2. Lean Production Systems 4.0: systematic literature review and field study on the digital transformation of lean methods and tools.

Abstract

Lean Production Systems are enterprise-specific, methodical frameworks for the continuous orientation of all enterprise processes to the customer in order to achieve overall objectives. Due to an increasing complexity of the digital transformation, the design of Lean Production Systems 4.0 is a challenging task for industrial engineering practice. For this, academia and industrial practice were analysed in a combined approach of a systematic literature review and a field study. The systematic literature review of 62 out of 1600 scientific papers shows that especially the tools, processes, and methods in Lean Production Systems are subject to digital transformation. By involving industrial practice in a field study, quantitative and qualitative insights were used to check scientific hypotheses and identify practical requirements by industrial engineers. As a result, 10 guidelines for the design of future Lean Production Systems 4.0 are derived. 3. Iterative channel theoretic analysis for the identification of relationships of interest in complex environments : building up a matching framework for smart manufacturing

Abstract

Finding relationships between two or more different sets of things is a common challenge in research and daily life. The mathematically rigorous theory of Information Flow, also known as Channel Theory put forward by Barwise and Seligman in 1997, deals with the identification and formulation of informational relationships among components of a distributed system whereby the behaviour of such a system can be well understood. This thesis presents a novel approach to the application of Channel Theory in complex situations and its implementation. The core of this approach is an iterative Channel theoretic analysis for the identification of relationships of interest. This analysis is based on an understanding of how complex situations can be handled and on using ontologies and description logic to build the main components of an IF framework. The latter is also proved to be an effective means of constructing information channels for tackling complex situations. The proposed approach and associated methodology can be used in the application area of manufacturing where the current movement of smart manufacturing seeks for means that are able to support a certain degree of self-organisation and autonomy of future production systems. This research work contributes towards this goal by showing how a matching framework based on the presented novel approach for the application of Channel Theory can be built both theoretically and practically to support production systems in the complex task of equipment selection for a specific production step. A comprehensive literature review about the state of the art in the application of Channel Theory showed that Channel Theory had not been applied in complex environments like the manufacturing domain until this project started. Furthermore, an attempt to apply Channel Theory in this application field according to the state of the art approaches for the application of Information Flow showed that these approaches are not able to address the high complexity in this application area adequately. Based on this observation and an investigation of the essence of complex environments, a methodology for the application of Channel Theory was developed, which iteratively constructs information channels on several layers of abstraction to tame the complexity in the matching process of finding suitable production equipment for a specific production step. After successfully constructing this theoretical matching framework in the context of the equipment selection process, a generalisation of this methodology was elaborated to show that this way of applying Channel Theory has universal characteristics. That universality enables the methodology to be used in any complex application scenario where relationships between two sets of things have to be identified as long as the application scenario can be modelled hierarchically. Finally, the proposed methodology and its components were transformed into a prototypical design and implementation of an IF matching framework demonstrating that the used Semantic Web technologies and service-oriented architecture are perfectly suitable to build up such an IF matching framework.

In diesem Beitrag wird ein systematischer Ansatz für das Management des ausführbaren Teils von GPS 4.0 vorgestellt: ein Methoden- und Werkzeugkatalog. Diese Toolbox Lean 4.0 wurde als Datenbank mit mehreren hundert Elementen aus relevanten Quellen prototypisch implementiert und bietet eine Systematik zur Unterstützung des Industrial Engineering.

Abstract

The emergence of cyber-physical systems (CPS), cyber-physical production systems and smart products is fundamentally changing the approach to product development. The paper addresses the current challenges in the development and design of product innovations arising from the emergence of cyber-physical systems, cyber-physical production systems and smart products, and the resulting opportunities. To provide a basic overview of the existing challenges, results from studies, scientific publications and experiences from industry are described. These results from industry are obtained from project work with a globally operating German manufacturing company. In the course of these challenges, companies must reorient themselves in terms of their products, services and find their role in changing ecosystems. The aim is to show the extent to these challenges addressed in science and the state of the art. One approach to address these challenges is described in this paper using the technical concept of the asset administration shell (AAS) and the CRISPDM methodology. The goal is to provide insights in the early stages of product creation to drive incremental innovation or product improvement to facilitate the development of successful CPS and smart products.

Apart from innovators and early adopters, industrial manufacturers are still looking for adequate guidance for the orientation, prioritization, and development of Industrie 4.0 initiatives. Case studies of best practices have proven beneficial for the identification of use cases in manufacturing companies. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to develop an orientation guide for Industrie 4.0 with best practice use cases structured into thematic categories of production system areas. The orientation guide gathers relevant use cases for the adaption in industrial implementations. As a first practical application, the guide will be rolled out in an international study to primarily support regional manufacturing companies from Germany in the development of own Industrie 4.0 use cases. Abstract

Digitalisation causes a fundamental change in industrial production and brings new challenges for which employees in the manufacturing industry must be trained. A simulation game developed by researchers of the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA supports this change process, from lean production to digitalisation in production through a game-based qualification. To evaluate how qualified employees are and to what extent they accept digital transformation, a quantitative survey was designed and filled out by the participants after each simulation game workshop. This paper aims to examine the mindset of different focus groups regarding their awareness of ongoing challenges concerning digital transformation. The survey results show that despite challenges due to the changes in production technologies and environments caused by Industry 4.0, the simulation game has generally contributed to a better understanding of the impact of digitalisation and the acceptance of the changes in production caused by the digital transformation. Abstract

The simulation game "Digitalised Production Control" was developed at Fraunhofer IPA to give participants an understanding of the digital transformation in production (Yesilyurt et al., 2019). The simulation game aims to show participants the transition from applied lean principles in production to a digitalised production. New technologies contribute to the realization of the target vision of digitalised production, but at the same time also lead to the constant transformation of this vision due to ongoing provision of new solutions. The simulation game is intended to raise participants' awareness of the ongoing challenges of the digital transformation and to give them insight into the practical utilization of new technologies. The first version of the simulation game has already proven itself and has been evaluated in detail by participants. (Draghici et al., 2019). In order to sufficiently address this constant change in the simulation game and to introduce the participants to the use of new technologies, an expansion of the game to include an artificial intelligence (AI) component will be implemented. AI is chosen as a new technology to be implemented to address the current demands of small and medium sized enterprises (SME) companies and to initiate further discussions in the workshop format. However, the framework conditions that the current game concept entails must still be considered. This paper indicates a systematic approach, for deriving a new concept integrating an AI use case that complements the existing concept. For deriving and choosing an adequate AI use case suitable to the simulation game, use cases conducted by Fraunhofer IPA in industry as well as a systematic literature review have been performed. The current scientific standard will also be explained in order to place the project in its proper context. The derived concept and the way it integrates into the existing simulation game are explained in this paper.
