International audience; We aim to present a rereading of the lithic collection from the site of Saint-Colomban in Carnac (Morbihan), and curated at the Museum of Prehistory of Carnac. Our recent work has made it possible to review all the archaeological remains resulting from the various campaigns of prospecting, rescue excavations, and surface collection carried out intermittently since the end of the 1970s, and have thus led to the identification of two clearly distinct assemblages. The oldest chronologically dates to the Lower Palaeolithic, and is already well known, as it gave its name to the Colombanian, a regional material culture contemporary to the Acheulean. However, this series has remained unpublished in its entirety. The second assemblage is from a more recent human occupation, dating to the Middle Palaeolithic, and is less known. From the new study of these two series, we can propose a refined chronocultural dating of these two assemblages of major interest for the regional Palaeolithic.; Nous présentons ici une relecture de la collection lithique issue du site de Saint-Colomban à Carnac (Morbihan), et conservée au Musée de Préhistoire de Carnac. Nos travaux récents ont permis de revoir l’ensemble des vestiges archéologiques issus des différentes campagnes de fouilles de sauvetage, de prospections et de ramassages de surface effectués de manière discontinue depuis la fin des années 1970, et ont ainsi conduit à l’identification de deux assemblages clairement distincts. Le plus ancien chronologiquement est attribué au Paléolithique inférieur et est déjà bien connu, car il a donné son nom au Colombanien, une culture matérielle régionale contemporaine de l’Acheuléen. Cette série est toutefois restée jusqu’à présent inédite dans son intégralité. Le second assemblage correspond à une occupation humaine plus récente, attribuée au Paléolithique moyen, et est bien moins connue. Une nouvelle étude de ces deux séries nous permet de présenter ici une proposition d’attribution chrono-culturelle affinée à ces ensembles d’intérêt majeur pour le Paléolithique régional.

While Late Middle Palaeolithic industries are characterized by a well-documented diversity of stone tool types and blank production methods, the latter of which can at times be exclusively represented in certain assemblages, the bifacial tool component sometimes portrays clear similarities in use and manufacture method. Beyond sharing both comparable volumetric structures and arrangement of active and or prehensile areas, the recurrence in several assemblages of specific groups of bifacial tools used mostly for butchery is particularly striking. Here, we address several techno-economic and cognitive aspects of biface production and use combined with a consideration of their context. Is the same degree of variability in function and manufacture method equally visible in the retouched tool component? What scales of mobility or technical use-lives do these different bifacial tools portray? Do certain highly elaborate flake tools also reflect equally complex behaviors? How to interpret the presence of carefully manufactured pieces in non-local raw materials alongside others made in local varieties that are hardly reduced but nevertheless equally functional? Finally, which components may have carried a symbolic value or shed light on technical abilities or functional objectives evident in the conception, elaboration, use, and ultimate fate of these bifacial pieces. Several recently analyzed assemblages with a relatively significant bifacial component from the Charente, Dordogne and the Pyrenees-Atlantiques departements show certain similarities or important differences. In characterizing the coexistence of flake production and bifacial-shaping, we attempt to reveal to what extent and in which ways certain bifacial tools stand out. When combined with technological and cognitive considerations, this approach provides new insights on an important behavioral facet of Neanderthal groups who occupied the Aquitaine Basin after the Last Interglacial.

This contractor generated Section 106 and 110 report is a historic property inventory and an assessment of adverse effects associated with the Demolition of the Antenna Farm in the San Antonio Terrace Archaeological District on Vandenberg Air Force Base in Santa Barbara County in California. The purpose of the document is to compile any prior or current studies performed in support of the Demolition of the Antenna Farm in the San Antonio Terrace Archaeological District project as a single Section 106 and 100 compliance report. To help meet its compliance obligations under Section 106, the 30th Civil Engineer Squadron, Installation Management Flight, Environmental Section, Environmental Assets (30 CES/CEIEA) at Vandenberg AFB issued Statement of Work: Cultural and Natural Resources Compliance Assessments in Support of SMC’s Antenna Farm Demolition Project, Vandenberg Air Force Base, Santa Barbara County, CA, dated May 2016. Applied EarthWorks, Inc. was retained to complete the cultural resources portion of the statement of work. This report provides the information needed by the California State Historic Preservation Officer to concur on the project findings and determinations for individual resources as presented by the Vandenberg Air Force Base Cultural Resource Manager. The report specifically examines project impacts and/or avoidance strategies for four archaeological sites; CA-SBA-991, -992, -1001, -3012.

The initial Phase I investigation for the Salt River Project 1978 Power Plant Study has been completed. This report presents that data which was collected during library research and actual field reconnaissance and is intended to offer a background on the archaeological and ethno-historical resource base of the two proposed areas being considered for plant site and wellfield location. A discussion of the possible impacts with alternatives to these is also included. The report includes contributions by Michael D. Metcalf, Howard M. Davidson, and Kathleen E. Moffitt of the Museum of Northern Arizona.
