Factors affecting the trophic transfer of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems remain to be clarified. Here, we determined the abundances of MPs in multiple terrestrial and aquatic species, including insects, snails, crustaceans, fishes, snakes, birds, and voles, from an abandoned e-waste recycling site. Approximately 80% of MPs were within the size range 20-50 μm. In wildlife, the MP abundances per individual and per body weight were found to be positively and negatively correlated with body weight, respectively. Herein, terrestrial vertebrates, primarily birds, exhibited more complex compositions of polymer types than other organisms owing to the wide foraging areas and diverse food sources. However, according to the MPs modeled and the observed results in bird food chains, MPs do not appear to be preferentially retained in the bird gastrointestinal tract. Biomagnification of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is affected by physiochemical properties of POPs and ecological factors of wildlife. In this study, influences on species-specific biomagnification of POPs from aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates to eight songbird species were investigated. The median concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in birds were 175 to 13 200 ng/g lipid weight (lw) and 62.7 to 3710 ng/g lw, respectively. Diet compositions of different invertebrate taxa for songbird species were quantified by quantitative fatty acid signature analysis. In this study, the carbon and chlorine isotope fractionation during ultraviolet-photolysis of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs, including PCB18, PCB77, PCB110, and PCB138) in n-hexane (Hex), methanol/water (MeOH/H2O), and silica gel was first investigated to explore their mechanistic processes. We observed a significant variation in ΛCl-C (eCl/eC) for the same PCBs in different photochemical systems, implying that PCB degradation processes in various photoreaction systems could differ. Although all substrates showed normal apparent carbon/chlorine kinetic isotope effects (C-/Cl-AKIE >1), the putative inverse C-AKIE of nondechlorinated pathways was suggested by 13C depletion of the average carbon isotope composition of PCB138 and corresponding dechlorinated products in MeOH/H2O, which might originate from the magnetic isotope effect. Significant negative correlations were found between C-AKIE and relative disappearance quantum yields ("Φ") of ortho-dechlorinated substrates (PCB18, PCB110, and PCB138) in Hex and MeOH/H2O. However, the C-AKIE and "Φ" of PCB77 (meta/para-dechlorinated congener) obviously deviated from the above correlations. Furthermore, significantly different product-related carbon isotope enrichment factors of PCB77 in Hex were found. These results demonstrated the existence of dechlorination position-specific and masking effects in carbon isotope fractionations.

Samples of Asota caricae (larvae, pupae, and adults) and its host plant leaf (Ficus hispida), larvae of Aloa lactinea, and mixed adult moths were collected from an electronic waste (e-waste) recycling site in south China. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers were found to exhibit concentrations of 420-1300, 100-860, and 7.6-49 ng/g dry weight, respectively. Organophosphate esters (OPEs) and phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are widespread contaminants in the environment. The variations of these chemicals in plants throughout their life cycle is little known. In this study, OPEs, OPE metabolites, and PAEs in peanut and corn grown under field conditions, soil, and air were measured to understand the uptake and translocation, distributions in the plant compartments, and metabolism in the plants. The soil concentrations showed an enrichment effect of OPEs onto the rhizosphere soil but a depletion effect of PAEs on rhizosphere soils. The PAE concentrations between peanut (with a mean of 1295 ng/g dw) and corn (3339 ng/g dw) were significantly different, but the OPE concentrations were not significantly different (with means of 15.6 and 19.2 ng/g dw, respectively). OPE metabolites were also detected in the plants, with lower concentrations and detection rates. Similarities and differences in the temporal variations of the concentrations of traditional OPEs, novel OPEs, and PAEs in plants during their growth were observed. The variations were dependent on both plant species and particular tissues. The leaf compartment is the most important reservoir of OPEs and PAEs (but not OPE metabolites) for both species, highlighting the importance of an aerial uptake pathway. The chemicals have a low potential to be translocated into peanut and corn kernels, reducing their risks via food consumption. Less hydrophobic compounds have higher root concentration factors in this study. These observations differ from those of previous hydroponic experiments.

