Search

While various indirect methods are used to detect exoplanets, one of the most effective and accurate methods is the transit method, which measures the brightness of a given star for periodic dips when an exoplanet is passing in front of the parent star. For systems with multiple transiting planets, the gravitational perturbations between planets affect their transit times. The difference in transit times allows a measurement of the planet masses and orbital eccentricities. These parameters help speculating on the formation, evolution, and stability of the system. Using transit timing variations (TTVs), we measure the masses and eccentricities of two planets orbiting K2-21, a relatively bright K7 dwarf star. These two planets exhibit measurable TTVs, have orbital periods of about 9.32 and 15.50 d, respectively, and a period ratio of about 1.66, which is relatively near to the 5:3 mean motion resonance. We report that the inner and outer planets in the K2-21 system have properties consistent with the presence of a hydrogen- and helium-dominated atmosphere, as we estimate their masses to be $1.59^{+0.52}_{-0.44}$ and $3.88^{+1.22}_{-1.07}\, \mathrm{ M}_\oplus$ and densities of $0.22^{+0.05}_{-0.04}$ and $0.34^{+0.08}_{-0.06}\, \rho _\oplus$, respectively (M⊕ and ρ⊕ are the mass and density of the Earth, respectively). Our results show that the inner planet is less dense than the outer planet; one more counterintuitive exoplanetary system such as Kepler-105, LTT 1445, TOI-175, and Kepler-279 systems.

All 4 giant planets in the Solar System host systems of multiple moons, whereas the terrestrial planets only host up to 2 moons. The Earth can capture small asteroids as temporary satellites, which begs the question as to how many moons could stably orbit the Earth, or an Earth-mass exoplanet. We perform a series of N-body simulations of closely-spaced equal mass moons in nested orbits around an Earth-mass planet orbiting a Sun-like star. The innermost moon begins near the host planets Roche radius, and the system is packed until the outermost moon begins near the stability limit for single moons. The initial spacing of the moons follows an iterative scheme commonly used for studies of compact planetary systems around single stars. For 3-moons system, we generate MEGNO maps to calculate periodic and chaotic regions and to identify the destabilizing MMRs. Our calculations show that the maximum number of moons depends on the assumed masses of the satellites (Ceres-, Pluto-, and Luna-mass) that could maintain stable orbits in a tightly-packed environment. Through our N-body simulations, we find stable configurations for up to 7 $\pm$ 1 Ceres-mass, 4 $\pm$ 1 Pluto-mass, and 3 $\pm$ 1 Luna-mass moons. However, outward tidal migration will likely play a substantial role in the number of moons on stable orbits over the 10 Gyr stellar lifetime of a Sun-like star., Comment: Published at MNRAS

