Biodiversity should not be understood in biological terms only and as a thing apart from society, but rather as biocultural diversity present in the social world and in various cultures. Such a perspective might allow to relieve social conflicts as well as abuses of power, and slow the appropriation of the biosphere. This volume of the Handbook »The Anthropocene as Multiple Crisis« focuses on biodiversity in the main macro-regions of Latin America from the colonial regime to the contemporary era of the Anthropocene. The contributions enrich contemporary debates surrounding the genealogy of the Anthropocene in Latin America with critical perspectives from the social sciences and the humanities.

How has faith developed in the US and German societies across the last decades? In a three-wave longitudinal investigation of faith development, this study presents the changes of worldview and meaning-making that people associate with their religious, spiritual, agnostic and atheist identifications. For almost two decades, research teams in Chattanooga (USA) and Bielefeld (Germany) have invited and re-invited hundreds of people to participate in a personal interview and to answer an extensive questionnaire in order to better understand the reasons and the consequences of their continuity or discontinuity in religious, spiritual, or non-theistic faith.

Socio-ecological conflicts about land use in Latin America are complex: they involve various actors and flare up due to the dynamics of colonization, spatial appropriation, and the commodification of land. This volume of the Handbook »The Anthropocene as Multiple Crisis« focuses on land use in the main macro-regions of Latin America from the colonial regime to the contemporary era of the Anthropocene. The contributions touch upon numerous aspects, from the transformations of material to the social practices, their political and legal regulations as well as the imaginaries of virgin territories. Consequently, far from limiting themselves to a static cartography of land use, the contributors investigate the appropriations of borders and historic transformations in land use.

Comparisons affect various ways of perceiving and interpreting the world, characterized by distinct legitimization strategies and knowledge application routines by different actors. The contributors to this volume explore the link between change and practices of comparing, focusing on order, representation, and models. They delve into how comparing influences knowledge production, but also focus on persisting orders of knowledge. This collection centers on the role of models and modeling in relation to practices of comparing, thus highlighting the representational and operational force of comparing as a way to form and organize reality.

Die Rahmenbedingungen für Projekte in den Digital Humanities können herausfordernd sein: Zum einen ist die Innovationserwartung beteiligter Institutionen und Fördergeber ungebremst. Zum anderen bedürfen die Koordination interdisziplinärer, komplexer Großvorhaben sowie der Aufbau von Forschungsinfrastruktur und -services einer Professionalisierung des Projektmanagements. Die Beiträger*innen geben Einblicke in unterschiedliche Praktiken und versammeln Sichtweisen aus der Fachcommunity. Damit gehen sie den ersten Schritt, um das Tätigkeitsfeld in den deutschsprachigen Fachdiskurs zu holen - und zeigen durch theoriegeleitete Reflexionen methodologische Ansätze zu einer Weiterentwicklung des Wissenschaftsmanagements auf.

Wie vergleichen wir, wenn wir lesen? Und wie lesen wir, wenn wir vergleichen? Die hier versammelten Beiträge widmen sich Verknüpfungen und Interferenzen zwischen Praktiken des Vergleichens und Praktiken des Lesens. Zentral für ihre Analysen sind drei Diskursfelder, in denen Literatur vergleichend gelesen wird: die Literaturwissenschaft, die Literaturkritik und die Literatur selbst. Im Fokus steht dabei, wie Praktiken des Vergleichens zwischen diesen Feldern zirkulieren und sich auf die Lektüre von Literatur auswirken - und wie vergleichendes Lesen in diesem Prozess Literatur als epistemisches, ästhetisches oder soziales Objekt hervorbringt.

Die horizontale Produktion von Wissen, so macht sie deutlich, bezieht sich stattdessen auf die Kraft sozialen Wissens, also auf den disziplinären Dialog der vielfältigen Stimmen, die mit sozialen Problemen und ihrer Lösung konfrontiert sind. Forschung, die horizontal auf soziale Fragen eingeht, trägt dazu bei, diesen Zusammenhang genauer zu beleuchten: Sie schafft neues Wissen, aber auch neue Beziehungen zwischen Menschen.