The present study investigates legacy and novel brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in atmospheric PM2.5 associated with various urban source sectors in a city and electronic waste (e-waste) recycling facilities in southern China. The concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and novel BFRs (∑2NBFRs) at the urban industrial park (UIP) sites varied greatly from 22.0 to 105 pg m-3 and from to 29.7 to 459 pg m-3, respectively, and higher concentrations were generally found at sites involving industrial sectors of electronics, plastics, and machinery. Their spatial variations at other urban potential source sites were small suggesting a lack of strong point emissions. The levels of PBDEs and ∑2NBFRs at the e-waste facilities (220-2356 pg m-3 and 83.6-569 pg m-3) were significantly higher and did not temporally decline, indicating that improvement in e-waste recycling techniques does not significantly reduce emissions of PBDEs. NBFRs dominated the BFRs at the urban sites (55% on average), while PBDEs were still dominant (78%) at the e-waste sites. PBDE congener profiles in PM2.5 were substantially different from those in commercial mixtures. The congener profiles as well as their correlations suggested frequent formation of lower brominated PBDEs from degradation of highly brominated congeners in this region, which became appreciable due to the reduced emissions. The significant correlations among the lower brominated congeners also reflected similar environmental behaviors due to similar physicochemical properties.

This study evaluated the removal of multiple pollutants, i.e., polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), novel halogenated flame retardants (HFRs), sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs), and heavy metals (HMs), by a full-scale reversed A2/O process in a sewage treatment plant (STP) in Guangzhou, China. The reversed A2/O process demonstrated high removal efficiencies (REs) for total PBDEs (60.5% ± 4.3%), novel HFRs (98.4% ± 2.8%) and HMs (70.1% ± 1.2%), and a relatively low RE for SAs (25.0% ± 2.3%). BDE 209, the dominant PBDE congener, showed a high residual concentration (13.41 ± 5.18 ng/L) in the suspended particulate matter (SPM) of treated effluents. Some novel HFRs, dechlorane plus (DP) and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), were detected in the SPM of the raw sewage (7.50 ± 4.14 ng/L and 11.52 ± 11.65 ng/L, respectively). The removal of SAs was mainly through biodegradation in the activated sludge bioreactors (ASBs). Of the HMs, Mn and Ni exhibited the lowest REs (47.5% ± 2.2% and 35.0% ± 2.6%, respectively), while Cr and Cu showed the highest removal (REs > 80%). In terms of treatment units in the reversed A2/O process, ASBs showed the highest RE (27.8%) for the multiple pollutants. The information can aid in our understanding of removal properties of STPs on various pollutants and evaluating the ecological/health risks of STPs as point pollutant sources

Therefore, this study sought to characterize the occurrence and trophic dynamics of SCCPs and MCCPs in an insect-dominated terrestrial food web in an e-waste recycling site in South China. A partial life cycle test was performed with silkworms (Bombyx mori) exposed to different levels of halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs). The aims were to investigate the fate of HOPs during metamorphosis and the adverse effects of HOP exposures on silkworm development. Contaminant exposures resulted in decreased body weights, increased development times, and reductions of fecundity in silkworms. Assimilation efficiencies of HOPs decreased with an increasing octanol-water partition coefficient (log KOW). From the larvae to the pupae stage, bioamplification factors (BAmFs) exhibited concentration-dependent results, in which there was a positive correlation with the log KOW at the high concentrations but no correlation at the low concentrations. From the pupae to the moth stage, BAmFs were linearly negatively correlated with the log KOW for males, but a parabolic correlation with the log KOW was more suitable for females. Regarding reproductive activities, female moths selectively transferred low log KOW HOPs to eggs by the oviposition except for highly halogenated lipophilic pollutants. However, BAmFs of male moths during mating showed no correlation with the log KOW, although highly halogenated lipophilic pollutants had the highest BAmF values. The sex-specific bioamplification processes and special behaviors of highly halogenated lipophilic pollutants deserve further research.