With hydrodynamical simulations we examine the evolution of a protoplanetary disc around $\alpha$ Centauri B including the effect of the eccentric orbit binary companion $\alpha$ Centauri A. The initially circular orbit disc undergoes two types of eccentricity growth. First, the eccentricity oscillates on the orbital period of the binary, $P_{\rm orb}$, due to the eccentricity of the binary orbit. Secondly, for a sufficiently small disc aspect ratio, the disc undergoes global forced eccentricity oscillations on a time-scale of around $20\,P_{\rm orb}$. These oscillations damp out through viscous dissipation leaving a quasi-steady eccentricity profile for the disc that oscillates only on the binary orbital period. The time-averaged global eccentricity is in the range 0.05-0.1, with no precession in the steady state. The periastrons of the gas particles are aligned to one another. The higher the disc viscosity, the higher the disc eccentricity. With $N$-body simulations we examine the evolution of a disc of planetesimals that forms with the orbital properties of the quasi-steady protoplanetary disc. We find that the average magnitude of the eccentricity of particles increases and their periastrons become misaligned to each other once they decouple from the gas disc. The low planetesimal collision velocity required for planet formation suggests that for planet formation to have occurred in a disc of planetesimals formed from a protoplanetary disc around $\alpha$ Centauri B, said disc's viscosity must be have been small and planet formation must have occurred at orbital radii smaller than about $2.5\,\rm au$. An Earth-analog orbiting within the habitable zone of $\alpha$ Centauri B was shown to undergo large variations in its obliquity, or axial tilt, which affects the planetary climate by altering the radiative flux for a given latitude. We examine the potential implications of these obliquity variations for climate through Milankovitch cycles using an energy balance model with ice sheets. Similar to previous studies, the largest amplitude obliquity variations from spin-orbit resonances induce snowball states within the habitable zone, while moderate variations can allow for persistent ice caps or an ice belt. Particular outcomes for the global ice distribution can depend on the planetary orbit, obliquity, spin precession, binary orbit, and which star the Earth-analog orbits. An Earth-analog with an inclined orbits relative to the binary orbit can periodically transition through several global ice distribution states and risk runaway glaciation when periods of ice caps and an ice belt overlap. We re-evaluate the outer edge of orbital stability for possible exomoons orbiting the radial velocity planet discovered in the HD 23079 system. In this system, a solar-type star hosts a Jupiter-mass planet in a nearly circular orbit in the outer stellar habitable zone. The outer stability limit of exomoons is deduced using $N$-body and tidal migration simulations considering a large range of initial conditions, encompassing both prograde and retrograde orbits. In particular, we extend previous works by evaluating many values in the satellite mean anomaly to identify and exclude regions of quasi-stability. Future observations of this system can make use of our results through a scale factor relative to the currently measured minimum mass. Using a constant time lag tidal model (Hut 1981), we find that plausible tidal interactions within the system are insufficient to induce significant outward migration toward the theoretical stability limit. The presence of a stellar companion can place constraints on occurrence and orbital evolution of satellites orbiting exoplanets, i.e., exomoons. In this work we revise earlier orbital stability limits for retrograde orbits in the case of a three body system consisting of star-planet-satellite. The latter reads $a_{\rm sat}^{\rm crit} \approx 0.668(1-1.236e_{\rm p})$ for $e_p \leq 0.8$ in units of the Hill Radius and represents the lower critical orbit as a function of the planetary eccentricity $e_{\rm p}$. A similar formula is determined for exomoons hosted by planets in binary star systems, where $e_{\rm p}$ is replaced with the components of free and forced eccentricity from secular orbit evolution theory. By exploring the dynamics of putative exomoons in $\alpha$ Centauri AB we find that the outer stability limit can be much less than half the Hill Radius due to oscillations in the planetary orbital eccentricity caused by the gravitational interaction with the binary star. We show, furthermore, how the resulting truncation of the outer stability limit can affect the outward tidal migration and potential observability of exomoons through transit timing variations (TTVs). Typical TTV (RMS) amplitudes induced by exomoons in binary systems are $\lesssim$10 min and appear more likely for planets orbiting the less massive stellar component. Warm Jupiters -- defined here as planets larger than 6 Earth radii with orbital periods of 8--200 days -- are a key missing piece in our understanding of how planetary systems form and evolve. It is currently debated whether Warm Jupiters form in situ, undergo disk or high eccentricity tidal migration, or have a mixture of origin channels. These different classes of origin channels lead to different expectations for Warm Jupiters' properties, which are currently difficult to evaluate due to the small sample size. We take advantage of the \TESS survey and systematically search for Warm Jupiter candidates around main-sequence host stars brighter than the \TESS-band magnitude of 12 in the Full-Frame Images in Year 1 of the \TESS Prime Mission data. We introduce a catalog of 55 Warm Jupiter candidates, including 19 candidates that were not originally released as \TESS Objects of Interest (TOIs) by the \TESS team. We fit their \TESS light curves, characterize their eccentricities and transit-timing variations (TTVs), and prioritize a list for ground-based follow-up and \TESS Extended Mission observations. Using hierarchical Bayesian modeling, we find the preliminary eccentricity distributions of our Warm-Jupiter-candidate catalog using a Beta distribution, a Rayleigh distribution, and a two-component Gaussian distribution as the functional forms of the eccentricity distribution. We report the first discovery of a transiting circumbinary planet detected from a single sector of TESS data. During Sector 21, the planet TIC 172900988b transited the primary star and then 5 days later it transited the secondary star. The binary is itself eclipsing, with a period of P = 19.7 days and an eccentricity of e = 0.45. Archival data from ASAS-SN, Evryscope, KELT, and SuperWASP reveal a prominent apsidal motion of the binary orbit, caused by the dynamical interactions between the binary and the planet. A comprehensive photodynamical analysis of the TESS, archival and follow-up data yields stellar masses and radii of M1 = 1.2384 +/- 0.0007 MSun and R1 = 1.3827 +/- 0.0016 RSun for the primary and M2 = 1.2019 +/- 0.0007 MSun and R2 = 1.3124 +/- 0.0012 RSun for the secondary. The radius of the planet is R3 = 11.25 +/- 0.44 REarth (1.004 +/- 0.039 RJup). The planet's mass and orbital properties are not uniquely determined - there are six solutions with nearly equal likelihood. Specifically, we find that the planet's mass is in the range of 824 < M3 < 981 MEarth (2.65 < M3 < 3.09 MJup), its orbital period could be 188.8, 190.4, 194.0, 199.0, 200.4, or 204.1 days, and the eccentricity is between 0.02 and 0.09. We present results of a study on identifying circumbinary planet candidates that produce multiple transits during one conjunction with eclipsing binary systems. The occurrence of these transits enables us to estimate the candidates' orbital periods, which is crucial as the periods of the currently known transiting circumbinary planets are significantly longer than the typical observational baseline of TESS. Combined with the derived radii, it also provides valuable information needed for follow-up observations and subsequent confirmation of a large number of circumbinary planet candidates from TESS. Motivated by the discovery of the 1108-day circumbinary planet Kepler-1647, we show the application of this technique to four of Kepler's circumbinary planets that produce such transits. We report the detection of the first circumbinary planet found by TESS. The target, a known eclipsing binary, was observed in sectors 1 through 12 at 30-minute cadence and in sectors 4 through 12 at two-minute cadence. It consists of two stars with masses of 1.1 MSun and 0.3 MSun on a slightly eccentric (0.16), 14.6-day orbit, producing prominent primary eclipses and shallow secondary eclipses. The planet has a radius of ~6.9 REarth and was observed to make three transits across the primary star of roughly equal depths (~0.2%) but different durations -- a common signature of transiting circumbinary planets. Its orbit is nearly circular (e ~ 0.09) with an orbital period of 95.2 days. The orbital planes of the binary and the planet are aligned to within ~1 degree. To obtain a complete solution for the system, we combined the TESS photometry with existing ground-based radial-velocity observations in a numerical photometric-dynamical model. The system demonstrates the discovery potential of TESS for circumbinary planets, and provides further understanding of the formation and evolution of planets orbiting close binary stars., Comment: 35 pages, 21 figures, 6 tables

