Abstract

Indirect Drive Inertial Confinement Fusion Experiments on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) have achieved a burning plasma state with neutron yields exceeding 170 kJ, roughly 3 times the prior record and a necessary stage for igniting plasmas. The results are achieved despite multiple sources of degradations that lead to high variability in performance. Results shown here, for the first time, include an empirical correction factor for mode-2 asymmetry in the burning plasma regime in addition to previously determined corrections for radiative mix and mode-1. Analysis shows that including these three corrections alone accounts for the measured fusion performance variability in the two highest performing experimental campaigns on the NIF to within error. Here we quantify the performance sensitivity to mode-2 symmetry in the burning plasma regime and apply the results, in the form of an empirical correction to a 1D performance model. Furthermore, we find the sensitivity to mode-2 determined through a series of integrated 2D radiation hydrodynamic simulations to be consistent with the experimentally determined sensitivity only when including alpha-heating.

2. A New Class of Materials Based on Nanoporous High Entropy Alloys with Outstanding Properties

Abstract

Nanoporous metals with a random, bicontinuous structure of both pores and ligaments exhibit many unique mechanical properties, but their technical applications are often limited by their intrinsic brittleness under tensile strain triggered by fracture of the weakest ligaments. Here, we use molecular dynamics simulations to study the mechanical behavior and thermal stability of two different bicontinuous nanoporous high entropy alloys, Al0.1CoCrFeNi and NbMoTaW. To isolate the properties related to the nanoporous nature of our samples, we also studied the corresponding bulk and nanocrystalline systems. The results demonstrate that the specific modulus of nanoporous HEAs are 2 to 3 times greater than that of single element nanoporous materials with specific strength reaching values 5 to 10 times higher, comparable to bulk metals with the highest specific strength. Bicontinuous HEAs also displayed excellent resistance to thermal degradation as evidenced by the absence of coarsening ligaments up to temperatures of 1273 K which ensures the durability and reliability in high-temperature applications. The findings uncover unprecedented mechanical and thermal properties of bicontinuous nanoporous high entropy alloys, paving the way for their promising utilization in advanced engineering and structural applications.

Abstract

Activating pretreatments are used to tune surface composition and structure of bimetallic-alloy catalysts. Herein, the activation-induced changes in material properties of a nanoporous Ag0.03Au0.97 alloy and their subsequent evolution under steady-state CH3OH oxidation conditions are investigated. Activation using O3 results in AgO and Au2O3, strongly enriching the near-surface region in Ag. These oxides reduce in the O2/CH3OH mixture, yielding CO2 and producing a highly Ag-enriched surface alloy. At the reaction temperature (423 K), Ag realloys gradually with Au but remains enriched (stabilized by surface O) in the top few nanometers, producing methyl formate selectively without significant deactivation. At higher temperatures, bulk diffusion induces sintering and Ag redistribution, leading to a loss of activity. These findings demonstrate that material properties determining catalytic activity are dynamic and that metastable (kinetically trapped) forms of the material may be responsible for catalysis, providing guiding principles concerning the activation of heterogeneous catalysts for selective oxidation.

Abstract

We describe our current understanding of the variability and degradation mechanisms observed through a series of five indirectly driven inertial fusion implosions fielded at the National Ignition Facility in the fall of 2021, four of which attempted to reproduce the first experiment to achieve Lawson's criterion for ignition with a thermonuclear yield of 1.35 MJ on August 8, 2021. A large number of absolutely calibrated (imaging, time-resolved, and spectrally resolved) x-ray and neutron diagnostics are fielded on the NIF along multiple lines of sight for each experiment. This allows for a reconstruction of the DT fuel and ablator mix injected into the hotspot around peak burn. We show that nuclear yield variations are well reproduced by numerical modeling when the measured low mode asymmetries and mix mass are included. Furthermore, these observed perturbations during burn are linked to small variations in laser delivery and capsule defects. Abstract

The deformation mechanism of body-centered cubic (bcc) nanocrystalline tantalum with grain sizes of 10–30 nm is investigated by nanoindentation, scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. In a deviation from molecular dynamics simulations and existing experimental observations on other bcc nanocrystalline metals, the plastic deformation of nanocrystalline Ta during nanoindentation is controlled by deformation twinning. The observation of multiple twin intersections suggests that the physical mechanism of deformation twinning in bcc nanocrystalline materials is different from that in face-centered cubic (fcc) nanocrystalline metals.

