Search

Determining the physical nature of a star requires precise knowledge of its stellar atmospheric parameters, including effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity. This study presents a new atomic line list covering a broad spectral range (1-2.5 $\mu$m; $YJHK$-bands) for iron (Fe) and $\alpha$-elements (Ca, Mg, Ti, Si) to improve stellar parameter determination using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. We highlight the limitations of existing line lists, stemming primarily from inconsistencies in oscillator strengths for ionized iron lines within the APOGEE DR17. The line list was validated using the high-resolution and high-quality disc-center NIR spectra of the Sun and its solar analog HD 76151. As a result of the spectroscopic analyses, the effective temperature of HD 76151 was calculated as 5790$\pm$170 K, surface gravity as 4.35$\pm$0.18 cgs, metal abundance as 0.24$\pm$0.09 dex, and microturbulence velocity of 0.30$^{\rm +0.5}_{\rm -0.3}$ km s$^{-1}$ by combining the optical and NIR line lists. A comparison of the model atmospheric parameters calculated for HD 76151 with the PARSEC isochrones resulted in a stellar mass of $1.053_{-0.068}^{+0.056} M_{\odot}$, radius $1.125_{-0.011}^{+0.035} R_{\odot}$, and an age of 5.5$^{\rm +2.5}_{\rm -2.1}$ Gyr. For the first time, kinematic and dynamical orbital analyses of HD 76151 using a combination of Gaia astrometric and spectroscopic data showed that the star was born in a metal-rich region within the Solar circle and is a member of the thin disc population. In this study, spectral, age, kinematic, and orbital dynamical analyses were conducted on metal-poor and high proper-motion (HPM) stars, HD 8724 and HD 195633, selected from the Solar neighborhood. This analysis combines detailed abundance measurements, kinematics, and orbital dynamics to determine their origin. Standard 1D local thermodynamic equilibrium analysis provides a fresh determination of the atmospheric parameters: $T_{\rm eff}=$4700$\pm$115 K, $\log g=$ 1.65$\pm$0.32 cgs, [Fe/H]=-1.59$\pm$0.04 dex, and a microturbulent velocity $\xi=$ 1.58$\pm$0.50 km s$^{\rm -1}$ for HD 8724 and $T_{\rm eff}=$6100$\pm$205 K, $\log g=$3.95$\pm$0.35 cgs, [Fe/H]=-0.52$\pm$0.05 dex, and $\xi=$1.26$\pm$0.50 km s$^{\rm -1}$ for HD 195633. The ages were estimated using a Bayesian approach (12.25 Gyr for HD 8724 and 8.15 Gyr for HD 195633). The escape scenarios of these stars from 170 candidate globular clusters (GCs) in the Galaxy were also investigated because of their chemical and physical differences (HPM and metal-poor nature). Accordingly, the calculated probability of encounter ($59\%$) for HD 8724 at a distance of five tidal radius suggests that star HD 8724 may have escaped from NGC 5139 ($\omega$ Cen), supported by its highly flattened orbit and may belong to a sub-population of this GC. Eclipsing binary systems are significant objects for astrophysics in that direct observations can determine the fundamental parameters of stars. In this study, we determined precisely the fundamental parameters of the binary component stars obtained by simultaneous analysis of radial velocities and the {\it TESS} light curve using the Wilson and Devinney code. Following the analysis, the masses and radii of the primary and secondary components were determined as $M_{1}= 1.58\pm 0.01M_\odot$, $M_{2}= 0.48\pm0.02M_\odot$, and $R_{1}=1.93\pm 0.01R_\odot$, $R_{2}= 1.14\pm 0.01 R_\odot$, respectively. Furthermore, the distance of IS CMa is calculated as $92.7\pm6.5$ pc. On the basis of the analysis of the mid-eclipse times, it was found that the variation in the orbital period is represented by an upward parabola. It has an increasing rate of $dP/dt$ = 1.09 $\times$ 10$^{-7}$ day yr$^{-1}$. Using PARSEC stellar evolutionary tracks and isochrones with solar metallicity were estimated the age of IS CMa as $1.3\pm0.1$ Gyr. Kinematic and Galactic orbital parameters of IS CMa were obtained from the astrometric and spectroscopic data of the system. The hyperfine structure of 40 spectral lines of singly ionized thulium (Tm II) in emission spectra from a hollow cathode discharge lamp measured with a Fourier transform spectrometer in the wavelength range from 335 nm to 2345 nm has been investigated. As a result of the analysis, the magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constants $A$ for 27 fine structure levels of Tm II were determined for the first time. Developments on various relations among stellar variables such as the main sequence empirical mass-luminosity (MLR), mass-radius (MRR) and mass-effective temperature (MTR) relations were reviewed. Conceptual changes in their understanding and usages were discussed. After its discovery, MLR was treated as one of the fundamental secrets of the cosmos. Differences between fundamental laws and statistical relations were used to understand long-term developments of MLR, MRR and MTR. Developments show a break point, initiated by Andersen et al. (1991), in the line of progress. Before the break when reliable data were limited, MLR and MRR were calibrated using M, L, and R of binary components of all kinds visual, spectroscopic, and eclipsing for two purposes: i) obtaining mean mass, mean luminosity, and mean radius, ii) to estimate M and R of single stars. By the time of the break, the number of solutions from detached double-lined eclipsing binaries (DDEB) giving accurate M and R within a few percent levels are increased. Parameters from very close, semi-detached, and contact binaries were excluded for refinement, however, MLR and MRR diagrams were found insufficient to derive MLR and MRR functions because the dispersions are not only due to random observational errors but also due to chemical composition and age differences. Then, a new trend was adopted by replacing classical MLR and MRR with empirical M and R predicting relations. Thus, the purpose one was suppressed also because the new trend found a fruitful application in determining M and R of exoplanet hosting single stars. A detailed analysis of ground-based CCD UBV photometry and space-based Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) data for the open clusters King 6 and NGC 1605 was performed. Using the pyUPMASK algorithm on Gaia astrometric data to estimate cluster membership probabilities, we have identified 112 stars in King 6 and 160 stars in NGC 1605 as the statistically most likely members of each cluster. We calculated reddening and metallicity separately using UBV two-color diagrams to estimate parameter values via independent methods. The color excess $E(B-V)$ and photometric metallicity [Fe/H] for King 6 are $0.515 \pm 0.030$ mag and $0.02 \pm 0.20$ dex, respectively. For NGC 1605, they are $0.840 \pm 0.054$ mag and $0.01 \pm 0.20$ dex. With reddening and metallicity kept constant, we have estimated the distances and cluster ages by fitting PARSEC isochrones to color-magnitude diagrams based on the Gaia and UBV data. Photometric distances are 723 $\pm$ 34 pc for King 6 and 3054 $\pm$ 243 pc for NGC 1605. The cluster ages are $200 \pm 20$ Myr and $400 \pm 50$ Myr for King 6 and NGC 1605, respectively. Mass function slopes were found to be 1.29 $\pm$ 0.18 and 1.63 $\pm$ 0.36 for King 6 and NGC 1605, respectively. These values are in good agreement with the value of Salpeter (1955). The relaxation times were estimated as 5.8 Myr for King 6 and 60 Myr for NGC 1605. This indicates that both clusters are dynamically relaxed since these times are less than the estimated cluster ages. We propose a line list that may be useful for the abundance analysis of G-type stars in the wavelength range 4080 -- 6780 A. It is expected that the line list will be useful for surveys/libraries with overlapping spectral regions (e.g. ELODIE/SOPHIE libraries, UVES-580 setting of Gaia-ESO), and in particular for the analysis of F- and G-type stars in general. The atomic data are supplemented by detailed references to the sources. We estimated the Solar abundances using stellar lines and the high-resolution Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) spectra of the Sun to determine the uncertainty in the log gf values. By undertaking a systematic search that makes use of the lower excitation potential and gf-values and using revised multiplet table as an initial guide, we identified 363 lines of 24 species that have accurate gf-values and are free of blends in the spectra of the Sun and a Solar analogue star, HD 218209 (G6V), for which accurate and up-to-date abundances were obtained from both ELODIE and PolarBASE spectra of the star. We perform extensive spectroscopy of the supernova remnant N63A in the Large Magellanic Cloud, using $\sim 43$ ks {\it Chandra} archival data. By analysing the spectra of the entire remnant, we determine the abundance distributions for O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe. We detect evidence of enhanced O and possibly Ne and Mg in some of the central regions which might indicate an asymmetric distribution of the ejecta. The average O/Ne, O/Mg, and Ne/Mg abundance ratios of the ejecta are in plausible agreement with the nucleosynthesis products from the explosion of a $\sim40$ $M_{\odot}$ progenitor. We estimate an upper limit on the Sedov age of $\sim 5,400\pm200$ yr and explosion energy of $\sim 8.9\pm 1.6\times 10^{51}$ erg for N63A. This paper presents photometric, astrometric, and kinematic analyses of the open clusters NGC 189, NGC 1758 and NGC 7762 based on CCD UBV photometric and Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) data. According to membership analyses, we identified 32, 57 and 106 most probable member stars with membership probabilities $P\geq 0.5$ in NGC 189, NGC 1758 and NGC 7762, respectively. The color excesses and photometric metallicities of each cluster were determined separately using UBV two-color diagrams. The color excess $E(B-V)$ is $0.590 \pm 0.023$ mag for NGC 189, $0.310 \pm 0.022$ mag for NGC 1758 and $0.640 \pm 0.017$ mag for NGC 7762. The photometric metallicity [Fe/H] is $-0.08 \pm 0.03$ dex for both NGC 189 and NGC 1758, and $-0.12 \pm 0.02$ dex for NGC 7762. Distance moduli and ages of the clusters were obtained by comparing PARSEC isochrones with the color-magnitude diagrams constructed from UBV and Gaia photometric data. During this process, we kept as constant color excess and metallicity for each cluster. The estimated isochrone distance is $1201 \pm 53$ pc for NGC 189, $902 \pm 33$ pc for NGC 1758 and $911 \pm 31$ pc for NGC 7762. These are compatible with the values obtained from trigonometric parallax. Ages of the clusters are $500\pm 50$ Myr, $650\pm 50$ Myr and $2000\pm 200$ Myr for NGC 189, NGC 1758 and NGC 7762, respectively. Galactic orbit integration of the clusters showed that NGC 1758 completely orbits outside the solar circle, while NGC 189 and NGC 7762 enter the solar circle during their orbits., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures and 6 tables, accepted for publication in Advances in Space Research

The spatial distribution, Galactic model parameters and luminosity function of cataclysmic variables (CVs) are established using re-estimated trigonometric parallaxes of {\it Gaia} DR3. The data sample of 1,587 CVs in this study is claimed to be suitable for Galactic model parameter estimation as the distances are based on trigonometric parallaxes and the {\it Gaia} DR3 photometric completeness limits were taken into account when the sample was created. According to the analysis, the scale height of All CVs increases from 248$\pm$2 to 430$\pm$4 pc towards shorter periods near the lower limit of the period gap and suddenly drops to 300$\pm$2 pc for the shortest orbital period CVs. The exponential scale heights of All CVs and magnetic systems are found to be 375$\pm$2 and 281$\pm$3 pc, respectively, considerably larger than those suggested in previous observational studies. The local space density of All CVs and magnetic systems in the sample are $6.8^{+1.3}_{-1.1}\times$10$^{-6}$ and $2.1^{+0.5}_{-0.4}\times10^{-6}$ pc$^{-3}$, respectively. Our measurements strengthen the 1-2 order of magnitude discrepancy between CV space densities predicted by population synthesis models and observations. It is likely that this discrepancy is due to objects undetected by CV surveys, such as the systems with very low $\dot{M}$ and the ones in the period gap. The comparisons of the luminosity function of white dwarfs with the luminosity function of All CVs in this study show that 500 times the luminosity function of CVs fits very well to the luminosity function of white dwarfs. Arbitrariness in the zero point of bolometric corrections is a nearly century-old paradigm leading to two more paradigms. "Bolometric corrections must always be negative," and "bolometric magnitude of a star ought to be brighter than its $V$ magnitude". Both were considered valid before IAU 2015 General Assembly Resolution B2, a revolutionary document that supersedes all three aforementioned paradigms. The purpose of this article is to initiate a new insight and a new understanding of the fundamental astrophysics and present new capabilities to obtain standard and more accurate stellar luminosities and gain more from accurate observations in the era after Gaia. We present photometric, astrometric, and kinematic studies of the old open star clusters NGC 1193 and NGC 1798. Both of the clusters