International audience; α Centauri A is the closest solar-type star to the Sun and offers an excellent opportunity to detect the thermal emission of a mature planet heated by its host star. The MIRI coronagraph on the James Webb Space Telescope can search the 1-3 au (1″-2″) region around α Cen A which is predicted to be stable within the α Cen AB system. We demonstrate that with reasonable performance of the telescope and instrument, a 20 hr program combining on-target and reference star observations at 15.5 μm could detect thermal emission from planets as small as ˜5 R ⊕. Multiple visits every 3-6 months would increase the geometrical completeness, provide astrometric confirmation of detected sources, and push the radius limit down to ˜3 R ⊕. An exozodiacal cloud only a few times brighter than our own should also be detectable, although a sufficiently bright cloud might obscure any planet present in the system. While current precision radial velocity (PRV) observations set a limit of 50-100 M ⊕ at 1-3 au for planets orbiting α Cen A, there is a broad range of exoplanet radii up to 10 R ⊕ consistent with these mass limits. A carefully planned observing sequence along with state-of-the-art post-processing analysis could reject the light from α Cen A at the level of ˜10-5 at 1″-2″ and minimize the influence of α Cen B located 7″-8″ away in the 2022-2023 timeframe. These space-based observations would complement on-going imaging experiments at shorter wavelengths as well as PRV and astrometric experiments to detect planets dynamically. Planetary demographics suggest that the likelihood of directly imaging a planet whose mass and orbit are consistent with present PRV limits is small, ˜5%, and possibly lower if the presence of a binary companion further reduces occurrence rates. However, at a distance of just 1.34 pc, α Cen A is our closest sibling star and certainly merits close scrutiny.