Abstract

For more than half a century, researchers around the world have been engaged in attempts to achieve fusion ignition as a proof of principle of various fusion concepts. Following the Lawson criterion, an ignited plasma is one where the fusion heating power is high enough to overcome all the physical processes that cool the fusion plasma, creating a positive thermodynamic feedback loop with rapidly increasing temperature. In inertially confined fusion, ignition is a state where the fusion plasma can begin "burn propagation" into surrounding cold fuel, enabling the possibility of high energy gain. While "scientific breakeven" (i.e., unity target gain) has not yet been achieved (here target gain is 0.72, 1.37 MJ of fusion for 1.92 MJ of laser energy), this Letter reports the first controlled fusion experiment, using laser indirect drive, on the National Ignition Facility to produce capsule gain (here 5.8) and reach ignition by nine different formulations of the Lawson criterion.

Abstract

The recent discovery of more than a thousand planets outside our Solar System (1,2), together with the significant push to achieve inertially confined fusion in the laboratory (3), has prompted a renewed interest in how dense matter behaves at millions to billions of atmospheres of pressure. The theoretical description of such electron-degenerate matter has matured since the early quantum statistical model of Thomas and Fermi (4-10), and now suggests that new complexities can emerge at pressures where core electrons (not only valence electrons) influence the structure and bonding of matter (11). Recent developments in shock-free dynamic (ramp) compression now allow laboratory access to this dense matter regime. Here we describe ramp-compression measurements for diamond, achieving 3.7-fold compression at a peak pressure of 5 terapascals (equivalent to 50 million atmospheres). These equation-of-state data can now be compared to first-principles density functional calculations (12) and theories long used to describe matter present in the interiors of giant planets, in stars, and in inertial-confinement fusion experiments. Abstract

Quantification of system dynamics is a central aim of mathematical modelling in biology. Defining experimentally supported functional relationships between molecular entities by mathematical terms enables the application of computational routines to simulate and analyse the underlying molecular system. In many fields of natural sciences and engineering, trigonometric functions are applied to describe oscillatory processes. As biochemical oscillations occur in many aspects of biochemistry and biophysics, Fourier analysis of metabolic functions promises to quantify, describe and analyse metabolism and its reaction towards environmental fluctuations. Here, Fourier polynomials were developed from experimental time-series data and combined with block diagram simulation of plant metabolism to study heat shock response of photosynthetic CO2 assimilation and carbohydrate metabolism. Findings suggest that increased capacities of starch biosynthesis stabilize photosynthetic CO2 assimilation under transient heat exposure. Among soluble sugars, fructose concentrations were observed to fluctuate least under heat exposure which might be the consequence of high respiration rates under elevated temperature. Finally, Col-0 and two mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana with deficiencies in starch and sucrose metabolism were discriminated by fundamental frequencies of Fourier polynomials across different experiments. This suggests balance modelling based on Fourier polynomials as a suitable approach for mathematical analysis of dynamic plant-environment interactions.HighlightA balance equation model is developed to quantify effects of transient heat exposure on plant carbon assimilation. Abstract

Nanoporous (np) metals have generated much interest since they combine several desirable material characteristics, such as high surface area, mechanical size effects, and high conductivity. Most of the research has been focused on np Au due to its relatively straightforward synthesis, chemical stability, and many promising applications in the fields of catalysis and actuation. Other materials, such as np-Cu, Ag, and Pd have also been studied. This review discusses recent advances in the field of np metals, focusing on new research areas that implement and leverage structural hierarchy while using np metals as their base structural constituents. First, we focus on single-element porous metals that are made of np metals at the fundamental level, but synthesized with additional levels of porosity. Second, we discuss the fabrication of composite structures, which use auxiliary materials to enhance the properties of np metals. Important applications of these hierarchical materials, especially in the fields of catalysis and electrochemistry, are also reviewed. Finally, we conclude with a discussion about future opportunities for the advancement and application of np metals.
