Abstract

For certain measurements, the Corbino geometry has a distinct advantage over the Hall and van der Pauw geometries, in that it provides a direct probe of the bulk 2DEG without complications due to edge effects. This may be important in enabling detection of the non-Abelian entropy of the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state via bulk thermodynamic measurements. We report the successful fabrication and measurement of a Corbino-geometry sample in an ultra-high mobility GaAs heterostructure, with a focus on transport in the second and higher Landau levels. In particular, we report activation energy gaps of fractional quantum Hall states, with all edge effects ruled out, and extrapolate the conductivity prefactor from the Arrhenius fits. Our results show that activated transport in the second Landau level remains poorly understood. The development of this Corbino device opens the possibility to study the bulk of the 5/2 state using techniques not possible in other geometries.

Abstract

Despite notable scientific and medical advances, broader political, socioeconomic and behavioural factors continue to undercut the response to the COVID-19 pandemic1,2. Here we convened, as part of this Delphi study, a diverse, multidisciplinary panel of 386 academic, health, non-governmental organization, government and other experts in COVID-19 response from 112 countries and territories to recommend specific actions to end this persistent global threat to public health. The panel developed a set of 41 consensus statements and 57 recommendations to governments, health systems, industry and other key stakeholders across six domains: communication; health systems; vaccination; prevention; treatment and care; and inequities. In the wake of nearly three years of fragmented global and national responses, it is instructive to note that three of the highest-ranked recommendations call for the adoption of whole-of-society and whole-of-government approaches1, while maintaining proven prevention measures using a vaccines-plus approach2 that employs a range of public health and financial support measures to complement vaccination. Other recommendations with at least 99% combined agreement advise governments and other stakeholders to improve communication, rebuild public trust and engage communities3 in the management of pandemic responses. The findings of the study, which have been further endorsed by 184 organizations globally, include points of unanimous agreement, as well as six recommendations with >5% disagreement, that provide health and social policy actions to address inadequacies in the pandemic response and help to bring this public health threat to an end.

Abstract

Neuromorphic photonic processors based on resonator weight banks are an emerging candidate technology for enabling modern artificial intelligence (AI) in high speed analog systems. These purpose-built analog devices implement vector multiplications with the physics of resonator devices, offering efficiency, latency, and throughput advantages over equivalent electronic circuits. Along with these advantages, however, often come the difficult challenges of compensation for fabrication variations and environmental disturbances. In this paper, we review sources of variation and disturbances from our experiments, as well as mathematically define quantities that model them. Then, we introduce how the physics of resonators can be exploited to weight and sum multiwavelength signals. Finally, we outline automated design and control methodologies necessary to create practical, manufacturable, and high accuracy/precision resonator weight banks that can withstand operating conditions in the field. This represents a road map for unlocking the potential of resonator weight banks in practical deployment scenarios.

Abstract

Embryogenesis requires the timely and coordinated activation of developmental regulators. It has been suggested that the recently discovered class of histone demethylases (UTX and JMJD3) that specifically target the repressive H3K27me3 modification play an important role in the activation of "bivalent" genes in response to specific developmental cues. To determine the requirements for UTX in pluripotency and development, we have generated Utx-null ES cells and mutant mice. The loss of UTX had a profound effect during embryogenesis. Utx-null embryos had reduced somite counts, neural tube closure defects and heart malformation that presented between E9.5 and E13.5. Unexpectedly, homozygous mutant female embryos were more severely affected than hemizygous mutant male embryos. In fact, we observed the survival of a subset of UTX-deficient males that were smaller in size and had reduced lifespan. Interestingly, these animals were fertile with normal spermatogenesis. Consistent with a midgestation lethality, UTX-null male and female ES cells gave rise to all three germ layers in teratoma assays, though sex-specific differences could be observed in the activation of developmental regulators in embryoid body assays. Lastly, ChIP-seq analysis revealed an increase in H3K27me3 in Utx-null male ES cells. 42. The start-up of anaerobic sequencing batch reactors at 20 °C and 25 °C for the treatment of slaughterhouse wastewater

Abstract

The objective of this research was to evaluate the feasibility, the stability and the efficiency of a start-up at 20 °C and 25 °C of anaerobic sequencing batch reactors (ASBRs) treating slaughterhouse wastewater. Influent chemical oxygen demand (COD) and suspended solids concentrations averaged 7500 and 1700 mg dm-3, respectively. Reactor start-up was completed in 168 and 136 days at 20 °C, and 25 °C, respectively. The start-up process was stable at both temperatures, except for a short period at 20 °C, when effluent volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations increased from an average of 40 to 400 mg dm-3. Effluent quality varied throughout start-up, but in the last 25 days of the experiment, as the ASBRs were operated under organic loading rates of 2.25 ± 0.21 and 2.86 ± 0.24 kg m-3 d-1 at 20 °C and 25 °C, respectively, total COD was reduced by 90.3% ± 1.3%. Methanogenesis was not a limiting factor during start-up. At 20 °C, the limiting factor was the acidification of the soluble organics and, to a smaller extent, the reduction of propionic, isobutyric and isovaleric acids into lower VFAs. At 25 °C, the limiting factor was the hydrolysis of particulate organics. To minimize biomass loss during the start-up period, the organic loading rate should be increased only when 75 -80% of the COD fed has been transformed into methane within the design hydraulic retention time.

Abstract

The measured switched polarization properties of integrated Pb(Zr, Ti)O[sub 3] (PZT) capacitors arrays have been found to show a small dependence on individual capacitor size in the range from 0.17 and 100 µm². These thin (90 nm) PZT capacitors have low voltage switching properties with polarization saturation of < 1.8 V with switched polarization for the smallest capacitors (0.17 μm²) still larger than 25 µC/cm². The capacitor stack consisted of TiA1N hardmask/Ir/IrO[sub x]/PZT/Ir/TiAlN on either SiO[sub 2] dielectric or W plugs. The capacitor was patterned using 248 nm lithography and etched using only one mask. For wafers without W plugs, the Ir bottom electrode was not etched. For wafers with W plugs, the entire capacitor stack was etched and electrical connection to the bottom electrode was through the W plugs. The capacitors were integrated using SiO[sub 2] dielectrics and one level of Al metallization. These data suggest that high-density, ferroelectric capacitor-based memories may be feasible. Abstract

The most common mutation in human melanoma, BRAF(V600E), activates the serine/threonine kinase BRAF and causes excessive activity in the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway[subscript 1, 2]. BRAF(V600E) mutations are also present in benign melanocytic naevi3, highlighting the importance of additional genetic alterations in the genesis of malignant tumours. Such changes include recurrent copy number variations that result in the amplification of oncogenes[subscript 4, 5]. For certain amplifications, the large number of genes in the interval has precluded an understanding of the cooperating oncogenic events. Here we have used a zebrafish melanoma model to test genes in a recurrently amplified region of chromosome 1 for the ability to cooperate with BRAF(V600E) and accelerate melanoma. SETDB1, an enzyme that methylates histone H3 on lysine 9 (H3K9), was found to accelerate melanoma formation significantly in zebrafish. Chromatin immunoprecipitation coupled with massively parallel DNA sequencing and gene expression analyses uncovered genes, including HOX genes, that are transcriptionally dysregulated in response to increased levels of SETDB1. Our studies establish SETDB1 as an oncogene in melanoma and underscore the role of chromatin factors in regulating tumorigenesis.
