The European 1 MW, 170 GHz CW industrial prototype gyrotron for ECRH&CD on ITER was under test at the KIT test facility during 2016. In order to optimize the gyrotron operation, the tube was thoroughly tested in the short-pulse regime, with pulse lengths below 10 ms, for a wide range of operational parameters. The operation was extended to longer pulses with a duration of up to 180 s. In this work we present in detail the achievements and the challenges that were faced during the long-pulse experimental campaign.

Physics - Plasma Physics - Abstract
Results from the last FTU campaigns on the deuterium large (wrt FTU volume) pellet REs suppression capability, mainly due to the induced burst MHD activity expelling REs seed are presented for discharges with 0.5 MA and 5.3T. Clear indications of avalanche multiplication of REs following single pellet injection on 0.36 MA flat-top discharges is shown together with quantitative indications of dissipative effects in terms of critical electrical field increase due to fan-like instabilities. Analysis of large fan-like instabilities on post-disruption RE beams, that seem to be correlated with low electrical field and background density drops, reveal their strong RE energy suppression capability suggesting a new strategy for RE energy suppression controlling large fan instabilities. We demonstrate how such density drops can be induced using modulated ECRH power on post-disruption beams., Comment: DRAFT that will be submitted to NF (the conference version is on FEC/IAEA conference 2020)

Physics - Plasma Physics - Abstract
Radiofrequency emission in the 0.4 - 3 GHz range from FTU plasmas in presence of runaway electrons (RE) has been measured with unprecedentedly high time resolution. Rapid emission bursts associated with enhanced RE pitch angle scattering reveal kinetic instabilities affecting evolution of the RE population from the buildup phase. Such measurements also provide a sensitive monitor for instabilities during early RE formation. The leading edge of radio bursts is much shorter than interleaving periods of low emission; spectral broadening during growth indicates nonlinear wave coupling as an explanation for the observed intermittency. Radiofrequency emission disappears at the beginning of post-disruption RE plateaus, and subsequently reappears in the shape of very intense bursts accompanied by strong rises of suprathermal electron cyclotron emission., Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures. Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
An upgraded version of a quasi-optical diplexer combiner, based on a resonating system coupling two transmission lines using three Dielectric Beam Splitters, has been realized and tested. This device is principally thought to combine power coming from different transmission lines into a single output or to switch the injected power between different outputs, but it could also be used as mode filter or in line viewing system for Electron Cyclotron Emission (ECE) or Collective Thomson Scattering (CTS) diagnostics. The design was implemented in order to link two transmission lines of the ECRH system on FTU, for power combination of two beams into a single line of the new ECRH launcher recently installed. This device is based on Dielectric Beam Splitters (DBS); it has been tested at low power in order to confirm the splitting ratio foreseen from simulation and its efficiency has been evaluated measuring the beam exiting the system. The design and the characterization of the diplexer combiner are reported in this paper.

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
Assistance of EC wave for plasma breakdown and current ramp up is the proposed scenario for the ITER case, characterized by low toroidal electric field. The experimental results on many tokamaks clearly indicate the capabilities of the proposed scheme to have a robust breakdown in ITER. The key aspect of this technique is the EC power required, strongly related to the absorption of the wave in the initial stage of plasma formation. This aspect is generally neglected due to the diagnostics difficulties in the plasma formation phase. As a consequence a multi-pass absorption scheme is usually considered reasonable, leading to a strong absorption after many reflections on the walls. The present study exploits the high temporal and spatial resolution of the fast scanning interferometer of FTU together with the measure of residual power obtained by a sniffer probe. The absorbed EC power is calculated considering also the polarization rotation and the subsequent mode conversion after incidence on the internal wall and compared with that derived from experimental data. The resulting EC power distribution can explain differences observed between perpendicular and oblique injection results, indicating future investigations to define ITER power requirements.

The Real-Time system for the control of the magnetohydrodynamics instabilities in FTU tokamak is presented. It is based on both a-priori information derived from statistical treatment of a database and Real-Time elaboration of live diagnostics data. The analysis codes are executed in different time threads based on multi-processors machines. The actuator is the 2×0.4MW 140 GHz ECRH system equipped with the new fast quasi-optical steerable launcher.

