Doxorubicin (DOX) is a commonly used antitumor drug. However, it may cause severe cardiotoxicity, apoptosis being a major change. A recent report indicates that miR-147 expression is decreased in the myocardium of a myocardial infarction model, suggesting a potential role of this miRNA in DOX-induced cardiomyocyte toxicity. In this study, freshly isolated neonatal pig cardiomyocytes were used; following transfection of a miR-147-y mimic, the cell death induced by DOX was alleviated, represented by augmented mitophagy [indicated by a decrease in P62, and increases in LC3, PINK1, parkin mRNA, LC3Ⅱ/Ⅰ, beclin-1, PINK1, and parkin including p-parkin (Ser65) protein expression], prohibited cell apoptosis as determined by TUNEL staining, and the suppression of caspase-3 transcription and cleaved caspase-3 translation. In cells transfected with an miR-147-y inhibitor, DOX-induced mitophagy was decreased, while apoptosis was increased. Additionally, RAPTOR gene silencing in cardiomyocytes exposed to DOX increased the rate of mitophagy and decreased that of apoptosis as compared with the treatment with DOX alone. Moreover, RAPTOR overexpression downregulated the rate of mitophagy and increased that of apoptosis in cells exposed to DOX. RAPTOR was confirmed as the target gene of miR-147-y based on the results of luciferase reporter gene assays and the opposite effects of the miR-147-y mimic and miR-147-y inhibitor on RAPTOR expression. In summary, our study suggests that miR-147-y mediates DOX-induced cardiomyocyte mitophagy while suppresses apoptosis by targeting RAPTOR, thus playing a protective role in DOX-induced cardiomyocyte damage.

How does China’s 2008 economic stimulus plan affect housing price through the channel of state-owned enterprises (SOEs)? Utilizing a sample of 206 Chinese cities and a different-in-difference approach, we show that the housing prices in cities with a higher prevalence of SOEs, tend to grow disproportionately faster than that in cities with lower prevalence of SOEs after the shock of 2008 China’s stimulus plan. The heterogeneity tests show that the SOE channel plays a more important role in cities with more city investment bonds, less financial development and lower level of marketization. Our conclusion is robust across a battery of sensitivity tests.

We aimed to conduct a comprehensive analysis by investigating whether incremental hemodialysis was simultaneously associated with adequate dialysis therapy, stable complication indicators, long-lasting arteriovenous vascular access, and long-lasting preservation of residual kidney function (RKF) without increasing mortality or hospitalization.Patients and Methods: Incident hemodialysis patients from Huashan Hospital in Shanghai, China, over the period of 2012 to 2019, were enrolled and followed every three months until death or the time of censoring. Changes in complication indicators from baseline to all post-baseline visits were analyzed by mixed-effects models. The outcomes of RKF loss, arteriovenous vascular access complications, and the composite of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events were compared between incremental and conventional hemodialysis by Cox proportional hazards model.Results: Of the 113 patients enrolled in the study, 45 underwent incremental and 68 conventional hemodialysis. There were no significant differences in the changes from baseline to post-baseline visits in complication indicators between the two groups. Incremental hemodialysis reduced the risks of RKF loss (HR, 0.33; 95% CI, 0.14– 0.82), de novo arteriovenous access complication (HR, 0.26; 95% CI, 0.08– 0.82), and recurrent arteriovenous access complications under the Andersen–Gill (AG) model (HR, 0.27; 95% CI, 0.10– 0.74) and the Prentice, Williams and Peterson Total Time (PWP-TT) model (HR, 0.31; 95% CI, 0.12– 0.80). There were no significant differences in all-cause hospitalization or the composite outcome between groups.Conclusion: Incremental hemodialysis is an effective dialysis transition strategy that preserves RKF and arteriovenous access without affecting dialysis adequacy, patient stability, hospitalization risk and mortality risk. The cytokine storm is highly associated with inflammatory-type disease severity and patients' survival. Plant polysaccharides, the main natural phytomedicine source, have a great potential to be an effective drug to treat cytokine storm. Herein we found that a polymeric acemannan (ABPA1) isolated from Aloe Vera Barbadensis extract C (AVBEC) exerted prominent inhibitory effects on inflammation-induced cytokine storm. The results displayed that ABPA1 effectively suppressed LPS-induced proinflammatory cytokines release in vitro. Moreover, ABPA1 treatment alleviated the cytokine storm and tissue damage in LPS- and IAV-induced mouse pneumonia models, and altered the phenotypic balance of macrophages in lung tissues. Functionally, ABPA1 enhanced macrophage M2 polarization and phagocytosis in RAW264.7 cells and inhibited LPS-induced M1 polarization. Mechanistically, ABPA1 enhanced mitochondrial metabolism and OXPHOS through activated PI3K/Akt/GSK-3β signalling pathway. Overall, our findings suggest that ABPA1 may modulate macrophage activation and mitochondrial metabolism by targeting PI3K/Akt/GSK-3β signalling pathway, thereby alleviating cytokine storm and inflammation.

