Every data packet routed over the internet finds its route based on decisions within the BGP protocol. In 2022 there are already over 100 000 AS numbers registered with an authority in order to participate in BGP routing. With such an important routing protocol as BGP, it is clearly essential to think about what happens if one of the routes should fail for physical or logical reasons. BGP requires at least two different connections to different BGP partners for correct installation. This ensures that several routes can always lead to one destination. However, the question now arises as to how long it takes in BGP until the failure of one path is detected and another path is accepted. In order to answer this question, a physical as well as a logical failure is examined, and the convergence time is measured. Also considered is the most commonly used protocol to reduce convergence times in BGP, the Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD). David Hasenhüttl Bachelorarbeit FH JOANNEUM 2022
