A neutron star (NS) accreting matter from a companion star in a low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) system can spin up to become a millisecond pulsar (MSP). Properties of many such MSP systems are known, which is excellent for probing fundamental aspects of NS physics when modelled using the theoretical computation of NS LMXB evolution. Here, we systematically compute the long-term evolution of NS, binary and companion parameters for NS LMXBs using the stellar evolution code MESA. We consider the baryonic to gravitational mass conversion to calculate the NS mass evolution and show its cruciality for the realistic computation of some parameters. With computations using many combinations of parameter values, we find the general nature of the complex NS spin frequency ($\nu$) evolution, which depends on various parameters, including accretion rate, fractional mass loss from the system, and companion star magnetic braking. Further, we utilize our results to precisely match some main observed parameters, such as $\nu$, orbital period ($P_{\rm orb}$), etc., of four accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars (AMXPs). By providing the $\nu$, $P_{\rm orb}$ and the companion mass spaces for NS LMXB evolution, we indicate the distribution and plausible evolution of a few other AMXPs. We present a comprehensive analysis of the X-ray spectral properties of 198 newly identified active galactic nuclei (AGNs), leveraging archival data from the {\it Chandra} X-ray Observatory. All these AGNs exhibit a powerlaw spectral signature spanning a broad energy range of $0.5-7.0$ keV, characterized by the photon index ($\Gamma$) values ranging from $0.3^{+0.16}_{-0.14}$ to $2.54^{+0.14}_{-0.13}$. Particularly, 76 of these AGNs display discernible levels of intrinsic absorption, after considering the Galactic absorption. The column densities associated with this local absorption ($n_{\rm H}^{\rm local}$) are within a range of $\sim 10^{19} - 10^{22}\ {\rm cm^{-2}}$. We study the cosmological evolution of AGNs using the variation of $n_{\rm H}^{\rm local}$ and $\Gamma$ with their estimated redshift. The intrinsic spectral signature did not reveal any significant cosmological evolution; however, a deficit of hard sources at high redshift is possibly intrinsic. Our sample covers several decades of broadband intrinsic luminosity ($L_{\rm B}^{\rm intr}$) ranging from $4.59^{+0.41}_{-0.41} \times 10^{42}$ to $2.4^{+0.12}_{-0.12} \times 10^{46}\, {\rm erg~s}^{-1}$ with peak at 1.84 redshift. We also investigate the hardness-luminosity diagram (HLD) to further probe the AGNs. The accreting collapsed object GRO J1655-40 could contain the gravitomagnetic monopole (GMM), and it was shown to be better described by the Kerr-Taub-NUT (KTN) spacetime instead of the Kerr spacetime. The warped accretion disk has also been observed for the same collapsed object. Motivated by these, we study a tilted thin inner accretion disk around a slowly-spinning KTN black hole that contains a small GMM. Such a tilting could have a significant effect on the X-ray spectral and timing features via the Lense-Thirring effect. Taking into account the contribution from the inner accretion disk for the KTN black hole, here we calculate the radial profile of a tilt angle. Depending on the numerical values of the viscosity of the accreting material and Kerr parameter, we show that the GMM tends the angular momentum of the disk to align along the black hole's spin axis, or to make it more tilted. Our solution for the radial profile of the tilted disk around a KTN black hole could be useful to probe the strong gravity regime, and could also give indirect evidence for the existence of GMM in nature., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

EXO 0748-676 is a well-studied neutron star (NS) Low Mass X-ray Binary (LMXB) that recently emerged from 16 years of quiescence into a new outburst. Here, we report the results from a 53 ks XMM-Newton observation to compare with studies for the previous outburst, particularly focusing on high-resolution spectroscopy using the same instrument (RGS) that produced important results for this source during the previous outburst. The EPIC light curve reveals a type I X-ray burst at MJD 60492.31. The entire data are divided into burstless, pre-, and post-burst spectra to understand the effect of the burst on the ionization structure. The spectra for dip and non-dip phases are also created. The primary spectral feature in all phases is a broad O VII recombination line, along with velocity-broadened OVIII, NVII, and Ne IX lines. Notably, the Ne IX line is detected at different ionization states for the pre-burst (11.65 \AA) and post-burst (13.56 \AA) phases. The O VIII line profile also shows a difference in equivalent width between dip and non-dip phases. These findings suggest the presence of highly ionized circumstellar material or collisionally ionized gas affected by the burst and dips. X-ray observations of neutron star (NS) low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) are useful to probe physical processes close to the NS and to constrain source parameters. Aql X-1 is a transient NS LMXB which frequently undergoes outbursts provides an excellent opportunity to study source properties and accretion mechanism in strong gravity regime over a wide range of accretion rates. In this work, we systematically investigate the spectral evolution of Aql X-1 using NICER observations during the source outbursts in 2019 and 2020. The NICER observations cover the complete transition of the source from its canonical hard state to soft state and back. The spectra extracted from most observations can be explained by a partially Comptonised accretion disc. We find that the system can be described by an accretion disk with an inner temperature of $\approx0.7$ keV and a Comptonising medium of thermal electrons at $\approx2$ keV, while the photon index is strongly degenerate with the covering fraction of the medium. We also find evidence of Fe K$\alpha$ fluorescence emission in the spectra indicating reprocessing of the Comptonised photons. We observe an absorption column density higher than the Galactic column density for most of the observations indicating a