Faith Development Interviews offer great insight into people's ways of (non-)religious meaning-making, and of looking at their life and relationships. Ramona Bullik portrays nine longitudinal case studies in a mixed-methods design with narrative analysis granting insight into the developments and stabilities in the interviews. The focus on religious married couples allows to carve out the role of faith and the changing view on the spouse and the joint life. The portraits of three non-religious women show how meaning is made outside the frame of organized religion. Individual survey data are put into relation with a larger sample, answering the claim for idiothetic research.

Colombia ha enfrentado una historia de violencia y desigualdad, con líderes asesinados, masacres y abusos perpetrados por grupos paramilitares, guerrillas y fuerzas estatales. Un ejemplo reciente son las manifestaciones del paro nacional a finales de abril de 2021, surgidas por el aumento de impuestos de productos esenciales y que fueron marcadas por la brutal represión policial. La violencia y despojo de tierras han sido experiencias cotidianas en la vida de muchos colombianos, particularmente en las zonas rurales y empobrecidas. En este libro, Eduardo Restrepo argumenta que la desigualdad y violencia en Colombia están arraigadas en un orden moral jerarquizado que produce existencias »dispensables«, marcadas por el desprecio y la indiferencia. Aunque el análisis se centra en ese país, sugiere que esta dinámica también puede ser relevante en otros países de América Latina. Restrepo aboga por la importancia de un compromiso ético-político en la elaboración de narrativas más comprensivas sobre los problemas sociales y las luchas por el cambio.

The richness of social and cultural theory in the humanities offers countless opportunities for using theory-informed concepts in data-based analysis workflows. En esta obra se aborda la situación de violencia y desigualdad que enfrentan los periodistas en América Latina, centrándose en el caso de México por ser este el país en donde se ha asesinado a un mayor número de comunicadores en los últimos 22 años. El enfoque se dirige hacia los periodistas de frontera, aquellos que trabajan en los márgenes físicos, políticos, económicos, culturales y tecnológicos de un territorio, y cuya condición no puede entenderse únicamente como un reflejo de lo que ocurre a nivel nacional o internacional, ya que presentan características propias y particularidades que los modelos existentes no logran explicar. Además, se explora el contexto histórico y político en el que los periodistas han ejercido su labor, incluyendo las transiciones democráticas y los regímenes autoritarios, y se destaca el impacto de la guerra contra el narcotráfico en la violencia ejercida hacia ellos en México. La autora enfatiza en la necesidad de adoptar nuevos marcos de análisis para comprender la situación de los periodistas de frontera, tomando en cuenta los márgenes del estado, la esfera pública a nivel microlocal y la capacidad que tienen para enfrentar las crisis.

Plausibilisierung und Evidenz sind nicht nur für den akademischen Diskurs unverzichtbar, sondern spielen auch im Alltag eine große Rolle. Die Beiträger*innen nehmen Plausibilisierungs- und Evidenzpraktiken als dynamische Prozesse in unterschiedlichen Zusammenhängen in den Blick. Dabei beleuchten sie, wie diese Prozesse ausgelöst werden und warum sie so erfolgreich sind. Der sowohl historische wie auch systematische Zugang adressiert die Thematik in interdisziplinärer Spannweite und verspricht vielfältige Anknüpfungspunkte, die inner- und außerhalb der Wissenschaft relevant sind.

The digital transformation is accompanied by two simultaneous processes: digital humanities challenging the humanities, their theories, methodologies and disciplinary identities, and pushing computer science to get involved in new fields. But how can qualitative and quantitative methods be usefully combined in one research project? What are the theoretical and methodological principles across all disciplinary digital approaches? This volume focusses on driving innovation and conceptualising the humanities in the 21st century. Building on the results of 10 research projects, it serves as a useful tool for designing cutting-edge research that goes beyond conventional strategies.

Worin liegen die ästhetischen Eigenlogiken der Gattung des Genrebildes, also Darstellungen von Alltagsszenen mit anonymen und meist typisierten Figuren? Seit dem 16. Jahrhundert wurde diese Gattung in der Malerei populär. Sie erlangte ihr künstlerisches Profil in einem Prozess des Dialogs mit und der Abgrenzung von der Reproduktionsgraphik, der Historienmalerei sowie den anderen im Entstehen begriffenen Bildgattungen. Die Beiträger*innen bereichern die kunsthistorische Forschung zum europäischen Genrebild von der Frühen Neuzeit bis zur Moderne um ikonographische, rezeptionsästhetische und bildwissenschaftliche Aspekte. Dabei stellen sie insbesondere Bildphänomene und künstlerische Strategien der Temporalität, der Ambiguität und der Latenz als spezifische Dimensionen dieser Gattung ins Zentrum ihrer Analysen und liefern so eine Neuperspektivierung der Genremalerei.

