1. Extremely high-aspect-ratio ultrafast Bessel beam generation and stealth dicing of multi-millimeter thick glass

Abstract

We report on the development of an ultrafast beam shaper capable of generating Bessel beams of high cone angle that maintain a high-intensity hot spot with subwavelength diameter over a propagation distance in excess of 8~mm. This generates a high-intensity focal region with extremely high aspect ratio exceeding 10~000:1. The absence of intermediate focusing in the shaper allows for shaping very high energies, up to Joule levels. We demonstrate proof of principle application of the Bessel beam shaper for stealth dicing of thick glass, up to 1~cm. We expect this high energy Bessel beam shaper will have applications in several areas of high intensity laser physics., Comment: 3 figures

Abstract

Dissipative solitons are remarkable localized states of a physical system that arise from the dynamical balance between nonlinearity, dispersion and environmental energy exchange. They are the most universal form of soliton that can exist in nature, and are seen in far-from-equilibrium systems in many fields including chemistry, biology, and physics. There has been particular interest in studying their properties in mode-locked lasers producing ultrashort light pulses, but experiments have been limited by the lack of convenient measurement techniques able to track the soliton evolution in real-time. Here, we use dispersive Fourier transform and time lens measurements to simultaneously measure real-time spectral and temporal evolution of dissipative solitons in a fiber laser as the turn-on dynamics pass through a transient unstable regime with complex break-up and collision dynamics before stabilizing to a regular mode-locked pulse train. Our measurements enable reconstruction of the soliton amplitude and phase and calculation of the corresponding complex-valued eigenvalue spectrum to provide further physical insight. Abstract

We present experimental evidence of the universal emergence of the Peregrine soliton predicted in the semi-classical (zero-dispersion) limit of the focusing nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. {\bf 66}, 678 (2012)]. Experiments studying higher-order soliton propagation in optical fiber use an optical sampling oscilloscope and frequency-resolved optical gating to characterise intensity and phase around the first point of soliton compression and the results show that the properties of the compressed pulse and background pedestal can be interpreted in terms of the Peregrine soliton. Experimental and numerical results reveal that the universal mechanism under study is highly robust and can be observed over a broad range of parameters, and experiments are in very good agreement with numerical simulations.

Abstract

Self similarity and asymptotic evolution are key concepts of many physical phenomena. Recent research in optics has identified a new operating class of ultrashort pulse known as the optical similariton, a pulse with parabolic intensity profile generated during propagation in normal dispersion regime optical fiber amplifiers. As well as their intrinsic scientific interest, optical similaritons have significant practical application due to the fact they can propagate without distortion in any active or passive normal dispersion fiber, and their strictly linear chirp allows for efficient compression. This thesis aims to study the generation of optical similaritons in an erbium doped fiber amplifier. The experimental pulses characterized with frequency resolved optical gating have shown an intensity profile and a frequency chirp in good accordance with numerical modelling. We have also determined the presence of exponential decaying wings during the intermediate asymptotic dynamics. A typical use of similaritons is in the development of an ultrashort pulse source and, experimentally, we have also developed an all fiber femtosecond system by combining the similariton amplifier with photonic band-gap fiber technology. Key words : Similariton, parabolic pulse, self-similar evolution, intermediate asymptotic regime, frequency resolved optical gating (FROG), photonic band-gap fiber.; L'autosimilarité et l'évolution asymptotique intermédiaire sont des caractéristiques fondamentales de divers phénomènes physiques. Les recherches dans le domaine de l'optique ont mené à la prévision et à l'observation du similariton, nouvelle classe d'impulsions optiques ultracourtes présentant un profil d'intensité parabolique et développé par celles-ci au cours de leur propagation dans un amplificateur fibré à dispersion normale. Au delà de leur intérêt scientifique, les similaritons optiques sont d'une importance pratique primordiale du fait que leur profil peut être maintenu sans distorsion dans toute fibre à dispersion normale active ou passive et parce qu'ils possèdent un chirp strictement linéaire facilitant leur compression. Ce mémoire s'attache à mettre en évidence les possibilités d'obtention de ce profil dans un amplificateur à fibre dopée erbium. Les impulsions expérimentales caractérisées à l'aide d'un dispositif FROG présentent un profil d'intensité ainsi qu'une dérive fréquentielle en accord avec les résultats issus d'un modèle numérique. Nous avons aussi été en mesure d'étudier la formation des ailes du similariton durant son régime asymptotique intermédiaire. Une application typique des similaritons consiste dans le développement de sources impulsionnelles ultracourtes; expérimentalement nous avons développé un dispositif femtoseconde totalement fibré combinant un amplificateur à similaritons et une fibre à bandes interdites photoniques.

