1. Assessing the Impact of Alpha Particles on Thermal Confinement in JET D-T Plasmas through Global GENE-Tango Simulations

Abstract

The capability of the global, electromagnetic gyrokinetic GENE code interfaced with the transport Tango solver is exploited to address the impact of fusion alpha particles (in their dual role of fast particles and heating source) on plasma profiles and performance at JET in the discharges with the highest quasi-stationary peak fusion power during the DTE2 experimental campaigns. Employing radially global nonlinear electromagnetic GENE-Tango simulations, we compare results with/without alpha particles and alpha heating. Our findings reveal that alpha particles have a negligible impact on turbulent transport, with GENE-Tango converging to similar plasma profiles regardless of their inclusion as a kinetic species in GENE. On the other hand, alpha heating is found to contribute to the peaking of the electron temperature profiles, leading to a 1keV drop on the on-axis electron temperature when alpha heating is neglected in Tango. The minimal impact of alpha particles on turbulent transport in this JET discharge - despite this being the shot with the highest fusion output - is attributed to the low content of fusion alpha in this discharge. To assess the potential impact of alpha particles on turbulent transport in regimes with higher alpha particle density, as expected in ITER and fusion reactors, we artificially increased the alpha particle concentration to levels expected for ITER. By performing global nonlinear GENE standalone simulations, we found that increasing the alpha particle density beyond five times the nominal value lead to significant overall turbulence destabilization.

Abstract

Flux-tube gyrokinetic codes are widely used to simulate drift-wave turbulence in magnetic confinement devices. While a large number of studies show that flux-tube codes provide an excellent approximation for turbulent transport in medium-large devices, it still needs to be determined whether they are sufficient for modeling supra-thermal particle effects on core turbulence. This is called into question given the large temperature of energetic particles (EPs), which makes them hardly confined on a single flux-surface, but also due to the radially broad mode structure of energetic-particle-driven modes. The primary focus of this manuscript is to assess the range of validity of flux-tube codes in modeling fast ion effects by comparing radially global turbulence simulations with flux-tube results at different radial locations for realistic JET parameters using the gyrokinetic code GENE. To extend our study to a broad range of different plasma scenarios, this comparison is made for four different plasma regimes, which differ only by the profile of the ratio between the plasma kinetic and magnetic pressure. The latter is artificially rescaled to address the electrostatic limit and regimes with marginally stable, weakly unstable and strongly unstable fast ion modes. These energetic-particle-driven modes is identified as an AITG/KBAE via linear ORB5 and LIGKA simulations. It is found that the local flux-tube simulations can recover well the global results only in the electrostatic and marginally stable cases. When the AITG/KBAE becomes linearly unstable, the local approximation fails to correctly model the radially broad fast ion mode structure and the consequent global zonal patterns. According to this study, global turbulence simulations are likely required in regimes with linearly unstable AITG/KBAEs. In conditions with different fast ion-driven modes, these results might change.

Abstract

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is widely used for the technical assessment of standard and complex endovascular aortic interventions. Use of iodinated contrast in CBCT imaging might provide useful additional information; however, this also increases the procedural contrast dose, which may cause renal function deterioration, and the radiation exposure. We describe the technique and feasibility of carbon-dioxide (CO2)-enhanced CBCT for the technical assessment of standard and complex endovascular aortic repair. In our experience CO2-CBCT had no related adverse events and provided satisfactory imaging quality to assess endograft integrity, vessels patency, and was safely performed in case of severe chronic renal insufficiency.

Abstract

The recent progress in high-temperature superconductor technologies has led to the design and construction of SPARC, a compact tokamak device expected to reach plasma breakeven with up to $25$MW of external ion cyclotron resonant heating (ICRH) power. This manuscript presents local (flux-tube) and radially global gyrokinetic GENE (Jenko et al 2000 Phys. Plasmas {\bf 7} 1904) simulations for a reduced-field and current H-mode SPARC scenario showing that supra-thermal particles - generated via ICRH - strongly suppress ion-scale turbulent transport by triggering a fast ion-induced anomalous transport barrier (F-ATB). The trigger mechanism is identified as a wave-particle resonant interaction between the fast particle population and plasma micro-instabilities (Di Siena et al 2021 Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 125} 025002). By performing a series of global simulations employing different profiles for the thermal ions, we show that the fusion gain of this SPARC scenario could be substantially enhanced up to $\sim 80\%$ by exploiting this fast ion stabilizing mechanism. A study is also presented to further optimize the energetic particle profiles, thus possibly leading experimentally to an even more significant fusion gain.

