their servers to manage data. XML is a proper language for data communication to send and receive data between servers and mobile devices, because it defines rules of document`s format and it is a textual data format and small-sized language. However, mobile devices have limitation such as memory, CPU and wireless network to process huge data and XML also takes a lot of time to communicate with servers and devices and handle data, so it could be overhead in service time. Binary XML is an alternative of performance improvement in data processing, which has XML`s benefits and minimizes the XML size by binary coding. However, most of binaryXML which are used on applications don`t fit on mobile applications. In this paper, we surveyed many kinds of binaryXML, compared merits and demerits to find a binaryXML for mobile applications. We propose how to use binary XML and implemented an electronic attendance system using binary XML to overcome the limitation of XML and to reduce the load of data communications between servers and devices.

Mining the web data is one of the emerging researches in data mining. The HTML can be used for maintaining the web data but it is hard to achieve the accurate web mining results from HTML documents. The XML documents make more convenient for finding the properties in web mining. Association rule based mining discovers the temporal associations among XML documents. But this kind of data mining is not sufficient to retrieve the properties of every XML document. Finding the properties for set of similar documents is better idea rather than to find the property of a single document. Hence, the key contribution of the work is to find the meaningful clustered based associations by association rule based clustering. Therefore, this paper proposes a hybrid approach which discovers the frequent XML documents by association rule mining and then find the clustering of XML documents by classical k-means algorithm. The proposed approach was tested with real data of Wikipedia. The comparative study and result analysis are discussed in the paper for knowing the importance of the proposed work.

Searching large XML repositories is a challenging research problem. The application of clustering on a large repository before performing a search enhances the search process significantly. Clustering reduces a search space into smaller XML collections that can be better searched. In this work, we present an enhanced XML clustering by structure method. Also, we introduce a new representation of XML structure that keeps all characteristics of XML structure without summarization. Then, we perform a benchmark comparison between the search results of our improved method to SAXON and Qizx XML XQuery processors. The comparison focuses on search processing time and accuracy of the results using different sizes of datasets for both homogeneous and heterogeneous XML documents. The attained results show better accuracy at the same level of performance.

Wireless data broadcast is an efficient way of delivering data of common interest to a large population of mobile devices within a proximate area, such as smart cities, battle fields, etc. In this work, we focus ourselves on studying the data placement problem of periodic XML data broadcast in mobile and wireless environments. This is an important issue, particularly when XML becomes prevalent in today’s ubiquitous and mobile computing devices and applications. Taking advantage of the structured characteristics of XML data, effective broadcast programs can be generated based on the XML data on the server only. An XML data broadcast system is developed and a theoretical analysis on the XML data placement on a wireless channel is also presented, which forms the basis of the novel data placement algorithm in this work. The proposed algorithm is validated through a set of experiments. The results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively place XML data on air and significantly improve the overall access efficiency.

The idea of distributed application development is not new. Distributed technologies such as Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM), Remote Method Invocation (RMI), and Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) have existed for years. However, none of these technologies is an unambiguous industry standard. That is where standards based services step in. A service exposes some functionality as an API (Application Programming Interface) that the clients can consume. The data transfer between the client and the service usually happens in a format known to both the parties (such binary, SOAP, XML, and JSON).

In real-world Web applications, information is often vague or ambiguous. Fuzzy XML databases have been proposed to manage data exchanges among different imprecise and uncertain XML documents. However, data collected from different data sources referring to the same real-world object may conflict. It is the task of the data management system to resolve the conflicts and integrate the data without any interference from a user. In order to integrate data from multiple autonomous fuzzy XML databases, an integration of fuzzy XML data has to be performed. In this paper, we take a first step in a fundamental consolidation of the fuzzy XML data model. In particular, we investigate the integration technique, which is designed to integrate fuzzy XML data collected from different data sources. We develop a basic framework for detecting conflicts and overlaps in fuzzy XML documents. In addition, we propose an approach for reconciling the fuzzy XML data collected from different data sources.

