Reporting a measurement procedure and its analytical performance following method evaluation in a peer-reviewed journal is an important means for clinical laboratory practi-tioners to share their findings. It also represents an important source of evidence base to help others make informed decisions about their practice. At present, there are significant variations in the information reported in laboratory medicine journal publications describ-ing the analytical performance of measurement procedures. These variations also chal-lenge authors, readers, reviewers, and editors in deciding the quality of a submitted manu-script. The International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine Working Group on Method Evaluation Protocols (IFCC WG-MEP) developed a checklist and recom-mends its adoption to enable a consistent approach to reporting method evaluation and analytical performance characteristics of measurement procedures in laboratory medicine journals. It is envisioned that the Laboratory Evaluation and Analytical Performance Char-acteristics (LEAP) checklist will improve the standardisation of journal publications describ-ing method evaluation and analytical performance characteristics, improving the quality of the evidence base that is relied upon by practitioners.

This thesis addresses the unresolved issues of responsibility and accountability in autonomous vehicle (AV) development, advocating for human-centred approaches to enhance trustworthiness. While AVs hold the potential for improved safety, mobility, and environmental impact, poorly designed algorithms pose risks, leading to public distrust. Trust research focuses on technology-related aspects but overlooks trust within broader social and cultural contexts. Efforts are underway to understand algorithm design practices, acknowledging their potential unintended consequences. For example, Baumer (2017) advocates human-centred algorithm design (HCAD) to align with user perspectives and reduce risks. HCAD incorporates theoretical, participatory, and speculative approaches, emphasising user and stakeholder engagement. This aligns with broader calls for prioritising societal considerations in technology development (Stilgoe, 2013). The research in this thesis responds to these calls by integrating theories on trust and trustworthiness, autonomous vehicle development, and human-centred approaches in empirical investigations guided by the following research question: “How can human-centred approaches support the development of trustworthy intelligent vehicle technology?” This thesis approaches the question through design ethnography to ground the explorations in people’s real-life routines, practices and anticipations and demonstrate how design ethnographic techniques can infuse AV development with human-centred understandings of people’s trust in AVs. The studies reported in this thesis include a) interviews and participatory observations of algorithm designers, b) interviews and probing with residents, and c) staging collaborative, reflective practice through the design ethnographic materials and co-creation with citizens, city, academic and industry stakeholders, including AV algorithm designers. To analyse large numbers of texts, social science researchers are increasingly confronting the challenge of text classification. When manual labeling is not possible and researchers have to find automatized ways to classify texts, computer science provides a useful toolbox of machine-learning methods whose performance remains understudied in the social sciences. In this article, we compare the performance of the most widely used text classifiers by applying them to a typical research scenario in social science research: a relatively small labeled dataset with infrequent occurrence of categories of interest, which is a part of a large unlabeled dataset. As an example case, we look at Twitter communication regarding climate change, a topic of increasing scholarly interest in interdisciplinary social science research. Using a novel dataset including 5,750 tweets from various international organizations regarding the highly ambiguous concept of climate change, we evaluate the performance of methods in automatically classifying tweets based on whether they are about climate change or not. In this context, we highlight two main findings. First, supervised machine-learning methods perform better than state-of-the-art lexicons, in particular as class balance increases. Second, traditional machine-learning methods, such as logistic regression and random forest, perform similarly to sophisticated deep-learning methods, whilst requiring much less training time and computational resources. At the Mid Sweden University (MiUN) students are expected to cite relevant and domain specific intellectual authorities when writing their papers and theses. To help students achieve this, the University Library at MiUN provides instruction. Here, a proposed approach of improving library instruction is to study the sources which students cite. Extracting references manually is labour intensive and thus unrealistic to undertake systematically. We therefore present a method, using Open Source software (AnyStyle and R), that parses, extracts, and compiles citation data from theses stored in pdf format on an institutional repository, making it possible to perform source analysis and study co-citation patterns. Output from researchers affiliated to the same institution and active within the same field of study as the students can act as a baseline by which comparisons can be performed. These researchers are frequently the students’ teachers, and have therefore potentially played a part in assembling their required reading lists. With this approach we propose that library instruction can be revised and improved using methods frequently employed within research evaluation. Findings can also be forwarded to teachers and course administrators, rendering the library an active partner in course development and assessment. In addition, providing information regarding inter-disciplinary influences that impact students as well as revealing differences between research and educational output.