Abstract

The Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) has been widely studied throughout its history as a way of optimizing routes by minimizing distances, and the issue of risk in VRP has been received less attention, which is essential to increase transport safety, to reduce accident costs and to improve delivery reliability. In this way, this paper aims to support decision makers to plan routes for a road freight company considering both, i.e. logistics cost and safety. An analytical approach based on statistics was developed in which official government data of accidents occurrences and data from cargo insurance companies were used to estimate the risk cost of routes using the Monte Carlo simulation. The Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP) was employed and logistics and risk costs were minimized by varying a specific safety level coefficient and the model generated solutions with safer routes, reducing risk cost by up to approximately 18%. The accidents probabilities and risk costs of each route represented values as expected and the main contributions of this paper is the applicability of the approach to support decision markers to choose routes considering safety and logistics costs, and to be a simple and adaptable methodology for any VRP model. In addition Knime Analytics Platform was also used to estimate the accidents probabilities and to simplify data exploration, analysis, visualization and interpretation.

Abstract

The aim is to describe the technical feasibility, early outcomes, and graft stability of the Excluder iliac branch endoprosthesis (W.L. Gore & Associates) used as an infrarenal abdominal bifurcated endograft in cases unsuitable for standard endovascular aortic repair. The technique was used in 13 cases with abdominal and/or iliac aneurysms (n = 6), occlusive disease (n = 3), or complex aneurysms in association with a proximal fenestrated/branched endograft (n = 4). Technical success was 100%, and there were no adverse events, with 100% graft stability at 3 months. This case series demonstrates, in extremely selected cases, the feasibility and safety of Excluder iliac branch endoprosthesis used as an infrarenal aortic bifurcated device.

14. Pharmacoutilization and adherence to sacubitril/valsartan in real world: the REAL.IT study in HFrEF

Abstract

Abstract Aims The current European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines provide clear indications for the treatment of acute and chronic heart failure (HF). Nevertheless, there is a constant need for real‐world evidence regarding the effectiveness, adherence, and persistence of drug therapy. We investigated the use of sacubitril/valsartan for the treatment of HF with reduced ejection fraction in real‐world clinical practice in Italy. Methods and results An observational, retrospective, non‐interventional cohort study based on electronic medical records from nine specialized hospital HF centres in Italy was carried out on patients with prescription of sacubitril/valsartan. Overall, 948 patients had a prescription of sacubitril/valsartan, with 924 characterized over 6 months and followed up for 12 months. Pharmacoutilization data at 1 year of follow‐up were available for 225 patients {mean age 69.7 years [standard deviation (SD) = 10.8], 81.8% male}. Of those, 398 (45.2%) reached the target dose of sacubitril/valsartan of 97/103 mg in a mean time of 6.9 (SD = 6.2) weeks. Blood pressure and hypotension in 61 patients (65%) and worsening of chronic kidney disease in 10 patients (10.6%) were the main reasons for not reaching the target dose. Approximatively 50% of patients had a change in sacubitril/valsartan dose during follow‐up, and 158 (70.2%) were persistent with the treatment during the last 3 months of follow‐up. A sensitivity analysis (persistence during the last 4 months of follow‐up) showed persistence for 162 patients (72.0%). Adherence data, available for 387 patients, showed full adherence for 205 (53%). Discontinuation (102/717 patients, 14.2%) was mainly due to hypotension and occurred after a mean time of 34.3 (SD = 28.7) weeks. During follow‐up, out of 606 patients with available data, 434 patients (71.6%) had an HF add‐on drug or drugs concomitant with sacubitril/valsartan. HF‐related hospitalization during follow‐up was numerically higher in non‐persistent (16/67 patients, 23.9%) vs. patients persistent to sacubitril/valsartan (30/158, 19%) (P = 0.405). Conclusions Real‐world data on the use of sacubitril/valsartan in clinical practice in Italy show a rapid titration to the target dose, high therapeutic adherence enabling a good level of therapeutic management in line with ESC guidelines for patients with reduced ejection fraction.