a b s t r a c t The emergence of XML adoption as semi-structured data representation in multi-disciplinary domains has highlighted the need to support the optimization of complex data retrieval processing. In a Big Data environment, the need to speed up data retrieval processes has further grown significantly. In this paper, we have adopted an optimization approach that takes into consideration the semantics of the dataset in order to deal with the complexity of multi-disciplinary domains in Big Data, in particular when the data is represented as XML documents. Our method particularly addresses a twig XML query (or a branched path query), as it is one of the most costly query tasks due to the complexity of the join operation between multiple paths. Our work focuses on optimizing the structural and the content part of XML queries by presenting a method for indexing and processing XML data based on the concept of objects that is formed from the semantic connectivity between XML data nodes. Our method performs object-based data partitioning, which aims at leveraging the notion of frequently-accessed data subsets and putting these subsets together into adjacent partitions. Then, it evaluates branched queries through two essential components: (i) Structural and Content indexing, which use an object-based connection to construct indices i.e. Schema Index, Data Index and Value Index; and (ii) query processing to produce the final results in optimal time. At the end of this paper, a set of experimental results for the proposed approach on a range of real and synthetic XML data, as well as a comparative study with other related work in the area, are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method in terms of CPU cost, matching and merging cost, scalability (size and number of branches) and total number of scanned elements. Our evaluation demonstrates the benefit of the proposed index in terms of performance speed as well as scalability which is critical in a large data repository.

XML data broadcast is an efficient way to disseminate semistructured information in wireless mobile environments. In this paper, we propose a novel two-tier index structure to facilitate the access of XML document in an on-demand broadcast system. It provides the clients with an overall image of all the XML documents available at the server side and hence enables the clients to locate complete result sets accordingly. A pruning strategy is developed to cut down the index size and a two-tier structure is proposed to further remove any redundant information. In addition, two index distribution strategies, namely naive distribution and partial distribution, have been designed to interleave the index information with the XML documents in the wireless channels. Theoretical analysis and simulation experiments are also put forward to show the benefits of our indexing methods.

While extensive standards for corpus encoding exist - most notably, the Text Encoding Initiative’s Guidelines and the Corpus Encoding Standard based on them - these are rather heavyweight approaches, implicitly intended for major corpus-building projects, which are rather different from the increasingly common efforts in corpus construction undertaken by individual researchers in support of their personal research goals. Therefore, there is a clear benefit to be had from a set of recommendations (not a standard) that outlines general best practices in the use of XML in corpora without going into any of the more technical aspects of XML or the full weight of TEI encoding. This paper presents such a set of suggestions, dubbed Modest XML for Corpora, and posits that such a set of pointers to a limited level of XML knowledge could work as part of the normal, general training of corpus linguists. The Modest XML recommendations cover the following set of things, which, according to the foregoing argument, are sufficient knowledge about XML for most corpus linguists’ day-to-day needs: use of tags; adding attribute value pairs; recommended use of attributes; nesting of tags; encoding of special characters; XML well-formedness; a collection of de facto standard tags and attributes; going beyond the basic de facto standard tags; and text headers.

XML can supply the standard data type in information exchange format on a lot of data generated in running database or applied programs for a company by using the advantage that it can describe meaningful information directly. Accordingly since there are increasing needs for the efficient management and telemedicine security of the massive volume of XML data, it is necessary to develop a secure access control mechanism for XML. The existing access control has not taken information structures and semantics into full consideration due to the fundamental limitations of HTML. In addition, access control for XML documents allows read operations only, and there are problems of slowing down the system performance due to the complex authorization evaluation process. To resolve this problem, this paper designs and builds a XACS (XML Access Control System), which is capable of making fined-grained access control. This only provides data corresponding to its users' authority levels by authorizing them to access only the specific items of XML documents when they are searching XML documents in telemedicine. To accomplish this, XACS eliminates certain parts of the documents that are inaccessible and transmits the parts accessible depending on the users' authority levels. In addition, it can be expanded to existing web servers because XML documents are used based on the normal web sites. The telemedicine secure and the guidelines are provided to enable quick and precise understanding of the information, and thus the safety enhancement gets improved. Ultimately, this paper suggests an empirical telemedicine application to confirm the adequacy and validity using the proposed method.

