We develop a theory describing neutral atoms scattering at low energies in an optical lattice. We show that for a repulsive interaction, as the microscopic scattering length increases, the effective scattering amplitude approaches a limiting value which depends only on the lattice parameters. In the case of attractive interaction a geometric resonance occurs before reaching this limit. Close to the resonance, the effective interaction becomes repulsive and supports a weakly bound state, which can extend over several lattice sites., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, RevTeX

We present a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation that describes also the dissipative dynamics of a trapped partially Bose condensed gas. It takes the form of a complex nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with noise. We consider an approximation to this Langevin field equation that preserves the correct equilibrium for both the condensed and the noncondensed parts of the gas. We then use this formalism to describe the reversible formation of a one-dimensional Bose condensate, and compare with recent experiments. We study the dynamics of condensate formation in an inhomogeneous trapped Bose gas with a positive interatomic scattering length. We take into account both the nonequilibrium kinetics of the thermal cloud and the Hartree-Fock mean-field effects in the condensed and the noncondensed parts of the gas. Our growth equations are solved numerically by assuming that the thermal component behaves ergodically and that the condensate, treated within the Thomas-Fermi approximation, grows adiabatically. Our simulations are in good qualitative agreement with experiment, however important discrepancies concerning details of the growth behaviour remain., Comment: 28 pages, 11 figures. We consider a mixture of a single-component Bose gas and a two-component Fermi gas at temperatures where the Bose gas is almost fully condensed. In such a mixture, two fermionic atoms can interact with each other by exchanging a phonon that propagates through the Bose condensate. We calculate the interaction potential due to this mechanism and determine the effective s-wave scattering length for two fermions that interact, both directly by the interatomic potentials, as well as by the above mentioned exchange mechanism. We find that the effective scattering length is quite sensitive to changes in the condensate density and becomes strongly energy dependent. In addition, we consider the mechanical stability of these mixtures and also calculate the dispersion and the damping of the various collisionless collective modes of the gas., Comment: Corrected some typo's, made some changes to the figures and addes two new references

We consider scattering atoms from a fully Bose-Einstein condensed gas. If we take these atoms to be identical to those in the Bose-Einstein condensate, this scattering process is to a large extent analogous to Andreev reflection from the interface between a superconducting and a normal metal. We determine the scattering wave function both in the absence and the presence of a vortex. Our results show a qualitative difference between these two cases that can be understood as due to an Aharonov-Bohm effect. We calculate the excitation frequencies of the low-lying modes of a trapped Bose-condensed gas at nonzero temperatures. We include in our calculation the dynamics of the noncondensed cloud, and find agreement with experimental results if we assume that in the experiment both the in-phase and out-of-phase monopole modes are excited simultaneously. In order to explore whether this is indeed the correct explanation, we also calculate how strongly the modes couple to a perturbation of the external trapping potential., Comment: 9 pages of ReVTeX and 5 postscript figures. We calculate the excitation frequencies of the m=0 monopole and m=2 quadrupole modes in the collisionless regime by solving a non-linear Schroedinger equation for the condensate, coupled to a collisionless Boltzmann equation for the quasiparticles. Since the dynamics of the noncondensate cloud is also taken into account, the theory satisfies the Kohn theorem. We derive the hydrodynamic equations of motion of solid and supersolid 4He, that describe the collective modes of these phases. In particular, the usual hydrodynamics is modified in such a way that it leads to the presence of a propagating instead of a diffusive defect mode. The former is appropriate for a quantum crystal and observed in recent experiments. Furthermore, we find that in supersolid helium there are two additional modes associated with the superfluid degrees of freedom. We study the three-dimensional atomic Bose gas using renormalization group techniques. Using our knowledge of the microscopic details of the interatomic interaction, we determine the correct initial values of our renormalization group equations and thus obtain also information on nonuniversal properties. As a result, we can predict for instance the critical temperature of the gas and the superfluid and condensate density of the Bose-Einstein condensed phase in the regime $na\Lambda_{th}^2\ll 1$., Comment: 48 pages of ReVTeX and 13 postscript figures. Due to the observation of Bose-Einstein condensation in dilute atomic $^{87}$Rb and $^{23}$Na vapors last year, there is currently a great interest in the properties of a degenerate Bose gas. One aspect that is not yet understood is the effect of the interatomic interactions on the critical temperature of the phase transition. We present here a renormalization group study of the weakly-interacting Bose gas and predict the critical temperature at which Bose-Einstein condensation occurs as a function of the (positive) scattering length $a$ of the interatomic potential., Comment: 10 pages of ReVTeX and 2 figures

We present a unified picture of the interaction effects in dilute atomic quantum gases. In this paper we derive an expression for the conserved Pauli-Lubanski scalar in 't Hooft's polygon approach to 2+1-dimensional gravity coupled to point particles. We find that it is represented by an extra spatial shift $\Delta$ in addition to the usual identification rule (being a rotation over the cut). We study the weakly-interacting Bose gas in both two and three dimensions using a variational approach. In particular we construct the thermodynamic potential of the gas to within ladder approximation and find by minimization an accurate mean-field description of the dilute Bose gas. Using spin-polarized atomic hydrogen as a specific example, we obtain an improved description of the Bose-Einstein condensed phase in three dimensions and a signature of a phase transition in two dimensions.