are investigated by combining data sets from Gaia EDR3 and CCD UBV observational data. Analysis of the radial distribution of stars through the cluster regions indicates that the cluster limit radii are $r_{\rm lim}=8'$ for both of the clusters. We determine the membership probabilities of stars considering Gaia EDR3 proper motion and trigonometric parallax data, resulting in 361 stars in NGC 1193 and 428 in NGC 1798 being identified as most likely cluster members, having membership probabilities greater than P>0.5. Mean proper motion components are estimated as ($\mu_{\alpha}\cos \delta$, $\mu_{\delta}) = (-0.207(0.009), -0.431(0.008)$) for NGC 1193 and ($\mu_{\alpha}\cos \delta$, $\mu_{\delta})=(0.793(0.006), -0.373(0.005)$) mas/yr for NGC 1798. E(B-V) color excesses were derived for NGC 1193 as $0.150(0.037)$ and for NGC 1798 as 0.505(0.100) mag through the use of two-color diagrams. Photometric metallicities are also determined from two-color diagrams with the results of [Fe/H] = -0.30(0.06) dex for NGC 1193 and [Fe/H]=-0.20(0.07) dex for NGC 1798. The isochrone fitting distance and age of NGC 1193 are 5562(381) pc and 4.6(1) Gyr, respectively. For NGC 1798, these parameters are 4451(728) pc and 1.3(0.2) Gyr. These ages indicate that NGC 1193 and NGC 1798 are old open clusters. The overall present-day mass function slopes for main-sequence stars are found as 1.38(2.16) for NGC 1193 and 1.30(0.21) for NGC 1798, which are in fair agreement with the value of Salpeter (1955). Kinematic and dynamic orbital calculations indicate that NGC 1193 and NGC 1798 belong to the thick-disk and thin-disk populations, respectively. This study calculated astrophysical parameters, as well as kinematic and galactic orbital parameters, of the open clusters NGC 1664 and NGC 6939. The work is based on CCD UBV and Gaia photometric and astrometric data from ground and space-based observations. Considering Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) astrometric data, we determined membership probabilities of stars located in both of the clusters. We used two-color diagrams to determine $E(B-V)$ color excesses for NGC 1664 and NGC 6939 as $0.190 \pm 0.018$ and $0.380 \pm 0.025$ mag, respectively. Photometric metallicities for the two clusters were estimated as [Fe/H] = $-0.10 \pm 0.02$ dex for NGC 1664 and as [Fe/H] = $-0.06 \pm 0.01$ dex for NGC 6939. Using the reddening and metallicity calculated in the study, we obtained distance moduli and ages of the clusters by fitting PARSEC isochrones to the color-magnitude diagrams based on the most likely member stars. Isochrone fitting distances are $1289 \pm 47$ pc and $1716 \pm 87$ pc, which coincide with ages of $675 \pm 50$ Myr and $1.5 \pm 0.2$ Gyr for NGC 1664 and NGC 6939, respectively. We also derived the distances to the clusters using Gaia trigonometric parallaxes and compared these estimates with the literature. We concluded that the results are in good agreement with those given by the current study. Present day mass function slopes were calculated as $\Gamma=-1.22\pm0.33$ and $\Gamma=-1.18\pm0.21$ for NGC 1664 and NGC 6939, respectively, which are compatible with the Salpeter (1955) slope. Analyses showed that both of clusters are dynamically relaxed. We present a detailed X-ray spectroscopic study of the supernova remnant DEM L71 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Based on deep $\sim 103$ ks archival {\it Chandra} data, we perform a detailed spatially resolved spectral analysis of DEM L71. We analyze regional spectra extracted from thin-sliced regions along several different azimuthal directions of the SNR to construct radial profiles of elemental abundances for O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe. Our elemental abundance measurements reveal an asymmetrical spatial distribution of metal-rich ejecta gas. Especially the asymmetry on the western part of the central Fe distribution is remarkable. While the location of the contact discontinuity is generally at $\sim 5$ pc from the geometric center of the X-ray emission of DEM L71, it is uncertain in western part of the remnant. Fe is enhanced in the ejecta while O and Ne abundances are generally negligible. This finding confirms the Type Ia origin of DEM L71. We estimate an upper limit on the Sedov age of $\sim 6,660\pm 770$ yr and explosion energy of $\sim 1.74\pm 0.35\times 10^{51}$ erg for the remnant. Methods of obtaining stellar luminosities (L) have been revised and a new concept, standard stellar luminosity, has been defined. Among the three methods (direct method from radii and effective temperatures, method using a mass-luminosity relation (MLR), and method requiring a bolometric correction), the third method, which uses the unique bolometric correction (BC) of a star extracted from a flux ratio ($f_{\rm V}/f_{\rm Bol}$) obtained from the observed spectrum with sufficient spectral coverage and resolution, is estimated to provide an uncertainty ($\Delta L/L$) typically at a low percentage, which could be as accurate as 1% perhaps more. The typical and limiting uncertainties of the predicted L of the three methods were compared. The secondary methods requiring either a pre-determined non-unique BC or MLR were found to provide less accurate luminosities than the direct method, which could provide stellar luminosities with a typical accuracy of 8.2% - 12.2% while its estimated limiting accuracy is 2.5%., Comment: 10 pages, including 1 figure and 2 tables, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We analysed the open clusters Czernik 2 and NGC 7654 using CCD UBV photometric and Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) photometric and astrometric data. Structural parameters of the two clusters were derived, including the physical sizes of Czernik 2 being r=5 and NGC 7654 as 8 min. We calculated membership probabilities of stars based on their proper motion components as released in the Gaia EDR3. To identify member stars of the clusters, we used these membership probabilities taking into account location and the impact of binarity on main-sequence stars. We used membership probabilities higher than $P=0.5$ to identify 28 member stars for Czernik 2 and 369 for NGC 7654. We estimated colour-excesses and metallicities separately using two-colour diagrams to derive homogeneously determined parameters. The derived $E(B-V)$ colour excess is 0.46(0.02) mag for Czernik 2 and 0.57(0.04) mag for NGC 7654. Metallicities were obtained for the first time for both clusters, -0.08(0.02) dex for Czernik 2 and -0.05(0.01) dex for NGC 7654. Keeping the reddening and metallicity as constant quantities, we fitted PARSEC models using colour-magnitude diagrams, resulting in estimated distance moduli and ages of the two clusters. We obtained the distance modulus for Czernik 2 as 12.80(0.07) mag and for NGC 7654 as 13.20(0.16) mag, which coincide with ages of 1.2(0.2) Gyr and 120(20) Myr, respectively. The distances to the clusters were calculated using the Gaia EDR3 trigonometric parallaxes and compared with the literature. We found good agreement between the distances obtained in this study and the literature. Present day mass function slopes for both clusters are comparable with the value of Salpeter (1955), being X=-1.37(0.24) for Czernik 2 and X=-1.39(0.19) for NGC 7654., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures and 9 tables, accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Science

