Abstract

This article presents the results of the numerical simulations of a dynamic experimental campaign on the shaking table. The specimen is a full-scale masonry cross vault without and with the textile-reinforced mortar used as a strengthening solution. The specimen was tested in the scope of the European project SERA.ta 07 "Seismic Response of Masonry Cross Vaults: Shaking table tests and numerical validations". The specimen replicates a generic cross-section of a central bay located in the lateral nave of a three-nave church, where the recurrent in-plane shear mechanism is induced. Finite element model (FEM) and discrete element model (DEM) were built and calibrated based on the experimental frequencies and mode shapes. Then, a unidirectional seismic action was applied to the numerical model in order to develop shear damage in the shell of the vault. A detailed description of the two simulations and their main outcomes are presented. The response was evaluated based on the displacements, damage, collapse mechanisms and hysteretic behaviour. Abstract

This article presents the results of the LNEC-3D shaking table tests on a full-scale masonry cross vault without and with the textile reinforced mortar used as strengthening solution. The specimen has been tested in the scope of the European project SERA. TA 07 "Seismic Response of Masonry Cross Vaults: Shaking table tests and numerical validations". The specimen replicates a generic cross-section of a central bay located in a lateral nave of a three-nave church, derived from the intersection of two semi-circular barrel vaults with low rise. It is representative of a generic monumental church in Central Italy, generated by a squared base groin vault with a net span of 3.13 m and 1.13 m rise at full scale. A unidirectional seismic action is applied to develop shear damage in the shell of the vault. A detailed description of the two tests and the conclusions are presented. The response is evaluated based on the displacements, damage, and collapse mechanisms developed as a function of an increasing intensity earthquake testing protocol, in which a pre-processed strong ground motion component of the L'Aquila (Italy) earthquake (April 6, 2009) was used. Abstract

Preservation of cultural heritage sites is of paramount importance. The ruins of Carmo Convent in Lisbon stand as a poignant reminder of the city's rich history, but challenges regarding structural integrity and safety are present in a highly populated and touristic area. In this paper, a comprehensive study of the Carmo Convent is presented, focused on non-destructive testing (NDT), structural health monitoring (SHM) and numerical modelling. Given its state of ruin and historical relevance, the study relied heavily on NDT. Additionally, a metro line passing underneath the convent raised concerns regarding potential hazards from induced vibrations. Thus, metro vibration monitoring (MVM) was implemented to assess the impact of induced vibrations on the structure. One of the challenges was the scarcity of standards specific to historic structures. However, through a combination of finite element method (FEM) and discrete element method (DEM) numerical modelling, valuable insights into the current condition of the structure were obtained. MVM revealed that the maximum velocity induced by metro activities remained within safe limits, indicating minimal impact. These results not only provide crucial information on structural preservation but also empower stakeholders to make informed decisions regarding the implementation of protective measures. Abstract

City centres of Europe are often composed of unreinforced masonry structural aggregates, whose seismic response is challenging to predict. To advance the state of the art on the seismic response of these aggregates, the Adjacent Interacting Masonry Structures (AIMS) subproject from Horizon 2020 project Seismology and Earthquake Engineering Research Infrastructure Alliance for Europe (SERA) provides shake-table test data of a two-unit, double-leaf stone masonry aggregate subjected to two horizontal components of dynamic excitation. A blind prediction was organized with participants from academia and industry to test modelling approaches and assumptions and to learn about the extent of uncertainty in modelling for such masonry aggregates. The participants were provided with the full set of material and geometrical data, construction details and original seismic input and asked to predict prior to the test the expected seismic response in terms of damage mechanisms, base-shear forces, and roof displacements. The modelling approaches used differ significantly in the level of detail and the modelling assumptions. This paper provides an overview of the adopted modelling approaches and their subsequent predictions. It further discusses the range of assumptions made when modelling masonry walls, floors and connections, and aims at discovering how the common solutions regarding modelling masonry in general, and masonry aggregates in particular, affect the results. The results are evaluated both in terms of damage mechanisms, base shear forces, displacements and interface openings in both directions, and then compared with the experimental results. The modelling approaches featuring Discrete Element Method (DEM) led to the best predictions in terms of displacements, while a submission using rigid block limit analysis led to the best prediction in terms of damage mechanisms. Abstract