Historical research can be enhanced by methods and resources from various disciplines, ranging from psychology to computer linguistics. With a creative and innovative perspective on »things we think we know«, Milan van Lange presents a computer-assisted historical investigation into the role of emotions in dealing with consequences of World War II in the Netherlands. By »emotion mining« digitised sources, van Lange shows where emotions were present and how they were expressed and discussed in the political engagement with people who experienced long-term effects of the war, such as former collaborators and war criminals, the resistance, and war victims.

Immer häufiger geben demokratische Gegenwartsgesellschaften Inklusionsversprechen ab, ohne sie einzulösen zu können. Verdeckung als analytische Kategorie ermöglicht es, Ambivalenzen sowie Gründe und Genese dieser Ein- und Ausschlussverhältnisse zu untersuchen. Daraus folgt keine Abkehr von Einschlussbemühungen, vielmehr ist die Auseinandersetzung mit Verdeckung essentiell für eine Gesellschaft, die aus kontingenztheoretischer Perspektive an ihrer normativen Semantik scheitern muss. In einer erziehungswissenschaftlichen, soziologischen und politikwissenschaftlichen Annäherung erkunden und konturieren die Beiträger*innen Verdeckungen interdisziplinär.

Der Historiker Reinhart Koselleck hat neben seinem schriftlichen Nachlass und einer bemerkenswerten Fotosammlung auch eine Anzahl von Figuren und anderen Gegenständen hinterlassen. Seine Sammlung umfasst rund 140 Objekte unterschiedlichster Art: Zinnsoldaten, Büsten und Miniaturdenkmäler, vor allem aber Pferde- und Reiterfiguren. Die Beiträger*innen verbinden die erste Dokumentation der außergewöhnlichen Sammlung mit einer wissenschaftlichen Bestandsaufnahme. Sie gehen der Frage nach, welche Rolle die gesammelten Objekte in Kosellecks Denkraum spielten und welche neuen Zugänge zu historischer Medialität und zur Frage nach dem Potenzial von Geschichtsdingen sie eröffnen können.

El cine constituye una poderosa herramienta cultural que opera de múltiples maneras en el rescate de memorias, así como en la reparación colectiva y conceptualización interdisciplinaria de experiencias traumáticas en comunidades devastadas por sistemáticas violaciones a sus derechos fundamentales. Hace perceptibles las prolongaciones de silenciadas o legitimadas violencias políticas tanto en el individuo como en el tejido social trastornado por perturbadoras marcas que desbaratan la existencia y la convivencia. Las expresiones cinematográficas no hacen referencia al ayer únicamente, sino que, sobre todo, cuestionan las pautas convencionales empleadas para articular pasado, presente y futuro a fin de explorar horizontes posibles. Como detonadoras de memoria y generadoras de conciencia, robustecen diferentes modi memorandi que tratan el pasado violento demasiado activo aún.

Hate is being reinvented. Over the last two decades, online platforms have been used to repackage racist, sexist and xenophobic ideologies into new sociotechnical forms. Digital hate is ancient but novel, deploying the Internet to boost its allure and broaden its appeal. To understand the logic of hate, Luke Munn investigates four objects: 8chan, the cesspool of the Internet, QAnon, the popular meta-conspiracy, Parler, a social media site, and Gab, the »platform for the people.« Drawing together powerful human stories with insights from media studies, psychology, political science, and race and cultural studies, he portrays how digital hate infiltrates hearts and minds.

La autoría en autobiografías escritas por personas de origen africano, esclavizadas en América durante los siglos XVIII y XIX, no es carente de conflictividad. Durante siglos el uso del Yo, como voz referencial de autor fue una entidad privilegiada mediante relatos impresos elaborados por los propios protagonistas mientras se daba por sentado que el resto de vidas solo merecían permanecer confinadas en ámbitos estrictamente privados por ser consideradas vacías, vulgares, irrelevantes, dignas de ínfima atención pública. Gerardo Cham aborda los casos de tres autores y a una autora, cuyas narrativas testimoniales tuvieron gran difusión desde que fueron escritas: Olaudah Equiano, Mary Prince, Juan Francisco Manzano y Mahomma Gardo Baquaqua.