significant local absorption. XB 1254-690 is a neutron star low-mass X-ray binary with an orbital period of 3.88 hrs, and it exhibits energy-dependent intensity dips, thermonuclear bursts, and flares. We present the results of an analysis of a long observation of this source using the AstroSat satellite. The X-ray light curve gradually changed from a high-intensity flaring state to a low-intensity one with a few dips. The hardness intensity diagram showed that the source is in a high-intensity banana state with a gradually changing flux. Based on this, we divide the observation into four flux levels for a flux-resolved spectral study. The X-ray spectra can be explained by a model consisting of absorption, thermal emission from the disc and non-thermal emission from the corona. From our studies, we detect a correlation between the temperature of the thermal component and the flux and we examine the implications of our results for the accretion disc geometry of this source., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 11 pages, 12 figures

We present the first X-ray spectropolarimetric results for Cygnus X-1 in its soft state from a campaign of five IXPE observations conducted during 2023 May-June. Companion multiwavelength data during the campaign are likewise shown. The 2-8 keV X-rays exhibit a net polarization degree PD=1.99%+/-0.13% (68% confidence). The polarization signal is found to increase with energy across IXPE's 2-8 keV bandpass. The polarized X-rays exhibit an energy-independent polarization angle of PA=-25.7+/-1.8 deg. East of North (68% confidence). This is consistent with being aligned to Cyg X-1's AU-scale compact radio jet and its pc-scale radio lobes. In comparison to earlier hard-state observations, the soft state exhibits a factor of 2 lower polarization degree, but a similar trend with energy and a similar (also energy-independent) position angle. When scaling by the natural unit of the disk temperature, we find the appearance of a consistent trendline in the polarization degree between soft and hard states. Our favored polarimetric model indicates Cyg X-1's spin is likely high (a* above ~0.96). The substantial X-ray polarization in Cyg X-1's soft state is most readily explained as resulting from a large portion of X-rays emitted from the disk returning and reflecting off the disk surface, generating a high polarization degree and a polarization direction parallel to the black hole spin axis and radio jet. In IXPE's bandpass, the polarization signal is dominated by the returning reflection emission. We present the discovery of X-ray polarization from the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary and Z-source, GX~340$+$0, using an Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observation in March 2024. Along with the IXPE observation, we conducted an extensive X-ray and radio monitoring campaign to ascertain the source properties during and around the IXPE observation. The source was within the horizontal branch throughout the multiwavelength campaign. We measured a significant X-ray polarization in 2--8 keV with polarization degree (PD) = $4.02 \pm 0.35$% and polarization angle (PA) = $37.6 \pm 2.5^\circ$. The energy-dependent polarization indicates that in the 2-2.5 keV energy range, the PA is much lower, $\sim9\pm8^\circ$, while other energy bands are consistent with the PA found over 2.5--8 keV. The simultaneous AstroSat-IXPE spectro-polarimetric observations provide some evidence for independent polarization from various spectral components, hinting at a disparity in the PA from the accretion disk and the Comptonized emission, while suggesting an unpolarized emission from the blackbody component. Radio observations in the 0.7--9 GHz frequency range reveal a non-detection of radio emission in 0.7-1.5 GHz and a significant detection in 5.5--9 GHz, suggesting the presence of a spectral break in 1.5-5.5 GHz. Using ATCA observation we place upper limits on the radio polarization at $<$6% on the linear polarization and $<$4% on the circular polarization at 3$\sigma$ level. Near-solar mass black holes (BHs) could have been involved in the two recent gravitational wave events, GW190425 and GW190814. Since such a low mass BH cannot be formed via stellar evolution, a model has been proposed based on the core collapse of a neutron star initiated by a certain number of dark matter (DM) particles. In this process, the accumulated DM particles collapse to form a tiny BH inside the neutron star, and the entire neutron star is transmuted into a BH after a certain time due to the accretion of matter by the endoparasitic BH from its host. Here, we argue that, depending on the initial conditions, a dark core collapse could give rise to either a BH or a naked singularity. For example, if the accumulated cloud of DM particles in the core of a neutron star can be modeled as an anisotropic fluid and it fulfils the criterion for collapse, an endoparasitic naked singularity could form instead of an endoparasitic BH. Immediately after its formation, the naked singularity should begin accreting matter from the host neutron star, thus eventually transmuting the entire host into a near-solar mass, relatively slowly-spinning naked singularity. We also propose a general technique to constrain the DM particle--neutron scattering cross section using the lack of pulsars near the Galactic centre and assuming that these missing pulsars have already been transmuted into BHs and/or naked singularities. The timing properties of the Z-type low-mass X-ray binaries provide insights into the emission components involved in producing the unique Z-shaped track in the hardness-intensity diagrams of these sources. In this work, we investigate the AstroSat and NICER observations of the GX 340+0 covering the complete 'Z'-track from the horizontal branch (HB) to the extended flaring branch (EFB). For the first time, we present the Z-track as seen in soft X-rays using the AstroSat/SXT and NICER (the soft colour is defined as a ratio of 3-6 keV to 0.5-3 keV). The shape of the track is distinctly different in soft X-rays, strongly suggesting the presence of additional components active in soft X-rays. The detailed timing analysis revealed significant quasi-periodic