Despite the explosive growth of peer-to-peer lending in China, information asymmetry remains a critical issue and is likely to be amplified in such an evolving credit market compared to a traditional credit market. This paper studies how investors screen the nonstandard and often unverifiable information disclosed voluntarily by the borrowers to make their investment decisions. Using data from Renrendai, one of the leading P2P lending platforms in China, we find that the amount of information disclosed voluntarily by the borrowers can significantly improve the funding probability. The impact is even more remarkable for the borrowers with lower credit rating. However, the loan default probability increases with the amount of disclosure, indicating the possibility of information manipulation by the borrowers. Further investigation shows the puzzle that lenders remain attracted by such loan listings can be explained by the higher profitability offered by the borrowers. SummaryThe COVID-19 pandemic and the SARS-CoV-2 with its variants have posed unprecedented challenges worldwide. Existing vaccines have limited effectiveness against the SARS-CoV-2 variants. Therefore, novel vaccines to match current mutated viral lineages with long-term protective immunity are urgently in demand. In the current study, we for the first time designed a recombinant Adeno-Associated Virus 5 (rAAV5)-based vaccine named as rAAV-COVID-19 vaccine (Covacinplus) by using RBD-plus of spike protein with both the single-stranded and the self-complementary AAV5 delivering vectors (ssAAV5 and scAAAV5), which provides excellent protection from SARS-CoV-2 infection. A single dose vaccination induced the strong immune response against SARS-CoV-2. The induced neutralizing antibodies (NAs) titers were maintained at a high peak level of over 1:1024 even after more than one year of injection and accompanied with functional T-cells responses in mice. Importantly, both ssAAV- and scAAV-based RBD-plus vaccines exhibited high levels of serum NAs against current circulating variants including variants Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta. SARS-CoV-2 virus challenge test showed that ssAAV5-RBD-plus vaccine protected both young and old age mice from SARS-CoV-2 infection in the upper and the lower respiratory tracts. Moreover, whole genome sequencing demonstrated that AAV vector DNA sequences were not found in the genome of the vaccinated mice after one year vaccination, demonstrating excellent safety of the vaccine. Taken together, this study suggests that rAAV5-based vaccine is powerful against SARS-CoV-2 and its variants with long-term protective immunity and excellent safety, which has great potential for development into prophylactic vaccination in human to end this global pandemic.