Across the globe, a growing number of social movements, such as demonstrations in support of equal civil status or reproductive freedom and against sexualized violence, show that women's and gender rights are highly contested. Against the backdrop of a long history of unequal rights implementation, the contributors to this volume deal with the questions of why and in which ways gender equality has become contested in various political contexts. Local case studies examine the relevant structural, institutional, and socio-cultural causes of the global challenges to equality. Religious studies have long discussed the comparative notion of »holy« beyond religious, cultural, and linguistic boundaries. In this book, Thomas Jurczyk conducts a diachronic comparison of the meaning and application of two notions and their related word fields that are commonly associated with a broader comparative notion of holy, namely the Ancient Armenian term »surb« and its related words and the English word field associated with »holy«. To compare these two semantic fields, his methodological approach operates on the principle of distributional semantics and applies, among others, tools and methods from the field of corpus linguistics.

Why did »equality« become prominent in European societies based on hierarchy during the Enlightenment? What does »equality« imply for societies, politics, or legal systems? The contributors to this volume draw on various historical case studies, from visionary practices in revolutionary France and the collection of data on the poor in 19th-century Germany, to claims raised under the minority regime of the League of Nations and the anti-discrimination politics of the UN and India. The dynamics of universalizing equality are contrasted with a concept asserting that equality must be limited to and by order. The contributions thus explore concepts of equality from the perspectives of history and law and show that practices of comparing were essential when it came to imagining others as equal, fighting discrimination, or scandalizing social inequalities.

Abordar la existencia de unas clases medias negras en Colombia no sólo es difícil sino un aparente contrasentido, un oxímoron, porque la gente negra es imaginada como inevitablemente pobre y de »clase baja«. Pero ¿acaso no existen otras experiencias de clase dentro de esta población? Para responder al vacío investigativo sobre este grupo social este libro examina la configuración de las clases medias negras desde finales de los años treinta del siglo xx, a partir de las historias de vida de miembros de tres generaciones de familias originarias de la región del Pacífico y el Caribe que se identifican como parte de esta clase. Esta indagación se hace desde una perspectiva interseccional, que asume que no se puede entender el funcionamiento de las relaciones de poder que dan forma a estas experiencias desde un solo marco explicativo (de clase, género o raza), y que para hacerlo se deben considerar sus mutuas interrelaciones y afectaciones.

Este libro es un ensayo extendido sobre las dinámicas de desarrollo y resistencia desatadas por los avances del extractivismo, una forma de capitalismo que se caracteriza por una crisis multidimensional de alcance global. El extractivismo toma diversas formas, pero el epicentro en su más reciente encarnación es América Latina. La región ha sido el principal blanco de sus impactos socioecológicos negativos, pero también el escenario de las fuerzas más poderosas de resistencia. El autor aborda tres dimensiones críticas de este proceso, incluyendo la nueva geoeconomía y geopolítica del capital, las resistencias en la frontera extractiva y las alternativas propuestas por los gobiernos formados en el »ciclo progresista« en la política, y construidos desde abajo por las comunidades indígenas y no indígenas en la frontera. Finalmente, cierra con una reflexión sobre la posibilidad de una transición postextractivista a un otro mundo de solidaridad social y armonía con la naturaleza, en condiciones de justicia social y ecológica.

Digital archives are transforming the Humanities and the Sciences. Digitized collections of newspapers and books have pushed scholars to develop new, data-rich methods. Born-digital archives are now better preserved and managed thanks to the development of open-access and commercial software. Digital Humanities have moved from the fringe to the center of academia. Yet, the path from the appraisal of records to their analysis is far from smooth. This book explores crossovers between various disciplines to improve the discoverability, accessibility, and use of born-digital archives and other cultural assets.

What distinguishes an adventure novel from a historical novel? Can the same text belong to several genres? More to one than to another? Have some existing genres been overlooked? To answer these and similar questions, José Calvo Tello combines methods from Linguistics (lexicography), Literary Studies (genre theory), and Computer Science (machine learning, natural language processing). Located in the interdisciplinary field of Digital Humanities, this study analyzes a newly developed corpus of 358 Spanish novels of the silver age (1880-1939), which includes authors like Baroja, Pardo Bazán, or Valle-Inclán. Calvo Tello's key result is a graph-based model of literary genre that reconciles recent theoretical approaches.

