Abstract

NASA initiated the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program for flights to the lunar surface. Astrobotic was awarded a NASA contract to accommodate NASA payloads onto their Peregrine lander Astrobotic Mission One (ABM-1). ABM-1 is scheduled to land near Lacus Mortis, 44°N 25°E, in 2021. The Near-InfraRed Volatile Spectrometer System (NIRVSS) has evolved over time and was chosen as a NASA payload for ABM-1 and the flight model is scheduled to be delivered to Astrobotic at the end of March 2020.

Abstract

NASA's Resource Prospector (RP) mission is intended to characterize the three-dimensional nature of volatiles in lunar polar regions and permanently shadowed regions. RP is slated to carry two instruments for prospecting purposes. These include the Neutron Spectrometer System (NSS) and Near-Infrared Volatile Spectrometer System (NIRVSS). A Honybee Robotics drill (HRD) is intended to sample to depths of 1 m, and deliver a sample to a crucible that is processed by the Oxygen Volatile Extraction Node (OVEN) where the soil is heated and evolved gas is delivered to the gas chromatograph / mass spectrometer of the Lunar Advanced Volatile Analysis system (LAVA). For several years, tests of various sub-systems have been undertaken in a large cryo-vacuum chamber facility (VF-13) located at Glenn Research Center. In these tests a large tube (1.2 m high x 25.4 cm diameter) is filled with lunar simulant, NU-LHT-3M, prepared with known abundances of water. There are thermo-couples embedded at different depths, and also across the surface of the soil tube. The soil tube is placed in the chamber and cooled with LN2 as the pressure is reduced to approx.5-6x10(exp -6) Torr. Here we discuss May 2016 tests where two soil tubes were prepared and placed in the chamber. Also located in the chamber were 5 crucibles, an Inficon mass spectrometer, and a trolly permitting x-y translation, where the HRD and NIRVSS, were mounted. The shroud surrounding the soil tube was held at different temperatures for each tube to simulate a warm and cold lunar environment.

Abstract

Recently, there has been a growing trend towards an ever greater use of composite materials in aircraft structures. This necessitates a search for effective ways of joining these materials. The desirable characteristics of such joints are predominantly high strength and low mass, both of which are features offered by rivet nuts. The study was conducted on one type of glass fabric material, from which two types of composite specimens were prepared. Each specimen used the same type of fibre of the same number of 3 layers, yet of different lay-up. Specimens were joined with aluminium alloy and steel rivet nuts to produce single and multi-row parallel models of riveted joints for further testing and analysis. The specimens were clamped in the grips of tensile machine and subjected to a tensile strength test. In the work, the course of the forces in the rivet nuts joint and the failure modes and effects of joint failure were analysed. The distribution of vertical displacement was examined according to the joint material and two fibre orientation variants. To determine the distribution of displacements, the FE (Finite Element) method was used. Upon completion of the experimental stage, the obtained results were subjected to comparative analysis. 12. Occurrence and distribution of sucrose-metabolizing enzymes in oral streptococci

Abstract

Specific growth rates, growth yields, and the level and cellular distribution of three sucrose-metabolizing enzyme activities were determined for seven oral streptococci (Streptococcus mutans strains E49, BHT, 10449, SL-1, and LM-7, S. sanguis 10558, and S. salivarius 25975). Cultures were grown in a fermentor at pH 6 with either 20 mM glucose or 10 mM sucrose.Generation times varied between 21 and 70 min. Whereas some strains grew 10 to 50% more slowly with sucrose than with glucose, others did not. Growth was always logarithmic, and the growth yields were similar. Glcosyl transferase (EC 2.4.1.5) was largely extracellular; in sucrose cultures it was appreciably lower, but no major shift to a cell-associated form was found. In glucose cultures, the activity varied between 4 and 140 IU per 6-liter culture. The glucan formed was mostly or exclusively water insoluble. Glcosyl transferase was stimulated weakly (60% or less) by various dextrans. Fructosyl transferase (EC 2.4.1.10) was primarily extracellular (except in glucose cultures of S. salivarius) and varied between 0 and 337 IU/culture. In S. salivarius, the extracellular fructosyl transferase was induced by sucrose. In all S. Mutans cultures, the total fructosyl transferase activity was lower after growth with sucrose. All strains had extra- and intracellular invertase (EC 3.2.1.26) activity. Total levels varied between 210 and 3,500 IU/culture. Less extracellular activity was present in sucrose cultures. Only S. salivarius had appreciable activity in the cellular particulate fraction. Invertase activity was significantly higher than the combined glucosyl and fructosyl transferase activities in all cultures.