oscillation throughout the HB and the normal branch (NB) using LAXPC and the first NICER detection of 33.1 +/- 1.1 Hz horizontal branch oscillation (HBO) in 3-6 keV. The oscillations at the HB/NB vertex are observed to have higher frequencies (41-52 Hz) than the HB oscillations (16-31 Hz) and NB oscillations (6.2-8 Hz) but significantly lower rms (~1.6%). The HB oscillation is also limited to the energy range of 3-20 keV, indicating an association of HBO origin with the non-thermal component. Primordial black hole formation has been discussed widely, when density perturbations in the early universe cause matter to collapse gravitationally, giving rise to these ultra-compact objects. We propose that such a gravitational collapse also gives rise to primordial naked singularities, that would play an important role in the observable features of present universe. We consider two types of collapse scenarios that give rise to event-like and object-like visible singularities within a cosmological background. Recent gravitational wave events have suggested the existence of near-solar-mass black holes which cannot be formed via stellar evolution. This has opened up a tantalizing possibility of future detections of both black holes and naked singularities in this mass range. Existence of naked singularities is a topical and fundamental physics issue, but their formation mechanism is not yet clear. Here, we show that some white dwarfs can realistically transmute into black holes and naked singularities with a wide range of near- and sub-solar-mass values by capturing asymmetric or non-self-annihilating primordial dark matter (PDM) particles. We argue that, while a type Ia supernova due to the accumulation of dark matter at the core of a white dwarf could also be a possibility, the transmutation of a white dwarf into a black hole or a naked singularity is a viable consequence of the capture of non-self-annihilating PDM particles. These white dwarf transmutations can have a significant role in probing the physics of dark matter and compact objects, and could be tested using the rates and locations of mergers over the cosmological time scale., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, matches published version

Tidal disruption event (TDE) iPTF16fnl shows a relatively low optical flare with observationally very weak X-ray emission and the spectroscopic property that the helium emission line from the source dominates over the hydrogen emission line at early times. We explore these observed signatures by calculating spectral emission lines with the publicly available code, CLOUDY. We estimate five physical parameters by fitting the observed optical UV spectra on multiple days to a theoretical model of a steady-state, slim disk with a spherical outflow. The resultant key parameters among them are black hole mass $M_{\bullet} = (6.73 \pm 0.44) \times 10^5 M_{\odot}$, stellar mass $M_{\star} = (2.59 \pm 0.17) M_{\odot}$, and wind velocity $v_{\rm w} = 7447.43 \pm 183.9~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$. The disk-wind model also estimates the radiative efficiency to be $0.01\lesssim\eta\lesssim0.02$ over the observational time, resulting in the disk being radiatively inefficient, and the disk X-ray luminosity is consistent with the observed low luminosity. In our CLOUDY model, the filling factor of the wind is also estimated to be 0.8, suggesting that the wind is moderately clumpy. We reveal that the helium-to-hydrogen number density ratio of the wind lies between 0.1 and 0.15, which is nearly the same as the solar case, suggesting the tidally disrupted star is originally a main sequence star. Because the optical depth of the helium line is lower than the hydrogen line by two orders of magnitude, the helium line is significantly optically thinner than the hydrogen line. Consequently, our results indicate that the helium line luminosity dominates the hydrogen line luminosity due to the optical depth effect despite a small helium-to-hydrogen number density ratio value., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Physical Review D

Understanding the spectral evolution along the `Z'-shaped track in the hardness-intensity diagram of Z-sources, which are a class of luminous neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries, is crucial to probe accretion processes close to the neutron star. Here, we study the horizontal branch (HB) and the normal branch (NB) of the Z source GX 340+0 using $AstroSat$ data. We find that the HB and the NB appear as two different types of X-ray intensity dips, which can appear in any sequence and with various depths. Our $0.8-25$ ~keV spectra of dips and the hard apex can be modeled by the emissions from an accretion disk, a Comptonizing corona covering the inner disk, and the neutron star surface. We find, as the source moves onto the HB the corona is replenished and energized by the disk and a reduced amount of disk matter reaches the neutron star surface. We also conclude that quasi-periodic oscillations during HB/NB are strongly associated with the corona, and explain the evolution of strength and hard-lag of this timing feature using the estimated coronal optical depth evolution., Comment: Updating to the published version

We report a broadband investigation of the Z-type neutron star (NS) low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) GX 349+2 using AstroSat and NICER. AstroSat observed the source exhibiting large scale variability in its normal branch (NB) /flaring branch (FB) vertex and flaring branch (FB) and a moderate evolution during NICER observations. The power spectra exhibit very low-frequency noise (VLFN) and low-frequency noise (LFN)/flaring branch noise (FBN), described by a power law and an evolving Lorentzian. We investigate the energy dependence of variability components and their correlation with the spectral state to probe their origin. The joint spectra of GX 349+2 are modeled by two thermal and one non-thermal component. The source moves along the Z track, with the increasing accretion rate, further heating of the NS boundary layer, and increasing temperature/radius of the brightened hotspot at the disc-boundary layer interface/NS surface. A power law well represents the hard