Planets that orbit only one of the stars in stellar binary systems (i.e., circumstellar) are dynamically constrained to a limited range of orbital parameters and thus understanding conditions on their stability is of great importance in exoplanet searches. We perform $\sim$700 million N-body simulations to identify how stability regions depend on properties of the binary, as well as, the starting planetary inclination and mean longitude relative to the binary orbit. Moreover, we provide grid interpolation maps and lookup tables for the community to use our results. Through Monte-Carlo methods we determine that planets with a semimajor axis $a_p$ $\lesssim$8\% of the binary semimajor axis $a_{bin}$ will likely be stable given the known distribution of binary star parameters. This estimate varies in the Lidov-Kozai regime or for retrograde orbits to 4\% or 10\% of $a_{bin}$, respectively. We introduce our new code, SMERCURY-T, which is based on existing codes SMERCURY and Mercury-T. The result is a mixed-variable symplectic N-body integrator that can compute the orbital and spin evolution of a planet within a multiplanet system under the influence of tidal spin torques from its star. We validate our implementation by comparing our experimental results to that of a secular model. As we demonstrate in a series of experiments, SMERCURY-T allows for the study of secular spin–orbit resonance crossings and captures for planets within complex multiplanet systems. These processes can drive a planet’s spin state to evolve along vastly different pathways on its road toward tidal equilibrium, as tidal spin torques dampen the planet’s spin rate and evolve its obliquity. Additionally, we show the results of a scenario that exemplifies the crossing of a chaotic region that exists as the overlap of two spin–orbit resonances. The test planet experiences violent and chaotic swings in its obliquity until its eventual escape from resonance as it tidally evolves. All of these processes are and have been important over the obliquity evolution of many bodies within the solar system and beyond and have implications for planetary climate and habitability. SMERCURY-T is a powerful and versatile tool that allows for further study of these phenomena.

Modern studies of the early solar system routinely invoke the possibility of an orbital instability among the giant planets triggered by gravitational interactions between the planets and a massive exterior disk of planetesimals. Previous works have suggested that this instability can be substantially delayed ($\sim$100s Myr) after the formation of the giant planets. Bodies in the disk are typically treated in a semi-active manner, wherein their gravitational force on the planets is included, but interactions between the planetesimals are ignored. We perform $N$-body numerical simulations using GENGA, which makes use of GPUs to allow for the inclusion of all gravitational interactions between bodies. Although our simulated Kuiper belt particles are more massive than the probable masses of real primordial Kuiper belt objects, our simulations indicate that the self-stirring of the primordial Kuiper belt is very important to the dynamics of the giant planet instability. We find that interactions between planetesimals dynamically heat the disk and typically prevent the outer solar system instability from being delayed by more than a few tens of million years after giant planet formation. Longer delays occur in a small fraction of systems that have at least 3.5 AU gaps between the planets and planetesimal disk. Our final planetary configurations match the solar system at a rate consistent with other previous works in most regards. Of the nine confirmed transiting circumbinary planet systems, only Kepler-47 is known to contain more than one planet. Kepler-47 b (the "inner planet") has an orbital period of 49.5 days and a radius of about $3\,R_{\oplus}$. Kepler-47 c (the "outer planet") has an orbital period of 303.2 days and a radius of about $4.7\,R_{\oplus}$. Here we report the discovery of a third planet, Kepler-47 d (the "middle planet"), which has an orbital period of 187.4 days and a radius of about $7\,R_{\oplus}$. The presence of the middle planet allows us to place much better constraints on the masses of all three planets, where the $1\sigma$ ranges are less than $26\,M_{\oplus}$, between $7-43\,M_{\oplus}$, and between $2-5\,M_{\oplus}$ for the inner, middle, and outer planets, respectively. The middle and outer planets have low bulk densities, with $\rho_{\rm middle} < 0.68$ g cm$^{-3}$ and $\rho_{\rm outer} < 0.26$ g cm$^{-3}$ at the $1\sigma$ level. The two outer planets are "tightly packed," assuming the nominal masses, meaning no other planet could stably orbit between them. All of the orbits have low eccentricities and are nearly coplanar, disfavoring violent scattering scenarios and suggesting gentle migration in the protoplanetary disk., Comment: 68 pages, 30 figures