Secondary hyperparathyroidism may cause an increase in blood pressure among maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. The objective of this study were to observe the effects of different treatment modalities of hyperparathyroidism on blood pressure among MHD patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism.This retrospective cohort study was conducted on 69 patients divided into three groups, based on the therapeutic strategies (parathyroidectomy, n = 22; cinacalcet, n = 14; calcitriol, n = 33). Changes in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) from pre- to post-treatment visits at 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 12th month were analyzed by mixed-effects repeated-measures model. Serum levels of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) mediators (renin and aldosterone), endothelin, and echocardiography were compared before and after one year of treatment within the three groups.Changes in blood pressure were significantly different among the three groups (SBP: P for group0.05; DBP: P for group.05; both P for group × time interaction.05). SBP and DBP showed a significant downward trend in the surgery group (P for change in SBP.05, P for change in DBP.001, adjusted mean change of SBP = -12.16 (-19.70 to -4.62) mmHg and of DBP = -6.82 (-10.58 to -3.06) mmHg in the surgery group on the 12th month). Diastolic BP showed a significant upward trend in the cinacalcet group (P for change in DBP.05, adjusted mean change of DBP = 6.03 (2.08 to 9.98) mmHg in cinacalcet group in the 12th month). No significant change in BP was observed in the calcitriol group. The levels of serum RAS mediators, endothelin, or cardiac ultrasonography didn't change and almost remained consistent during the treatment course.Blood pressure decreased significantly over a year in patients with parathyroidectomy, while DBP increased significantly over time by cinacalcet treatment. Rabbits are widely used as models in biological research, and the pathogen status of rabbits used in studies can directly affect the results of experiments. Serological surveillance is the common monitoring method used in laboratory animals. A rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective high-throughput Luminex xMAP assay could be an attractive alternative to labor-intensive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) methods. In this study, recombinant proteins from rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus and rabbit rotavirus and whole viral lysates of Sendai virus were used as coating antigens in an xMAP assay for the simultaneous detection of antibodies against these pathogens. The xMAP assay showed high specificity, with no cross-reaction with other pathogens. The coefficient of variation for intra-assay and inter-assay comparisons was less than 3% and 4%, respectively, indicating good repeatability and stability of the assay. The xMAP assay exhibited similar limits of detection for rabbit hemorrhagic virus and Sendai virus and was less sensitive for the detection of rabbit rotavirus when compared with commercial ELISA kits. A total of 52 clinical samples were tested simultaneously using both the xMAP assay and ELISA kits. The results obtained using these two methods were 100% coincident. In summary, the novel xMAP assay offers an alternative choice for rapid and sensitive high-throughput detection of antibodies in rabbit serum and can be used as a daily monitoring tool for laboratory animals. Summary Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) has emerged and spread throughout the porcine industry in many countries over the last 6 years. PDCoV caused watery diarrhoea, vomiting and dehydration in newborn piglets. A sensitive diagnostic method would be beneficial to the prevention and control of PDCoV infection. Recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) is an isothermal amplification method which has been widely used for virus detection. A probe‐based reverse transcription RPA (RT‐RPA) assay was developed for real‐time detection of PDCoV. The amplification can be finished in 20 min and fluorescence monitoring was performed by a portable device. The lowest detection limit of the PDCoV RT‐RPA assay was 100 copies of RNA molecules per reaction; moreover, the RT‐RPA assay had no cross‐reaction with other common swine viruses. The clinical performance of the RT‐RPA assay was evaluated using 108 clinical samples (54 intestine specimens and 54 faecal swab specimens). The coincidence rate of the detection results for clinical samples between RT‐RPA and RT‐qPCR was 97.2%. In summary, the real‐time RT‐RPA assay offers a promising alternative to RT‐qPCR for point‐of‐care detection of PDCoV.

We study the impacts of environmental awareness on environmental quality and income-pollution relationship. For our theoretical analysis, we examine a non-cooperative transboundary pollution control game between a less developed country (LDC) and a more developed country (MDC), and find that a higher level of environmental awareness by the government and citizens of the LDC has comprehensively beneficial effects on environmental policy and regional environmental quality. It also flattens the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) and shifts it to the left. Our empirical findings confirm the theoretical projections. In the LDCs, environmental awareness plays an influential role in determining environmental expenditure; also, EKCs arrive at the peaks earlier, in countries where the public has higher environmental awareness.

Swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV) is a novel coronavirus which was associated with severe diarrhea disease in pigs. SADS-CoV was first detected and identified as the causative agent of a devastating swine disease outbreak in southern China in 2017. Routine monitoring and early detection of the source of infection is therefore integral to the prevention and control of SADS-CoV infection. In this study, a SYBR green-based real-time reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) technique was established for rapid detection and monitoring of this emerging virus. Specific primers were designed based on the conserved region within the M gene of the viral genome. The lowest detection limit of the RT-qPCR assay was 10 copies/μL. This assay was specific and had no cross-reaction with other 11 swine viruses. The positive rate of 84 clinical samples for the SYBR green-based RT-qPCR and the conventional RT-PCR was 73.81% (62/84) and 53.57% (45/84), respectively. These results demonstrated that the SYBR green-based RT-qPCR technique was an effectively diagnostic method with higher sensitivity than probe-based RT-qPCR and gel-based RT-PCR for detection and epidemiological investigations of SADS-CoV.

Objective Vascular calcification (VC) is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. Hyperphosphatemia and microinflammation statement are known major contributors to the development of VC; however, the mechanisms are unknown. The aims of this study were to explore the risk factors of VC in MHD patients and to explore whether high phosphate could increase the secretion of inflammatory cytokines via PiT-1 in monocytes. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on 65 MHD patients to assess the relevance of coronary artery calcification (CAC), inflammatory factors, serum phosphate, and sodium-dependent phosphate cotransporter (NPT) mRNA expression of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the predictors of CAC. The calcification effects of high phosphate (HP), TNF-α, and supernatants of healthy human monocytes treated with HP were further evaluated in cultured HASMCs. Results Diabetes, longer dialysis vintage, higher serum TNF-α levels, and PiT-1 mRNA expression of PBMCs) were independent risk factors of CAC in MHD patients. The mRNA levels of PiT-1 in PBMCs were positively correlated with serum phosphate, CAC scores, and Pit-2 mRNA levels of PBMCs. The expressions of TNF-α, IL-6, and PiT-1 in human monocytes were significantly increased in a dose-dependent manner after treatment with HP, which was subsequently inhibited by NPT antagonist phosphonoformic acid. Neither TNF-α alone nor supernatants of monocytes stimulated with HP promoted the expression of osteopontin and Runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2) or caused mineralization in human aortic smooth muscle cells, but combined with HP intervention, the calcification effects were markedly increased in human aortic smooth muscle cells and ameliorated by phosphonoformic acid treatment. Conclusion Hyperphosphatemia directly increased the synthesis and secretion of TNF-α by monocytes may via PiT-1 pathway, resulting in elevated systemic inflammatory response, which may further aggravate VC induced by phosphate overload in MHD patients.

Infectious laryngotracheitis is a significant respiratory disease of chickens that causes huge economic losses due to high morbidity and mortality and reduced egg production. A real-time recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) assay was developed to accurately detect ILTV. The specific probe and primer sets were carefully designed and screened. The real-time RPA assay was carried out at 39 °C for 30 min, and results were obtained within 15 min. The results of the specificity assay showed no fluorescence signals with other avian-related viruses. The sensitivity of the assay was 1 × 102 copies/μL. The low CV value showed that the assay was reproducible. A total of 115 clinical samples were tested using the real-time RPA assay and the real-time PCR assay in parallel; the coincidence rates of the two detection methods were 100%. The results indicated that the real-time RPA assay is a specific, sensitive, rapid, and useful tool for epidemiological studies and clinical diagnosis, especially in the field and in resource-poor areas.

Protein-energy wasting, characterized by decreased muscle mass, is one of the strongest predictors of mortality in patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). As people get older, their muscle strength usually declines faster than muscle mass. However, the association between lower-limb muscle strength and all-cause mortality remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate risk factors for decreased upper-limb muscle strength in MHD patients and its impact on patient survival. The cross-sectional part of the study included 174 MHD patients. Subsequently, they were followed up for 52 weeks. Biceps muscle strength, anthropometry, body composition, dietary intake, daily steps, and biochemical indicators of malnutrition and inflammation were evaluated. Risk factors for muscle weakness were screened by multiple linear regression analysis, and patient survival was analyzed by Kaplan–Merier and Cox multivariate analysis. Using the 2015 and 2017 waves of the China Household Finance Survey, we measured financial literacy and study its relationship to households’ demand for digital finance. We found that a majority of households in the People’s Republic of China possess limited financial literacy. The low level of financial sophistication is responsible for the low usage of digital finance among Chinese households. Further, the positive impact of financial literacy on digital finance is more pronounced for wealthy, high-income, and young households, women, and households in urban and coastal areas. Our results are robust to using a variety of specifications and controlling for endogeneity, peer effects, cognition, and voluntary self-exclusion.