Fetal exposure to multiple organic contaminants (OCs) is a public concern because of the adverse effects of OCs on early life development. Infant hair has the potential to be used as an alternative matrix to identify susceptible fetuses, owing to its reliability, sensitivity, and advantages associated with sampling, handling, and ethics. However, the applicability of infant hair for assessing in utero exposure to OCs is still limited. In this study, 57 infant hair samples were collected in Guangzhou, South China, to evaluate the levels and compositions of typical OCs in the fetus. Most of the target OCs were detected in infant hair, with medians of 144 μg/g, 17.7 μg/g, 192 ng/g, 46.9 ng/g, and 1.36 ng/g for phthalate esters (PAEs), alternative plasticizers (APs), organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), respectively. Meanwhile, paired maternal hair (0-9 cm from the scalp) was collected to examine the associations between maternal and infant hair for individual compounds. Low-brominated PBDEs tended to deposit in infant hair, with median concentrations approximately two times higher than those in maternal samples. Levels of PBDEs and 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) in paired maternal and infant hair showed strong positive correlations (p 0.05), while most plasticizers (PAEs and APs) were poorly correlated between paired hair samples. Exposure sources were responsible for the variation in correlation between OC levels in the paired infant and maternal samples. Crude relationships between fetal exposure to OCs and birth size were examined using the Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) model. BDE-28 was found to be adversely associated with the birth size. This study provides referential information for evaluating in utero exposure to OCs and their health risks based on infant hair.

Human hair has increasingly been used as a noninvasive biomonitoring matrix for assessment of human exposure to various organic contaminants (OCs). However, the accumulation processes of OCs in hair remains unclear thus far, which raised concerns on the reliability of hair analysis results for OCs. While the secondary metabolites of DDT such as 2,2-bis(chlorophenyl)-1-chloroethylene (DDMU) and 2,2-bis(chlorophenyl)methane (DDM) have been detected in the environment for several decades, knowledge is extremely limited on their bioaccumulation characteristics. Here, we reported the bioaccumulation and maternal transfer of p,p'-DDMU and p,p'-DDM in two wild fishes, i.e., the northern snakehead (Channa argus) and crucian carp (Carassius auratus), from a DDT contaminated site in South China. The hepatic concentrations of p,p'-DDMU and p,p'-DDM in the fish were up to 549 and 893 ng/g lipid weight, contributing 5.3% and 3.2% in average to ΣDDXs (the sum concentrations of DDT and its 6 metabolites), respectively. The residues of p,p'-DDMU and p,p'-DDM in the fish exhibited interspecific and intraspecific variations, resulting from the differences in lipid content, sex, and body sizes (length and mass) between or within species. Both p,p'-DDMU and p,p'-DDM were consistently detected in the fish eggs, demonstrating their maternal transfer in female fish. The mean eggs to liver lipid-normalized concentration (E/L) ratios of p,p'-DDMU and p,p'-DDM were 0.98 and 1.77 in the northern snakehead, 0.35 and 0.01 in crucian carp, respectively; which were comparable to or even exceeded those of DDT and its major metabolites calculated in the same individual. Statistical analyses of the data showed that the E/L ratios were positively correlated with body sizes of the fish, but negatively correlated with the hepatic concentrations of p,p'-DDMU and p,p'-DDM in females; suggesting the influences of fish sizes and the mother body residues on their maternal transfer efficiencies.

In 2016, total suspended particles (TSP) and fine particles (PM2.5) were collected near four e-waste recycling parks in a region of Southern China. TSP and PM2.5 levels and composition around these industrial activities were determined and the potential risks for human health due to the exposure to toxic elements contained on fine particles (PM2.5) were evaluated. Levels of TSP and PM2.5 were lower with advanced recycling methods than with small recycling e-waste workshops operating in the sampling region. The main trace elements in particles were Cu, Pb, and Ti, the same as those detected before the transition to advanced dismantling methods in e-waste recycling. Significantly higher levels of Cu, Pb, Sn, Te, Tl and NH4+ in TSP and Cu and Te in PM2.5 were found in e-waste recycling areas than in BG site. Taking Cu as the indicative element emitted from e-waste recycling activities, significant high positive correlations between Cu and W, and Cu and Te were found. These elements are present and can be released from electrical and electronical components during e-waste recycling processes. Exposure to elements for the population living near these e-waste recycling parks means carcinogenic risks above the acceptable threshold (>10-5).

