We show that circularly polarized lasers create plasmas with long-lasting ring-shaped weakly relativistic momentum distributions which, in the presence of an ambient magnetic field, are prone to the electron cyclotron maser instability. Theoretical results and particle-in-cell simulations show that current laser technology can effectively induce field ionized tailored distribution functions and probe the electron cyclotron maser in controlled conditions, providing direct experimental evidence to coherent radiation processes driven by ring-shaped or Landau inverted momentum distributions of relevance in extreme astrophysical conditions.

Relativistic plasmas in strong electromagnetic fields exhibit distinct properties compared to classical plasmas. In astrophysical environments, such as neutron stars, white dwarfs, AGNs, and shocks, relativistic plasmas are pervasive and are expected to play a crucial role in the dynamics of these systems. Despite their significance, both experimental and theoretical studies of such plasmas have been limited. Here, we present the first ab initio high-resolution kinetic simulations of relativistic plasmas undergoing synchrotron cooling in a highly magnetized medium. Our results demonstrate that these plasmas spontaneously generate coherent linearly polarised radiation (independently of the electron/positron ratio), in a wide range of parameters, via the electron cyclotron maser instability, with radiative losses altering the saturation of this instability. This enables the plasma to continously amplify coherent radiation for significantly longer durations of time. These findings highlight fundamental differences in the behaviour of relativistic plasmas in strongly magnetized environments and align with astronomical phenomena, such as pulsar emission and Fast Radio Bursts.

Generic equilibria are derived for turbulent relaxing plasmas via an entropy-maximization procedure that accounts for the short-time conservation of certain collisionless invariants. The conservation of these collisionless invariants endows the system with a partial `memory' of its prior conditions, but is imperfect on long time scales due to the development of a turbulent cascade to small scales, which breaks the precise conservation of phase volume, making this memory imprecise. The equilibria are still determined by the short-time collisionless invariants, but the invariants themselves are driven to a universal form by the nature of the turbulence. This is numerically confirmed for the case of beam instabilities in one-dimensional electrostatic plasmas, where sufficiently strong turbulence appears to cause the distribution function of particle energies to develop a universal power-law tail, with exponent -2., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

We study how radiation reaction leads plasmas initially in kinetic equilibrium to develop features in momentum space, such as anisotropies and population inversion, resulting in a ring-shaped momentum distribution that can drive kinetic instabilities. We employ the Landau-Lifshiftz radiation reaction model for a plasma in a strong magnetic field, and we obtain the necessary condition for the development of population inversion, we show that isotropic Maxwellian and Maxwell-J\"uttner plasmas, with thermal temperature $T>m_e c^2/\sqrt{3}$, will develop a ring-like momentum distribution. The timescales and features for forming ring-shaped momentum distributions, the effect of collisions and non-uniform magnetic fields are disscussed, and compared with typical astrophysical and laboratory plasmas parameters. We present QUIJOTE intensity and polarization maps in four frequency bands centred around 11, 13, 17 and 19GHz, and covering approximately 29000 deg$^2$, including most of the Northern sky region. These maps result from 9000 h of observations taken between May 2013 and June 2018 with the first QUIJOTE instrument (MFI), and have angular resolutions of around $1^\circ$, and sensitivities in polarization within the range 35-40 $\mu$K per 1-degree beam, being a factor $\sim 2$-$4$ worse in intensity. We discuss the data processing pipeline employed, and the basic characteristics of the maps in terms of real space statistics and angular power spectra. A number of validation tests have been applied to characterise the accuracy of the calibration and the residual level of systematic effects, finding a conservative overall calibration uncertainty of 5%. We also discuss flux densities for four bright celestial sources (Tau A, Cas A, Cyg A and 3C274) which are often used as calibrators at microwave frequencies. The polarization signal in our maps is dominated by synchrotron emission. The distribution of spectral index values between the 11GHz and WMAP 23GHz map peaks at $\beta=-3.09$ with a standard deviation of 0.14. The measured BB/EE ratio at scales of $\ell=80$ is $0.26\pm 0.07$ for a Galactic cut $|b|>10^\circ$. We find a positive TE correlation for 11GHz at large angular scales ($\ell \lesssim 50$), while the EB and TB signals are consistent with zero in the multipole range $30 \lesssim \ell \lesssim 150$. Under the presence of strong electromagnetic fields and radiation reaction, plasmas develop anisotropic momentum distributions, characterized by a population inversion. This is a general property of collisionless plasmas when the radiation reaction force is taken into account. We study the case of a plasma in a strong magnetic field and demonstrate the development of ring momentum distributions. The timescales for ring formation are derived for this configuration. The analytical results for the ring properties and the timescales for ring formation are confirmed with particle-in-cell simulations. In this paper we propose a methodology for the efficient implementation of Machine Learning (ML)-based methods in particle-in-cell (PIC) codes, with a focus on Monte-Carlo or statistical extensions to the PIC algorithm. The presented approach allows for neural networks to be developed in a Python environment, where advanced ML tools are readily available to proficiently train and test them. Those models are then efficiently deployed within highly-scalable and fully parallelized PIC simulations during runtime. We demonstrate this methodology with a proof-of-concept implementation within the PIC code OSIRIS, where a fully-connected neural network is used to replace a section of a Compton scattering module. We demonstrate that the ML-based method reproduces the results obtained with the conventional method and achieves better computational performance. These results offer a promising avenue for future applications of ML-based methods in PIC, particularly for physics extensions where an ML-based approach can provide a higher performance increase., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