In this bibliometric study, we analyze two of the six battery research subfields identified in the BATTERY 2030+ roadmap: Materials Acceleration Platform and Smart functionalities: Sensing. In addition, we analyze the entire research field related to BATTERY 2030+ as a whole. We (a) evaluate the European standing in the two subfields/the BATTERY 2030+ field in comparison to the rest of the world, and (b) identify strongholds of the two subfields/the BATTERY 2030+ field across Europe. For each subfield and the field as a whole, we used seed articles, i. e. articles listed in the BATTERY 2030+ roadmap or cited by such articles, in order to generate additional, similar articles located in an algorithmically obtained classification system. This paper reports preliminary results of an on-going study of data papers, a fairly recently introduced type of journal paper designed for documenting and instigating the publishing of research data sets. The aim of the paper is to provide new knowledge on how research processes and practices are described in a set of archaeological data papers selected for analysis. The findings point to a diversity of strategies of how research processes are documented. Explaining factors include the type of data and research where the dataset is stemming from, cross-disciplinary influences from fields outside of archaeology, and the original purpose of data collection and whether it appears that the data was collected for sharing and publishing. The findings point to several possibilities to develop author guidelines for data papers and insights into why and what some types of datasets appear as easier to document than others.

This study contributes to the conference theme of information science processes and practices by examining the research data discovery contexts of ecological and social scientists who reuse datasets for research. The aim of the research was to gain insight into the data discovery contexts of these scientists and to understand the data needs related to data discoverability and reuse. The study identified four dimensions of data needs, including research processes, making sense of data, data reuse, and data access. Additionally, a conceptualization of data needs within the context of data reuse was proposed, which has not been thoroughly examined in previous studies. The study employed a mixed-method approach within the post-positivist research paradigm to identify the different contexts in which data is discovered. A combination of survey and in-depth interview techniques were used to investigate the broader contexts of data discovery in people’s information-seeking processes. The critical incident technique was used to elicit the contexts of data discovery, and the interview protocol was structured based on the stages of a data lifecycle. Interviews were conducted with 24 participants from three organizations, including TERN, ADA, and CSIRO. Participants held diverse job roles and were at different career stages. The study identified four dimensions of data needs and examined their relationship with the roles of data managers and end-users. The findings contribute to the existing literature on data needs and emphasize the potential usefulness of research data and the need for paradata. The study also suggests that anticipating the contexts of data reuse involves considering what data users may find useful. Ensuring data quality is crucial for successful data reuse, which involves having access to organizational data expertise, providing data in various formats and platforms, and ensuring sufficient data coverage. Information literacy research is growing in importance but has been critiqued for remaining focused on practical topics of interest and attainment approaches to practice. Prior attempts to conceptualise information literacy have also often taken place without a comprehensive understanding of the ontological or epistemological foundations of theoretical work. The aim of this panel is to critically examine theory development and use within information literacy research through discussing the ways in which understandings of information literacy, including how it happens and how it shapes social life, are both enabled and constrained through critical, sociomaterial and discursive theoretical approaches. Providing a space to discuss and reflect on the impact of theory on information literacy scholarship, this panel creates a focal point for researchers, practitioners and students interested in the constructionand advancement of conceptually rich information literacy research and practice.