Arbitrariness attributed to the zero point constant of the $V$ band bolometric corrections ($BC_V$) and its relation to "bolometric magnitude of a star ought to be brighter than its visual magnitude" and "bolometric corrections must always be negative" was investigated. The falsehood of the second assertion became noticeable to us after IAU 2015 General Assembly Resolution B2, where the zero point constant of bolometric magnitude scale was decided to have a definite value $C_{Bol}(W)= 71.197~425~...$~. Since the zero point constant of the $BC_V$ scale could be written as $C_2=C_{Bol}-C_V$, where $C_V$ is the zero point constant of the visual magnitudes in the basic definition $BC_V=M_{Bol}-M_V=m_{bol}-m_V$, and $C_{Bol}>C_V$, the zero point constant ($C_2$) of the $BC_V$ scale cannot be arbitrary anymore; rather, it must be a definite positive number obtained from the two definite positive numbers. We present reddening, photometric metallicity, age and distance estimates for the Frolov 1 and NGC 7510 open clusters based on CCD UBV photometric and Gaia data. Photometric observations were collected using the 1-m telescope of the T\"UB\.ITAK National Observatory. Gaia DR2 proper motion data in the direction of two groupings were used to identify cluster membership. We determined mean proper motion values ($ \mu_{\alpha}\cos\delta, \mu_{\delta}$) = ($-3.02\pm 0.10$, $-1.75 \pm 0.08$) and ($-3.66 \pm 0.07$, $-2.17 \pm 0.06$) mas yr$^{-1}$ for Frolov 1 and NGC 7510, respectively. We used two-colour diagrams to obtain $E(B-V)$ colour excesses for Frolov 1 and NGC 7510 as $0.65\pm0.06$ and $1.05\pm0.05$ mag, respectively. We derived the photometric metallicity of Frolov 1 as [Fe/H] = 0.03$\pm$0.03 dex and adopted a solar metallicity for NGC 7510. Based on these reddening and metallicities we determined the distance moduli and ages of the clusters via fitting PARSEC isochrones to the cluster colour-magnitude diagrams. Isochrone fitting distances for Frolov 1 and NGC 7510 are $2864 \pm 254$ and $2818 \pm 247$ pc, respectively, which correspond to the ages $35\pm 10$ Myr and $18\pm 6$ Myr. We also calculated mean Gaia distances and compared them with those given in the literature and in this study, concluding that our results are in good agreement with previous work. In this study, investigation of two double-lined binary stars KIC 5113146 and KIC 5111815 in NGC 6819 is presented based on both photometric and spectroscopic data. Simultaneous analysis of light and radial velocity curves was made and the absolute parameters of the systems' components were determined for the first time. We find that both systems have F-type main-sequence components. The masses and radii were found to be $M_1=1.29\pm0.02 M_{\odot}$, $R_{1}=1.47\pm0.03 R_{\odot}$ and $M_{2}=1.19\pm0.02 M_{\odot}$, $R_{2}=1.13\pm0.02 R_{\odot}$ for the primary and secondary components of KIC 5113146; $M_{1}=1.51\pm0.08 M_{\odot}$, $R_{1}=2.02\pm0.05 R_{\odot}$ and $M_{2}=1.19\pm0.07 M_{\odot}$, $R_{2}=1.32\pm0.04 R_{\odot}$ for components of KIC 5111815, respectively. Evolutionary status of the components was evaluated based on the MESA evolutionary tracks and isochrones. The ages of the KIC 5111815 and KIC 5113146 were derived to be about $2.50\pm0.35$ Gyr and $1.95\pm0.40$ Gyr, respectively. Photometric distances were calculated to be $2850\pm 185$ pc for KIC 5113146 and $3120\pm 260$ pc for KIC 5111815. Nearby detached double-lined eclipsing binaries with most accurate data were studied and 290 systems were found with at least one main-sequence component having a metallicity $0.008\leq Z\leq 0.040$. Stellar parameters, light ratios, Gaia DR2 trigonometric parallaxes, extinctions and/or reddening were investigated and only 206 systems were selected eligible to calculate empirical bolometric corrections. NASA-IPAC Galactic dust maps were main source of extinctions. Unreliable extinctions at low Galactic latitudes $|b|\leq5^o$ were replaced with individual determinations, if they exist in the literature, else associated systems are discarded. Main-sequence stars of remaining systems were used to calculate bolometric corrections ($BC$) and to calibrate $BC-T_{eff}$ relation, which is valid in the range 3100-36000 K. De-reddened $(B-V)_0$ colours, on the other hand, allowed us to calibrate two intrinsic colour effective temperature relations, where the linear one is valid for $T_{eff}>10000$ K, while the quadratic relation is valid for $T_{eff}<10000$ K, that is, both are valid in the same temperature range $BC-T_{eff}$ relation is valid. We derive transformation equations between GALEX and UBV colours by using the reliable data of 556 stars. We present two sets of equations; as a function of (only) luminosity class, and as a function of both luminosity class and metallicity. The metallicities are provided from the literature, while the luminosity classes are determined by using the PARSEC mass tracks in this study. Small colour residuals and high squared correlation coefficients promise accurate derived colours. In this study, photometric metallicity and absolute magnitude calibrations were derived using F-G spectral type main-sequence stars in the Solar neighbourhood with precise spectroscopic, photometric and Gaia astrometric data for UBV photometry. The sample consists of 504 main-sequence stars covering the temperature, surface gravity and colour index intervals $5300 4$ (cgs) and $0.3<(B-V)_0<0.8$ mag, respectively. Stars with relative trigonometric parallax errors $\sigma_{\pi}/\pi\leq0.01$ were preferred from Gaia DR2 data for the estimation of their $M_V$ absolute magnitudes. In order to obtain calibrations, $(U-B)_0$ and $(B-V)_0$ colour indices of stars were preferred and a multi-variable second order equation was used. Calibrations are valid for main-sequence stars in the metallicity and absolute magnitude ranges $-2<{\rm [Fe/H]}<0.5$ dex and $2.5