non-thermal coronal emission. As predicted by the gravitational redshift, we find a correlation between the line energy detected in NICER spectra and the inner disc radius with the Spearman rank correlation coefficient of 1. Using this correlation, we demonstrate the potential of a method to constrain the accreting compact object properties, including evolving continuum and line spectroscopy. We report the first detection of hard lag providing evidence of the VLFN originating from the accretion disc in NS LMXBs, representing fluctuation of propagation through the disc., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, 9 tables. We present a relativistic disk-corona model for a steady state advective accretion disk to explain the UV to X-ray spectral index $\alpha_{\text{OX}}$ evolution of \textbf{four} tidal disruption event (TDE) sources XMMSL2J1446, XMMSL1J1404, XMMSL1J0740, \textbf{and AT2018fyk}. The viscous stress in our model depends on gas ($P_g$) and total ($P_t$) pressures as $\tau_{r\phi} \propto P_g^{\mu} P_t^{1-\mu}$, where $\mu$ is a constant. We compare various steady and time-dependent sub-Eddington TDE accretion models along with our disk-corona model to the observed $\alpha_{\text{OX}}$ of TDE sources and find that the disk-corona model agrees with the observations better than the other models. We find that $\mu$ is much smaller than unity for TDE sources XMMSL2J1446, XMMSL1J1404, and XMMSL1J0740. We also compare the relativistic model with a non-relativistic disk-corona model. The relativistic accretion dynamics reduce the spectral index relative to the non-relativistic accretion by increasing the energy transport to the corona. We estimate the mass accretion rate for all the sources and find that the observed luminosity follows a nearly linear relation with the mass accretion rate. The ratio of X-ray luminosity from the disk to the corona increases with the mass accretion rate. The observed $\alpha_{\text{OX}}$ shows positive and negative correlations with luminosity. The disk-corona model explains the negative correlation seen in the TDE sources XMMSL1J0740, XMMSL2J1446, and XMMSL1J1404. However, TDE AT2018fyk shows a positive correlation at higher luminosity and shows a better fit when a simple spherical adiabatic outflow model is added to the relativistic disk-corona model. We conduct a spectro-polarimetric study of the accreting X-ray pulsar Hercules X-1 using observations with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). IXPE monitored the source in three different Epochs, sampling two Main-on and one Short-on state of the well-known super-orbital period of the source. We find that the 2-7 keV polarization fraction increases significantly from ~ $7-9$ % in the Main-on state to ~ $15-19$ % in the Short-on state, while the polarization angle remains more or less constant or changes slightly, ~ $47-59$ degrees, in all three Epochs. The polarization degree and polarization angle are consistent with being energy-independent for all three Epochs. We propose that in the Short-on state, when the neutron star is partially blocked by the disk warp, the increase in the polarization fraction can be explained as a result of the preferential obstruction of one of the magnetic poles of the neutron star., Comment: 7 pages, 4 Figures, 1 Table, accepted for publication in ApJL

A large number of unidentified sources found by astronomical surveys and other observations necessitate the use of an automated classification technique based on machine learning methods. The aim of this paper is to find a suitable automated classifier to identify the point X-ray sources in the Chandra Source Catalogue (CSC) 2.0 in the categories of active galactic nuclei (AGN), X-ray emitting stars, young stellar objects (YSOs), high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), ultra luminous X-ray sources (ULXs), cataclysmic variables (CVs), and pulsars. The catalogue consists of approx 3,17,000 sources, out of which we select 2,77,069 point sources based on the quality flags available in CSC 2.0. In order to identify unknown sources of CSC 2.0, we use multi-wavelength features, such as magnitudes in optical/UV bands from Gaia-EDR3, SDSS and GALEX, and magnitudes in IR bands from 2MASS, WISE and MIPS-Spitzer, in addition to X-ray features (flux and variability) from CSC 2.0. We find the Light Gradient Boosted Machine, an advanced decision tree-based machine learning classification algorithm, suitable for our purpose and achieve $93\%$ precision, $93\%$ recall score and 0.91 Mathew's Correlation coefficient score. With the trained classifier, we identified 54,770 (14,066) sources with more than $3{\sigma}$ (4${\sigma}$) confidence, out of which there are 32,600 (8,574) AGNs, 16,148 (5,166) stars, 5,184 (208) YSOs, 439 (46) HMXBs, 197 (71) LMXBs, 50 (0) ULXs, 89 (1) CVs, and 63 (0) pulsars. We present both a disc-wind model on the optical/UV emission continuum and CLOUDY modelling on the spectral lines of the tidal disruption event (TDE) iPTF16axa to understand the disc-wind emission and the properties of the atmosphere that impacts the line luminosity of the TDE. Assuming the optical/UV emission from the wind due to the disc super-Eddington phase, we use the steady structured disc-wind model with a spherical wind with constant velocity to fit the observations on multiple days. The extracted parameters are stellar-mass $M_{\star} = 6.20 \pm 1.19 M_{\odot}$, disc radiative efficiency $\log_{\rm 10}(\eta) = -1.22 \pm 1.327$, wind inner radius $r_l = (2.013 \pm 0.551) \times 10^{14}~{\rm cm}$ and velocity $v_w = 18999.4 \pm 1785.1 ~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$. The photosphere temperature for wind emission is $ \sim 2 \times 10^4~{\rm K}$ and the disc single blackbody temperature is $\sim 0.995 \times 10^5~{\rm K}$. We also perform CLOUDY modelling to explain the observed He and H line luminosities that estimate a wind inner radius $r_l = 7.07 \times 10^{14}~{\rm cm}$ and velocity $v_w = 1.3 \times 10^4~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$. The independent analyses of iPTF16axa using CLOUDY and disc-wind models show comparable results that agree with observations. The CLOUDY modelling finds that both the super solar abundance