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
The Electron Cyclotron (EC) fast launcher for real time control experiments has been installed on FTU and characterized to be fully integrated in a real-time MHD control module under development. The launcher scheme is based on a two module system, symmetric with respect to the equatorial plane of FTU, with a front steering concept and the launched beams are real-time controllable both in poloidal and toroidal directions. Specific design parameters, defined by the FTU MHD dynamics (typically island size and q profile changes), are the beam dimensions with zooming capabilities, the steering range and mirror speed with the most demanding requirement on poloidal speed of the Steering Mirror (SM) Δθ = 1° in 10 ms. A set of tests has been done to verify the system performance. High power tests of the launcher have been done on a 500 kA, 0.5·1020m−3 and 5.3 T plasma with 2·300 kW of EC power delivered to the plasma. The steering mechanism was tested under the automatic control system and showed a dynamic response in line with the requirements. Results of these tests will be presented in the paper.

Physics - Plasma Physics - Abstract
Experimental results on the position and current control of disruption generated runaway electrons (RE) in FTU are presented. A scanning interferometer diagnostic has been used to analyze the time evolution of the RE beam radial position and its instabilities. Correspondence of the interferometer time traces, radial profile reconstructed via magnetic measurements and fission chamber signals are discussed. New RE control algorithms, which define in real-time updated plasma current and position references, have been tested in two experimental scenarios featuring disruption generated RE plateaus. Comparative studies among 52 discharges with disruption generated RE beam plateaus are presented in order to assess the effectiveness of the proposed control strategies as the RE beam interaction with the plasma facing components is reduced while the current is ramped-down.

Physics - Biological Physics ,Physics - Computational Physics - Abstract
We extend the weighted ensemble (WE) path sampling method to perform rigorous statistical sampling for systems at steady state. The straightforward steady-state implementation of WE is directly practical for simple landscapes, but not when significant metastable intermediates states are present. We therefore develop an enhanced WE scheme, building on existing ideas, which accelerates attainment of steady state in complex systems. We apply both WE approaches to several model systems confirming their correctness and efficiency by comparison with brute-force results. The enhanced version is significantly faster than the brute force and straightforward WE for systems with WE bins that accurately reflect the reaction coordinate(s). The new WE methods can also be applied to equilibrium sampling, since equilibrium is a steady state.

Physics - Biological Physics ,Physics - Computational Physics - Abstract
Finding and sampling multiple reaction channels for molecular transitions remains an important challenge in physical chemistry. Here we show that the weighted ensemble (WE) path sampling method can readily sample multiple channels. In a first test, both the WE and transition path sampling methods are applied to two-dimensional model potentials. The comparison explains why the weighted ensemble approach will not be trapped in one channel. The WE approach is then used to sample the full transition path ensemble in implicitly solvated alanine dipeptide at two different temperatures. The ensembles are of sufficient quality to permit quantification of the fractional importance of each channel, even at T=300K when brute-force simulation is prohibitively expensive., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures and 2 tables

Physics - Computational Physics ,Physics - Chemical Physics - Abstract
The "weighted ensemble" method, introduced by Huber and Kim, [G. A. Huber and S. Kim, Biophys. J. 70, 97 (1996)], is one of a handful of rigorous approaches to path sampling of rare events. Expanding earlier discussions, we show that the technique is statistically exact for a wide class of Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics. The derivation is based on standard path-integral (path probability) ideas, but recasts the weighted-ensemble approach as simple "resampling" in path space. Similar reasoning indicates that arbitrary nonstatic binning procedures, which merely guide the resampling process, are also valid. Numerical examples confirm the claims, including the use of bins which can adaptively find the target state in a simple model., Comment: Minor refinements to previous

The public sector audit is a cornerstone for an effective corporate governance. However, its effectiveness largely depends on the scope of audit conducted in public sector agencies. Therefore, this paper examines scope of audit and its effects on the effectiveness of public sector audit in Malaysia. The respondents include the public sector auditors. By employing non-probability purposive sampling using 203 respondents and analysed using Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), it was discovered that the scope of audit have a significant positive effect on the effectiveness of public sector audit. The finding reveals that performance and compliance auditing is crucial in public sector. A sound regulatory mechanism in terms of rewards and punishment should be fair and clear. This is important to ensure that the internal auditors strictly address the non-performance behaviours of the government. The research topic is relatively new in Malaysian public sector. This study is therefore likely to significantly contribute to the knowledge about how scope of audit operates in a public sector agencies context that differs significantly from the contexts of private sector agencies.