We used the spectroscopic and astrometric data provided from the GALAH DR2 and Gaia DR2, respectively, for a large sample of stars to investigate the behaviour of the [$\alpha$/Fe] abundances via two procedures, i.e. kinematically and spectroscopically. With the kinematical procedure, we investigated the distribution of the [$\alpha$/Fe] abundances into the high/low probability thin disc, and high/low probability thick-disc populations in terms of total space velocity, [Fe/H] abundance, and age. The high probability thin-disc stars dominate in all sub-intervals of [$\alpha$/Fe], including the rich ones: [$\alpha$/Fe]$>0.3$ dex, where the high probability thick-disc stars are expected to dominate. This result can be explained by the limiting apparent magnitude of the GALAH DR2 ($V<14$ mag) and intermediate Galactic latitude of the star sample. Stars in the four populations share equivalent [$\alpha$/Fe] and [Fe/H] abundances, total space velocities and ages. Hence, none of these parameters can be used alone for separation of a sample of stars into different populations. High probability thin-disc stars with abundance $-1.3<{\rm[Fe/H]}\leq -0.5$ dex and age $9<\tau\leq13$ Gyr are assumed to have different birth places relative to the metal rich and younger ones. With the spectroscopic procedure, we separated the sample stars into $\alpha$-rich and $\alpha$-poor categories by means of their ages as well as their [$\alpha$/Fe] and [Fe/H] abundances. Stars older than 8 Gyr are richer in [$\alpha$/Fe] than the younger ones. We could estimate the abundance [$\alpha$/Fe]=0.14 dex as the boundery separating the $\alpha$-rich and $\alpha$-poor sub-samples in the [$\alpha$/Fe]$\times$[Fe/H] plane., Comment: 16 pages, including 15 figures and 5 tables, accepted for publication in PASA

In this study, we carried out CCD UBV photometry of eight open clusters, ASCC 115, Collinder 421, NGC 6793, NGC 7031, NGC 7039, NGC 7086, Roslund 1, Stock 21, and determined their reddening, metallicity, distance, age, and mass functions. We used new Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) astrometric data to separate cluster member stars from the field stars and obtain precise structural and astrophysical parameters. To identify cluster member stars we utilized an unsupervised membership assignment code (UPMASK), which is based on the photometric and astrometric data. The density distributions for the open clusters show good fits with the empirical King model except for Roslund 1 and Stock 21 not having central concentration. The colour excesses and metallicities were derived separately using U-B vs B-V two-colour diagrams. Keeping these parameters as constants, we simultaneously calculated distance moduli and ages of the clusters from V vs B-V and V vs U-B colour-magnitude diagrams using PARSEC theoretical isochrones. Taking into account Gaia DR2 proper motion components and parallaxes of the member stars, we also calculated mean proper motions and distances for the clusters. Distances derived both from isochrone fitting to colour-magnitude diagrams of the clusters and Gaia DR2 trigonometric parallaxes are compatible with each other. The early-type massive binary MQ Cen (P$_{orb}$=3.7 d) has been investigated by means of high-resolution ($R\sim48\,000$) spectral analysis and multi-band (Johnson $BVRI$ and Str\"{o}mgren $vby$) light curve modeling. The physical parameters of the components have been found to be $M_1= 4.26\pm0.10$ M$_{\odot}$, $R_1= 3.72\pm0.05 $R$_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff1}=16\,600\pm520$ K, and $M_2= 5.14\pm0.09 $M$_{\odot}$, $R_2= 7.32\pm0.03 $R$_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff2}=15\,000\pm500$ K for the primary and secondary, respectively. The orbital inclination is $i=87.0\pm0.2$ deg. The distance to MQ Cen has been derived to be $d=2\,460\pm310$ pc which locates it in the Crux OB1 association. However, the age of MQ~Cen ($\sim70$ Myr) is higher than the one reported for the Crux OB1 association ($\sim$6 Myr). The derived masses are implying a spectral type of B5 for the primary and B4 for the secondary component. Nevertheless, the secondary component, which is more massive, appears to be cooler than the primary component: It has completed its lifetime on the main-sequence and it is now positioned at the turn-off point of the giant branch, meanwhile the less massive primary component is still staying on the main-sequence., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures and 4 tables, accepted for publication in Astrophysics and Space Science

We present an archival Chandra study of the O-rich supernova remnant (SNR) 1E 0102.2-7219 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Based on the deep $\sim$ 265 ks archival Chandra data we performed a detailed spatially resolved spectral analysis of 1E 0102.2-7219. Our aim is to reveal the spatial and chemical structures of this remnant in unprecedented details. Radial profiles of O, Ne and Mg abundances based on our analysis of regional spectra extracted along nine different azimuthal directions of 1E 0102.2-7219 suggest the contact discontinuity at $\sim$ 5-5.5 pc from the geometric center of the X-ray emission of the SNR. We find that the metal-rich ejecta gas extends further outward in west and southwest than in other directions of the SNR. The average O/Ne, O/Mg and Ne/Mg abundance ratios of the ejecta are in plausible agreement with the nucleosynthesis products from the explosion of a $\sim 40 M_\odot$ progenitor. We estimate an upper limit on the Sedov age of $\sim 3500$ yr and explosion energy of $\sim 1.8\times10^{51}$ erg for 1E 0102.2-7219. We discuss the implications of our results on the geometrical structure of the remnant, its circumstellar medium and the nature of the progenitor star. Absolute parameters of 509 main-sequence stars selected from the components of detached-eclipsing spectroscopic binaries in the Solar neighbourhood are used to study mass-luminosity, mass-radius and mass-effective temperature relations (MLR, MRR and MTR). The MLR function is found better if expressed by a six-piece classical MLR ($L \propto M^{\alpha}$) rather than a fifth or a sixth degree polynomial within the mass range of $0.179\leq M/M_{\odot}\leq 31$. The break points separating the mass-ranges with classical MLR do not appear to us to be arbitrary. Instead, the data indicate abrupt changes along the mass axis in the mean energy generation per unit of stellar mass. Unlike the MLR function, the MRR and MTR functions cannot be determined over the full range of masses. A single piece MRR function is calibrated from the radii of stars with $M\leq1.5M_{\odot}$, while a second single piece MTR function is found for stars with $M>1.5M_{\odot}$. The missing