This paper examines the impact of economic growth and trade openness on environment in 261 Chinese cities over the period of 2004–2013, using recently developed continuously updated fully modified method which allows for both cross‐sectional dependence and endogeneity. Two types of pollutants, industrial waste water and sulphur dioxide are investigated, and three measures of openness are employed in the regression. From the results, we find that the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis holds not only for the whole China, but also in different regions. It is estimated that wastewater pollution increases with economic development until per capita GDP reaching the turning point of 42,991–48,828 yuan (in constant 2002 price), which varies depending on the specific measure of trade openness. The turning point for sulphur dioxide is found to occur at a much lower income level around 9,588–10,663 yuan per capita GDP. Furthermore, export is mostly found to be positively related with pollution and the impact of import is likely to be negative for both the whole China and across regions, if the significance is identified in the estimation results.

This paper investigates the impacts of defined-benefit (DB) pension plans on the corporate investment choices between diversifying and non-diversifying investments. We find a firm’s DB plan coverage is negatively associated with its propensity of making a major investment. Subject to a major investment decision, however, the firms with higher DB plan coverage is more likely to diversify, i.e. acquire firms abroad or in other industries, rather than invest in fixed assets or make non-diversifying (i.e. domestic horizontal) acquisitions. Moreover, in diversifying acquisitions, they are more likely to invest in countries or industries with strongly unionized workforce. Further analysis on post-investment performance shows that firms with higher DB plan coverage experience a greater improvement in operating profitability after a diversifying acquisition, and the improvement mainly comes from a higher asset turnover rather than cost reduction. On the other hand, DB plan sponsoring firms experience a decline in profitability after a large capital expenditure or a non-diversifying acquisition. We propose both bargaining motive and conforming motive can explain these results.

SHPT is one of the most common complications of CKD-MBD. Recent studies indicate that oxyphil cell proliferation is related to SHPT progression, while not inhibited by current treatments. The aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between oxyphil cell and clinical indicators in SHPT, further explore the protein expression differences of oxyphil cell. Among 33 MHD patients, 84.8% patients have one or more oxyphil dominant glands and the overall oxyphil cells proportion was 39.5 ± 16.3%. Univariate correlation and multivariable linear regression model showed that oral calcitriol dosage and treatment duration were independently correlated to oxyphil cell ratio. Proteomic study showed that mitochondrial protein, protein synthesis, and cell cycle regulation were significantly altered in oxyphil cell nodules. DBP was downregulated in oxyphil nodules on protein level, which may contribute to calcitriol resistance by reducing vitamin D transport. Through KEGG and PPI network analysis, Wnt signaling, TGF-β, ubiquitin mediated proteolysis and cell cycle pathways were significantly enriched in oxyphil cell nodules. Among which, MIF-CUL1 axis was significantly increased. These results suggest that the limitations of vitamin D in SHPT treatment is closely related to oxyphil cell and may be attributed to the dysregulation of vitamin D transport and ubiquitin regulation of oxyphil cell. Significance Secondary hyperparathyroidism in end stage renal patients is one of the major challenges nephrology field faces. Emerging data indicate that oxyphil cell may participate in the pathophysiology of secondary hyperparathyroidism, while both calcimimetics and vitamin D receptor activators treatments are underperformed in controlling oxyphil cell proliferation. In the present study, we validated that the proliferation of oxyphil cells is associated with calcitriol treatment, and discovered that oxyphil cell nodules were significantly different from chief cells nodules in protein expression of mitochondria, protein synthesis and cell cycle regulation. It is noteworthy that DBP was downregulated in oxyphil nodules on protein level and may therefore participate in the resistance of calcitriol therapy by reducing the vitamin D transport capacity. Wnt signaling, TGF-β, ubiquitin mediated proteolysis and cell cycle pathways were significantly enriched in oxyphil cell nodules, among which, MIF-CUL1 axis may play an important role in the regulation of oxyphil proliferation and calcitriol resistance through ubiquitin mediated proteolysis. These results suggest that calcitriol treatment has limitations in oxyphil cell predominant SHPT, which may be attributed to the dysregulation of vitamin D transport and ubiquitin regulation of oxyphil cell, and the influence of microenvironment in uremia status may be the underlying reason.

