1. Getting Them Done: A Qualitative Study of Characteristics of Mentors Successful in Graduating Online Students in a Distance Education Context

Abstract

Many doctoral students in online distance education programs are nontraditional students who require mentoring needs that may be different from traditional students. Additionally, time to completion is becoming more important as student debt is a growing public concern. The purpose of the study was to allow faculty (N = 22) in a for-profit, distance education university who have demonstrated ability to work at scale and have an excellent record of graduating doctoral students to give voice to the characteristics they felt were important to the mentoring relationship. 5 themes emerged: (a) regular and proactive communication; (b) building a trusting and empathic relationship with students; (c) timely, substantive, and specific feedback; (d) accountability; and (e) expertise in research, scholarly writing, and knowledge of internal and external resources. Several characteristics of excellent mentors are provided that can be used as a tool for faculty development and training.

The article discusses issue of collaboration in the public administration and management. It discusses paradoxical approach for managing complexity of collaboration. Various other analysis has been conducted for analyzing its paradoxical features including environmental policy, litigation, stakeholder issues and contestation. It also discusses a previous case which was related to challenges faced by the U.S. politics in controlling pollution in the country.

Abstract

The article describes an instance of instructional challenge in a nontraditional political science classroom and the techniques employed to meet that challenge, focusing on the experience of the University at Albany in New York affiliated Intergovernmental Solutions Program (IGSP). The IGSP prototype courses, Designing and Implementing Programs in the Intergovernmental Zone and Perspectives on Building Communities: Citizens, Organizations, and Intergovernmental Systems, created an interactive, dynamic and motivating learning situation.

9. Taking Metaphors Seriously: An Interpretive Account of a Local Policy.

Abstract

Metaphors have been credited with the capacity to structure our thoughts, govern our activities, and enable our reasoning from the familiar to the unfamiliar (Lacoff and Johnson 2003; Rein and Schön 1977). In the words of the organizational theorist Gareth Morgan (1986), "the use of metaphors implies a way of thinking and a way of seeing that pervade how we understand our world generally." Yet, with a few notable exceptions (Yanow 1996, 2000), rarely have metaphors been "taken seriously" in analyses of public policies. Commonly seen as mere "rhetorical devices" that ostensibly could not stand empirical validation and conceptual scrutiny aimed at causation, metaphors have remained generally marginalized in the public policy literature; their meaning-making and meaning-carrying capabilities - largely ignored. The current paper explores a locally crafted policy initiative - the Patuxent River, Maryland water quality improvement strategy that has received national recognition as a "landmark case" in collaborative environmental action (D'Elia 1992; Hodge 1987) and tries to inquire into the contextual significance of the metaphor of the "white sneakers" as a lens for seeing and understanding the process of policy making in that case. In the spirit of Miller's (2002) post-modern conceptualization of public policy as grounded in practice and experience, Clandinin and Connely's (2000) "narrative" approach to data collection and presentation, and Yanow and Schwartz-Shea's (2006) interpretive turn in empirical research methods, the paper taps into the "lived experience" of one of the principal scientists involved in the Patuxent River case. Against the backdrop of his detailed "personal story," constructed on the basis of ethnographic interviews and field research of archival records and media coverage, the discussion tries to show why taking metaphors seriously in policy studies makes sense - descriptively, analytically and practically. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