of He and a smaller He II line optical depth is responsible for the enhancement of He II line luminosity over the H$\alpha$ line luminosity. Tidal disruption events (TDEs) show a correlation between the UV to X-ray spectral index and the Eddington ratio, with non-thermal X-ray emission at the low Eddington ratio. We consider the corona surrounding the accretion disc as a non-thermal X-ray source. We construct a time-dependent and non-relativistic advective accretion disc-corona model for TDEs. The infalling debris is assumed to form a seed disc in time $t_c$, that evolves due to the mass gain from the infalling debris at the constant outer radius with a mass fallback rate $\dot{M}_{\rm fb}$ and the mass loss through accretion onto the black hole. The viscous stress in our model depends on gas ($P_g$) and total ($P_t$) pressures as $\tau_{r\phi} \propto P_g^{1-\mu} P_t^{\mu}$, where $\mu$ is a constant. We find that the mass accretion rate $\dot{M}_a$ evolves from Eddington to sub-Eddington accretion with a late-time evolution close to $t^{-5/3}$, where $t$ is the time. We find that the bolometric disc luminosity follows a late-time evolution close to $t^{-5/3}$. The ratio of total X-ray luminosity from corona to bolometric disc luminosity increases with $\mu$ and increases at late times for $\mu \neq 1$. We obtain the X-ray blackbody temperature of the disc that agrees with the temperature from X-ray observations ($\sim~10^5~{\rm K}$). We find the radiative efficiency of the disc increases with time and decreases for a disc when the corona is included. A primordial black hole (PBH) is thought to be made of the regular matter or ordinary mass ($M$) only, and hence could have already been decayed due to the Hawking radiation if its initial ordinary mass were $\lesssim 5 \times 10^{11}$ kg. Here, we study the role of gravitomagnetic monopole for the evaporation of PBHs, and propose that the lower energy PBHs (equivalent to ordinary mass $M << 5\times 10^{11}$ kg) could still exist in our present Universe, if it has gravitomagnetic monopole. If a PBH was initially made of both regular matter and gravitomagnetic monopole, the regular matter could decay away due to the Hawking radiation. The remnant gravitomagnetic monopole might not entirely decay, which could still be found as a PBH in the form of the pseudo `mass-energy'. If a PBH with $M \gtrsim 5 \times 10^{11}$ kg is detected, one may not be able to conclude if it has gravitomagnetic monopole. But, a plausible detection of a relatively low energy (equivalent to $2.176 \times 10^{-8}$ kg $< M \lesssim 5\times10^{11}$ kg) PBH in future may imply the existence of a gravitomagnetic monopole PBH, which may or may not contain the ordinary mass., Comment: 6 pages, accepted for publication in Phys. We report the broadband spectro-temporal study of the poorly studied accreting neutron star (NS) low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) 4U 1724-30 using data from Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) and Large Area X-ray Proportional Counters (LAXPC) instruments on board AstroSat. The dim persistent LMXB source was observed with AstroSat over 4 epochs in 2017, all of which corresponded to a low-luminosity non-thermal emission dominated (hard/island) emission state with modest spectral evolution. All the X-ray broadband spectra can be modelled by a combination of thermal emission from the NS boundary layer (BL) or NS surface and a non-thermal emission component possibly originating from the inverse Comptonization of the disc seed photons. We investigate the presence of frequency and energy-dependent variabilities to probe the origin of the disc/coronal fluctuations. We also report the detection of a Type-I X-ray burst displaying a photospheric radius expansion (PRE). During the burst, a hard X-ray shortage in the 30-80 keV energy band and the enhancement of the persistent emission reveal the burst feedback on the overall accretion process. Using the touch-down burst flux $\sim$ $4.25 \times 10^{-8}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, the distance of the source is estimated as $\sim$ 8.4 kpc., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 6 tables. We present the broadband spectral analysis of all the six hard, intermediate and soft state NuSTAR observations of the recently discovered transient black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1348-630 during its first outburst in 2019. We first model the data with a combination of a multi-colour disc and a relativistic blurred reflection, and, whenever needed, a distant reflection. We find that this simple model scheme is inadequate in explaining the spectra, resulting in a very high iron abundance. We, therefore, explore the possibility of reflection from a high-density disc. We use two different sets of models to describe the high-density disc reflection: relxill-based reflection models, and reflionx-based ones. The reflionx-based high-density disc reflection models bring down the iron abundance to around the solar value, while the density is found to be $10^{20.3-21.4} \rm cm^{-3}$. We also find evidence of a high-velocity outflow in the form of $\sim$7.3 keV absorption lines. The consistency between the best-fit parameters for different epochs and the statistical significance of the corresponding model indicates the existence of high-density disc reflection in MAXI J1348-630., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report results obtained from the study of 12 thermonuclear X-ray bursts in 6 AstroSat observations of a neutron star X-ray binary and well-known X-ray burster, 4U 1636$-$536. Burst oscillations at $\sim$581 Hz are observed with 4$-$5$\sigma$ confidence in three of these X-ray bursts. The rising phase burst oscillations show a decreasing trend of the fractional rms amplitude at 3$\sigma$ confidence,by far the strongest evidence of thermonuclear flame spreading observed with AstroSat. During the initial 0.25 second of the rise a very high value (34.0$\pm$6.7%) is observed. The concave shape of the fractional amplitude profile provides a strong evidence of latitude-dependent flame speeds, possibly due to the effects of the Coriolis force. We observe decay phase oscillations with amplitudes