part of the MRR is computed from the MLR and MTR, while the missing part of the MTR is computed from the MLR and MRR. As a result, we have interrelated MLR, MRR and MTR, which are useful in determining the typical absolute physical parameters of main-sequence stars of given masses. These functions are also useful to estimate typical absolute physical parameters from typical $T_{eff}$ values. Thus, we were able to estimate the typical absolute physical parameters of main-sequence stars observed in the Sejong Open Cluster survey, based on that survey's published values for $T_{eff}$. In this study, we present CCD UBV photometry of poorly studied open star clusters, Dolidze 36, NGC 6728, NGC 6800, NGC 7209, and Platais 1, located in the first and second Galactic quadrants. Observations were obtained with T100, the 1-m telescope of the TUBITAK National Observatory. Using photometric data, we determined several astrophysical parameters such as reddening, distance, metallicity and ages and from them, initial mass functions, integrated magnitudes and colours. We took into account the proper motions of the observed stars to calculate the membership probabilities. The colour excesses and metallicities were determined independently using two-colour diagrams. After obtaining the colour excesses of the clusters Dolidze 36, NGC 6728, NGC 6800, NGC 7209, and Platais 1 as $0.19\pm0.06$, $0.15\pm0.05$, $0.32\pm0.05$, $0.12\pm0.04$, and $0.43\pm0.06$ mag, respectively, the metallicities are found to be $0.00\pm0.09$, $0.02\pm0.11$, $0.03\pm0.07$, $0.01\pm0.08$, and $0.01\pm0.08$ dex, respectively. Furthermore, using these parameters, distance moduli and age of the clusters were also calculated from colour-magnitude diagrams simultaneously using PARSEC theoretical models. The distances to the clusters Dolidze 36, NGC 6728, NGC 6800, NGC 7209, and Platais 1 are $1050\pm90$, $1610\pm190$, $1210\pm150$, $1060\pm 90$, and $1710\pm250$ pc, respectively, while corresponding ages are $400\pm100$, $750\pm150$, $400\pm100$, $600\pm100$, and $175\pm50$ Myr, respectively. Our results are compatible with those found in previous studies. The mass function of each cluster is derived. The slopes of the mass functions of the open clusters range from 1.31 to 1.58, which are in agreement with Salpeter's initial mass function. We aim to probe the dynamic structure of the extended Solar neighbourhood by calculating the radial metallicity gradients from orbit properties, which are obtained for axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric potential models, of red clump (RC) stars selected from the RAdial Velocity Experiment's Fourth Data Release. Distances are obtained by assuming a single absolute magnitude value in near-infrared, i.e. $M_{Ks}=-1.54\pm0.04$ mag, for each RC star. Stellar orbit parameters are calculated by using the potential functions: (i) for the MWPotential2014 potential, (ii) for the same potential with perturbation functions of the Galactic bar and transient spiral arms. The stellar age is calculated with a method based on Bayesian statistics. The radial metallicity gradients are evaluated based on the maximum vertical distance ($z_{max}$) from the Galactic plane and the planar eccentricity ($e_p$) of RC stars for both of the potential models. The largest radial metallicity gradient in the $01$ kpc, the radial metallicity gradients have zero or positive values and they do not depend on $e_p$ subsamples. There is a large radial metallicity gradient for thin disc, but no radial gradient found for thick disc. Moreover, the largest radial metallicity gradients are obtained where the outer Lindblad resonance region is effective. We present the calibration of the [$\alpha/$Fe] element in terms of ultra-violet excess for 465 dwarf stars with spectral type F0-K2. We used a single calibration, fitted to a third degree polynomial with a square of the correlation coefficient 0.74 and standard deviation 0.05 mag, for all stars due to their small colour range, $0.1<(g-r)_0\leq 0.6$ mag, and high frequency in the blueward of the spectrum which minimize the guillotine effect. Our calibration provides [$\alpha/$Fe] elements in the range $(-0.05, 0.35]$ dex. We applied the procedure to a high-latitude field, $85^\circ \leq b \leq 90^\circ$ with size 78 deg$^2$ and we could estimate the [$\alpha/$Fe] elements of 23,414 dwarf stars which occupy a Galactic region up to a vertical distance of $z=9$ kpc. We could detect a small positive gradient, $d[\alpha/{\rm Fe}]/dz=+0.032 \pm0.002$ dex kpc$^{-1}$, for the range $0

We used the updated [Fe/H] abundances of 168 F-G type dwarfs and calibrated them to a third order polynomial in terms of reduced ultraviolet excess, $\delta_{0.41}$ defined with $ugr$ data in the SDSS. We estimated the $M_g$ absolute magnitudes for the same stars via the re-reduced Hipparcos parallaxes and calibrated the absolute magnitude offsets, $\Delta M_g$, relative to the intrinsic sequence of Hyades to a third order polynomial in terms of $\delta_{0.41}$. We present the calibration of the [$\alpha$/Fe] element in terms of the ultra-violet excess for 469 dwarf stars with $0.325<(B-V)_0 \leq 0.775$ mag corresponding the spectral type range F0-K2. The star sample is separated into nine sub-samples with equal range in $(B-V)_0$ colour, $\Delta(B-V)_0=0.05$ mag, and a third degree polynomial is fitted to each dataset. Our calibrations provide [$\alpha$/Fe] elements in the range [0.0, 0.4]. We applied the procedure to two sets of field stars and two sets of clusters. The mean and the corresponding standard deviation of the residuals for 43 field stars taken from the Hypatia catalogue are [$\alpha$/Fe]=-0.090 and $\sigma =0.102$ dex, while for the 39 ones taken from the same catalogue of stars used in the calibration are [$\alpha$/Fe]=-0.009 and $\sigma = 0.079$ dex, respectively. We showed that the differences between the mean of the residuals and standard deviations for two sets of clusters ([$\alpha$/Fe]=0.073 and $\sigma = 0.91$ dex; [$\alpha$/Fe]=-0.012 and $\sigma = 0.053$ dex) originate from the $(B-V)_0$ and $(U-B)_0$ colour indices of the clusters which are taken from different sources. The differences between the original [$\alpha$/Fe] elements and the estimated ones (the residuals) are compatible with the uncertainties in the literature. An early-type, massive, short-period ($P_{\rm orb}=2^{\rm d}.310951$) eclipsing spectroscopic binary DN Cas has been re-visited with new spectral and photometric data. The masses and radii of the components have been obtained as $M_1=19.04\pm0.07 M_\odot$, $M_2=13.73\pm 0.05M_\odot$ and $R_1=7.22\pm0.06 R_\odot$, $R_2=5.79\pm0.06R_\odot$, respectively. Both components present synchronous rotation ($V_{\rm rot1}=160\,$km s$^{-1}$, $V_{\rm rot2}=130\,$km s$^{-1}$) with their orbit. Orbital period analysis yielded a physically bound additional component in the system with a minimum mass of $M_3=0.88 M_\odot$ orbiting in an eccentric orbit ($e=0.37\pm0.2$) with an orbital period of $P_{12}=42\pm9$ yrs. High precision absolute parameters of the system allowed us to derive a distance to DN Cas as 1.7$\pm$0.2 kpc which locates the system within the borders of the Cas OB6 association (d=1.8 kpc; Mel'nik & Dambis, 2009). The space velocities and the age of DN Cas are in agreement with those of Cas OB6. The age of DN Cas ($\tau=$3-5 Myr) is found to be 1-2 Myr older than the embedded clusters (IC 1795, IC 1805 and IC 1848) in the Cas OB6 association, which implies a sequential star formation in the association., Comment: 10 pages, including 5 figures and 5 tables, accepted for publication in PASA