The exposure to plastic debris and associated pollutants for wildlife is of urgent concern, but little attention has been paid on the transfer of plastic additives from plastic debris to organisms. In the present study, the leaching of incorporated flame retardants (FRs), including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), alternative brominated FRs (AFRs), and phosphate flame retardants (PFRs), from different sizes of recycled acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) polymer were investigated in avian digestive fluids. The impact of co-ingested sediment on the leaching of additive-derived FRs in digestive fluids was also explored. In the recycled ABS, BDE 209 (715 μg/g) and 1, 2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE, 1766 μg/g) had the highest concentrations among all target FRs. The leaching proportions of FRs were higher in finer sizes of ABS. The leaching proportions of FRs from recycled ABS increased with elevated logKOW of FRs. In the tests with coexisted ABS and sediment, hexa- to deca-BDEs, BTBPE, and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) migrated from ABS to sediment, which resulted in the less bioaccessible fractions of these FRs in gut fluids. More lipophilic chemicals tended to be adsorbed by sediment from ABS. The results suggest the migration of additive-derived FRs from plastics to other indigestible materials in digestive fluids. The findings in this study provide insights into the transfer of additive-derived FRs from plastics to birds, and indicate the significant contribution of FR-incorporated plastics to bioaccumulation of highly lipophilic FRs.

To comprehensively clarify human exposure to halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) through dermal uptake and hand-to-mouth intake, skin wipe samples from four typical skin locations from 30 volunteers were collected. The total concentration of the target chemicals (24 HFRs and 16 PCBs) ranged from 203 to 4470 ng/m2. BDE-209 and DBDPE accounted for about 37 and 40% of ∑24HFRs, respectively, and PCB-41 and PCB-110 were the dominant PCB congeners, with proportion of 24 and 10%, respectively. Although exhibiting relatively lower concentrations of contaminants than bared skin locations, clothing-covered skin areas were also detected with considerable levels of HFRs and PCBs, indicating clothing to be a potentially significant exposure source. Significant differences in HFR and PCB levels and profiles were also observed between males and females, with more lower-volatility chemicals in male-bared skin locations and more higher-volatility compounds in clothing-covered skin locations of female participants. The mean estimated whole-body dermal absorption doses of ∑8HFRs and ∑16PCBs (2.9 × 10-4 and 6.7 × 10-6 mg/kg·d) were 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than ingestion doses via hand-to-mouth contact (6.6 × 10-7 and 3.1 × 10-7 mg/kg·d). The total noncarcinogenic health risk resulted from whole-body dermal absorption and oral ingestion to ∑7HFRs and ∑16PCBs were 5.2 and 0.35, respectively.