16. Core transport barriers induced by fast ions in global gyrokinetic GENE simulations

Abstract

A novel type of internal transport barrier (ITB) called F-ATB (fast ion-induced anomalous transport barrier) has been recently observed in state-of-the-art global gyrokinetic simulations on a properly optimized ASDEX Upgrade experiment [A. Di Siena et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 127} 025002 (2021)]. Unlike the transport barriers previously reported in literature, the trigger mechanism for the F-ATB is a basically electrostatic wave-particle resonant interaction between supra-thermal particles - generated via ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) - and ion scale plasma turbulence. This resonant effect strongly depends on the particular shape of the fast ion temperature and density profiles. Therefore, to further improve our theoretical understanding of this transport barrier, we present results exploring the parameter space and physical conditions for the F-ATB generation by performing a systematic study with global GENE simulations. Particular emphasis is given to the transport barrier width and its localization by scanning over different energetic particle temperature profiles. The latter are varied in amplitude, half-width, and radial localization of an ad-hoc Gaussian-like energetic particle logarithmic temperature gradient profile. For the reference parameters at hand, a threshold in the amplitude of the fast ion logarithmic temperature gradient is identified to trigger the transport barrier effectively.

Abstract

BackgroundHeart failure (HF) significantly affects the morbidity, mortality, and quality of life of patients. New therapeutic strategies aim to improve the functional capacity and quality of life of patients while controlling HF-related risks. Real-world data on both the functional and cardiopulmonary exercise capacities of patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction upon sacubitril/valsartan use are lacking.MethodsA multicenter, retrospective, cohort study, called REAL.IT, was performed based on the data collected from the electronic medical records of nine specialized HF centers in Italy. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing was performed at baseline and after 12 months of sacubitril/valsartan therapy, monitoring carbon dioxide production (VCO2) and oxygen consumption (VO2).ResultsThe functional capacities of 170 patients were evaluated. The most common comorbidities were hypertension and diabetes (i.e., 53.5 and 32.4%, respectively). Abstract

Abstract Background During the COVID-19 pandemic, accesses to pediatric health care services decreased, as well as the consumption of traditional drugs, while the median cost per patient at the emergency department slightly increased and the cost of pediatric COVID-19 admissions to the pediatric ward too. Overall spending of a secondary level Pediatric Unit in the last two years has not been previously reported. Methods This is a retrospective study conducted by the Pediatric Unit of S. Chiara Hospital of Trento, North of Italy. We collected data on consumption and spending before and during the COVID-19 pandemic (between January 2018 and December 2022). Results The total spending ranged from 2.141.220 to 2.483.931 euros between 2018 and 2022. COVID-19 spending accounted only for 5–8% of the overall budget, while two macro-areas of spending were identified: (i) biologic drugs for inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs), that impacted for 35.4–41.3%, and (ii) technology devices for type 1 diabetes (T1D), that accounted for 41.6–32.8% of the overall budget, in 2021 and 2022, respectively. Analysis of costs along with the different health care services revealed that: (i) the spending for COVID-19 antigen tests and personal protective equipment had a major impact on the Emergency room budget (from 54 to 68% in the two years); (ii) biological drugs accounted mainly on the Pediatric Ward (for 57%), Day Hospital (for 74%) and rare disease center budget (for 95% of the spending); (iii) the cost for T1D devices was mainly due to continuous glucose monitoring, and impacted for the 97% of the outpatient clinic budget. Conclusions The main impact on the budget was not due to COVID-19 pandemic related costs, but to the costs for biologic drugs and T1D devices. Therefore, cost savings could be mainly achieved through generic and biosimilars introduction and with inter-regionals calls for technology devices. We emphasize how the control of spending in pediatric hospital care has probably moved from the bedside (savings on traditional drugs as antibiotics) to the bench of national or inter-regional round tables, to obtain discounts on the costs of biologic drugs and medical devices. Here we provide for the first-time in literature, data for bench-marking between secondary level Pediatric Units before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

The key result of the present work is the theoretical prediction and observation of the formation of a new type of transport barrier in fusion plasmas, called F-ATB (fast ion-induced anomalous transport barrier). As demonstrated through state-of-the-art global electrostatic and electromagnetic simulations, the F-ATB is characterized by a full suppression of the turbulent transport - caused by strongly sheared, axisymmetric $E \times B$ flows - and an increase of the neoclassical counterpart, albeit keeping the overall fluxes at significantly reduced levels. The trigger mechanism is shown to be a mainly electrostatic resonant interaction between supra-thermal particles, generated via ion-cyclotron-resonance heating, and plasma micro-turbulence. Abstract