We investigate the Milky Way Galaxy's radial and vertical metallicity gradients using a sample of 47,406 red clump stars from the RAVE DR4. This sample is more than twice the size of the largest sample in the literature investigating radial and vertical metallicity gradients. The absolute magnitude of Groenewegen (2008) is used to determine distances to our sample stars. The resulting distances agree with the RAVE DR4 distances Binney et al. (2014) of the same stars. Our photometric method also provides distances to 6185 stars that are not assigned a distance in RAVE DR4. The metallicity gradients are calculated with their current orbital positions ($R_{gc}$ and $Z$) and with their orbital properties (mean Galactocentric distance, $R_{m}$ and $z_{max}$), as a function of the distance to the Galactic plane: d[Fe/H]/d$R_{gc}=$-$0.047\pm0.003$ dex/kpc for $0\leq |Z|\leq0.5$ kpc and d[Fe/H]/d$R_m=$-$0.025\pm0.002$ dex/kpc for $0\leq z_{max}\leq0.5$ kpc. This reaffirms the radial metallicity gradient in the thin disc but highlights that gradients are sensitive to the selection effects caused by the difference between $R_{gc}$ and $R_{m}$. The radial gradient is flat in the distance interval 0.5-1 kpc from the plane and then becomes positive greater than 1 kpc from the plane. The radial metallicity gradients are also eccentricity dependent. We showed that d[Fe/H]/d$R_m=$-$0.089\pm0.010$, -$0.073\pm0.007$, -$0.053\pm0.004$ and -$0.044\pm0.002$ dex/kpc for $e_p\leq0.05$, $e_p\leq0.07$, $e_p\leq0.10$ and $e_p\leq0.20$ sub-samples, respectively, in the distance interval $0\leq z_{max}\leq0.5$ kpc. Similar trend is found for vertical metallicity gradients. Both the radial and vertical metallicity gradients are found to become shallower as the eccentricity of the sample increases. We present the results of CCD $UBV$ photometric and spectroscopic observations of the open cluster NGC 225. In order to determine the structural parameters of NGC 225, we calculated the stellar density profile in the cluster's field. We estimated the probabilities of the stars being physical members of the cluster using the existing astrometric data. The most likely members of the cluster were used in the determination of the astrophysical parameters of the cluster. We calculated the mean radial velocity of the cluster as $V_{r}=-8.3\pm 5.0$ km s$^{-1}$ from the optical spectra of eight stars in the cluster's field. Using the U-B vs B-V two-colour diagram and UV excesses of the F-G type main-sequence stars, the reddening and metallicity of NGC 225 were inferred as $E(B-V)=0.151\pm 0.047$ mag and $[Fe/H]=-0.11\pm 0.01$ dex, respectively. We fitted the colour-magnitude diagrams of NGC 225 with the PARSEC isochrones and derived the distance modulus, distance and age of the cluster as $\mu_{V}=9.3\pm 0.07$ mag, d=585$\pm$20 pc and $t=900\pm 100$ Myr, respectively. We present metallicity and photometric parallax calibrations for the F and G type dwarfs with photometric, astrometric and spectroscopic data. We present the results of CCD UBV observations of the open cluster NGC 6819. We calculated the stellar density profile in the cluster's field to determine the structural parameters of NGC 6819. Using the existing astrometric data, we calculated the probabilities of the stars being physical members of the cluster, and used these objects in the determination of the astrophysical parameters of NGC 6819. We inferred the reddening and metallicity of the cluster as $E(B-V)=0.130\pm0.035$ mag and $[Fe/H]=+0.051\pm 0.020$ dex, respectively, using the U-B vs B-V two-colour diagram and UV excesses of the F-G type main-sequence stars. We fit the colour-magnitude diagrams of NGC6819 with the PARSEC isochrones and derived the distance modula, distance and age of the cluster as $\mu_{V}=12.22\pm 0.10$ mag, $d=2309\pm106$ pc and $t=2.4\pm0.2$ Gyr, respectively. The parameters of the galactic orbit estimated for NGC 6819 indicate that the cluster is orbiting in a slightly eccentric orbit of $e=0.06$ with a period of $P_{orb}=142$ Myr. We estimated iron and metallicity gradients in the radial and vertical directions with the F and G type dwarfs taken from the RAVE DR4 database. The sample defined by the constraints Zmax<=825 pc and ep<=0.10 consists of stars with metal abundances and space velocity components agreeable with the thin-disc stars. The radial iron and metallicity gradients estimated for the vertical distance intervals 08 kpc. The range of the iron and metallicity abundance for the F and G type dwarfs on elongated orbits, [-0.13, -0.01), is similar to the thin-disc stars, while at least half of their space velocity components agree better with those of the thick-disc stars. The vertical iron gradients estimated for the F and G type dwarfs on circular orbits are d[Fe/H]/dZmax=-0.176(0.039) dex/kpc and d[Fe/H]/dZmax=-0.119(0.036) dex/kpc for the intervals Zmax<= 825 and Zmax<=1500 pc, respectively., Comment: 16 pages, including 11 figures and 5 tables, accepted for publication in PASA