Information on biomagnification of alternative brominated flame retardants (ABFRs) is limited and results are inconclusive, due in part to uncertainty in the understanding of predator/prey relationships. In the present study, a predatory fish, Channa argus, and several forage fish species were obtained from an ABFR contaminated site. The predator/prey relationships were identified based on fatty acid (FA) signatures in the predator and prey. Biomagnification factors (BMFs) for several ABFRs including decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), 1,2‑bis(2,4,6‑tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE), hexabromobenzene (HBB), pentabromotoluene (PBT), and pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB) were estimated based on the identified predator/prey relationships. The results showed that crucian carp was the main prey of C. argus, contributing to 71%–100% to its total diet. The mean BMFs for DBDPE, BTBPE, and HBB were 0.06, 0.40, and 0.91, respectively, indicating trophic dilution of these ABFRs. However, biomagnification of PBT and PBEB, with BMFs of 2.09 and 2.13, respectively, was observed. The BMFs for PBT, PBEB and HBB were comparable to or even higher than those for some polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners estimated in the same individual predator, indicating that these emerging pollutants may pose significant environmental risks. The BMFs for ABFRs and PBDEs were significantly and negatively correlated to the log KOWs of these chemicals, suggesting that the biomagnification of these chemicals was depressed due to their superhydrophobic nature. The development of a rodent ambient particulate matter (PM) inhalation system is critical for drawing causal inferences between PM exposure and the onset of human diseases. In this study, we constructed a real-ambient PM exposure system to investigate multi-organ injury and the reversibility of the impairments in C57BL/6 J male mice exposed to PM with a duration of up to three months in Shijiazhuang, a city with the highest PM2.5 concentration in China. This unique exposure system provided an optimal scenario for round-the-clock PM exposure absent a change in the physiochemical properties of PM and minimized the disturbance to the mice habitat. The mean concentration of PM2.5 in the exposure chambers was 89.95, 79.98, and 87.87 μg/m3 at three different time points, respectively: weeks 1–3, week 1–6, and week 1–12. The injury in multiple organs, including lung, brain, heart, testis, and intestine, was profound and was evident by the significant pathological and functional alterations. Pulmonary pathological examination revealed severe interstitial inflammatory and alveolar hemorrhage throughout the exposure, which was in line with the reduced lung function and the increased cytokine excretion in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and blood plasma. Notably, the PM-mediated inflammatory response in different systems was correlated with the severity of the injury and the attenuation of pulmonary lesions in the recovery group. Thus, the PM2.5-induced inflammatory response, the chemical components-induced cytotoxicity, genetic damage, and oxidative stress might be implicated in the impairment of multiple murine organs. These findings revealed the severity, sensitivity, and reversibility of multi-organ injury in response to a real-ambient PM exposure.

Severe pollution of organohalogen compounds (OHCs) including PBDEs, PCBs and DDTs is demonstrated in e-waste recycling sites and metropolis in South China, but relatively little is known of their impacts on wildlife that inhabits nature reserves in this region, especially those located at the neighborhood areas of e-waste recycling sites. Mean ∑PBDEs (84.9 ng/g lipid weight), ∑PCBs (397 ng/g) and ∑TEQs (total toxic equivalent of coplanar PCBs, 2.68 ng/g) concentrations in kingfishers from SNNR were approximately 2-, 5-, and 4-fold higher than those detected in a reference population, respectively; suggesting contamination of the e-waste-derived OHCs in SNNR. Mean ∑DDTs concentration (2150 ng/g) in kingfishers from SNNR was also higher (~2-fold) than that from the reference samples. While ∑DDTs dominated the composition of the OHCs at both sampling sites, ∑PCBs was also important in kingfishers from SNNR, averaging 15% of ∑OHCs. Histological examination of the liver showed steatosis occurred in 60% of the kingfishers from SNNR. Birds with hepatic steatosis had significantly (p = 0.03) higher ∑TEQs than those without steatosis. Similar trends were also found for ∑PCBs and ∑DDTs, although it is not statistically significant. It therefore seems likely that the hepatic steatosis were associated with the relatively high body-burden of OHCs, although the possibility of other factors resulting in hepatic steatosis cannot be ruled out.

Although isomer-specific bioaccumulation of dechlorane plus (DP) has been addressed in many studies, it remains unclear which factors determine this process and whether biotransformation of DP occurs in organisms. Comparative experiments were conducted in both in vivo and in ovo incubation using hens and eggs to identify the dominant factors determining the bioaccumulation of DP. Hens and fertilized eggs were exposed to DP isomers (syn- and anti-DP) by feeding and spiking, respectively, to investigate absorption, elimination, and metabolism. No significant differences were found between absorption efficiencies of DP isomers in the adult hens. Following first-order kinetics, anti-DP exhibited a slightly longer half-life than syn-DP as well as an elevated anti-DP fraction in laid eggs, thereby suggesting selective enrichment of anti-DP in adult hens. However, chicken embryos metabolized approximately 12% and 28% of the absorbed syn- and anti-DP, respectively, thereby verifying that anti-DP was preferably metabolized. This result indicated that stereo-selective excretion of syn-DP, rather than preferred metabolism of anti-DP, played a more prominent role in isomer-specific bioaccumulation of DP in chickens. Further studies on metabolites of DP are crucial to understanding the fate of DP in organisms.