We present novel roulette schemes for rare-event sampling that are both structure-preserving and unbiased. The boundaries where Monte Carlo markers are split and deleted are placed automatically and adapted during runtime. Extending existing codes with the new schemes is possible without severe changes because the equation of motion for the markers is not altered. These schemes can also be applied in the presence of nonlinear and nonlocal coupling between markers. As an illustrative application, we have implemented this method in the ASCOT-RFOF code, used to simulate fast-ion generation by radio-frequency waves in fusion plasmas. In this application, with this method the Monte-Carlo noise level for typical fast-ion energies can be reduced at least of one order of magnitude without increasing the computational effort.

Abstract

We describe the feasibility of a technique for temporary aneurysm sac reperfusion after endovascular single-stage thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm exclusion, to be used in the case of postoperative spinal cord ischemia. Two cases were treated for impending rupture of a thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm. Before completion of sac exclusion, a supplementary buddy wire (V-18 control guidewire; Boston Scientific) was advanced in parallel fashion from the left percutaneous femoral access into the aneurysmal sac on the posterior aspect of the endograft. Distal aneurysm exclusion was completed using the main superstiff guidewire, and the femoral access was closed with a percutaneous closure device (ProGlide; Abbott) in standard fashion, leaving in place the sole V-18 guidewire, draped in sterile fashion. In the case of spinal cord ischemia, the “safe-line” can be rapidly used for spinal reperfusion after trans-sealing exchange with a 6F, 65-cm-long Destination sheath (Terumo) connected to a 6F introducer on the contralateral femoral artery.

Abstract

Advanced Tokamak (AT) scenarios are attractive candidates for future nuclear fusion power plants. These scenarios often feature peaked temperature profiles, suggesting a local reduction of turbulent transport. The mechanisms behind this are, as yet, not fully understood. Parameters that are thought to be connected to these transport reductions include the q -profile and the E × B -shear $\omega_{E\times B}$ . Another parameter considered to be important is the fast ion content, which can reduce transport in multiple different ways. This work presents AT experiments performed at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak (AUG) in which these three parameters are varied to investigate their respective effect on the observed peaked ion temperature profiles. To disentangle potentially competing effects, simulations using the codes GENE and TGLF have been performed. It is found that the E × B -shear does not play a role in the AT scenarios performed at AUG, which have relatively low rotation, with $v_\mathrm{tor} = 100-250\,$ km h ^−1 . Experimentally, a significant dependence of $\smash{{\raise2.8pt\hbox{$\small\begin{array}{@{}l@{}}{{{R}}}\end{array}$}}}\!\!/\!\smash{{\raise-2.3pt\hbox{$\small\begin{array}{@{}l@{}}{L_{T_\mathrm{i}}}\end{array}$}}}$ on the electron cyclotron current drive settings was found, indicating that either the current profile (and, therefore, the q -profile) or $\smash{{\raise2.8pt\hbox{$\small\begin{array}{@{}l@{}}{{Te}}\end{array}$}}}\!\!/\!\smash{{\raise-2.3pt\hbox{$\small\begin{array}{@{}l@{}}{{Ti}}\end{array}$}}}$ has a significant impact on the observed suppression of turbulent transport. In support of the first option, both GENE and TGLF show a q -profile dependence of $\smash{{\raise2.8pt\hbox{$\small\begin{array}{@{}l@{}}{{{R}}}\end{array}$}}}\!\!/\!\smash{{\raise-2.3pt\hbox{$\small\begin{array}{@{}l@{}}{L_{T_\mathrm{i}}}\end{array}$}}}$ . Furthermore, according to GENE, electromagnetic (EM) fast ion effects are essential in reproducing the experimental results. Scans with TGLF (which does not include such effects), suggest that these fast ion effects become relevant above a threshold of $\smash{{\raise2.8pt\hbox{$\small\begin{array}{@{}l@{}}{{{R}}}\end{array}$}}}\!\!/\!\smash{{\raise-2.3pt\hbox{$\small\begin{array}{@{}l@{}}{L_{T_\mathrm{i}}}\end{array}$}}} = $ 4–5. In the presence of ICRF, additional electrostatic (ES) fast ion effects seem to come into effect, according to GENE, albeit to a smaller degree than the EM effects.