In Sweden, the growing influence of the radical right have turned cultural institutions into political symbols in an emerging ‘culture war’ (Harding, 2021). Carlsson, Hanell & Hansson (2022) show how digital forums and social media play a significant part in orchestrating the ideologically laden conflicts and confrontations that public libraries are currently facing. Digitally mediated threats from the radical right may obstruct the statutory mission of the institution to promote democracy, but knowledge about how such threats develop and unfold, as well as the relation between online interactions and offline events (Scrivens, Davies & Frank, 2020), is lacking. This prompts an investigation of the digital environments where supporters of radical right-wing ideas interact, share thoughts, construct collective identities, and coordinate actions towards libraries. Methodologically, the pilot study explores user comments on online news websites (Landert 2014), applying a data-driven approach informed by sentiment analysis and topic modelling (TM) testing both conventional lexicon-based sentiment scoring and LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation) topic modelling, and more recent BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) modelling. For purposes of transparency and easy replicability, we carry out the analyses in the open-source environment KNIME (Konstanz Information Miner; see Ihrmark & Tyrkkö 2023). The dataset of the pilot study contains 561 comments taken from 138 different articles published between 2019 and 2023 on the SamNytt website, the main media outlet for the Swedish radical right. The articles were selected by using the search term “bibliotek” in the site’s search function. The comments were made by 338 different user accounts, with a low number of individual accounts making more than 5 comments. The booktube community comprises individuals who share their literary experiences through videos posted on the YouTube platform. They are also book collectors who share their collections and their own subjective reasons for collecting books. Since their videos are published using tags, our focus was on the 'bookshelf tour' tag. This is a case study which utilized video analysis to investigate their classification criteria. We used the think-aloud protocols to collect the data. Content analysis was conducted, and the concept of classification was employed to understand the particular categories of private organization in their shelves and where these categories originated. Furthermore, we also considered studies related to book collections for interpreting the subjective connection between collecting and classification items in private collections. The results of the investigation highlighted three main aspects. Firstly, the desire to showcase their collection significantly influences their classification categories. Secondly, classification stands out as one of the primary activities of book collectors. Thirdly, the categories are influenced by their backgrounds and life stories, although many of them have been changing their classification considering their audience's opinion. When they make these classifications visible and explain their reasons for their choices, they also engage with their audience. In conclusion, we observed that when a classification scheme is based on the classifier's identity, it can lead to some instability in the categories. However, it also demonstrates how memory plays a crucial role in the retrieval process and how their worldview is reflected in these categories. PurposeThis exploratory study aims to help contribute to the understanding of online information search behaviour of PhD students from different humanities fields, with a focus on subject searching.Design/methodology/approachThe methodology is based on a semi-structured interview within which the participants are asked to conduct both a controlled search task and a free search task. The sample comprises eight PhD students in several humanities disciplines at Linnaeus University, a medium-sized Swedish university from 2020.FindingsMost humanities PhD students in the study have received training in information searching, but it has been too basic. Most rely on web search engines like Google and Google Scholar for publications' search, and university's discovery system for known-item searching. As these systems do not rely on controlled vocabularies, the participants often struggle with too many retrieved documents that are not relevant. Most only rarely or never use disciplinary bibliographic databases. The controlled search task has shown some benefits of using controlled vocabularies in the disciplinary databases, but incomplete synonym or concept coverage as well as user unfriendly search interface present hindrances.Originality/valueThe paper illuminates an often-forgotten but pervasive challenge of subject searching, especially for humanities researchers. It demonstrates difficulties and shows how most PhD students have missed finding an important resource in their research. It calls for the need to reconsider training in information searching and the need to make use of controlled vocabularies implemented in various search systems with usable search and browse user interfaces.

Purpose: This article aims to help ensure high-quality subject access to Swedish lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersexual (LGBTQI) fiction, and aims to identify challenges that librarians consider important to address, on behalf of themselves and end users. Design/methodology/approach: A web-based questionnaire comprising 35 closed and open questions, 22 of which were required, was sent via online channels in January 2022. By the survey closing date, 20 March 2022, 82 responses had been received. The study was intended to complement an earlier study targeting end users. Findings: Both this study of librarians and the previous study of end users have painted a dismal image of online search services when it comes to searching for LGBTQI fiction. The need to consult different channels (e.g. social media, library catalogues and friends), the inability to search more specifically than for the broad LGBTQI category and suboptimal search interfaces were among the commonly reported issues. The results of these studies are used to inform the development of a dedicated Swedish LGBTQI fiction database with an online search interface. Originality/value: The subject searching of fiction via online services is usually limited to genre with facets for time and place, while users are often seeking characteristics such as pacing, characterization, storyline, frame/setting, tone and language/style. LGBTQI fiction is even more challenging to search because indexing practices are not really being standardized or disseminated worldwide. This study helps address this important gap, in both research and practical applications.

Netnography is an adaptation of ethnography to the study of digital interactions. In this course, the ethnographic perspective underpinning Netnography is introduced together with the netnographic approach and different types of netnographic material. Ethnographic procedures adapted to digital settings, such as participant observations, interviews and taking field notes, are described together with Social Network Analysis. Employing both qualitative elements (such as participant observations) and quantitative (Social Network Analysis), learners will work hands-on with pre-selected datasets to do a small-scale netnographic study. This study will depart from questions connected to equality, cultural diversity and public health. The course includes four units that are designed to gradually introduce the learner to Netnography as a research field and a methodology, but the units can also be studied separately. Since its first appearance as the infrastructure supporting Bitcoin, blockchain has received different waves of attention from practitioners and academics. Besides the degree of interest, the attention to blockchain has often focused not merely on its own potential and characteristics but on its applications field. However, looking at its application and deployment in domains other than cryptocurrency or the nascent non-fungible tokens (NFTs), blockchain technology does not seem to be widely adopted or is still in its early stages. Given this, we are interested in how managers and the general public are informed about new technology other than through academic papers or the specialized press. In this paper, we analyze how blockchain has been presented by speakers invited to give TED and TEDx Talks to identify the most common terms used to present blockchain in these talks using a multi-methods approach (qualitative analysis and big data analysis) and see if the discourse surrounding blockchain has shifted over time. The results of this study show how the different perspectives brought by broadcasters like TED often overshadow a technological innovation like the blockchain in its evolution and application by the fact that the focus is instead shifted to products and services built on it. Also, this study shows how different degrees of attention and expertise are associated with each fashion wave of new or emergent technology innovations.