The bioaccessibility of environmental contaminants has been assessed widely using in vitro simulation; however, the physiological parameters used vary greatly. In this study, we assessed the influence of various physiological parameters and food material on the oral or inhalation bioaccessibility of PM2.5-bound hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), including halogenated flame retardants (HFRs), organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results showed that physiologically based pepsin and pancreatin have a small influence on the HOC liberation from particles. The bioaccessibility increased dramatically when the bile salt concentrations exceeding the critical micelle concentration, and application of porcine bile salts probably lead to underestimated bioaccessibility. Protein and carbohydrates significantly increased the bioaccessibility of most HOCs, while a significant bioaccessibility reduction was caused by green tea. The bioaccessibility of most HOCs was not promoted by liquor under normal physiological condition, but was significantly promoted under fast condition. Long residence time of PM2.5 in the lung (15 days) would result in higher mobilization of PAHs into the lung fluid than short time (one day). However, the inverse time-dependence for OPFRs suggests degradation in the lung fluid. A mechanism of hydrolysis of organophosphorus ester is hypothesized, and the half lives ranged from 17 to 90 days.

A combination of previous studies and the present study indicated species-specific debromination of polybromodiphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in teleost fish. Three situations of debromination were found, namely rapid debromination represented by debromination of BDE 99 to BDE 47 observed in common carp, tilapia, crucian carp, and oscar fish; slow debromination represented by debromination of BDE 99 to BDE 49 observed in the abovementioned fish and rainbow trout, salmon, and snakehead; and no or minor debromination observed in catfish. The results of experiments on cofactors, inhibitors, and substrate competitors indicated that activities of outer ring deiodinase of 3, 3', 5'-triiodothyronine (type I deiodinase), which cannot be inhibited by 6-propyl-2-thiouracil, were responsible for the rapid debromination, and the outer ring deiodinase of thyroxine (type II deiodinase) regulated the slow debromination. The debromination of BDE 99 to BDE 49 was more common, but occurred at a much lower rate (approximately 100 times lower) than the debromination of BDE 99 to BDE 47. This was because the activity of type II deiodinase was nearly two orders of magnitude lower than that of type I deiodinase in the fish species studied. Further studies on debromination of PBDEs and properties of deiodinase in more species are needed to confirm the hypothesis.

Legacy organic contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and several currently used organic contaminants, such as novel brominated retardants (NBFRs), organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), and Dechlorane Plus (DPs), were measured in the segmented hair and hand wipes of e-waste dismantling workers and in the dust from their workplace in an e-waste recycling site in South China to assess the accumulation and sources of organic contaminants in the hair shaft. The median concentrations of DPs, PBDEs, NBFRs, PCBs and OPFRs in hair samples were 23.5, 154, 156, 349, and 371 ng/g, respectively. A linear increase in organic contaminant concentrations was found along the hair shaft, with significant differences among each segment, while the age-related patterns were similar among the 7 hair segments. A linear relationship was found between the accumulation rates and the log KOW, indicating that the accumulation rates of organic contaminants along the hair shaft decreased with increasing log KOW values. Enantiomer fraction (EF) values of PCB-132 in distal segments were close to those in dust and air, while EFs in proximal segments were close to those in serum. The contributions of PCBs from external sources to hair increased with the distance from the scalp of hair segments, from 67.8% in 0-3 cm segments to 95.9% in 18-21 cm segments.