comparable to that observed during the rising phase, plausibly due to the combined effect of both surface modes as well as the cooling wake. The Doppler shifts due to the rapid rotation of the neutron star might cause hard pulses to precede the soft pulses, resulting in a soft lag. The distance to the source estimated using the PRE bursts is consistent with the known value of $\sim$6 kpc., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report a detailed modelling of soft X-ray emission lines from two stellar-wind fed Galactic high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) systems, Cyg X-3 and 4U 1538-522, and estimate physical parameters, e.g., hydrogen density, radiation field, chemical abundances, wind velocity, etc. The spectral synthesis code CLOUDY is utilized for this modelling. We model highly ionised X-ray spectral lines such as Fe XXV (6.700 keV), Fe XXVI (6.966 keV), and reproduce the observed line flux values. We find that for Cyg X--3 and 4U 1538-522, the inner radius of the ionised gas is at a distance of 10$^{12.25}$ cm and 10$^{10.43}$ cm respectively from the primary star, which is the main source of ionisation. The densities of the ionised gas for Cyg X--3 and 4U 1538--522 are found to be $\sim$ 10$^{11.35}$ cm$^{-3}$ and 10$^{11.99}$ cm$^{-3}$, respectively. The corresponding wind velocities are 2000 km s$^{-1}$ and 1500 km s$^{-1}$. The respective predicted hydrogen column densities for Cyg X--3 and 4U 1538--522 are $10^{23.2}$ cm$^{-2}$ and 10$^{22.25}$ cm$^{-2}$. In addition, we find that a magnetic field affects the strength of the spectral lines through cyclotron cooling. Hence, we perform separate model comparisons including a magnetic field for both the sources. Most of the parameters, except the hydrogen column density, have similar values with and without a magnetic field. We estimate that the most probable strength of the magnetic field for Cyg X--3 and 4U 1538--522, where the Fe XXV and Fe XXVI lines originate, is $\sim$ 10$^{2.5}$G., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 10 pages, 8 figures and 10 tables

We present a comprehensive multi-frequency study of the HBL 1ES 1959+650 using data from various facilities during the period 2016-2017, including X-ray data from {\it AstroSat} and {\it Swift} during the historically high X-ray flux state of the source observed until February 2021. The unprecedented quality of X-ray data from high cadence monitoring with the {\it AstroSat} during 2016-2017 enables us to establish a detailed description of X-ray flares in 1ES 1959+650. The synchrotron peak shifts significantly between different flux states, in a manner consistent with a geometric (changing Doppler factor) interpretation. A time-dependent leptonic diffusive-shock-acceleration and radiation transfer model is used to reproduce the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and X-ray light curves, to provide insight into the particle acceleration during the major activity periods observed in 2016 and 2017. Nuclear-powered X-ray millisecond pulsars are the third type of millisecond pulsars, which are powered by thermonuclear fusion processes. The corresponding brightness oscillations, known as burst oscillations, are observed during some thermonuclear X-ray bursts, when the burning and cooling accreted matter gives rise to an azimuthally asymmetric brightness pattern on the surface of the spinning neutron star. Apart from providing neutron star spin rates, this X-ray timing feature can be a useful tool to probe the fundamental physics of neutron star interior and surface. The Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) aboard the $AstroSat$ satellite is the first Indian X-ray telescope in space. It is a modest size X-ray telescope with a charge coupled device (CCD) camera in the focal plane, which provides X-ray images in the $\sim 0.3-8.0$ keV band. A forte of SXT is in providing undistorted spectra of relatively bright X-ray sources, in which it excels some current large CCD-based X-ray telescopes. An understanding of spin frequency ($\nu$) evolution of neutron stars in the low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) phase is essential to explain the observed $\nu$-distribution of millisecond pulsars (MSPs), and to probe the stellar and binary physics, including the possibility of continuous gravitational wave emission. Here, using numerical computations we conclude that $\nu$ can evolve in two distinctly different modes, as $\nu$ may approach a lower spin equilibrium value ($\nu_{\rm eq,per}$) for persistent accretion for a long-term average accretion rate ($\dot{M}_{\rm av}$) greater than a critical limit ($\dot{M}_{\rm av,crit}$), and may approach a higher effective spin equilibrium value ($\nu_{\rm eq,eff}$) for transient accretion for $\dot{M}_{\rm av} < \dot{M}_{\rm av,crit}$. For example, when $\dot{M}_{\rm av}$ falls below $\dot{M}_{\rm av,crit}$ for an initially persistent source, $\nu$ increases considerably due to transient accretion, which is counterintuitive. We also find that, contrary to what was suggested, a fast or sudden decrease of $\dot{M}_{\rm av}$ to zero in the last part of the LMXB phase is not essential for the genesis of spin-powered MSPs, and neutron stars could spin up in this $\dot{M}_{\rm av}$-decreasing phase. SwiftJ0243.6+6124, the first Galactic ultra-luminous X-ray pulsar, was observed during its 2017-2018 outburst with \emph{AstroSat} at both sub- and super-Eddington levels of accretionwith X-ray luminosities of $L_{X}{\sim}7{\times}10^{37}$ and $6{\times}10^{38}$$ergs^{-1}$, respectively.Our broadband timing and spectral observations show that X-ray pulsations at ${\sim}9.85\rm{s}$ have been detected up to 150keV when the source was accreting at the super-Eddington level.The pulse profiles are a strong function of both energy and source luminosity,showing a double-peaked profile with pulse fraction increasing from $\sim$$10{\%}$ at $1.65\rm{keV}$ to 40--80$\%$ at $70\rm{keV}$.The continuum X-ray spectra are well-modeled with a high energy cut-off power law($\Gamma$${\sim}$0.6-0.7) and one or two blackbody components with temperatures of $\sim$0.35$\rm{keV}$ and $1.2\rm{keV}$, depending on the accretion level.No iron line emission is observed at sub-Eddington level, while a broad emission feature at around 6.9keV is observed at the super-Eddington level, along with a blackbody radius($121-142\rm{km}$) that indicates the presence of optically thick outflows., Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