Abstract

The Doppler-shifted resonance condition for high frequency Alfvénic eigenmodes has been extensively studied on ASDEX Upgrade in the presence of one or a combination of two neutral beam injected (NBI) fast ion populations. In general, only centrally deposited NBI sources drive these modes, while off-axis sources globally stabilize the mode activity. For the case of a single central NBI source, the observed trend is: the highest frequency modes are driven by the lowest energy and lowest pitch angle NBI sources, in line with the expectation from the Doppler-shifted resonance condition. The expected mode frequencies are determined analytically from the two-fluid cold plasma dispersion relation and the most unstable frequency relation, while the mode growth rates are estimated using the fast ion slowing down distribution functions from the ASCOT code. The overall mode frequency trend in a source-to-source variation is tracked, although a systematic overestimate of ∼1 MHz is observed. Possible causes of this overestimate include the finite size of the resonant fast ion drift orbit and non-linear effects such as mode sideband formation. Alternatively, the expected mode frequencies are determined by tracking the growth rate maxima trajectories, this method improves the agreement with the experimentally measured values. A combination of two central mode-driving NBI sources results in the suppression of the mode driven by the lowest energy and the lowest pitch angle NBI source. Computing the analytically expected mode frequency following the method outlined above, again, generally tracks the experimentally observed trend. The mode’s Alfvénic nature allows for a practical application to track the core hydrogen fraction by following the mode frequency changes in response to a varying ion mass density. Such application is demonstrated in a discharge where the average ion mass is varied from ∼2 m _p to ∼1.5 m _p (where m _p is the proton mass) via a hydrogen puff in a deuterium plasma, in the presence of a strong mode activity. The expected mode frequency changes are computed from the existence of the resonance condition, and the values track the measured results with an offset of ∼0.5 MHz. Overall, the results suggest an intriguing possibility to monitor and control the D-T ion fraction in the core of a fusion reactor in real time using a non-invasive diagnostic.

Abstract

Experiments on ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) in 2021 and 2022 have addressed a number of critical issues for ITER and EU DEMO. A major objective of the AUG programme is to shed light on the underlying physics of confinement, stability, and plasma exhaust in order to allow reliable extrapolation of results obtained on present day machines to these reactor-grade devices. Concerning pedestal physics, the mitigation of edge localised modes (ELMs) using resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) was found to be consistent with a reduction of the linear peeling-ballooning stability threshold due to the helical deformation of the plasma. Conversely, ELM suppression by RMPs is ascribed to an increased pedestal transport that keeps the plasma away from this boundary. Candidates for this increased transport are locally enhanced turbulence and a locked magnetic island in the pedestal. The enhanced D-alpha (EDA) and quasi-continuous exhaust (QCE) regimes have been established as promising ELM-free scenarios. Here, the pressure gradient at the foot of the H-mode pedestal is reduced by a quasi-coherent mode, consistent with violation of the high-n ballooning mode stability limit there. This is suggestive that the EDA and QCE regimes have a common underlying physics origin. In the area of transport physics, full radius models for both L- and H-modes have been developed. These models predict energy confinement in AUG better than the commonly used global scaling laws, representing a large step towards the goal of predictive capability. A new momentum transport analysis framework has been developed that provides access to the intrinsic torque in the plasma core. In the field of exhaust, the X-Point Radiator (XPR), a cold and dense plasma region on closed flux surfaces close to the X-point, was described by an analytical model that provides an understanding of its formation as well as its stability, i.e., the conditions under which it transitions into a deleterious MARFE with the potential to result in a disruptive termination. With the XPR close to the divertor target, a new detached divertor concept, the compact radiative divertor, was developed. Here, the exhaust power is radiated before reaching the target, allowing close proximity of the X-point to the target. No limitations by the shallow field line angle due to the large flux expansion were observed, and sufficient compression of neutral density was demonstrated. With respect to the pumping of non-recycling impurities, the divertor enrichment was found to mainly depend on the ionisation energy of the impurity under consideration. In the area of MHD physics, analysis of the hot plasma core motion in sawtooth crashes showed good agreement with nonlinear 2-fluid simulations. This indicates that the fast reconnection observed in these events is adequately described including the pressure gradient and the electron inertia in the parallel Ohm’s law. Concerning disruption physics, a shattered pellet injection system was installed in collaboration with the ITER International Organisation. Thanks to the ability to vary the shard size distribution independently of the injection velocity, as well as its impurity admixture, it was possible to tailor the current quench rate, which is an important requirement for future large devices such as ITER. Progress was also made modelling the force reduction of VDEs induced by massive gas injection on AUG. The H-mode density limit was characterised in terms of safe operational space with a newly developed active feedback control method that allowed the stability boundary to be probed several times within a single discharge without inducing a disruptive termination. Regarding integrated operation scenarios, the role of density peaking in the confinement of the ITER baseline scenario (high plasma current) was clarified. The usual energy confinement scaling ITER98( p,y ) does not capture this effect, but the more recent H20 scaling does, highlighting again the importance of developing adequate physics based models. Advanced tokamak scenarios, aiming at large non-inductive current fraction due to non-standard profiles of the safety factor in combination with high normalised plasma pressure were studied with a focus on their access conditions. A method to guide the approach of the targeted safety factor profiles was developed, and the conditions for achieving good confinement were clarified. Based on this, two types of advanced scenarios (‘hybrid’ and ‘elevated’ q -profile) were established on AUG and characterised concerning their plasma performance.