Indoor dust ingestion is an important pathway in human exposure to environmental pollutants, and the bioaccessibility of pollutants can largely influence human exposure risk assessment. In the present study, the concentrations and compositions of organophosphate esters (OPEs) were investigated for different sizes (50 μm to 2 mm) of indoor dust collected from a megacity, Guangzhou, and an e-waste recycling site. The concentrations of total OPEs were 5360 to 6830 ng/g and 560 to 20,500 ng/g across all sizes of dust from Guangzhou and the e-waste site, respectively. The levels and compositions of OPEs were consistent in different fractions of dust from Guangzhou. The highest concentrations of OPEs were found in the finest fraction of dust from the e-waste site. OPEs in Guangzhou dust showed decreasing bioaccessibility when the log KOW of FRs increased from 4 to 11. The bioaccessibility of most OPEs in dust from the e-waste site was much lower than those in Guangzhou dust, indicating low bioaccessibility in the components of dust, such as e-waste debris, from the e-waste site. The human exposure risks of OPEs in dust from Guangzhou were generally higher than those in dust from the e-waste site. Tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA), a typical brominated flame retardant, leaked from commercial products into the environments has attracted people's attention around the world. Ochrobactrum sp. T capable of degradation and mineralization of TBBPA was isolated in our early work. In this study, the identification of TBBPA-degrading gene from the strain was further carried out by combining whole-genome sequencing with gene cloning and expression procedures. In total, 3877 open reading frames were found within 3.9 Mb genome and seven of them were identified as dehalogenating-relating genes. One gene with a significant ability to degrade TBBPA was designated as tbbpaA. Sequence alignments analysis showed that it shared 100% identity with haloacid dehalogenases. Furthermore, tbbpaA gene was cloned and expressed into E. coli to achieve a constructed strain. Like the original strain, the constructed strain could degrade TBBPA (6 mg L−1) with 78% of debromination efficiency and 37.8% mineralization efficiency within 96 h. Gene expression study revealed that tbbpaA was up-regulated in the presence of TBBPA. Overall, we report the identification of a functional TBBPA-degrading gene in an aerobe, which can deepen the knowledge of enhancing TBBPA removal by Strain T at the genetic level and facilitate in situ TBBPA bioremediation.

To assess the impacts of regulations and laws enhancing the management of e-waste in China, hair samples of local residents and dismantling workers in a former e-waste area in 2016 and 2019, five and eight years after the implementation of legislation and regulations in this area since 2011, respectively. The temporal changes in levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) in the hair samples were investigated. Besides, the levels of these organic contaminants in hair samples collected from the same area in 2009, 2011, and 2015 reported in previous studies were used as comparison. Chronic exposure to low levels of heavy metals threatens human health. However, few studies evaluated the health effects and spatial distributions of chronic exposure to heavy metals in metropolitan residents throughout mainland China using unified sampling methods and evaluation indicators at the national level. Here, the concentrations and spatial distributions of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Sb, Pb, and Hg) in the hair of 1202 metropolitan residents from mainland China were analyzed, and differences in age and sex were evaluated. Most target metals exhibited higher concentrations in the hair of residents from South Central China. Generally, male hair had higher As and Se concentrations, whereas female hair had higher Cd and Pb levels (p < 0.05). A significant pairwise correlation existed between most metals in hair, especially Cd-Pb (r = 0.638, p < 0.05). The Se/heavy metal molar ratio is used as an indicator to assess the detoxification ability. The results demonstrated that protecting metropolitan residents in South Central China from heavy metals in their daily life is crucial, particularly for Hg, Pb, and Cr with Se/(Hg, Pb, or Cr) molar ratios < 1. This is the first study to comprehensively consider the antagonistic effects of Se and heavy metals using the molar ratio of Se/heavy metals to evaluate health implications and propose health management policies for metropolitan residents in China.

Five types of tissues, including the liver, kidney, intestine, lung, and heart, were collected from black-spotted frogs and bullfrogs to study the tissue-specific accumulation of organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) and plasticizers. Thirteen PFRs and nine plasticizers were detected, with average total concentrations of 1.4–13 ng/g ww and 858–5503 ng/g ww in black-spotted frogs, 3.6–46 ng/g ww and 355–3504 ng/g ww in bullfrogs. Significant differences in pollutant concentrations among different tissues in the two frog species were found, indicating the specific selectivity distribution of PFRs and plasticizers. Overall, liver tissues exhibited significantly higher pollutant concentrations. The pollutant concentration ratios of other tissue to the sum of liver tissue and other tissues (OLR, Cother/(Cother + Cliver)) corresponding to male frogs were significantly greater than those of females, suggesting that male frogs could have higher metabolic potentials for PFRs and plasticizers. No obvious correlations between OLR and log KOW were found, indicating that the other factors (e.g., bioaccumulation pathway and metabolism) besides lipophicity could influence the deposition of PFRs and plasticizers in frog livers. Different parental transfer patterns for PFRs and plasticizers were observed in frogs when using different tissues as parental tissues. Moreover, the liver tissues had similar parental transfer mechanism with muscle tissues.