Los regímenes progresistas se encuentran en una profunda crisis. Quien no se contenta con denunciar las previsibles maquinaciones del »imperialismo«, debe buscar las razones internas del fracaso del proclamado »socialismo del siglo XXI«. ¿Por qué tales regímenes, que deben su aparición y sus éxitos iniciales en gran medida a la movilización de las masas, no han podido mantener el apoyo activo de una mayoría de la población? La respuesta se busca aquí recurriendo al historial de la izquierda latinoamericana. El objetivo es mostrar cómo el concepto organizativo de Lenin ha llegado a América Latina, comenzando con las intervenciones de la Internacional Comunista. Se examina si este legado también ha influido en los protagonistas del »progresismo« y de qué manera. La reflexión en la parte principal se basa en el papel central de Hugo Chávez y su relación ambivalente con la herencia histórica de la izquierda.

As a powerful tool in the production of knowledge, comparing plays a crucial part in the sciences and the humanities. This volume explores the relationship between comparing and narrating in epistemic practices and clarifies the ways in which narratives enable or impede practices of comparing. It takes into account related activities, such as measuring and classifying, modeling, establishing norms and categories, as well as organizing and popularizing knowledge, to analyze the ambivalent relationship between narratives, scientific explanation, and understanding. The contributions bring out the epistemic role of narratives, and elucidate how narratives are connected to comparisons and scientific explanations.

Luhmann's theory is fascinating and complex. It offers incomparably enlightening insights, references and research opportunities, but reveals its utility only after a quite high competence threshold. Using the reticular form of the glossary, this book makes the theory accessible while maintaining its complexity. Without being obstructed by knowledge gaps or by references to concepts presented elsewhere, readers inside and outside sociology get the required support to explore sociological systems theory and to engage with it. Luhmann himself, in his introduction, praises the form of the glossary to cope with the challenges of the theoretical description of our highly complex society.

América Latina atraviesa una marcada crisis ambiental, que está llevando al subcontinente a un colapso, entendido este como un cambio en la sociedad, y en la forma de vivir en la actualidad. Esta crisis ecológica se ha visto ahondada con la profundización del modelo económico neoliberal y del neoextractivismo, el cual ha generado una disputa por los bienes comunes. Al mismo tiempo en distintos territorios de la región se están desarrollando alternativas agroecológicas, cooperativas, redes de economía solidaria, eco-tecnologías apropiadas y nuevas construcciones societales basadas en paradigmas como el buen vivir, que van sembrando esperanzas de evitar el colapso, bajo el desarrollo de sociedades en movimiento que reflexionan y actúan en defensa de la madre tierra.

Politik steht zunehmend unter dem Einfluss von Religion, insbesondere in Nord- und Südamerika. Führer der evangelikal-pfingstlichen Bewegung verschaffen sich dort immer mehr politische Macht und bilden eine religiöse Rechte. Aus dem Leiden an sozialer Ungleichheit formen sie ein rückschrittliches Wählerpotenzial und durchlöchern die Grenze zwischen Religion und säkularer Politik. Dagegen positionieren sich auf der Linken religiöse Graswurzelbewegungen, die die Erfahrungen sozialer Ungleichheit in ethischen Protest umleiten. Heinrich Wilhelm Schäfer analysiert diese religiös-politischen Kämpfe um gesellschaftliche Macht und Laizität in den Amerikas und diskutiert die Möglichkeiten eines post-säkularen Dialogs.

Im Spannungsfeld des Medienwechsels von der gedruckten zur digitalen Edition wirken komplexe und oft konfligierende Kräfte. Aus der Perspektive der Informatik identifiziert Andreas Oberhoff die Ursprünge und Wechselwirkungen dieser Kräfte, präzisiert sie als wesentliche Konflikte und analysiert sie systematisierend durch Adaption etablierter Konzepte. Gestützt auf diese theoretischen Erkenntnisse leitet er technische Anforderungen an moderne Editionsinfrastrukturen ab, entwickelt innovative Konfliktlösungsstrategien (u.a. mit Hilfe von Blockchain-Technologien) und stellt auf Basis der Revisionssicherheit erstmals eine Methodik für die bewertende Einordnung dieses austarierenden Technikeinsatzes bereit.
