We introduce an idealized model of an intelligent forager in which higher intelligence corresponds to a larger spatial range over which the forager can detect food. Such a forager diffuses randomly whenever the nearest food is more distant than the forager's detection range, $R$, and moves ballistically towards the nearest food inside its detection range. Concomitantly, the forager's metabolic energy cost per step is an increasing function of its intelligence. A dumb forager wanders randomly and may miss nearby food, thus making it susceptible to starvation. Conversely, a too-smart forager incurs a large metabolic cost per step during its search for food and is again susceptible to starvation. We report on the observation of rich variety of crystallographic phase formation in RexMo1-xS2 alloy for x < 0.5. For x < 0.23, no low dimensional super-structural modulation is observed and inter-cation hybridization remains discrete forming dimers to tetramers with increasing Re concentration. For x > 0.23, super-strutural modulaton is observed. Depending on the Re concentrations (x = 0.23, 0.32, 0.38 and 0.45) and its distributions, various types of cation hybridization results in rich variety of low dimensional super-structural modulation as directly revealed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. These layered alloy system may be useful for various energy and novel device applications.

We present results on growth of large area epitaxial ReS2 thin film both on c plane sapphire substrate and MoS2 template by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Films tend to grow with (0001) ReS2 perpendicular to (0001) Al2O3 and (0001) ReS2 perpendicular to (0001) MoS2 parallel to (0001) Al2O3 at deposition temperature below 300 deg C. Films are polycrystalline grown at temperature above 300 deg C. The smoothness and quality of the films are significantly improved when grown on MoS2 template compared to sapphire substrate. The results show that PLD is suitable to grow ReS2 epitaxial thin film over large area for practical device application.

We study the dynamics of a \emph{myopic} forager that randomly wanders on a lattice in which each site contains one unit of food. Upon encountering a food-containing site, the forager eats all the food at this site with probability $p<1$; otherwise, the food is left undisturbed. When the forager eats, it can wander $\mathcal{S}$ additional steps without food before starving to death. When the forager does not eat, either by not detecting food on a full site or by encountering an empty site, the forager goes hungry and comes one time unit closer to starvation. As the forager wanders, a multiply connected spatial region where food has been consumed---a desert---is created. The forager lifetime depends non-monotonically on its degree of myopia $p$, and at the optimal myopia $p=p^*(\mathcal{S})$, the forager lives much longer than a normal forager that always eats when it encounters food. This optimal lifetime grows as $\mathcal{S}^2/\ln\mathcal{S}$ in one dimension and faster than a power law in $\mathcal{S}$ in two and higher dimensions., Comment: 10 pages, 1o figures

We introduce the \emph{frugal foraging} model in which a forager performs a discrete-time random walk on a lattice, where each site initially contains $\mathcal{S}$ food units. The forager metabolizes one unit of food at each step and starves to death when it last ate $\mathcal{S}$ steps in the past. Whenever the forager decides to eat, it consumes all food at its current site and this site remains empty (no food replenishment). The crucial property of the forager is that it is \emph{frugal} and eats only when encountering food within at most $k$ steps of starvation. We compute the average lifetime analytically as a function of frugality threshold and show that there exists an optimal strategy, namely, a frugality threshold $k^*$ that maximizes the forager lifetime., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Van der Waals heterostructures of (TMDL=1/BNL=1-4/TMDL=1/BNL=1-4), [TMD = MoS2, WS2, and ReS2] are grown on c-plane sapphire substrate by pulsed laser deposition under slow kinetic condition. The heterostructure systems show strong emission around 2.3 eV and subsidiary peaks around 2.8, 1.9, 1.7 and 1.5 eV. BN and TMDs forms type-I heterojunction and the emission peaks observed are explained in terms of various band to band recombination processes and considering relative orientation of Brillouin Zones. The emission peak around 2.3eV is promising for solar and photovoltaic application. The observation is almost similar for three different heterostructure systems., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures

We investigate the dynamics of a greedy forager that moves by random walking in an environment where each site initially contains one unit of food. Upon encountering a food-containing site, the forager eats all the food there and can subsequently hop an additional $\mathcal{S}$ steps without food before starving to death. Upon encountering an empty site, the forager goes hungry and comes one time unit closer to starvation. We investigate the new feature of forager greed; if the forager has a choice between hopping to an empty site or to a food-containing site in its nearest neighborhood, it hops preferentially towards food. If the neighboring sites all contain food or are all empty, the forager hops equiprobably to one of these neighbors. Paradoxically, the lifetime of the forager can depend non-monotonically on greed, and the sense of the non-monotonicity is opposite in one and two dimensions. Even more unexpectedly, the forager lifetime in one dimension is substantially enhanced when the greed is negative; here the forager tends to avoid food in its local neighborhood. We also determine the average amount of food consumed at the instant when the forager starves. We investigate the role of greed on the lifetime of a random-walking forager on an initially resource-rich lattice. Whenever the forager lands on a food-containing site, all the food there is eaten and the forager can hop $\mathcal{S}$ more steps without food before starving. The forager is also greedy---given a choice to move to an empty or to a food-containing site in its local neighborhood, the forager moves preferentially towards food. High resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HR-EELS) is utilized to probe the surface spin canting in nanoparticles of two technologically important magnetic materials, i.e. Fe3O4 and CoFe2O4 (CFO). A soft experimental technique is developed that is capable of extracting EELS spectra with one atomic plane resolution recorded in a single frame. This yields information at different depth of the nanoparticle from the surface to the core regions with high signal to noise ratio and without beam damage. This enables comparing the fine structures between the surface and core regions of the nanoparticles. The results confirm earlier observations of uniformly oriented spin canting structure for CFO with additional information on atom site-selective spin canting information. In case of Fe3O4 preferred canting orientation forming core and shell structure is deduced. Unlike earlier reports based on polarized spin-flip neutron scattering measurement, it is possible to narrow down the possible canting angles for Fe3O4 (Td, Oh tilts 40{\deg}, 40{\deg}) and CFO (Td, Oh tilts 17{\deg}, 17{\deg}) from the experimental spectra combined with the first principle based calculation considering non-collinear magnetism. In addition, the role of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in stabilizing the spin canting at the nanoparticle surface is discussed. The results demonstrate that HREELS can be a powerful technique to probe the magnetic structure in nano-dimensional systems and has advantages over neutron based techniques in terms of superior spatial resolution, site specific information and easy of sample preparation.

We report on the various types of Peierls like two dimensional structural modulations and relative phase stability of 2H and 1T poly-types in MoS2-ReS2 and WS2-ReS2 alloy system. Theoretical calculation predicts a polytype phase transition cross over at ~50 at.% of Mo and W in ReS2 in both monolayer and bulk form, respectively. Experimentally, two different types of structural modulations at 50% and a modulation corresponding to trimerization at 75% alloy composition is observed for MoS2-ReS2 and only one type of modulation is observed at 50% WS2-ReS2 alloy system. The 50% alloy system is found to be a suitable monolithic candidate for metal semiconductor transition with minute external perturbation. ReS2 is known to be in 2D Peierls distorted 1Td structure and forms a chain like superstructure. Incorporation of Mo and W atoms in the ReS2 lattice modifies the metal-metal hybridization between the cations and influences the structural modulation and electronic property of the system. The results offer yet another effective way to tune the electronic structure and poly-type phases of this class of materials other than intercalation, strain, and vertical stacking arrangement.

We introduce a growing network model---the copying model---in which a new node attaches to a randomly selected target node and, in addition, independently to each of the neighbors of the target with copying probability $p$. When $p<\frac{1}{2}$, this algorithm generates sparse networks, in which the average node degree is finite. A power-law degree distribution also arises, with a non-universal exponent whose value is determined by a transcendental equation in $p$. In the sparse regime, the network is "normal", e.g., the relative fluctuations in the number of links are asymptotically negligible. For $p\geq \frac{1}{2}$, the emergent networks are dense (the average degree increases with the number of nodes $N$) and they exhibit intriguing structural behaviors. In particular, the $N$-dependence of the number of $m$-cliques (complete subgraphs of $m$ nodes) undergoes $m-1$ transitions from normal to progressively more anomalous behavior at a $m$-dependent critical values of $p$. Different realizations of the network, which start from the same initial state, exhibit macroscopic fluctuations in the thermodynamic limit---absence of self averaging. When linking to second neighbors of the target node can occur, the number of links asymptotically grows as $N^2$ as $N\to\infty$, so that the network is effectively complete as $N\to \infty$., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

We introduce an evolving network model in which a new node attaches to a randomly selected target node and also to each of its neighbors with probability $p$. The resulting network is sparse for $p<\frac{1}{2}$ and dense (average degree increasing with number of nodes $N$) for $p\geq \frac{1}{2}$. In the dense regime, individual networks realizations built by this copying mechanism are disparate and not self-averaging. Further, there is an infinite sequence of structural anomalies at $p=\frac{2}{3}$, $\frac{3}{4}$, $\frac{4}{5}$, etc., where the dependences on $N$ of the number of triangles (3-cliques), 4-cliques, undergo phase transitions.