- Abstract
The tokamak à configuration variable (TCV) continues to leverage its unique shaping capabilities, flexible heating systems and modern control system to address critical issues in preparation for ITER and a fusion power plant. For the 2019-20 campaign its configurational flexibility has been enhanced with the installation of removable divertor gas baffles, its diagnostic capabilities with an extensive set of upgrades and its heating systems with new dual frequency gyrotrons. The gas baffles reduce coupling between the divertor and the main chamber and allow for detailed investigations on the role of fuelling in general and, together with upgraded boundary diagnostics, test divertor and edge models in particular. The increased heating capabilities broaden the operational regime to include Te/Ti ∼1 and have stimulated refocussing studies from L-mode to H-mode across a range of research topics. ITER baseline parameters were reached in type-I ELMy H-modes and alternative regimes with 'small' (or no) ELMs explored. Most prominently, negative triangularity was investigated in detail and confirmed as an attractive scenario with H-mode level core confinement but an L-mode edge. Emphasis was also placed on control, where an increased number of observers, actuators and control solutions became available and are now integrated into a generic control framework as will be needed in future devices. The quantity and quality of results of the 2019-20 TCV campaign are a testament to its successful integration within the European research effort alongside a vibrant domestic programme and international collaborations.

- Abstract
Using high-speed video cameras operating with framing rates of 20 and 50 kiloframes per second, we imaged the attachment process in a positive cloud-to-ground lightning involving connection of the negative upward connecting leader (N-UCL) to the lateral surface of the downward positive leader (DPL), occurring at a tall structure with a height of 530 m. The observations were performed at the Tall-Object Lightning Observatory in Guangzhou (TOLOG), China. A space stem/leader-like luminous segment formed within the common streamer zone (CSZ) between the N-UCL tip and DPL lateral surface was observed. The luminous segment shows a light feature in the middle and a dark feature at both ends. It is speculated that the space stem/leader developed in both directions and finally connected the N-UCL and the DPL. The connection behavior between the N-UCL tip and the DPL lateral surface is caused by the formation and development of the CSZ and the space stem/leader., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

- Abstract
The scattering of millimeter-wave beams from electron density fluctuations and the associated beam broadening are experimentally demonstrated. Using a dedicated setup, instantaneous deflection and (de-)focusing of the beam due to density blobs on the beam path are shown to agree with full-wave simulations. The detected time-averaged wave power transmitted through the turbulent plasma is reproduced by the radiative-transfer model implemented in the WKBeam code, which predicts a ∼50% turbulence-induced broadening of the beam cross-section. The role of core turbulence for the considered geometry is highlighted.

The beams of fast runaway electrons (RE), which are often produced during tokamak discharges, are particularly dangerous and can induce serious damages of the vacuum vessel and internal components of the machine. The proper and fast diagnostics of RE beams is essential for controlling the discharge, e.g., by early mitigation of disruptions and potentially dangerous RE beams. The diagnostics of RE beams is usually based on measurements of the radiation emitted either by these electrons, or as a result of their interactions with plasma and/or vessel walls. Such a radiation is usually recorded by the means of probes placed outside the vacuum vessel. The method developed by our team is based on the probe located inside the vacuum vessel. The probe can be used to detect highly localized RE bunches and to determine their spatial and temporal characteristics. During last few years, the NCBJ team have developed and used the RE diagnostics based on the Cherenkov effect observed in diamond radiators coupled with fast photomultipliers. During the investigated discharges, the probe was inserted into the vacuum vessel, and its head was placed at the plasma edge, where fast RE are expected. A correlation between signals recorded using our probes and other diagnostics, e.g., hard x-ray signals, was also studied. In this paper, we present recent results of the RE measurements by means of Cherenkov probes, which were performed in the COMPASS and TCV tokamaks.

General Physics and Astronomy - Abstract
Kinetic instabilities driven by runaway electrons (REs) have recently received attention in the fusion community as a means to control and diagnose REs in a tokamak. Experiments aimed at studying such kinetic instabilities have been performed at the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade (FTU), where different families of waves have been identified, from wide-band bursting emissions to quasi-monochromatic waves and sharp lines, in the presence of REs with energies from a few to tens of MeV. A specific family of waves with intense kinetic drive was directly observed for the first time, during both the early Ohmic plasma start-up and the current ramp-up. A clear wave frequency scaling with respect to the electron density was demonstrated. This scaling, with the complementary analysis of signals observed at different magnetic fields, allowed the identification of these instabilities as lower-hybrid waves. The relevant analysis shown in this Letter is based on a continuous intrashot detection of the RE-driven wave, which is reported for the first time for this kind of instability. We demonstrated that unstable waves are excited already at the very beginning of a tokamak discharge, opening the way to new possible research on the exploitation of this kind of measurement for monitoring seed REs formation at the early plasma stage, while most diagnostics still have limited capabilities. The conditions for plasma wave dispersion at the early phase of the FTU discharge are very similar to the ones expected during the ITER start-up, when analogous instabilities might, hence, come to light, in case of formation of suprathermal populations.