Kepler-1647b is the most recently discovered planet that transits two stars, i.e., a circumbinary planet (CBP). Due to its large orbital separation, Kepler-1647b stands out from the rest of the Kepler CBPs, which mostly reside on much tighter orbits near the stability limit. The large separation of Kepler-1647b challenges inward disk migration as a dominant formation pathway, suggested by the other Kepler CBPs. In this paper, we consider the possibility of an undetected planet near the stability limit by examining observational consequences of such a planet. We calculate the transit probability of the putative planet, transit timing variations (TTVs) of the known planet, and eclipsing timing variations (ETVs) of the host binary caused by the putative planet. We find the presence of a $\gtrsim$30M$_{\oplus}$ inner planet to be highly unlikely near the stability limit. Satellites of extrasolar planets, or exomoons, are on the frontier of detectability using current technologies and theoretical constraints should be considered in their search. In this Letter, we apply theoretical constraints of orbital stability and tidal migration to the six candidate KOI systems proposed by Fox & Wigert (2020) to identify whether these systems can potentially host exomoons. The host planets orbit close to their respective stars and the orbital stability extent of exomoons is limited to only $\sim$40% of the host planet's Hill radius ($\sim$20 R$_{\rm p}$). Using plausible tidal parameters from the solar system, we find that four out of six systems would either tidally disrupt their exomoons or lose them to outward migration within the system lifetimes. The remaining two systems (KOI 268.01 and KOI 1888.01) could host exomoons that are within 25 R$_{\rm p}$ and less than $\sim$3% of the host planet's mass. However, a recent independent transit timing analysis by Kipping (2020) found that these systems fail rigorous statistical tests to validate them as candidates. Overall, we find the presence of exomoons in these systems that are large enough for TTV signatures to be unlikely given the combined constraints of observational modeling, tidal migration, and orbital stability. The primary Kepler Mission provided nearly continuous monitoring of ~200,000 objects with unprecedented photometric precision. We present the final catalog of eclipsing binary systems within the 105 square degree Kepler field of view. This release incorporates the full extent of the data from the primary mission (Q0-Q17 Data Release). As a result, new systems have been added, additional false positives have been removed, ephemerides and principal parameters have been recomputed, classifications have been revised to rely on analytical models, and eclipse timing variations have been computed for each system. We identify several classes of systems including those that exhibit tertiary eclipse events, systems that show clear evidence of additional bodies, heartbeat systems, systems with changing eclipse depths, and systems exhibiting only one eclipse event over the duration of the mission. We have updated the period and galactic latitude distribution diagrams and included a catalog completeness evaluation. The total number of identified eclipsing and ellipsoidal binary systems in the Kepler field of view has increased to 2878, 1.3% of all observed Kepler targets. An intriguing question in the context of dynamics arises: Could a moon possess a moon itself? Such a configuration does not exist in the Solar System, although this may be possible in theory. Kollmeier et al. (2019) determined the critical size of a satellite necessary to host a long-lived sub-satellite, or submoon. However, the orbital constraints for these submoons to exist are still undetermined. Domingos et al. (2006) indicated that moons are stable out to a fraction of the host planet Hill radius $R_{H,p}$, which in turn depends on the eccentricity of its host's orbit. Motivated by this, we simulate a system of exomoons and submoons for $10^5$ planetary orbits, while considering many initial orbital phases to obtain the critical semimajor axis in terms of $R_{H,p}$ or the hosts satellite's Hill radius $R_{H,sat}$, respectively. We find that, assuming circular coplanar orbits, the stability limit for exomoons is 0.40 $R_{H,p}$ and for a submoon is 0.33 $R_{H,sat}$. Additionally, we discuss the observational feasibility of detecting these sub-satellites through photometric, radial velocity, or direct imaging observations using the Neptunes-sized exomoon candidates Kepler 1625b-I (Teachey et al. 2018) and identify how stability can shape the identification of future candidates., Accepted to AJ. 15 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

Previous studies have shown that planets that rotate retrograde (backward with respect to their orbital motion) generally experience less severe obliquity variations than those that rotate prograde (the same direction as their orbital motion). Here, we examine retrograde-rotating planets on eccentric orbits and find a previously unknown secular spin–orbit resonance that can drive significant obliquity variations. This resonance occurs when the frequency of the planet’s rotation axis precession becomes commensurate with an orbital eigenfrequency of the planetary system. The planet’s eccentricity enables a participating orbital frequency through an interaction in which the apsidal precession of the planet’s orbit causes a cyclic nutation of the planet’s orbital angular momentum vector. The resulting orbital frequency follows the relationship , where and are the rates of the planet’s changing longitude of periapsis and longitude of ascending node, respectively. We test this mechanism by simulating cases of a simple Earth–Jupiter system and confirm the predicted resonance. Over the course of 100 Myr, the test Earths with rotation axis precession rates near the predicted resonant frequency experienced pronounced obliquity variations of the order of 10°–30°. These variations can be significant and suggest that while retrograde rotation is a stabilizing influence most of the time, retrograde rotators can experience large obliquity variations if they are on eccentric orbits and enter this spin–orbit resonance.