Using the 2011 China Household Finance Survey (CHFS) database, we explore the heterogeneous impacts of social networks on informal financial inclusion for Chinese urban and rural households. We find that social networks significantly increase the probability of households’ participation in the informal financial market, augment the size of informal financial transaction, and raise the ratio of informal lending over the total household assets. We also identify the mechanisms through which the social networks affect households’ participation in the informal financial market. By reducing information cost, perceived risk and precautionary saving, social networks play a larger role for urban households than rural households. Notably, the effects of social networks on informal finance are strengthened with the development of formal financial market.

This paper investigates the role of punctuation in the peer-to-peer (P2P) lending market. Using data from Renrendai, one of the largest P2P lending platforms in China, we investigate how the amount of punctuation used in loan descriptions influences the funding probability, borrowing rate, and default. The empirical evidence shows that the amount of punctuation is negatively associated with the funding probability and borrowing rate. We propose that the usage of punctuation affects the readability of a loan description and reflects borrowers’ self-control and cognitive ability. Within a given number of words, excessive usage of punctuation makes loan description informal and reduces the readability of the text, thereby impairing investors’ trust in borrowers. Moreover, borrowers that overuse punctuation may have lower ability of self-control, and tend to underestimate the risk of borrowing and offer lower borrowing rate due to overconfidence.

Murine parvovirus is one of the most prevalent infectious pathogens in mouse colonies. A specific primer pair targeting the VP2 gene of minute virus of mice (MVM) and mouse parvovirus (MPV) was utilized for high resolution melting (HRM) analysis. The resulting melting curves could distinguish these two virus strains and there was no detectable amplification of the other mouse pathogens which included rat parvovirus (KRV), ectromelia virus (ECT), mouse adenovirus (MAD), mouse cytomegalovirus (MCMV), polyoma virus (Poly), Helicobactor hepaticus (H. hepaticus) and Salmonella typhimurium (S. typhimurium). The detection limit of the standard was 10 copies/μL. This study showed that the PCR-HRM assay could be an alternative useful method with high specificity and sensitivity for differentiating murine parvovirus strains MVM and MPV.

Population ageing has significant economic and social costs, and this paper studies its impacts on inequality, both theoretically and empirically. First, we build a two‐period overlapping generation model with uncertain lifetime and find that population ageing has the overall effect of increasing income and consumption inequality within the society. For empirical analysis, we use household data from China Health and Nutrition Survey to assess the age effect on income and consumption inequality in China, and confirm the results predicted by the theoretical model.

This paper studies the economic and environmental impacts of foreign direct investment (FDI) in China. First, we build a simple theoretical model to predict the overall beneficial effects of FDI, and also find that a stronger sense of “environmental citizenship” by the FDI firm is associated with lower pollution and lower emission intensity in the host region. For empirical analysis, we use Spatial Durbin Model (SDM) to address the regional spillovers of FDI and pollution in China, and confirm the beneficial impacts of FDI both environmentally and economically. We also find that FDI from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan (HMT) that is assumed to exhibit a stronger sense of environmental citizenship due to its closer ties with mainland China, significantly improves the host region's environmental outcome but has no measurable effects on its economic growth; in contrast, FDI from other origins significantly promotes the economic growth of the host economy although it has no measurable impacts on the environmental outcome.