The article discusses a Blind Test Competition focused on predicting the behavior of historical groin vaults under seismic conditions. Thirteen groups from around the world participated, showcasing a mix of theoretical knowledge and practical expertise. The competition revealed that simple models based on fundamental principles can provide accurate predictions, highlighting the importance of understanding material mechanics in seismic simulation for historical structures. Additionally, while predicting damage mechanisms and accelerations was relatively straightforward, accurately predicting displacements proved to be more challenging, emphasizing the need for further refinement in displacement-based verification methods in structural engineering. Abstract

Across historical centres in Europe, stone masonry buildings form building aggregates that developed as the layout of the city or village was densified. In these aggregates, adjacent buildings can share structural walls with an older and a newer unit connected either by interlocking stones or by a layer of mortar. Observations after for example the recent Central Italy earthquakes showed that joints between the buildings were often the first elements to be damaged, leading to a complex interaction between the units. The analysis of such building aggregates is difficult due to the lack of guidelines, as the advances were impeded by the scarce experimental data. Therefore, the objective of the project AIMS (Seismic Testing of Adjacent Interacting Masonry Structures), included in the H2020 project SERA, was to provide such data by testing an aggregate of two double-leaf stone masonry buildings under two horizontal components of dynamic excitation. The test units were constructed at half-scale, with a two-storey building and a one-storey building. The buildings shared one common wall, while only a layer of mortar connected the façade walls. The floors were at different heights and had different beam orientations. Prior to the test, a blind prediction competition was organized with twelve participants from academia and industry that were provided with all the geometrical and material data, construction details, and the seismic input. The participants were asked to report results in terms of damage mechanisms, recorded displacements and base shear values. Results of the shake-table campaign are reported, together with a comparison with the blind predictions. Large scatter in terms of reported predictions highlights the impact of modelling uncertainties and the need for further tests.

Abstract

The seismic safety assessment of 3D complex structural elements of historic buildings, such as groin and rib vaults, is a challenge and experimental tests can provide relevant data for this purpose. This paper presents the results of two experimental campaigns about a reduced scale 3D printed vault characterized by asymmetric boundary conditions. The specimen adopted the square plan geometry of groin vault and was made of polymeric bricks with radial joints, orthogonally woven at the barrel intersection. The seismic behaviour of the vault was studied through physical modelling: quasi-static using actuators and dynamic using a shake-table. In particular, an incremental dynamic analysis up to the collapse of the vault was carried out. Abstract

A vulnerabilidade sísmica das abóbadas de aresta tem sido demonstrada através dos danos e colapsos observados ao longo dos séculos. A avaliação do seu comportamento sísmico é fundamental para a preservação dos edifícios históricos. Apesar de existirem vários métodos e tipos de análise para a avaliação estrutural de abóbadas (análise limite com macroblocos, métodos dos elementos finitos, método dos elementos discretos), os ensaios experimentais são cruciais quer para avaliar a sua resposta quer para calibrar modelos numéricos. O presente artigo apresenta os resultados dos ensaios, efetuados na plataforma sísmica do Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (LNEC), de um modelo experimental de uma abóbada de aresta. O modelo experimental foi construído à escala reduzida 1:5 e é constituído por blocos impressos em impressora 3D e por junta seca. Os ensaios têm como principal objetivo avaliar o comportamento do modelo para o mecanismo de dano associado ao corte no plano, que frequentemente afeta as abóbadas de aresta das naves laterais. Este mecanismo é causado sobretudo devido a uma diferença significativa de rigidez dos apoios/condições de fronteira. Nos ensaios em plataforma sísmica, avaliou-se o desempenho sísmico do modelo experimental para diferentes amplitudes do sismo de Emilia Romagna (2012).