We report the discovery of a Neptune-size (R_p = 3.87 +/- 0.06 R_Earth) transiting circumbinary planet, Kepler-1661 b, found in the Kepler photometry. The planet has a period of ~175 days and its orbit precesses with a period of only 35 years. The precession causes the alignment of the orbital planes to vary, and the planet is in a transiting configuration only ~7% of the time as seen from Earth. As with several other Kepler circumbinary planets, Kepler-1661 b orbits close to the stability radius, and is near the (hot) edge of habitable zone. The planet orbits a single-lined, grazing eclipsing binary, containing a 0.84 M_Sun and 0.26 M_Sun pair of stars in a mildly eccentric (e=0.11), 28.2-day orbit. The system is fairly young, with an estimated age of ~1-3 Gyrs, and exhibits significant starspot modulations. The grazing-eclipse configuration means the system is very sensitive to changes in the binary inclination, which manifests itself as a change in the eclipse depth. The starspots contaminate the eclipse photometry, but not in the usual way of inducing spurious eclipse timing variations. Rather, the starspots alter the normalization of the light curve, and hence the eclipse depths. This can lead to spurious eclipse depth variations, which are then incorrectly ascribed to binary orbital precession., 37 pages, 15 figures

Changes in planetary obliquity, or axial tilt, influence the climates on Earth-like planets. In the solar system, the Earth's obliquity is stabilized due to interactions with our moon and the resulting {small amplitude variations ($\sim$2.4\degree)} are beneficial for advanced life. Most Sun-like stars have at least one stellar companion and the habitability of circumstellar exoplanets is shaped by their stellar companion. We show that a stellar companion can dramatically change whether {Earth-like obliquity stability is} possible through planetary orbital precession relative to the binary orbit or resonant pumping of the obliquity through spin-orbit interactions. We present a new formalism for the planetary spin precession that accounts for orbital misalignments between the planet and binary. Using numerical modeling in $\alpha$ Centauri AB we show: a stark contrast between the planetary obliquity variations depending on the host star, planetary neighbors limit the possible spin states for {Earth-like obliquity stability}, and the presence of a moon can destabilize the obliquity, defying our Earth-based expectations. An Earth-like rotator orbiting the primary star would experience {small} obliquity variations for 87\%, 74\%, or 54\% of Solar type binaries, depending on the mass of the primary (0.8, 1.0, or 1.2 M$_\odot$, respectively). The stability limit for circumbinary planets (CBPs) is not well defined and can depend on initial parameters defining either the planetary orbit or the inner binary orbit. We expand on the work of Holman & Wiegert (1999, AJ 117, 621) to develop numerical tools for quick, easy, and accurate determination of the stability limit. The results of our simulations, as well as our numerical tools, are available to the community through $\texttt{Zenodo}$ and $\texttt{GitHub}$, respectively. We employ a grid interpolation method based on $\sim$150 million full N-body simulations of initially circular, coplanar systems and compare to the 9 known Kepler CBP systems. Using a formalism from planet packing studies, we find that 55% of the Kepler CBP systems allow for an additional equal-mass planet to potentially exist on an interior orbit relative to the observed planet. Therefore, we do $\textit{not}$ find strong evidence for a pile-up in the Kepler CBP systems and more detections are needed to adequately characterize the formation mechanisms for the CBP population. We present integrations of a model Solar System with five terrestrial planets (beginning ~30-50 Myr after the formation of primitive Solar System bodies) in order to determine the preferred regions of parameter space leading to a giant impact that resulted in the formation of the Moon. Our results indicate which choices of semimajor axes and eccentricities for Theia (the proto-Moon) at this epoch can produce a late Giant Impact, assuming that Mercury, Venus, and Mars are near the current orbits. We find that the likely semimajor axis of Theia, at the epoch when our simulations begin, depends on the assumed mass ratio of Earth-Moon progenitors (8/1, 4/1, or 1/1). The low eccentricities of the terrestrial planets are most commonly produced when the progenitors have similar semimajor axes at the epoch when our integrations commence. Additionally, we show that mean motion resonances among the terrestrial planets and perturbations from the giant planets can affect the dynamical evolution of the system leading to a late Giant Impact., Comment: 17 pages, Accepted for publication in Icarus

A brief description of the four-body problem and the N-body problems is given. Main differences and similarities between each one of these problems and the three-body problem are presented and discussed, with the purpose of preparing the readers for situations that may require to go beyond the three-body problem.