Aim: Returning to society plays an important role in improving the quality of life in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients, and retention of employment is one of the core enablers. The study is to assess the employment status and to determine the variables for unemployment in Chinese MHD patients. Methods: Prevalent MHD patients from four dialysis centers in Shanghai China were enrolled. We assessed patients’ employment status, current social functioning, hemodialysis modality, annual income and general health condition. Among current unemployed working-age patients, the reasons of quitting jobs and willingness of being reemployed were evaluated. Results: A total of 231 patients were studied, among which 114 patients were unemployed 1 year before hemodialysis. Among 117 employed patients, 16 patients quitted jobs before dialysis inception, while 49 patients quitted jobs at the initiation of HD, and 26 patients followed after a few months’ HD. The main reasons for ceasing employment were physical insufficiency, conflict between dialysis and work schedules, lack of support from employers and resistance from family members. Among the 166 patients who were in their working age, 26 patients were employed. The unemployed patients had the characters of elder age, lower education level, higher annual family income, higher female ratio, lower blood flow, lower physical functioning, and social functioning and lower frequency of weekend hemodialysis and HDF/HF. Among the 140 unemployed patients, only 47 patients had the willingness of being reemployed. Their unemployment status was positively associated with elder age ((OR) 3.13, 95% CI, 1.08–9.1), lower education level ((OR) 1.97, 95% CI, 1.05–5.92), and higher family income ((OR) 7.75, 95% CI, 2.49–24.14). Conclusion: Ratio of employment and willingness of being reemployed was low in MHD working-age patients. Lack of social and family’s support also hampered patient’s returning to society except for the HD treatment quality.

Objective Few studies have focused on the effects of dialysis on cinacalcet. In addition, there is no data available on hemodiafiltration (HDF) all over the world. Therefore, we studied the pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of cinacalcet in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) or HDF to provide more guiding information on its use in these patients, especially in China. Materials and methods In this open-label, single-dose, single-center study of 7 patients with renal failure who underwent dialysis, patients were randomly allocated to two groups consisting of 4 and 3 patients who received low-flux HD and HDF treatments, respectively. All participants underwent dialysis for 4 hours immediately after receiving single oral doses of a 25 mg cinacalcet tablet. High-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) and electrochemical luminescence (EI) were used to determine the cinacalcet plasma concentrations and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) serum levels, respectively. Results Peak concentration (Cmax) and area under the curve (AUC) from time 0 to 24 hours (AUC0-24h) of the low-flux HD therapy group were 21.8 ± 18.6 ng/mL and 145.3 ± 91.8 ng×h/mL, respectively, which were similar to those of the HDF group (30.9 ± 7.9 ng/mL and 161.6 ± 26.5 ng×h/mL, respectively). iPTH concentrations of the HD therapy group decreased after cinacalcet administration and increased following its clearance. However, iPTH levels of subjects receiving HDF therapy did not change. Conclusion Compared with healthy Chinese subjects, patients with renal failure had a higher Cmax and AUC0-24h, slightly prolonged time to Cmax (tmax) after administration of the same dose of cinacalcet. On HD treatment day, variation trends of iPTH in Chinese patients and healthy subjects were similar and significantly different from that on the HDF treatment day. Considering the high protein binding rate of cinacalcet, this may lead to the great free-drug clearance during HDF treatment.

As accompaniments to fast-growing economies, the effects of environmental degradation such as deteriorating water quality, land deforestation and pollution, and frequent atmospheric haze are gaining increasing attention from both policy makers and the public across countries in Asia. We give an overview on environmental performance, disentangle its drivers, and finally advance preliminary policy recommendations for more effective environmental governance in the region.

This paper maps the risk arising from the transition to a low-emission economy and studies its transmission channels within the financial system. The environmental dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (E-DSGE) model shows that tightening environmental regulations deteriorates firms' balance sheets as it internalizes the pollution costs, which consequentially accelerates the risks that the financial system faces. This empirical study, which employs the Clean Air Action that the Chinese government launched in 2013 as a quasi-experiment, supports the theoretical implications. The analysis of a unique dataset containing 1.3 million loans shows that the default rates of high-polluting firms rose by around 50% along their environmental policy exposure. At the same time, the loan spread charged to such firms increased by 5.5% thereafter.