Abstract

Conventionally, neutral beam injection (NBI) in tokamaks is controlled via engineering parameters such as injection voltage and power. Recently, the high-fidelity real-time NBI code RABBIT has been coupled to the discharge control system of ASDEX Upgrade. It allows to calculate the NBI fast-ion distribution and hence the properties of NBI in real-time, making it possible to control them directly. We successfully demonstrate control of driven current, ion heating and stored fast-ion energy by modifying the injected beam power. A combined ECRH and NBI controller is also successfully tested, which is able to adjust the heating mix between ECRH and NBI to match a certain desired ion heating fraction at given total power. Further experiments have been carried out towards control of the ion heat flux (i.e. ion heating plus collisional heat transfer between ions and electrons). They show good initial success, but also leave room for future improvements as the controller runs into instabilities at too high requests.

Abstract

Within the 9th European Framework programme, since 2021 EUROfusion is operating five tokamaks under the auspices of a single Task Force called ‘Tokamak Exploitation’. The goal is to benefit from the complementary capabilities of each machine in a coordinated way and help in developing a scientific output scalable to future largre machines. The programme of this Task Force ensures that ASDEX Upgrade, MAST-U, TCV, WEST and JET (since 2022) work together to achieve the objectives of Missions 1 and 2 of the EUROfusion Roadmap: i) demonstrate plasma scenarios that increase the success margin of ITER and satisfy the requirements of DEMO and, ii) demonstrate an integrated approach that can handle the large power leaving ITER and DEMO plasmas. The Tokamak Exploitation task force has therefore organized experiments on these two missions with the goal to strengthen the physics and operational basis for the ITER baseline scenario and for exploiting the recent plasma exhaust enhancements in all four devices (PEX: Plasma EXhaust) for exploring the solution for handling heat and particle exhaust in ITER and develop the conceptual solutions for DEMO. The ITER Baseline scenario has been developed in a similar way in ASDEX Upgrade, TCV and JET. Key risks for ITER such as disruptions and run-aways have been also investigated in TCV, ASDEX Upgrade and JET. Experiments have explored successfully different divertor configurations (standard, super-X, snowflakes) in MAST-U and TCV and studied tungsten melting in WEST and ASDEX Upgrade. The input from the smaller devices to JET has also been proven successful to set-up novel control schemes on disruption avoidance and detachment.