The quest for Earth-like planets represents a major focus of current exoplanet research. While planets that are Earth-sized and smaller have been detected, these planets reside in orbits that are too close to their host star to allow liquid water on their surface. We present the detection of Kepler-186f, a 1.11+\-0.14 Earth radius planet that is the outermost of five planets - all roughly Earth-sized - that transit a 0.47+\-0.05 Rsun star. The intensity and spectrum of the star's radiation places Kepler-186f in the stellar habitable zone, implying that if Kepler-186f has an Earth-like atmosphere and H2O at its surface, then some of this H2O is likely to be in liquid form., Comment: Main text and supplemental material combined. Over 2500 eclipsing binaries were identified and characterized from the ultra-precise photometric data provided by the Kepler space telescope. Kepler is now beginning its second mission, K2, which is proving to again provide ultra-precise photometry for a large sample of eclipsing binary stars. In the 1951 light curves covering 12 days in the K2 engineering data-set, we have identified and determined the ephemerides for 31 eclipsing binaries that demonstrate the capabilities for eclipsing binary science in the upcoming campaigns in K2. Of those, 20 are new discoveries. We describe both manual and automated approaches to harvesting the complete set of eclipsing binaries in the K2 data, provide identifications and details for the full set of eclipsing binaries present in the engineering data-set, and discuss the prospects for application of eclipsing binary searches in the K2 mission., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, submitted to PASP

Venus currently rotates slowly, with its spin controlled by solid-body and atmospheric thermal tides. However, conditions may have been far different 4 billion years ago, when the Sun was fainter and most of the carbon within Venus could have been in solid form, implying a low-mass atmosphere. We investigate how the obliquity would have varied for a hypothetical rapidly rotating Early Venus. The obliquity variation structure of an ensemble of hypothetical Early Venuses is simpler than that Earth would have if it lacked its large Moon (Lissauer et al., 2012), having just one primary chaotic regime at high prograde obliquities. We note an unexpected long-term variability of up to $\pm7^\circ$ for retrograde Venuses. Low-obliquity Venuses show very low total obliquity variability over billion-year timescales -- comparable to that of the real Moon-influenced Earth., Comment: in revision at _Astrobiology_

Our aim is to identify and classify mean-motion resonances (MMRs) for the coplanar circular restricted three-body problem (CR3BP) for mass ratios between 0.10 and 0.50. Our methods include the maximum Lyapunov exponent, which is used as an indicator for the location of the resonances, the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) used for determining what kind of resonances are present, and the inspection of the orbital elements to classify the periodicity. We show that the 2:1 resonance occurs the most frequently. Among other resonances, the 3:1 resonance is the second most common, and furthermore both 3:2 and 5:3 resonances occur more often than the 4:1 resonance. Moreover, the resonances in the coplanar CR3BP are classified based on the behaviour of the orbits. We show that orbital stability is ensured for high values of resonance (i.e., high ratios) where only a single resonance is present. The resonances attained are consistent with the previously established resonances for the solar system, i.e., specifically, in regards to the asteroid belt. Previous work employed digital filtering and Lyapunov characteristic exponents to determine stochasticity of the eccentricity, which is found to be consistent with our usage of Lyapunov exponents as an alternate approach based on varying the mass ratio instead of the eccentricity. We provide a detailed theoretical study aimed at the observational finding about the ν Octantis binary system that indicates the possible existence of a Jupiter-type planet in this system. If a prograde planetary orbit is assumed, it has earlier been argued that the planet, if existing, should be located outside the zone of orbital stability. However, a previous study by Eberle & Cuntz concludes that the planet is most likely stable if assumed to be in a retrograde orbit with respect to the secondary system component. In the present work, we significantly augment this study by taking into account the observationally deduced uncertainty ranges of the orbital parameters for the stellar components and the suggested planet. Furthermore, our study employs additional mathematical methods, which include monitoring the Jacobi constant, the zero velocity function and the maximum Lyapunov exponent. We again find that the suggested planet is indeed possible if assumed to be in a retrograde orbit, but it is virtually impossible if assumed in a prograde orbit. Its existence is found to be consistent with the deduced system parameters of the binary components and of the suggested planet, including the associated uncertainty bars given by observations.