The new generation of CMB polarization experiments will reach limits of sensitivity never achieved before to detect the primordial B-mode signal. However, all these efforts will be futile if we lack a tight control of systematics. Here, we focus on the systematic that arises from the uncertainty on the calibration of polarization angles. Miscalibrated polarization angles induce a mixing of E- and B-modes that obscures the primordial B-mode signal. We introduce an iterative angular power spectra maximum likelihood-based method to calculate polarization angles from the multi-frequency signal. The basis behind this methodology grounds on nulling the EB power spectra. To simplify the likelihood, we assume that the rotation angles are small (<6 deg) and, the maximum likelihood solution for the rotation angles is obtained by applying an iterative process where the covariance matrix does not depend on the angles per iteration, i.e., the rotation angles are fixed to the estimated angles in the previous iteration. With these assumptions, we obtain an analytical linear system which leads to a very fast computational implementation. We show that with this methodology we are able to determine the rotation angle for each frequency with sufficiently good accuracy. To prove the latter point we perform component separation analyses using the parametric component separation method B-SeCRET with two different approaches. In the first approach we apply the B-SeCRET pipeline to the signal de-rotated with the estimation of the angles, while in the second, the rotation angles are treated as model parameters using the estimation of the angles as a prior information. We obtain that the rotation angles estimations improve after applying the second approach, and show that the systematic residuals due to the non-null calibration polarization angles are mitigated to the order of a 1% at the power spectrum level., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures, submitted to JCAP

Map-making is an important step for the data analysis of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments. It consists of converting the data, which are typically a long, complex and noisy collection of measurements, into a map, which is an image of the observed sky. We present in this paper a new map-making code named PICASSO (Polarization and Intensity CArtographer for Scanned Sky Observations), which was implemented to construct intensity and polarization maps from the Multi Frequency Instrument (MFI) of the QUIJOTE (Q-U-I Joint TEnerife) CMB polarization experiment. PICASSO is based on the destriping algorithm, and is suited to address specific issues of ground-based microwave observations, with a technique that allows the fit of a template function in the time domain, during the map-making step. This paper describes the PICASSO code, validating it with simulations and assessing its performance. For this purpose, we produced realistic simulations of the QUIJOTE-MFI survey of the northern sky (approximately $\sim 20,000\,$deg$^2$), and analysed the reconstructed maps with PICASSO, using real and harmonic space statistics. We show that, for this sky area, PICASSO is able to reconstruct, with high fidelity, the injected signal, recovering all the scales with $\ell>10$ in TT, EE and BB. The signal error is better than 0.001% at $20<\ell<200$. Finally, we validated some of the methods that will be applied to the real wide-survey data, like the detection of the CMB anisotropies via cross-correlation analyses. The interaction of ultraintense laser pulses with solids is largely affected by the plasma gradient at the vacuum-solid interface, which modifies the absorption and ultimately, controls the energy distribution function of heated electrons. A micrometer scale-length plasma has been predicted to yield a significant enhancement of the energy and weight of the fast electron population and to play a major role in laser-driven proton acceleration with thin foils. We report on recent experimental results on proton acceleration from laser interaction with foil targets at ultra-relativistic intensities. We show a three-fold increase of the proton cut-off energy when a micrometer scale-length pre-plasma is introduced by irradiation with a low energy femtosecond pre-pulse. Our realistic numerical simulations agree with the observed gain of the proton cut-off energy and confirm the role of stochastic heating of fast electrons in the enhancement of the accelerating sheath field.

We present ECLIPSE (Efficient Cmb poLarization and Intensity Power Spectra Estimator), an optimized implementation of the Quadratic Maximum Likelihood (QML) method for the estimation of the power spectra of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). This approach allows one to reduce significantly the computational costs associated to this technique, allowing to estimate the power spectra up to higher multipoles than previous implementations. In particular, for a resolution of $N_\mathrm{side}=64$, $\ell_{\mathrm{max}}=192$ and a typical Galactic mask, the number of operations can be reduced by approximately a factor of 1000 in a full analysis including intensity and polarization with respect to an efficient direct implementation of the method. In addition, if one is interested in studying only polarization, it is possible to obtain the power spectra of the E and B modes with a further reduction of computational resources without degrading the results. We also show that for experiments observing a small fraction of the sky, the Fisher matrix becomes singular and, in this case, the standard QML can not be applied. To solve this problem, we have developed a binned version of the method that is unbiased and of minimum variance. We also test the robustness of the QML estimator when the assumed fiducial model differs from that of the sky and show the performance of an iterative approach. Finally, we present a comparison of the results obtained by QML and a pseudo-$C_{\ell}$ estimator (NaMaster) for a next-generation satellite, showing that, as expected, QML produces significantly smaller errors at low multipoles. We present a comprehensive study of the regularity of the covariance matrix of a discretized field on the sphere. In a particular situation, the rank of the matrix depends on the number of pixels, the number of spherical harmonics, the symmetries of the pixelization scheme and the presence of a mask. Taking into account the above mentioned components, we provide analytical expressions that constrain the rank of the matrix. They are obtained by expanding the determinant of the covariance matrix as a sum of determinants of matrices made up of spherical harmonics. We investigate these constraints for five different pixelizations that have been used in the context of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data analysis: Cube, Icosahedron, Igloo, GLESP and HEALPix, finding that, at least in the considered cases, the HEALPix pixelization tends to provide a covariance matrix with a rank closer to the maximum expected theoretical value than the other pixelizations. The effect of the propagation of numerical errors in the regularity of the covariance matrix is also studied for different computational precisions, as well as the effect of adding a certain level of noise in order to regularize the matrix. In addition, we investigate the application of the previous results to a particular example that requires the inversion of the covariance matrix: the estimation of the CMB temperature power spectrum through the Quadratic Maximum Likelihood algorithm.
