We present measurements of diffuse ultraviolet emission in the dwarf irregular galaxy Holmberg II obtained with the UltraViolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard AstroSat. With a spatial resolution of 1.2 to 1.6 arcsec, these are the highest resolution UV observations of the galaxy to date. We find that diffuse emission accounts for 70.6 % (58.1 %) of the total FUV(NUV) emission, respectively. We perform a UV-IR correlation study of the diffuse emission in this galaxy using infrared observations from Spitzer Space Telescope and Herschel Space Observatory for selected locations, free of detectable bright point sources. The strongest positive correlation between FUV and IR is observed at 70 micron for high HI density locations, indicating that warm dust grains dominate the IR emission, in agreement with earlier studies, while NUV is better correlated with 160 micron emission associated with cold dust grains. Low HI density regions or cavities, do not show any significant UV-IR correlation except at 160 micron, implying either the presence of colder dust grains in cavities, being irradiated by the general radiation field, or insufficient amount of dust. The dust scattering contribution in high HI density regions, estimated using a single scattering model with foreground dust clouds with LMC reddening, gives best-fit albedo and asymmetry factor values of 0.2 and 0.5, respectively, in reasonable agreement with the theoretical predictions for LMC dust. Our model derived scattering optical depths in the FUV range from 0.02 to 0.12, implying the medium is optically thin. Therefore, in high HI density regions, dust scattering can be one the sources of the observed diffuse UV emission, apart from possible contributions from molecular hydrogen fluorescence, However, the diffuse UV component in HI cavities can only be explained via other mechanisms, such as two photon emission., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures

A comprehensive study of the nucleus and western hotspot of Pictor A is carried out using AstroSat observations, 13 years of Fermi, and archival Swift observations, along with other published data. We report the first detection of the western hotspot of Pictor A in the far-UV band using observations from AstroSat-UVIT. The broad-band SED of the western hotspot is explained by a multizone emission scenario where X-ray emission is caused by synchrotron emission process in the substructures embedded in the diffuse region, while the emission in radio to optical is caused by synchrotron emission process in the diffuse region. We do not notice any excess in the IR band and an additional zone (beyond 2-zone) is not required to account for the X-ray emission. Our broad-band spectro-temporal study and associated modelling of the core and hotspot of Pictor A suggests that (a) gamma-rays originate in the nuclear jet and not from the hotspot (b) X-ray emission from the core of Pictor A has nuclear jet-origin instead of previously reported disk-origin., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We carried out a detailed study of the temporal and broadband spectral behaviour of one of the brightest misaligned active galaxies in gamma-rays, NGC 1275 utilising 11 years of Fermi, and available Swift and AstroSat observations. Based on the cumulative flux distribution of the gamma-ray lightcurve, we identified four distinct activity states and noticed an increase in the baseline flux during the first three states. Similar nature of the increase in the average flux was also noticed in X-ray and UV bands. A large flaring activity in gamma-rays was noticed in the fourth state. The source was observed twice by AstroSat for shorter intervals (~days) during the longer observing periods (~years) state 3 and 4. During AstroSat observing periods, the source gamma-ray flux was higher than the average flux observed during longer duration states. The increase in the average baseline flux from state 1 to state 3 can be explained considering a corresponding increase of jet particle normalisation. The inverse Comptonisation of synchrotron photons explained the average X-ray and gamma-ray emission by jet electrons during the first three longer duration states. However, during the shorter duration AstroSat observing periods, a shift of the synchrotron peak frequency was noticed, and the synchrotron emission of jet electrons well explained the observed X-ray flux., Comment: Corrected AstroSat-SXT and LAXPC instrument description in Section 2.2.2 and updated references to match the published version. By analyzing the time series of RXTE/PCA data, the nonlinear variabilities of compact sources have been repeatedly established. Depending on the variation in temporal classes, compact sources exhibit different nonlinear features. Sometimes they show low correlation/fractal dimension, but in other classes or intervals of time they exhibit stochastic nature. This could be because the accretion flow around a compact object is a nonlinear general relativistic system involving magnetohydrodynamics. However, the more conventional way of addressing a compact source is the analysis of its spectral state. Therefore, the question arises: What is