A fundamental difference between a neutron star (NS) and a black hole (BH) is the absence of a physical surface in the latter. For this reason, any remaining kinetic energy of the matter accreting onto a BH is advected inside its event horizon. In the case of an NS, on the contrary, accreting material is decelerated on the NS surface, and its kinetic energy is eventually radiated away. Copious soft photons produced by the NS surface will affect the properties of the Comptonised component dominating spectra of X-ray binaries in the hard state. Thus, parameters of the Comptonised spectra -- the electron temperature $kT_{\rm e}$ and the Compton $y$-parameter, could serve as an important tool for distinguishing BHs from NSs. In this paper, we systematically analyse heretofore the largest sample of spectra from the BH and NS X-ray binaries in the hard state for this purpose, using archival RXTE/PCA and RXTE/HEXTE observations. We find that the BHs and NSs occupy distinctly different regions in the $y-kT_{\rm e}$ plane with NSs being characterised by systematically lower values of $y$-parameter and electron temperature. Due to the shape of the boundary between BHs and NSs on the $y-kT_{\rm e}$ plane, their one-dimensional $y$ and $kT_{\rm e}$ distributions have some overlap. A cleaner one parameter diagnostic of the nature of the compact object in X-ray binaries is provided by the Compton amplification factor $A$, with the boundary between BHs and NSs lying at $A\approx 3.5-4$. MAXI J1820+070 is a newly discovered transient black hole X-ray binary, which showed several spectral and temporal features. In this work, we analyse the broadband X-ray spectra from all three simultaneously observing X-ray instruments onboard AstroSat, as well as contemporaneous X-ray spectra from NuSTAR, observed during the hard state of MAXI J1820+070 in March 2018. Implementing a combination of multi-colour disc model, relativistic blurred reflection model relxilllpCp and a distant reflection in the form of xillverCp, we achieve reasonable and consistent fits for AstroSat and NuSTAR spectra. The best-fit model suggests a low temperature disc ($kT_{\rm in} \sim 0.3$ keV), iron overabundance ($A_{\rm Fe} \sim 4-5$ solar), a short lamp-post corona height ($h \lesssim 8 R_{\rm g}$), and a high corona temperature ($kT_{\rm e} \sim 115-150$ keV). Addition of a second Comptonisation component leads to a significantly better fit, with the $kT_{\rm e}$ of the second Comptonisation component being $\sim 14-18$ keV. Our results from independent observations with two different satellites in a similar source state indicate an inhomogeneous corona, with decreasing temperature attributed to increasing height. Besides, utilising the broader energy coverage of AstroSat, we estimate the black hole mass to be $6.7-13.9 \ M_{\odot}$, consistent with independent measurements reported in the literature.

A millisecond pulsar having an ellipticity, that is an asymmetric mass distribution around its spin-axis, could emit continuous gravitational waves, which have not been detected so far. An indirect way to infer such waves is to estimate the contribution of the waves to the spin-down rate of the pulsar. The transitional pulsar PSR J1023+0038 is ideal and unique for this purpose, because this is the only millisecond pulsar for which the spin-down rate has been measured in both accreting and non-accreting states. Here we infer, from our formalism based on the complete torque budget equations and the pulsar magnetospheric origin of observed $\gamma$-rays in the two states, that PSR J1023+0038 should emit gravitational waves due to a permanent ellipticity of the pulsar. The formalism also explains some other main observational aspects of this source in a self-consistent way. As an example, our formalism naturally infers the accretion disc penetration into the pulsar magnetosphere, and explains the observed X-ray pulsations in the accreting state using the standard and well-accepted scenario. This, in turn, infers the larger pulsar spin-down power in the accreting state, which, in our formalism, explains the observed larger $\gamma$-ray emission in this state. Exploring wide ranges of parameter values of PSR J1023+0038, and not assuming an additional source of stellar ellipticity in the accreting state, we find the misaligned mass quadrupole moment of the pulsar in the range of $(0.92-1.88)\times10^{36}$ g cm$^2$, implying an ellipticity range of $(0.48-0.93)\times10^{-9}$., Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, 1 table, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Main Journal

We construct a time-dependent relativistic accretion model for tidal disruption events (TDEs) with an $\alpha-$viscosity and the pressure dominated by gas pressure. We also include the mass fallback rate $\dot{M}_f$ for both full and partial disruption TDEs, and assume that the infalling debris forms a seed disc in time $t_c$, which evolves due to the mass addition from the infalling debris and the mass loss via accretion onto the black hole. Besides, we derive an explicit form for the disc height that depends on the angular momentum parameter in the disc. We show that the surface density of the disc increases at an initial time due to mass addition, and then decreases as the mass fallback rate decreases, which results in a decrease in the disc mass $M_{\rm d}$ with a late-time evolution of $M_{\rm d} \propto t^{-1.05}$ and $M_{\rm d} \propto t^{-1.38}$ for full and partial disruption TDEs respectively, where $t$ is the time parameter. The bolometric luminosity $L$ shows a rise and decline that follows a power-law at late times given by $L \propto t^{-1.8}$ and $L \propto t^{-2.3}$ for full and partial disruption TDEs respectively. Our obtained luminosity declines faster than the luminosity inferred using $L \propto \dot{M}_f$. An estimate of the jet inclination angle relative to the accreting black hole's spin can be useful to probe the jet triggering