Abstract

Model-based design of experiments (MBDoE) is a powerful framework for selecting and calibrating science-based mathematical models from data. This work extends popular MBDoE workflows by proposing a convex mixed integer (non)linear programming (MINLP) problem to optimize the selection of measurements. The solver MindtPy is modified to support calculating the D-optimality objective and its gradient via an external package, \texttt{SciPy}, using the grey-box module in Pyomo. The new approach is demonstrated in two case studies: estimating highly correlated kinetics from a batch reactor and estimating transport parameters in a large-scale rotary packed bed for CO$_2$ capture. Both case studies show how examining the Pareto-optimal trade-offs between information content measured by A- and D-optimality versus measurement budget offers practical guidance for selecting measurements for scientific experiments.

Abstract

Energy systems and manufacturing processes of the 21st century are becoming increasingly dynamic and interconnected, which require new capabilities to effectively model and optimize their design and operations. Such next generation computational tools must leverage state-of-the-art techniques in optimization and be able to rapidly incorporate new advances. To address these requirements, we have developed the Institute for the Design of Advanced Energy Systems (IDAES) Integrated Platform, which builds on the strengths of both process simulators (model libraries) and algebraic modeling languages (advanced solvers). This paper specifically presents the IDAES Core Modeling Framework (IDAES-CMF), along with a case study demonstrating the application of the framework to solve process optimization problems. Capabilities provided by this framework include a flexible, modifiable, open-source platform for optimization of process flowsheets utilizing state-of-the-art solvers and solution techniques, fully open and extensible libraries of dynamic unit operations models and thermophysical property models, and integrated support for superstructure-based conceptual design and optimization under uncertainty.

Abstract

Diamine-appended metal-organic frameworks exhibiting step-shaped CO2 adsorption are exceptional candidates for energy-efficient carbon capture. However, there are few studies examining their performance in real-world capture scenarios, in part due to the challenge inherent in modeling their CO2 uptake behavior. Here, we develop a dual-site Sips model to fit experimental CO2 adsorption data for dmpn-Mg2(dobpdc) (dmpn = 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-diaminopropane; dobpdc4- = 4,4′-dioxidobiphenyl-3,3′-dicarboxylate) and develop a linear driving force model for the adsorption kinetics based on available experimental data. These models are used to develop a dynamic, fixed bed, nonisothermal contactor model using shaped particles of the material, which is validated with experimental breakthrough data. We also examine the effects of the high heat of adsorption of the material on CO2 uptake performance and find that heat removal is essential to maximize capture performance. We finally investigate "basic"(no bed cooling during adsorption) and "modified"(bed cooling during adsorption) temperature swing adsorption (TSA) processes using dmpn-Mg2(dobpdc), and their process economics are compared to a state-of-the-art monoethanolamine (MEA) capture system with and without heat recovery. In the absence of heat recovery, the adsorbent systems are more costly than established technology. However, with 85% heat recovery, both adsorbent-based TSA processes are projected to cost less than the MEA system. This work highlights that thermal management is vital for implementation of dmpn-Mg2(dobpdc) as a viable CO2 capture technology. Investigation of other contactor technologies that can provide unique ways to manage system heat represent promising future areas of study.

Abstract

Solid oxide cells (SOCs) are a promising dual‐mode technology for the production of hydrogen through high‐temperature water electrolysis, and the generation of power through a fuel cell reaction that consumes hydrogen. Switching between these two modes as the price of electricity fluctuates requires reversible SOC operation and accurate tracking of hydrogen and power production set points. Moreover, a well‐functioning control system is important to avoid cell degradation during mode‐switching operation. In this article, we apply nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) to an SOC module and supporting equipment and compare NMPC performance to classical proportional‐integral (PI) control strategies, while switching between the modes of hydrogen and power production. While both control methods provide similar performance across various metrics during mode switching, NMPC demonstrates a significant advantage in reducing cell thermal gradients and curvatures (mixed spatial‐temporal partial derivatives), thereby helping to mitigate long‐term degradation. 32. Multi-Scale Dynamic Modeling of Radial Flow Fixed Bed Contactors for CO2Capture Using a Functionalized Metal–Organic Framework

Abstract

For solid sorbent-based postcombustion CO2capture, the contactor technology plays a crucial role in achieving the desired level of technical and economic performance. In this work, radial flow fixed bed (RFFB) contactor technology is investigated. These beds offer considerably lower pressure drop compared with conventional axial flow fixed bed technology. Furthermore, they offer many possible options for flow configurations that can be exploited during cycle design to achieve the high potential of a sorbent. A functionalized metal–organic framework (MOF) that exhibits a step-like isotherm is studied as the sorbent of choice. The MOF has a high heat of adsorption, and due to the steep isotherm, there can be considerable local temperature change upon adsorption/desorption that can considerably affect its performance. To obtain particle level resolution of the transport variables and resulting performance, a particle scale model is developed and coupled with a model of the bulk-scale leading to a multiscale model of the radial flow bed. A multiscale model of an axial flow bed is also developed for comparing the model results with the experimental breakthrough data for the functionalized metal–organic framework. Co-flow and counter-current flow configurations are modeled. An economic model is developed. Operating conditions are optimized. Considering the utility prices for 2017, it is observed that the optimal counter-current and cocurrent RFFBs have 19 and 22.6% lower equivalent annual operating cost (EAOC), respectively, compared to that for the axial flow beds and 13.1 and 17% lower EAOC, respectively, compared to that for the monoethanolamine (MEA)-based capture. For the 2023 utility price, optimal counter- and cocurrent RFFBs have 40.9 and 44.8% lower EAOC, respectively, compared to the MEA-based capture. It is observed that the cocurrent radial flow bed with the flue gas entering at the outer annulus has the best economic performance for this metal–organic framework compared to the counter-current radial flow beds, axial flow beds, and the MEA-based capture.