Abstract

Combining the analysis of multiple diagnostics and well-chosen prior information in the framework of Bayesian probability theory, the Integrated Data Analysis code (IDA Fischer et al 2010 Fusion Sci. Technol. 58 675–84) can provide density and temperature radial profiles of fusion plasmas. These IDA-fitted measurements are then used for further analysis, such as discharge simulations and other experimental data analysis. Since IDA considers measurement data, which is frequently fragmentary, with statistical and systematic uncertainties, which are often difficult to quantify, from a heterogeneous set of diagnostics, the fitted profiles and their gradients may be in contradiction to well-established expectations from transport theory. Using the modeling suite ASTRA coupled with the quasi-linear transport solver TGLF, we have created a loop in which simulated profiles and their uncertainties are fed back into IDA as an additional prior, thus providing constraints about the physically reasonable parameter space. We apply this physics-motivated prior to several different plasma scenarios and find improved heat flux match, while still matching the experimental data. This work feeds into a broader effort to make IDA more robust against measurement uncertainties or lack of measurements by combining multiple transport solvers with different levels of complexity and computing costs in a multi-fidelity approach.

Abstract

In 2021 JET exploited its unique capabilities to operate with T and D–T fuel with an ITER-like Be/W wall (JET-ILW). This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

The current response of a hot magnetized plasma to a radio-frequency wave is non-local, turning the electromagnetic wave equation into an integro-differential equation. Non-local physics gives rise to wave physics and absorption processes not observed in local media. Furthermore, non-local physics alters wave propagation and absorption properties of the plasma. In this work, an iterative method that accounts for parallel non-local effects in 2D axisymmetric tokamak plasmas is developed, implemented, and verified. The iterative method is based on the finite element method and Fourier decomposition, with the advantage that this numerical scheme can describe non-local effects while using a high-fidelity antenna and wall representation, as well as limiting memory usage. The proposed method is implemented in the existing full wave solver FEMIC and applied to a minority heating scenario in ITER to quantify how parallel non-local physics affect wave propagation and dissipation in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF). The effects are then compared to a reduced local plane wave model, both verifying the physics implemented in the model, as well as estimating how well a local plane wave approximation performs in scenarios with high single pass damping. Finally, the new version of FEMIC is benchmarked against the ICRF code TORIC.

Abstract

Since the last IAEA-FEC in 2021, significant progress on the development of long pulse steady state scenario and its related key physics and technologies have been achieved, including the reproducible 403 s long-pulse steady-state H-mode plasma with pure radio frequency (RF) power heating. A thousand-second time scale (∼1056 s) fully non-inductive plasma with high injected energy up to 1.73 GJ has also been achieved. The EAST operational regime of high β _P has been significantly extended ( H _98y2 > 1.3, β _P ∼ 4.0, β _N ∼ 2.4 and n _e / n _GW ∼ 1.0) using RF and neutral beam injection (NBI). The full edge localized mode suppression using the n = 4 resonant magnetic perturbations has been achieved in ITER-like standard type-I ELMy H-mode plasmas with q _95 ≈ 3.1 on EAST, extrapolating favorably to the ITER baseline scenario. The sustained large ELM control and stable partial detachment have been achieved with Ne seeding. The underlying physics of plasma-beta effect for error field penetration, where toroidal effect dominates, is disclosed by comparing the results in cylindrical theory and MARS-Q simulation in EAST. Abstract

This paper presents global gyrokinetic simulations on the transport time scale of an ASDEX Upgrade H-mode discharge showing a pronounced peaking of the on-axis ion temperature profiles. Leveraging the newly developed GENE-Tango tool, which combines the global gyrokinetic code GENE with the transport solver Tango, we investigate the impact of energetic particles and electromagnetic effects on the improved plasma performance observed in the experimental discharge. Our results reveal that a striking agreement between the GENE-Tango simulations and the experimental measurements can be achieved only when energetic particles and electromagnetic effects are simultaneously retained in the modeling. In contrast, when these are neglected we observed a significant underestimation of the on-axis ion temperature, aligning with profiles computed using TGLF-ASTRA. The peaking in the ion temperature profile observed in the simulations can be attributed to the effective suppression of turbulence by high-frequency electromagnetic modes, likely Kinetic Ballooning Modes/Alfvén eigenmodes. These modes play a critical role in enhancing zonal flow activity and shearing rate levels which thus lead to a localized increase in the temperature gradient. However, it is crucial to maintain these modes at a state of marginal stability or weak instability to prevent energetic particle turbulence destabilization. Otherwise, the result would be a flattening of all the thermal profiles. Interestingly, we found that global GENE-Tango simulations are required to model correctly the linear dynamics of these high-frequency modes. Additionally, global simulations demonstrate greater tolerance than flux-tube simulations for marginal instability of these high frequency modes while maintaining power balance agreement.
