Abstract

The rapid advancement of Large Language Models (LLMs) has sparked intense debate regarding the prevalence of bias in these models and its mitigation. Yet, as exemplified by both results on debiasing methods in the literature and reports of alignment-related defects from the wider community, bias remains a poorly understood topic despite its practical relevance. To enhance the understanding of the internal causes of bias, we analyse LLM bias through the lens of causal fairness analysis, which enables us to both comprehend the origins of bias and reason about its downstream consequences and mitigation. To operationalize this framework, we propose a prompt-based method for the extraction of confounding and mediating attributes which contribute to the LLM decision process. By applying Activity Dependency Networks (ADNs), we then analyse how these attributes influence an LLM's decision process. We apply our method to LLM ratings of argument quality in political debates. We find that the observed disparate treatment can at least in part be attributed to confounding and mitigating attributes and model misalignment, and discuss the consequences of our findings for human-AI alignment and bias mitigation. Abstract

Objective Telemedicine is becoming an increasingly feasible option for patients with chronic diseases due to its convenience, cost-effectiveness and ease of access. While there are certain limitations, the benefits can be appreciated by those seeking repetitive care. The perception of telemedicine as an alternative to recurrent, in-person appointments for patients with obesity in structured bariatric programmes is still unclear. This content analysis’ primary endpoint was to explore how patients within our bariatric programme perceived telemedicine and virtual consultations as a new way of communication during COVID-19.Design A qualitative study using semistructured interviews and qualitative content analysis method by Elo and Kyngäs following four steps: data familiarisation, coding and categorising with Quirkos software and final interpretation guided by developed categories.Setting University Hospital, Switzerland.Participants We conducted 33 interviews with 19 patients from a structured bariatric programme.Results Most patients shared positive experiences, acknowledging the convenience and accessibility of virtual appointments. Others voiced concerns, especially regarding telemedicine’s limitations. These reservations centred around the lack of physical examinations, difficulties in fostering connections with healthcare providers, as well as barriers stemming from language and technology. The research identified a spectrum of patient preferences in relation to telemedicine versus in-person visits, shaped by the immediacy of their concerns and their availability.Conclusion While telemedicine is increasingly accepted by the public and provides accessible and cost-effective options for routine follow-up appointments, there are still obstacles to overcome, such as a lack of physical examination and technological limitations. However, integrating virtual alternatives, like phone or video consultations, into routine bariatric follow-ups could improve continuity and revolutionise bariatric care.

Abstract

Abstract Provision of atomic hydrogen by hydrogen dissociation catalysts only moderately accelerates the hydrogenation rate of magnesium. They shed light on this well‐known but technically challenging fact through a combined approach using an unconventional surface science technique together with Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The calculations demonstrate the drastic electronic structure changes during transformation of Mg to MgH2, which make fractional hydrogen coverage on the surface, as well as substoichiometric hydrogen content in the bulk energetically unfavorable. Reflecting Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (REELS) is used to measure the surface and bulk plasmon during hydrogen sorption in magnesium. The measurements show that the hydrogenation proceeds via the growth of magnesium hydride without the presence of chemisorbed hydrogen on the metallic magnesium surface exactly as indicated by the calculations. This is due to the low stability of sub‐stoichiometric amounts of chemisorbed H correlating with the unfavorable charge state of Mg. They are merely bound to the unchanged adjacent Mg layers, thereby explaining the failure of classical hydrogenation catalysts, which effectively only hydrogenate Mg in their direct vicinity. The acceleration of hydrogen sorption kinetics in Mg must affect the polarization in the interface between Mg and MgH2 during hydrogenation.

Abstract

The measurement of hydrogen induced changes on the electronic structure of transition metal oxides by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is a challenging endeavor, since the origin of the photoelectron cannot be unambiguously assigned to hydrogen. The H-induced electronic structure changes in tungsten trioxide have been known for more than 100 years, but are still being controversially debated. The controversy stems from the difficulty in disentangling effects due to hydrogenation from the effects of oxygen deficiencies. Using a membrane approach to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, in combination with tuneable synchrotron radiation we measure simultaneously core levels and valence band up to a hydrogen pressure of 1000 mbar. Upon hydrogenation, the intensities of the W$^{5+}$ core level and a state close to the Fermi level increase following the pressure-composition isotherm curve of bulk H$_x$WO$_3$. Combining experimental data and density-functional theory the description of the hydrogen induced coloration by a proton polaron model is corroborated. Although hydrogen is the origin of the electronic structure changes near the Fermi edge, the valence band edge is now dominated by tungsten orbitals instead of oxygen as is the case for the pristine oxide having wider implication for its use as (photo-electrochemical) catalyst., Comment: accepted by Phys.