The rationale of XML design is to transfer and store data at different levels. A key feature of these levels in an XML document is to identify its components for additional processing. XML components can expose sensitive information after application of data mining techniques over a shared database. Therefore, privacy preservation of sensitive information must be ensured prior to signify the outcome especially in sensitive XML Association Rules. Privacy issues in XML domain are not exceptionally addressed to determine a solution by the academia in a reliable and precise manner. In this paper, we have proposed a model for identifying sensitive items nodes to declare sensitive XML association rules and then to hide them. Bayesian networks-based central tendency measures are applied in declaration of sensitive XML association rules. K2 algorithm is used to generate Bayesian networks to ensure reliability and accuracy in preserving privacy of XML Association Rules. The proposed model is tested and compared using several case studies and large UCI machine learning datasets. The experimental results show improved accuracy and reliability of proposed model without any side effects such as new rules and lost rules. The proposed model uses the same minimum support threshold to find XML Association Rules from the original and transformed data sources. The significance of the proposed model is to minimize an incredible disclosure risk involved in XML association rule mining from external parties in a competitive business environment.

Extensible Markup Language XML has quickly become a mainstream language in software development. Not only is it used for message and document interchange, it is also used to define application logic and interfaces. However, modern general purpose integrated development environments have rather limited support for XML development. The wide variety of XML-based languages makes it a challenge to build tools for comprehensive support of XML development. In this paper, we present extensions to a library exposed as an add-in for Microsoft Visual Studio and a command line tool to improve the development experience by providing access to subscribable service-based pluggable helper tools. The architecture of the solution allows easier publishing and deployment of the tools, minimising the exposure of development data to third parties and providing service providers with much needed tool usage and development process data. The tools offer developers new means to check their files against good and bad practices, automatically fix errors in XML or improve the files' conformance with development guidelines, current state of project with other projects, or run service queries to estimate their projects future progress. The XML documents are nested and semi-structured, but the traditional access control mechanism is coarse-grained and not applicable. We proposed an XML access control model (XACM) for XML repository. The XACM provides a fine granular definition for XML authorizations, which is based on the self-description characteristic of XML. We also discuss how to use the XACM to automatically preserve the access control policy, when relational databases are published as XML documents. Finally, we present the implementation of the XACM in an actual XML publisher system. Comparing with existing related works, the XACM is more flexible, efficient and less overheads.

XML has already been the standard of data interchange on the Internet. Nowadays, a large amount of data is represented in XML format. However, most of the critical data in businesses are still stored in relational database management systems. It is difficult to query XML databases because of its textual format. This research intends to tackle this problem, and we proposed a system to manage XML documents that could be queried by the query language XQuery. XML documents are stored in relational format and the XQuery expressions are translated into appropriate SQL queries. The results of the SQL queries are transformed into XML documents. Comparing with LegoDB System, our system reduces processing time to search a relation configuration and proposes a better translating and executing technique which is more efficiently.

Over the past decade, there has been increasing interest in using extensible markup language (XML) which has made it a de facto standard for representing and exchanging data over different systems and platforms (specifically the internet). Due to the popularity of XML and with increasing numbers of XML documents, the process of knowledge discovery from this type of data has found more attention. Although in the last decade several different methods have been proposed for mining XML documents, this research field still is in its infancy compared to traditional data mining. As in relational techniques, in the case of XML documents, association rule mining has a strong research interest. In this paper we have performed a comprehensive study on all of the major works so far done on mining association rules from XML documents. The main contribution of the paper is to provide a reference point for future researches by collecting different techniques and methods concerning the topic; classifying them into a number of categories and creating a complete bibliography of the major published works. We think that this paper can help researchers in XML association rules mining domains to quickly find the current work as the basis for the future activities.

Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple, flexible text format derived from SGML, which is originally designed to support large-scale electronic publishing. Nowadays XML plays a fundamental role in the exchange of a wide variety of data on the Web. As XML allows designers to create their own customized tags, enables the definition, transmission, validation, and interpretation of data between applications, devices and organizations, lots of works in soft computing employ XML to take control and responsibility for the information, such as fuzzy markup language, and accordingly there are lots of XML-based data or documents. However, most of mobile and interactive ubiquitous multimedia devices have restricted hardware such as CPU, memory, and display screen. So, it is essential to compress an XML document/element collection to a brief summary before it is delivered to the user according to his/her information need. Query-oriented XML text summarization aims to provide users a brief and readable substitution of the original retrieved documents/elements according to the user's query, which can relieve users' reading burden effectively. We propose a query-oriented XML summarization system QXMLSum, which extracts sentences and combines them as a summary based on three kinds of features: user's queries, the content of XML documents/elements, and the structure of XML documents/elements. Experiments on the IEEE-CS datasets used in Initiative for the Evaluation of XML Retrieval show that the query-oriented XML summary generated by QXMLSum is competitive.

Uncertain relational data management has been investigated for a few years, but few works on uncertain XML. The natural structures with high flexibility make XML more appropriate for representing uncertain information. Based on the semantic of possible world and probabilistic models with independent distribution and mutual exclusive distribution nodes, the problem of how to generate instance from a probabilistic XML and calculate its probability was studied, which is one of the key problems of uncertain XML management. Moreover, an algorithm for a generating XML document from a probabilistic XML and calculating its probability are also proposed, which has linear time complexity. Finally, experiment results are made to show up the correct and efficiency of the algorithm.

XML is extensively used in web services for integration and data exchange. Its popularity and wide adoption make it an attractive target for attackers and a number of XML-based attack types have been reported recently. This raises the need for cost-effective, automated testing of web services to detect XML-related vulnerabilities, which is the focus of this paper. We discuss a taxonomy of the types of XML injection attacks and use it to derive four different ways to mutate XML messages, turning them into attacks (tests) automatically. Further, we consider domain constraints and attack grammars, and use a constraint solver to generate XML messages that are both malicious and valid, thus making it more difficult for any protection mechanism to recognise them. As a result, such messages have a better chance to detect vulnerabilities. Our evaluation on an industrial case study has shown that a large proportion (78.86%) of the attacks generated using our approach could circumvent the first layer of security protection, an XML gateway (firewall), a result that is much better than what a state-of-the-art tool based on fuzz testing could achieve.

The development of information technology has resulted in its penetration into every area of clinical research. Various clinical systems have been developed, which produce increasing volumes of clinical data. However, saving, exchanging, querying, and exploiting these data are challenging issues. The development of Extensible Markup Language (XML) has allowed the generation of flexible information formats to facilitate the electronic sharing of structured data via networks, and it has been used widely for clinical data processing. In particular, XML is very useful in the fields of data standardization, data exchange, and data integration. Moreover, ontologies have been attracting increased attention in various clinical fields in recent years. An ontology is the basic level of a knowledge representation scheme, and various ontology repositories have been developed, such as Gene Ontology and BioPortal. The creation of these standardized repositories greatly facilitates clinical research in related fields. In this chapter, we discuss the basic concepts of XML and ontologies, as well as their clinical applications.

It also extends the concept of Information hiding which overcomes the hidden problem of traditional XML digital signature generation called “MID-WAY READING”. The security of the document is ensured by a process called ‘information hiding’. The document to be sent is digitally signed as well as encrypted and thereby ensuring excellent security level during the business transactions in an e-commerce environment and in addition to that, the private key used for signing the document is stored in a virtual smart card that provides enhanced security.