the connection of nonlinearity to the underlying spectral properties of the flow when the nonlinear properties are related to the associated transport mechanisms describing the geometry of the flow? The present work is aimed at addressing this question. Based on the connection between observed spectral and nonlinear (time series) properties of two X-ray binaries: GRS 1915+105 and Sco X-1, we attempt to diagnose the underlying accretion modes of the sources in terms of known accretion classes, namely, Keplerian disc, slim disc, advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF) and general advective accretion flow (GAAF). We explore the possible transition of the sources from one accretion mode to others with time. We examine the long term (~10 years) gamma-ray variability of blazars observed by EGRET and Fermi and find that for six sources the average flux varied by more than an order of magnitude. For two of these sources (PKS 0208-512 and PKS 0528+134), there were extensive observations (at various observing periods) by EGRET. Hence these dramatic variations are not due to a single short time-scale flare, but reflect long term changes in the average flux. Over the last twenty years, these two sources were also the target of several X-ray observatories (e.g. ROSAT, ASCA, RXTE, BeppoSAX, Chandra, Suzaku, XMM-Newton and Swift). While the ratios of the average gamma-ray fluxes between EGRET and Fermi observations are 22.9 +/- 1.9 and 12.6 +/- 1.5, their estimated 2-10 keV X-ray flux do not show such dramatic variations. The X-ray emission from such flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) are believed to be due to synchrotron self Compton, while gamma-rays originate from inverse Comptonization of external soft photons from an accretion disk and/or broad line region. We argue that in this scenario, the only explanation for the uncorrelated variability is that there was an order of magnitude decrease in the external soft photons, while the jet parameters remained more or less constant. Since it was theorized by Kerr in 1963, determining the spin of black holes from observed data was paid very little attention until few years back. The main reasons behind this were the unavailability of adequate data and the lack of appropriate techniques. In this article, we explore determining/predicting the spin of several black holes in X-ray binaries and in the center of galaxies, using X-ray and gamma-ray satellite data. For X-ray binaries, in order to explain observed quasi-periodic oscillations, our model predicts the spin parameter of underlying black holes. On the other hand, the nature of spin parameters of black holes in BL Lacs and Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars is predicted by studying the total luminosities of systems based on Fermi gamma-ray data. Origin of extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGRB) is still a matter of debate. EGRB can either have truly diffuse or unresolved discrete point sources origin. Majority of the Fermi and EGRET detected identified sources are blazar. So, they are expected to be a significant contributors to the EGRB. In order to estimate their contribution to the EGRB one needs to construct their luminosity functions. Here, we examine and construct the evolution and luminosity function of blazars using first LAT AGN catalog. We consider both pure luminosity and pure density evolution models for flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs). The mechanism by which outflows and plausible jets are driven from black hole systems, still remains observationally elusive. Notwithstanding, several observational evidences and deeper theoretical insights reveal that accretion and outflow/jet are strongly correlated. We model an advective disk-outflow coupled dynamics, incorporating explicitly the vertical flux. Inter-connecting dynamics of outflow and accretion essentially upholds the conservation laws. We investigate the properties of the disk-outflow surface and its strong dependence on the rotation parameter of the black hole. The energetics of the disk-outflow strongly depend on the mass, accretion rate and spin of the black holes. The model clearly shows that the outflow power extracted from the disk increases strongly with the spin of the black hole, inferring that the power of the observed astrophysical jets has a proportional correspondence with the spin of the central object. In case of blazars (BL Lacs and Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars), most of their emission are believed to be originated from their jets. It is observed that BL Lacs are relatively low luminous than Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs). The luminosity might be linked to the power of the jet, which in turn reflects that the nuclear regions of the BL Lac objects have a relatively low spinning black hole compared to that in the case of FSRQ. If the extreme gravity is the source to power strong outflows and jets, then the spin of the black hole, perhaps, might be the fundamental parameter to account for the observed astrophysical processes in an accretion powered system., Comment: 10 pages including 7 figures; final version to appear in ApJ
