5. A New Coupled Ocean-Waves-Atmosphere Model Designed for Tropical Storm Studies: Example of Tropical Cyclone Bejisa (2013-2014) in the South-West Indian Ocean

Abstract

Ocean-Waves-Atmosphere (OWA) exchanges are not well represented in current Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) systems, which can lead to large uncertainties in tropical cyclone track and intensity forecasts. In order to explore and better understand the impact of OWA interactions on tropical cyclone modelling, a fully coupled OWA system based on the atmospheric model Meso-NH, the oceanic model CROCO and the wave model WW3 and called MSWC was designed and applied to the case of tropical cyclone Bejisa (2013-2014). The fully coupled OWA simulation shows good agreement with the literature and available observations. In particular, simulated significant wave height is within 30 cm of measurements made with buoys and altimeters. Short-term (< 2 days) sensitivity experiments used to highlight the effect of oceanic waves coupling showlimited impact on the track, the intensity evolution and the turbulent surface fluxes of the tropical cyclone. However, it is also shown that using a fully coupled OWA system is essential to obtain consistent sea salt emissions. Spatial and temporal coherence of the sea state with the 10m-wind speed are necessary to produce sea salt aerosol emissions in the right place (in the eyewall of the tropical cyclone) and with the right size distribution, which is critical for cloud microphysics.

Abstract

The Convective and Orographically-driven Precipitation Study (COPS) carried out in summer 2007 over northeastern France and southwestern Germany provided a fairly comprehensive description of the low-troposphere water-vapour field, thanks in particular to the deployment of two airborne differential absorption lidar systems. These lidar observations were assimilated using the 3D-Var assimilation system of the Application of Research to Operations at MEsoscale (AROME) numerical weather prediction mesoscale model. The assimilation was carried out for the period 4 July-3 August by running a three-hour forward intermittent assimilation cycle. First, the impact of the lidar observations was assessed by comparing the analyses with a set of more than 200 independent soundings. The lidar observations were found to have a positive impact on the analyses by reducing the dry bias in the first 500 m above ground level and by diminishing the root-mean-square error by roughly 15% in the first km. Then the impact of the lidar observations was assessed by comparing the precipitation forecasts (obtained with and without the lidar observations for the period 15 July-2 August) with the gridded precipitation observations provided by the Vienna Enhanced Resolution Analysis. In general, the impact was found to be positive but not significant for the 24 h precipitation and positive and significant for the 6 h precipitation, with an improvement lasting up to 24 h. Some selected case studies show that the improvement was obtained through a better depiction of convection initiation or through a more accurate positioning of the precipitation systems. © 2011 Royal Meteorological Society.

Abstract

The STRAP (Synergie Transdisciplinaire pour Répondre aux Aléas liés aux Panaches volcaniques) campaign was conducted in 2015 to investigate the volcanic plumes of Piton de La Fournaise (La Réunion, France). For the first time, measurements at the local (near the vent) and at the regional scales around the island were conducted. The STRAP 2015 campaign has become possible thanks to a strong cross-disciplinary collaboration between volcanologists and meteorologists. The main observations during four eruptive periods (85 days) are summarized. They include the estimates of SO2, CO2 and H2O emissions, the altitude of the plume at the vent and over different areas of La Réunion Island, the evolution of the SO2 concentration, the aerosol size distribution, and the aerosol extinction profile. A climatology of the volcanic plume dispersion is also reported. Simulations and measurements showed that the plume formed by weak eruption has a stronger interaction with the surface of the island. Strong SO2 and particles concentrations above 1000 ppb and 50 000 cm−3, respectively, are frequently measured over 20 km of distance from the Piton de la Fournaise. The measured aerosol size distribution shows the predominance of small particles in the volcanic plume. A particular emphasis is placed on the gas-particle conversion with several cases of strong nucleation of sulfuric acid observed within the plume and at the distal site of the Maïdo observatory. The STRAP 2015 campaign gave a unique set of multi-disciplinary data that can now be used by modellers to improve the numerical paramameterizations of the physical and chemical evolution of the volcanic plumes.

Abstract

Objectives: Defining professional competence and identifying the best way to evaluate these skills has become a topic of study for physiotherapists. The aims of this study were: (1) to reveal and compare the level of competence declared by physiotherapy students with that of professional physiotherapists in the investigated competencies, and (2) to show any associations between the level of competences of physiotherapists and their age or education level., Design: A descriptive cross-sectional survey., Methods: A sample of 273 physiotherapists and 84 physiotherapy students executed self-assessment of their competences using a Likert scale., Results: Students declared a lower level of self-assessed competence (mean 2.76) than physiotherapists (mean 3.20), but some items regarding the ICF model and evidence-based practice (EBP) had higher scores for students than professionals. In the field of EBP, both groups showed insufficient scores for all items. For the investigated skills, we observed an association between the level of declared competence and age and education level (p<0.05)., Conclusions: Survey results could be used by academies, professional associations, and employers to identify specific learning goals of students and physiotherapists.

26. Meaningful improvement in walking performance after Botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT-A) in chronic spastic patients.

Abstract

Background: Botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT-A) may reduce lower limb spasticity but its role in improving walking ability remains to be established., Objective: To investigate the efficacy of simultaneous BoNT-A injections into several targeted spastic muscles of different joints on gait speed and on functional gains in gait performance in chronic stroke and MS patients., Methods: Twenty patients affected by stroke or multiple sclerosis were tested before, one and three months after BoNT-A administration. Gait was evaluated by the 10 Meter Walk Test; patients were stratified into functional ambulation classes accordingly. Spasticity was assessed using the modified Ashworth Scale., Results: At final assessment, spasticity was reduced in hip adductors and ankle plantar-flexors, gait speed improved and, 1/3rd of patients transitioned to a higher ambulation class. The pre-post difference in Level of Spasticity of the hips was a predictor for an increase in gait speed., Conclusions: A meaningful improvement in walking performance can be obtained in chronic spastic patients after BoNT-A injection into several muscles, specifically the hip adductors.

Abstract

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is caused by insufficient levels of the survival motor neuron (SMN) protein leading to muscle paralysis and respiratory failure. In mouse, introducing the human SMN2 gene partially rescues Smn(-)(/)(-) embryonic lethality. However current models were either too severe or nearly unaffected precluding convenient drug testing for SMA. We report here new SMN2;Smn(-/-) lines carrying one to four copies of the human SMN2 gene. Mice carrying three SMN2 copies exhibited an intermediate phenotype with delayed appearance of motor defects and developmental breathing disorders reminiscent of those found in severe SMA patients. Although normal at birth, at 7 days of age respiratory rate was decreased and apnea frequency was increased in SMA mice in parallel with the appearance of neuromuscular junction defects in the diaphragm. With median survival of 15 days and postnatal onset of neurodegeneration, these mice could be an important tool for evaluating new therapeutics., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.)