We propose a new performance indicator to evaluate the productivity of research institutions by their disseminated scientific papers. The new quality measure includes two principle components: the normalized impact factor of the journal in which paper was published, and the number of citations received per year since it was published. In both components, the scientific impacts are weighted by the contribution of authors from the evaluated institution. As a whole, our new metric, namely, the institutional performance score takes into account both journal based impact and articles specific impacts. We apply this new scheme to evaluate research output performance of Turkish institutions specialized in astronomy and astrophysics in the period of 1998-2012. We present CCD $UBVRI$ photometry of the field of the open cluster NGC 6866. Structural parameters of the cluster are determined utilizing the stellar density profile of the stars in the field. We calculate the probabilities of the stars being a physical member of the cluster using their astrometric data and perform further analyses using only the most probable members. The reddening and metallicity of the cluster were determined by independent methods. The LAMOST spectra and the ultraviolet excess of the F and G type main-sequence stars in the cluster indicate that the metallicity of the cluster is about the solar value. We estimated the reddening $E(B-V)=0.074 \pm 0.050$ mag using the $U-B$ vs $B-V$ two-colour diagram. The distance modula, the distance and the age of NGC 6866 were derived as $\mu = 10.60 \pm 0.10$ mag, $d=1189 \pm 75$ pc and $t = 813 \pm 50$ Myr, respectively, by fitting colour-magnitude diagrams of the cluster with the PARSEC isochrones. The Galactic orbit of NGC 6866 indicates that the cluster is orbiting in a slightly eccentric orbit with $e=0.12$. The young binary system HD 350731 is a noteworthy laboratory for studying early-type binaries with similar components. We present here the analysis of differential multi-color photometric and spectroscopic observations for the double-lined detached system. Accurate absolute parameters were determined from the simultaneous solution of light and radial velocity curves for the first time. HD 350731 consists of two B8V-type components having masses and radii respectively of $M_{1}=2.91\pm0.13$ M$_{\odot}$, $M_{2}=2.80\pm0.14$ M$_{\odot}$, $R_{1}= 2.11 \pm0.05$ R$_{\odot}$ and $R_{2}=2.07\pm0.05$ R$_{\odot}$. The effective temperatures were determined based on analysis of disentangled spectra of the components and derived to be $12000\pm250$ K and $11830\pm300$ K for the primary and secondary components, respectively. The measured projected rotational velocities, 69.2$\pm$1.5 km s$^{-1}$ for primary and 70.1$\pm$1.7 km s$^{-1}$ for secondary, were found closer to the pseudo-synchronous velocities of the components. Comparison with evolutionary models suggests an age of 120$\pm$35 Myr. We estimated the scale-length of the thin disc with the J and W1 magnitudes of the most probable Red Clump (RC) stars in the Galactic plane, $-0\overset{^\circ}.5 \leq b \leq +0\overset{^\circ}.5$, in 19 equal sized fields with consecutive Galactic longitudes which cover the interval $90^\circ \leq l \leq 270^\circ$. Our results are constrained with respect to the solar space density ($D^*=5.95$), which indicates that the radial variation of the density is lower for higher Galactocentric distances. The scale-length of the thin disc is 2 kpc for the fields in the Galactic anticentre direction or close to this direction, while it decreases continuously in the second and third quadrants reaching to a lower limit of $h$ = 1.6 kpc at the Galactic longitudes $l$ = 90$^\circ$ and $l$ = 270$^\circ$. The distribution of the scale-length in 19 fields is consistent with the predictions from the Galaxia model and its variation with longitude is probably due to the inhomogeneity structure of the disc caused by the accreted material or other features such as warp and flare., Comment: 12 pages, including 5 figures and 2 tables, accepted for publication in PASA

Kinematical properties of CVs were investigated according to population types and orbital periods, using the space velocities computed from recently updated systemic velocities, proper motions and parallaxes. Reliability of collected space velocity data are refined by removing 34 systems with largest space velocity errors. The 216 CVs in the refined sample were shown to have a dispersion of $53.70 \pm 7.41$ km s$^{-1}$ corresponding to a mean kinematical age of $5.29 \pm 1.35$ Gyr. Population types of CVs were identified using their Galactic orbital parameters. According to the population analysis, seven old thin disc, nine thick disc and one halo CV were found in the sample, indicating that 94% of CVs in the Solar Neighbourhood belong to the thin-disc component of the Galaxy. Mean kinematical ages $3.40 \pm 1.03$ and $3.90 \pm 1.28$ Gyr are for the non-magnetic thin-disc CVs below and above the period gap, respectively. There is not a meaningful difference between the velocity dispersions below and above the gap. Velocity dispersions of the non-magnetic thin-disc systems below and above the gap are $24.95 \pm 3.46$ and $26.60 \pm 4.18$ km s$^{-1}$, respectively. This result is not in agreement with the standard formation and evolution theory of CVs. The mean kinematical ages of the CV groups in various orbital period intervals increase towards shorter orbital periods. This is in agreement with the standard theory for the evolution of CVs. The mass-luminosity (M-L), mass-radius (M-R) and mass-effective temperature ($M-T_{eff}$) diagrams for a subset of galactic nearby main-sequence stars with masses and radii accurate to $\leq 3\%$ and luminosities accurate to $\leq 30\%$ (268 stars) has led to a putative discovery. Four distinct mass domains have been identified, which we have tentatively associated with low, intermediate, high, and very high mass main-sequence stars, but which nevertheless are clearly separated by three distinct break points at 1.05, 2.4, and 7$M_{\odot}$ within the mass range studied of $0.38-32M_{\odot}$. Further, a revised mass-luminosity relation (MLR) is found based on linear fits for each of the mass domains identified. The revised, mass-domain based MLRs, which are classical ($L \propto M^{\alpha}$), are shown to be preferable to a single linear, quadratic or cubic equation representing as an alternative MLR. Stellar radius evolution within the main-sequence for stars with $M>1M_{\odot}$ is clearly evident on the M-R diagram, but it is not the clear on the $M-T_{eff}$ diagram based on published temperatures. Effective temperatures can be calculated directly using the well-known Stephan-Boltzmann law by employing the accurately known values of M and R with the newly defined MLRs. With the calculated temperatures, stellar temperature evolution within the main-sequence for stars with $M>1M_{\odot}$ is clearly visible on the $M-T_{eff}$ diagram. Our study asserts that it is now possible to compute the effective temperature of a main-sequence star with an accuracy of $\sim 6\%$, as long as its observed radius error is adequately small (<1%) and its observed mass error is reasonably small (<6%)., Comment: 57 pages, including 12 figures and 7 tables, accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal

We improved the classical mass-luminosity relation based on the database of DBs by Eker et al. (2004a).