Bioavailability of environmental contaminants is attracting considerable scientific attention due to growing awareness of its importance for risk assessment. In this study, size-segregated airborne particles were collected from six point-source sites, an urban residential site, and a sub-urban site. Potential factors governing bioaccessibility of the particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organophosphorus esters (OPEs) in stimulated gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts were elucidated. Particle concentrations of PAHs and OPEs at the eight sites were 2.4-32.3 ng/m3 and 1.6-19.9 ng/m3, respectively. In fine particles (with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm), 4- to 6-ring PAHs were more strongly correlated with organic carbon (OC) than elemental carbon (EC); while 3- and 4-ring PAHs in coarse particles (2.5-10 μm) tended to associate with EC. OPEs mostly showed significant correlations with EC in both fine and coarse particles. OC and EC exerted a significantly restraining effect on the oral and inhalation bioaccessibility of most hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in fine particles due to sorption of HOC molecules to these components. Furthermore, the effects varied, which could depend either on the emission sources (for oral bioaccessibility of PAHs) or the physicochemical properties of HOCs (for bioaccessibility of OPEs and inhalation bioaccessibility of PAHs). Linear regression between OC/EC contents and HOC bioaccessibility indicated that EC should play a more important role in the inhalation bioaccessibility than the oral bioaccessibility. Particle size of airborne particles is a relatively less significant factor determining the bioaccessibility.

Air pollution by airborne particles is a serious health problem worldwide. The present study was aimed at investigating the concentrations and composition of total suspended particles (TSPs) and PM2.5 at various industrial/commercial sites of Guangzhou, a megacity of Southern China. Major and trace elements, ions and carbonaceous fraction were determined and main components were calculated. In addition, in order to assess the potential toxic on the respiratory system of these PM, cytotoxicity of size-fractionated particles (PM10-5.6, PM5.6-3.3, PM3.3-1.1, PM1.1-0.43) for a human lung cancer cell line (A549) was also investigated. Correlations between PM constituents and toxicity were assessed. Median levels of TSPs and PM2.5 in industrial/commercial sites were 206 and 57.7 μg/m3, respectively. Nickel, Cu, Mo, Mn, Pb, and Ti were the most abundant metals in TSPs and PM2.5. Industrial activities and coal combustion were the most important sources of carbonaceous particles in the zone. MTT assays showed that PM10-5.6 and PM1.1-0.43 had the highest and the lowest cytotoxicity to A549 cell lines, respectively. Inhalable particles around the manufacturing of metal facilities and formal waste treatment plants showed a high cytotoxicity to A549 cell lines. In general terms, no significant correlations were found between main components of PM and toxicity. However, W showed a significant correlation with cell viability.

The present study investigates legacy and novel brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in atmospheric PM2.5 associated with various urban source sectors in a city and electronic waste (e-waste) recycling facilities in southern China. The concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and novel BFRs (∑2NBFRs) at the urban industrial park (UIP) sites varied greatly from 22.0 to 105 pg m-3 and from to 29.7 to 459 pg m-3, respectively, and higher concentrations were generally found at sites involving industrial sectors of electronics, plastics, and machinery. Their spatial variations at other urban potential source sites were small suggesting a lack of strong point emissions. The levels of PBDEs and ∑2NBFRs at the e-waste facilities (220-2356 pg m-3 and 83.6-569 pg m-3) were significantly higher and did not temporally decline, indicating that improvement in e-waste recycling techniques does not significantly reduce emissions of PBDEs. NBFRs dominated the BFRs at the urban sites (55% on average), while PBDEs were still dominant (78%) at the e-waste sites. PBDE congener profiles in PM2.5 were substantially different from those in commercial mixtures. The congener profiles as well as their correlations suggested frequent formation of lower brominated PBDEs from degradation of highly brominated congeners in this region, which became appreciable due to the reduced emissions. The significant correlations among the lower brominated congeners also reflected similar environmental behaviors due to similar physicochemical properties.