We perform long-term simulations, up to ten billion years, of closely-spaced configurations of 2 -- 6 planets, each as massive as the Earth, traveling on nested orbits about either stellar component in $\alpha$ Centauri AB. The innermost planet initially orbits at either the inner edge of its star's empirical habitable zone (HZ) or the inner edge of its star's conservative HZ. Although individual planets on low inclination, low eccentricity, orbits can survive throughout the habitable zones of both stars, perturbations from the companion star require that the minimum spacing of planets in multi-planet systems within the habitable zones of each star must be significantly larger than the spacing of similar multi-planet systems orbiting single stars in order to be long-lived. The binary companion induces a forced eccentricity upon the orbits of planets in orbit around either star. Planets on appropriately-phased circumstellar orbits with initial eccentricities equal to their forced eccentricities can survive on more closely spaced orbits than those with initially circular orbits, although the required spacing remains higher than for planets orbiting single stars. A total of up to nine planets on nested prograde orbits can survive for the current age of the system within the empirical HZs of the two stars, with five of these orbiting $\alpha$ Centauri B and four orbiting $\alpha$ Centauri A., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables; accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal

We present the discovery of KIC 9632895b, a 6.2 Earth-radius planet in a low-eccentricity, 240.5-day orbit about an eclipsing binary. The binary itself consists of a 0.93 and 0.194 solar mass pair of stars with an orbital period of 27.3 days. The plane of the planet's orbit is rapidly precessing, and its inclination only becomes sufficiently aligned with the primary star in the latter portion of the Kepler data. Thus three transits are present in the latter half of the light curve, but none of the three conjunctions that occurred during the first half of the light curve produced transits. The precession period is ~103 years, and during that cycle, transits are visible only ~8% of the time. This has the important implication that for every system like KIC 9632895 that we detect, there are ~12 circumbinary systems that exist but are not currently exhibiting transits. The planet's mass is too small to noticeably perturb the binary, consequently its mass is not measurable with these data; but our photodynamical model places a 1-sigma upper limit of 16 Earth masses. With a period 8.8 times that of the binary, the planet is well outside the dynamical instability zone. It does, however, lie within the habitable zone of the binary, and making it the third of ten Kepler circumbinary planets to do so.

\We present the sixth catalog of Kepler candidate planets based on nearly 4 years of high precision photometry. This catalog builds on the legacy of previous catalogs released by the Kepler project and includes 1493 new Kepler Objects of Interest (KOIs) of which 554 are planet candidates, and 131 of these candidates have best fit radii 50 days to provide a consistently vetted sample that can be used to improve planet occurrence rate calculations. We discuss the performance of our planet detection algorithms, and the consistency of our vetting products. The Kepler mission discovered 2842 exoplanet candidates with 2 years of data. We provide updates to the Kepler planet candidate sample based upon 3 years (Q1-Q12) of data. Through a series of tests to exclude false-positives, primarily caused by eclipsing binary stars and instrumental systematics, 855 additional planetary candidates have been discovered, bringing the total number known to 3697. We provide revised transit parameters and accompanying posterior distributions based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm for the cumulative catalogue of Kepler Objects of Interest. There are now 130 candidates in the cumulative catalogue that receive less than twice the flux the Earth receives and more than 1100 have a radius less than 1.5 Rearth. There are now a dozen candidates meeting both criteria, roughly doubling the number of candidate Earth analogs. A majority of planetary candidates have a high probability of being bonafide planets, however, there are populations of likely false-positives. We discuss and suggest additional cuts that can be easily applied to the catalogue to produce a set of planetary candidates with good fidelity. We report the discovery of a new Kepler transiting circumbinary planet (CBP). This latest addition to the still-small family of CBPs defies the current trend of known short-period planets orbiting near the stability limit of binary stars. Unlike the previous discoveries, the planet revolving around the eclipsing binary system Kepler-1647 has a very long orbital period (~1100 days) and was at conjunction only twice during the Kepler mission lifetime. Due to the singular configuration of the system, Kepler-1647b is not only the longest-period transiting CBP at the time of writing, but also one of the longest-period transiting planets. With a radius of 1.06+/-0.01 RJup it is also the largest CBP to date. The planet produced three transits in the light-curve of Kepler-1647 (one of them during an eclipse, creating a syzygy) and measurably perturbed the times of the stellar eclipses, allowing us to measure its mass to be 1.52+/-0.65 MJup. The planet revolves around an 11-day period eclipsing binary consisting of two Solar-mass stars on a slightly inclined, mildly eccentric (e_bin = 0.16), spin-synchronized orbit. Despite having an orbital period three times longer than Earth's, Kepler-1647b is in the conservative habitable zone of the binary star throughout its orbit., Comment: 61 pages, 21 figures