36. Numerical and experimental study of parabolic pulses generated via Raman amplification in standard optical fibers.

Abstract

Parabolic pulse generation by Raman amplification has been numerically and experimentally investigated around 1550 nm using a standard normally dispersive nonzero dispersion shifted fiber (NZ-DSF). The output pulses, characterized in intensity and phase using frequency-resolved optical gating, exhibit parabolic features in good agreement with numerical simulations based on two coupled extended nonlinear Schrödinger equations. The influence of the energy and duration of the input pulse has been studied. The ability of the parabolic pulses to propagate self-similarly during additional propagation over 800 m of NZ-DSF has also been demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

International audience; Modulation instability (MI) is one of the most fundamental processes in nonlinear fiber optics, underlying energy exchange dynamics in parametric amplification and dominating the initial stages of noise-seeded long pulse supercontinuum generation [1]. MI is also linked with the emergence of large amplitude optical rogue wave structures with long-tailed statistics [2]. In particular, numerical simulations of noise-seeded MI show a chaotic pattern of localized peaks that are potential candidates for rogue wave events, but the exact nature of these peaks remains a subject of active study. Although previous studies have shown that the highest-intensity events can be fitted with particular spatio-temporally localized solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) [3], the characteristics over the full intensity range remain unclear. Here we report extensive numerical simulations of the NLSE, iψξ + 1/2ψττ + |ψ|2 ψ = 0, showing that the spontaneously emergent peaks due to MI can in fact be globally described by analytic soliton on finite background (SFB) or “breather” solutions and their superpositions. We also report on a detailed statistical analysis, revealing how the Peregrine soliton is not – as widely believed – statistically rare enough to be considered as a rogue wave prototype.

47. Generation of extremely high-angle Bessel beams.

Abstract

We present a setup to generate tightly focused Bessel beams that is composed of a half-ball lens coupled with a relay lens. The system is simple and compact compared to conventional imaging of axicons based on microscope objectives. We experimentally demonstrate the generation of a Bessel beam with a 42° cone angle at 980 nm in air with a typical beam length of 500µ m and a central core radius of about 550 nm. We numerically studied the effects of the misalignment of the different optical elements and the range of tilt and shift that are acceptable to obtain a regular Bessel beam.

48. Noise in supercontinuum generated using PM and non-PM tellurite glass all-normal dispersion fibers.

Abstract

Intensity fluctuations in supercontinuum generation are studied in polarization-maintaining (PM) and non-PM all-normal dispersion tellurite photonic crystal fibers. Dispersive Fourier transformation is used to resolve the shot-to-shot spectra generated using 225-fs pump pulses at 1.55 μ m, with experimental results well reproduced by vector and scalar numerical simulations. By comparing the relative intensity noise for the PM and non-PM cases, supported by simulations, we demonstrate the advantage of the polarization-maintaining property of the PM fibers in preserving low-noise dynamics. We associate the low-noise in the PM case with the suppression of polarization modulation instability.

49. High Aspect Ratio Structuring of Glass with Ultrafast Bessel Beams.

Abstract

Controlling the formation of high aspect ratio void channels inside glass is important for applications like the high-speed dicing of glass. Here, we investigate void formation using ultrafast Bessel beams in the single shot illumination regime. We characterize the morphology of the damages as a function of pulse energy, pulse duration, and position of the beam inside fused silica, Corning Eagle XG, and Corning Gorilla glass. While a large set of parameters allow for void formation inside fused silica, the operating window is much more restricted for Eagle XG and Gorilla glass. The transient formation of a molten layer around voids enables us interpreting the evolution of the morphology with pulse energy and duration.

Abstract

Understanding dynamical complexity is one of the most important challenges in science. Significant progress has recently been made in optics through the study of dissipative soliton laser systems, where dynamics are governed by a complex balance between nonlinearity, dispersion, and energy exchange. A particularly complex regime of such systems is associated with noise-like pulse multiscale instabilities, where sub-picosecond pulses with random characteristics evolve chaotically underneath a much longer envelope. However, although observed for decades in experiments, the physics of this regime remains poorly understood, especially for highly-nonlinear cavities generating broadband spectra. Here, we address this question directly with a combined numerical and experimental study that reveals the physical origin of instability as nonlinear soliton dynamics and supercontinuum turbulence. Real-time characterisation reveals intracavity extreme events satisfying statistical rogue wave criteria, and both real-time and time-averaged measurements are in quantitative agreement with modelling., (© 2021.
