2. Risk averse constrained blackbox optimization under mixed aleatory/epistemic uncertainties

Abstract

This paper addresses risk averse constrained optimization problems where the objective and constraint functions can only be computed by a blackbox subject to unknown uncertainties. To handle mixed aleatory/epistemic uncertainties, the problem is transformed into a conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) constrained optimization problem. General inequality constraints are managed through Lagrangian relaxation. A convolution between a truncated Gaussian density and the Lagrangian function is used to smooth the problem. A gradient estimator of the smooth Lagrangian function is derived, possessing attractive properties: it estimates the gradient with only two outputs of the blackbox, regardless of dimension, and evaluates the blackbox only within the bound constraints. This gradient estimator is then utilized in a multi-timescale stochastic approximation algorithm to solve the smooth problem. Under mild assumptions, this algorithm almost surely converges to a feasible point of the CVaR-constrained problem whose objective function value is arbitrarily close to that of a local solution. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted to serve three purposes. Firstly, they provide insights on how to set the hyperparameter values of the algorithm. Secondly, they demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm when a truncated Gaussian gradient estimator is used. Lastly, they show its ability to handle mixed aleatory/epistemic uncertainties in practical applications.

3. Sequential stochastic blackbox optimization with zeroth-order gradient estimators

Abstract

This work considers stochastic optimization problems in which the objective function values can only be computed by a blackbox corrupted by some random noise following an unknown distribution. The proposed method is based on sequential stochastic optimization (SSO): the original problem is decomposed into a sequence of subproblems. Each of these subproblems is solved using a zeroth order version of a sign stochastic gradient descent with momentum algorithm (ZO-Signum) and with an increasingly fine precision. This decomposition allows a good exploration of the space while maintaining the efficiency of the algorithm once it gets close to the solution. Under Lipschitz continuity assumption on the blackbox, a convergence rate in expectation is derived for the ZO-signum algorithm. Moreover, if the blackbox is smooth and convex or locally convex around its minima, a convergence rate to an $\epsilon$-optimal point of the problem may be obtained for the SSO algorithm. Numerical experiments are conducted to compare the SSO algorithm with other state-of-the-art algorithms and to demonstrate its competitiveness.

4. Handling of constraints in multiobjective blackbox optimization

Abstract

This work proposes the integration of two new constraint-handling approaches into the blackbox constrained multiobjective optimization algorithm DMulti-MADS, an extension of the Mesh Adaptive Direct Search (MADS) algorithm for single-objective constrained optimization. The constraints are aggregated into a single constraint violation function which is used either in a two-phase approach, where research of a feasible point is prioritized if not available before improving the current solution set, or in a progressive barrier approach, where any trial point whose constraint violation function values are above a threshold are rejected. This threshold is progressively decreased along the iterations. As in the single-objective case, it is proved that these two variants generate feasible and/or infeasible sequences which converge either in the feasible case to a set of local Pareto optimal points or in the infeasible case to Clarke stationary points according to the constraint violation function. Computational experiments show that these two approaches are competitive with other state-of-the-art algorithms.

5. Combining Cross Entropy and MADS methods for inequality constrained global optimization

Abstract

This paper proposes a way to combine the Mesh Adaptive Direct Search (MADS) algorithm with the Cross-Entropy (CE) method for non smooth constrained optimization. The CE method is used as a Search step by the MADS algorithm. The result of this combination retains the convergence properties of MADS and allows an efficient exploration in order to move away from local minima. The CE method samples trial points according to a multivariate normal distribution whose mean and standard deviation are calculated from the best points found so far. Numerical experiments show an important improvement of this method to reach the feasible region and to escape local minima.

Abstract

National audience; ABSTRACT – The increasing electrification of urban public transports requires to improve the design of the electrical infrastructures in order to account for all the technical and financial challenges involved in the creation of a new line. This paper presents a new optimization tool dedicated to the sizing of tramway electrical infrastructures: power substations, overhead transmission line, feeders, equipotentials. The goal is to determine the number, positions and technical characteristics of all these components in order to achieve the best trade-offs between investment costs, energy costs and the quality of the traffic power supply. The sizing problem is formulated as a multi-objective optimization problem and solved using the NSGA-II genetic algorithm. The proposed method is applied to a simple test-case and results are analyzed.; RESUME – L'électrification croissante des transports publics urbains nécessite d'améliorer la conception des infrastructures électriques afin de prendre en compte l'ensemble des enjeux techniques et financiers liés à la création d'une nouvelle ligne. Cet article présente un nouvel outil d'optimisation dédié au dimensionnement des infrastructures électriques des tramways : sous-stations électriques, lignes aériennes de contact, feeders, équipotentielles. L'objectif est de déterminer le nombre, les positions et les caractéristiques techniques de tous ces composants afin d'obtenir les meilleurs compromis entre les coûts d'investissement, les coûts énergétiques et la qualité de l'alimentation du trafic. Le problème de dimensionnement est formulé comme un problème d'optimisation multi-objectifs et résolu à l'aide de l'algorithme génétique NSGA-II. La méthode proposée est appliquée à un cas test simple et les résultats sont analysés.

Abstract

The robust optimisation is performed in the preliminary design phase dealing with analytic models. The analytic models come either from the finite element models or from the physical laws approximation. The variability on the design parameters is defined using random variables identified by their first two Moments, the Mean and the Standard deviation. A robust design approach is proposed that determines whether a robust design solution exists or not to the given design problem. This approach combines a reformulation of the analytic model with the new design specifications. It integrates the parameter uncertainties (Mean and Standard deviation) and a deterministic optimisation algorithm (SQP algorithm). The Means and the Standard deviation are computed using the Propagation of Variance method. The engineering application of an electrical actuator design is introduced and used to show the implementation and the effectiveness of the proposed robust approach. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

International audience; Manufactured mechanical parts such as sheet metal and thin-wall featured parts, often have significant geometrical differences compared to their nominal CAD models as they have a considerably different shape in a free state condition due to gravity and/or residual stress. Thus, expensive conformation fixtures are traditionally used during inspection operations. Naming such parts flexible (non-rigid or compliant), in this paper, a new method for avoiding fixtures is introduced. Validation was conducted on a virtual industrial case study typically produced with waterjet cutting. Obtained satisfactory results reflect the effectiveness and utility of this approach in precision detection of manufacturing defects.

49. Optimization based on parameter moments estimation for robust design.

Abstract

This paper deals with robust design based on analytical models. We consider that variability on design parameters are represented by the parameter Mean and Standard Deviation. We propose in this article a new robust design approach that allows the designer either to find a robust solution in a reasonable execution time or to be informed of the non-existence of a robust solution for his design problem. The process combines a reformulation of the model to integrate parameter uncertainties and a deterministic optimization algorithm with new specifications based on robust objectives. The engineering application of an electrical actuator design is presented and used to show the implementation and the effectiveness of this new robust approach. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