- Abstract
A large superconducting machine, JT-60SA has been constructed to provide major contributions to the ITER program and DEMO design. For the success of the ITER project and fusion reactor, understanding and development of plasma controllability in ITER and DEMO relevant higher beta regimes are essential. JT-60SA has focused the program on the plasma controllability for scenario development and risk mitigation in ITER as well as on investigating DEMO relevant regimes. This paper summarizes the high research priorities and strategy for the JT-60SA project. Recent works on simulation studies to prepare the plasma physics and control experiments are presented, such as plasma breakdown and equilibrium controls, hybrid and steady-state scenario development, and risk mitigation techniques. Contributions of JT-60SA to ITER and DEMO have been clarified through those studies.

Solvation thermodynamics is concerned with the evaluation and physical interpretation of solvation free energies. Endpoints DFT provides a framework for computing solvation free energies by combining molecular simulations with a version of the classical density functional theory of solutions which focuses on ω, the indirect (solvent-mediated) part of the solute-solvent potential of mean force (indirect PMF). The simulations are performed at the endpoints of a hypothetical charging process which transforms the solvent density from the pure liquid state to that of the solution state. The Endpoints DFT expression for solvation free energy can be shown to be equivalent to the standard expression for which the key quantity is the direct correlation function, but it has the advantage that the indirect term ω is more focused on the change in solvent-solvent correlations with respect to the pure liquid as the solute is inserted into the solution. In this perspective article, we review recent developments of Endpoints DFT, highlighting a series of papers we have written together beginning in 2017. We emphasize the importance of dimensionality reduction as the key to the evaluation of Endpoints DFT expressions, and present a recently developed, spatially resolved version of the theory. The role of interfacial water at certain positions which stabilize or destabilize a solute in solution can be analyzed with the spatially resolved version, and it is of considerable interest to investigate how changes in solvation affect protein-ligand binding and conformational landscapes from an Endpoints DFT perspective. Endpoints DFT can also be employed in materials science, an example involving the rational design strategy for polymer membrane separation is described. The Endpoints DFT method is a scheme to evaluate the solvation free energy by introducing approximations to integrate the classical density functional over a charging parameter. We have further proposed a new functional which captures the correct dependence of the indirect PMF ω at both endpoints of the charging process, and we review how it might be employed in future work.

- Abstract
A research activity in the Institute for Plasma Science and Technology of National Research Council (ISTP-CNR, Italy, former IFP-CNR) and in L.T. Calcoli (LTC, Italy) is aimed at the design and construction of calorimetric loads for absorption and measurement of high power millimeter-waves in the electron cyclotron frequency range. Recently, two CW 170 GHz loads, one for the European ITER gyrotron test facility and the other for the FALCON test- bed, have been installed at the Swiss Plasma Center (SPC, Switzerland). One short pulse (2 s) load for 1 MW, designed and optimised to operate at two different frequencies (84 GHz and 126 GHz), was provided for testing and conditioning two new dual-frequency gyrotrons for the Tokamak à Configuration Variable (TCV, Switzerland). Two additional CW loads, designed for absorbing powers higher than 1 MW, have been delivered to the National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology (QST, Japan) and exploited for the acceptance tests and the conditioning of the prototype of the Japanese ITER gyrotron. The present status and the most recent experimental results achieved in the framework of this development activity are reported in the paper.

- Abstract
The tokamak a configuration variable (TCV) continues to leverage its unique shaping capabilities, flexible heating systems and modern control system to address critical issues in preparation for ITER and a fusion power plant. The increased heating capabilities broaden the operational regime to include T (e)/T (i) similar to 1 and have stimulated refocussing studies from L-mode to H-mode across a range of research topics. ITER baseline parameters were reached in type-I ELMy H-modes and alternative regimes with `small' (or no) ELMs explored.