mechanism and the disc--jet coupling. A Tidal Disruption Event (TDE) of a star by a supermassive spinning black hole provides an excellent astrophysical laboratory to study the jet direction through the possibility of jet precession. In this work, we report a new method to constrain the jet inclination angle $\beta$ and apply it to the well-sampled jetted TDE Swift J1644+57. This method involves X-ray data analysis and comparisons of jet models with broad properties of the observed X-ray dips, to estimate the upper limit of the extent of the contribution of a plausible jet precession to these X-ray dips. From this limit, we find that $\beta$ is very likely to be less than $\sim 15^\circ$ for Swift J1644+57. Such a well-constrained jet inclination angle could be useful to probe the jet physics. The main advantage of our method is that it does not need to assume an origin of the observed X-ray dips, and the conclusion does not depend on any particular type of jet precession (e.g., the one due to the Lense-Thirring effect) or any specific value of precession frequency or any particular jet model. A thin viscous accretion disc around a Kerr black hole, which is warped due to the Lense-Thirring (LT) effect, was shown to cause the spin axis of the black hole to precess and align with the outer disc. We calculate the total LT torque acting on the black hole, and compute the alignment and precession time-scales for both persistent and transient accretors. In our analysis, we consider the contribution of the inner disc, as it can stay misaligned with the black hole spin for a reasonable range of parameter values. We find that the alignment time-scale increases with a decrease in the Kerr parameter below a critical Kerr parameter value, contrary to earlier predictions. Besides, the time-scales are generally longer for transience than the time-scales calculated for persistent accretion. From our analysis of the transient case, we find that the black hole in the low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) 4U 1543-47 could be misaligned, whereas that in the LMXB XTE J1550-564 has aligned itself with the outer disc. The age of the LMXB H 1743-322 is estimated assuming a misaligned disc. We also find that the black hole in a typical Galactic LMXB can take a significantly longer time to align than what was estimated in the past. We report the results from \textit{AstroSat} observations of the transient Galactic black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1535-571 during its hard-intermediate state of the 2017 outburst. We systematically study the individual and joint spectra from two simultaneously observing \textit{AstroSat} X-ray instruments, and probe and measure a number of parameter values of accretion disc, corona and reflection from the disc in the system using models with generally increasing complexities. Using our broadband ($1.3-70$ keV) X-ray spectrum, we clearly show that a soft X-ray instrument, which works below $\sim 10-12$ keV, alone cannot correctly characterize the Comptonizing component from the corona, thus highlighting the importance of broadband spectral analysis. By fitting the reflection spectrum with the latest version of the \textsc{relxill} family of relativistic reflection models, we constrain the black hole's dimensionless spin parameter to be $0.67^{+0.16}_{-0.04}$. We also jointly use the reflection spectral component (\textsc{relxill}) and a general relativistic thin disc component (\texttt{Kerrbb}), and estimate the black hole's mass and distance to be $10.39_{-0.62}^{+0.61} M_{\odot}$ and $5.4_{-1.1}^{+1.8}$ kpc respectively., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) have a wide range of X-ray properties which can be utilised to reveal many physical conditions of the associated accretion discs. We use the spectral synthesis code CLOUDY to perform a detailed modelling of neutron star LMXBs GX 13+1, MXB 1659--298, 4U 1323--62 and XB 1916--053; and characterise the underlying physical conditions, such as density, radiation field, metallicity, wind velocity, etc. For this purpose we model highly ionised spectra of Fe, Ca, S, Si, Mg, Al in the soft X-ray band, and compare the predicted line flux ratios with the observed values. We also find that the strength and profile of these spectral lines get modified in the presence of magnetic field in the accretion disc. Using this, we estimate an upper limit of the existing magnetic field to be about a few hundred to a few thousand G in the accretion discs of these four LMXBs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 11 pages, 9 tables and 10 figures

It has recently been proposed that the accreting collapsed object GRO J1655--40 could contain a non-zero gravitomagnetic monopole, and hence could be better described with the more general Kerr-Taub-NUT (KTN) spacetime, instead of the Kerr spacetime. This makes the KTN spacetime astrophysically relevant. In this paper, we study properties of various circular orbits in the KTN spacetime, and find the locations of circular photon orbits (CPOs) and innermost-stable-circular-orbits (ISCOs). Such orbits are important to interpret the observed X-ray spectral and timing properties of accreting collapsed objects, viz., black holes and naked singularities. Here we show that the usual methods to find the ISCO radius do not work for certain cases in the KTN spacetime, and we propose alternate ways. For example, the ISCO equation does not give any positive real radius solution for particular combinations of Kerr and NUT parameter values for KTN naked singularities. In such a case, accretion efficiency generally reaches $100\%$ at a particular orbit of radius $r=r_0$, and hence we choose $r=r_0$ as the `ISCO' for practical purposes., Comment: 24 pages, revised version, published in JCAP

In this White Paper we present the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to Observatory Science targets. These include flaring stars, supernova remnants, accreting white dwarfs, low and high mass X-ray binaries, radio quiet and radio loud active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, and gamma-ray bursts. eXTP will be excellently suited to study one common aspect of these objects: their often transient nature.