Globally, the regulation of P2P lending has evolved significantly in recent years, with mostly beneficial effects on the diversification of funding for individuals and corporations. Regulatory responses have varied greatly between countries, and the characteristics of the markets that have emerged vary as a result. We describe and evaluate the range of P2P lending systems on offer to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in several countries, considering different regulatory regimes. In some countries, there are problematic incentives for platforms that rate credit and originate loans without holding the risk of these loans. In addition, when investor returns are guaranteed by platforms, investors have no incentive to distinguish among risk categories. In several countries, notably the People’s Republic of China, P2P platforms have engaged in fraudulent behavior and Ponzi-like schemes. On the other hand, stringent regulation in the United States has excessively impeded new entrants from providing competition to established platforms. Regulators should be mindful of these risks and others, while also seeking to capitalize on the benefits that the sector offers for providing new funding opportunities to SMEs. In our view, the United Kingdom can be suggested as an effective model to follow because of its tailor-made and flexible regulation.

We document and analyze the gender gap in the online credit market. Using data from Renrendai, a leading peer-to-peer lending platform in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), we show that lending to female borrowers is associated with better loan performance, including a lower probability of default, a higher expected profit, and a lower expected loss than for their male peers. However, despite the higher creditworthiness, we don’t find any measurable gender impact on funding success rate, meaning that female borrowers have to compensate lenders by providing higher profitability to achieve a similar funding probability to their male peers. This evidence indicates the existence of a gender gap that discriminates against female borrowers. Further analysis implies that this gender gap is independent of the amount of information disclosed by borrowers.

Background Murine norovirus (MNV) is recognized as the most prevalent viral pathogen in captive mouse colonies. The rapid detection assay for MNV would be a useful tool for monitoring and preventing MNV infection. A recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) assay was established in this study to provide a solution for rapid and sensitive detection of MNV. Results The detection limit of the RT-RPA assay for the detection of MNV was 1 × 102 copies of RNA molecules per reaction. The assay was specific since there was no cross-reaction with other common murine viruses. In addition, the broad reactivity of the RT-RPA assay was validated using the synthesized template carrying seven point mutations among several MNV strains. The MNV RT-RPA assay could detect as few as 1 × 102 copies of the mutant per reaction, suggesting the assay could be broadly reactive against a large diversity of MNV strains. Forty eight clinical samples including 16 gastric tissue specimens, 16 cecal tissue specimens and 16 fecal specimens were tested for the validation of the new developed RT-RPA assay. The detection results of RT-RPA and RT-qPCR for clinical samples were very similar, except that a gastric tissue sample which was positive by RT-qPCR, with a RNA titer of 27 copies, was negative by RT-RPA. Conclusions A broadly reactive RT-RPA assay was successfully established for MNV detection.

This study aims to evaluate the application of color Doppler ultrasound in monitoring the complications of autologous arteriovenous fistula in hemodialysis patients. Patients with maintenance hemodialysis who underwent autologous arteriovenous fistula were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Ultrasound was used to detect fistula complications (stenosis and thrombosis), brachial artery diameter, and hemodynamic parameters. The ultrasound parameters were analyzed and screened to identify the most important indicator for monitoring complications. In all, 89 patients were included. Ultrasound showed 72 cases (80.90%) had normal fistula structure, and 17 cases (19.10%) had complications. The diameter, time-averaged mean velocity, flow volume, and diastolic peak velocity of brachial artery in complication group were significantly lower than those of noncomplication group (P .05). Indicators showed statistical significance were grouped based on quantiles. The incidence of complications was higher when the brachial artery diameter was ≤5.40 mm, or brachial artery flow was ≤460 mL/ min, or brachial artery pulsatility index was >1.04, or brachial artery resistance index was >0.60. Ultrasound monitoring of brachial artery diameter and hemodynamic parameters can help early detection of fistula complications. When the brachial artery diameter was ≤5.40 mm, or brachial artery flow was ≤460 mL/min, or brachial artery pulsatility index was >1.04, or brachial artery resistance index >0.60, stenosis or thrombosis should be checked to prevent fistula failure.
