The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission will perform soil moisture content and freeze/thaw state observations from a low-Earth orbit. The observatory is scheduled to launch in October 2014 and will perform observations from a near-polar, frozen, and sun-synchronous Science Orbit for a 3-year data collection mission. At launch, the observatory is delivered to an Injection Orbit that is biased below the Science Orbit; the spacecraft will maneuver to the Science Orbit during the mission Commissioning Phase. The delta V needed to maneuver from the Injection Orbit to the Science Orbit is computed statistically via a Monte Carlo simulation; the 99th percentile delta V (delta V99) is carried as a line item in the mission delta V budget. This paper details the simulation and analysis performed to compute this figure and the delta V99 computed per current mission parameters.

On May 25, 2008, the Mars Phoenix Lander (PHX) successfully landed in the northern planes of Mars in order to continue and complement NASA's "follow the water" theme as its predecessor Mars missions, such as Mars Odyssey (ODY) and Mars Exploration Rovers, have done in recent years. Instruments on the lander, through a robotic arm able to deliver soil samples to the deck, will perform in-situ and remote-sensing investigations to characterize the chemistry of materials at the local surface, subsurface, and atmosphere. Lander instruments will also identify the potential history of key indicator elements of significance to the biological potential of Mars, including potential organics within any accessible water ice. Precise trajectory control and targeting were necessary in order to achieve the accurate atmospheric entry conditions required for arriving at the desired landing site. The challenge for the trajectory control maneuver design was to meet or exceed these requirements in the presence of spacecraft limitations as well as other mission constraints. This paper describes the strategies used, including the specialized targeting specifically developed for PHX, in order to design and successfully execute the propulsive maneuvers that delivered the spacecraft to its targeted landing site while satisfying the planetary protection requirements in the presence of flight system constraints.

The Topex/Poseidon ground track maintenance manuever targeting strategy was changed following launch due to the observation of unexpected, and hence, anomalous accelerations.

GTARG is a computer program used to design orbit maintenance maneuvers for the TOPEX/Poseidon satellite. These maneuvers ensure that the ground track is kept within +/-1 km with of an = 9.9 day exact repeat pattern. Maneuver parameters are determined using either of two targeting strategies: longitude targeting, which maximizes the time between maneuvers, and time targeting, in which maneuvers are targeted to occur at specific intervals. The GTARG algorithm propagates nonsingular mean elements, taking into account anticipated error sigma's in orbit determination, Delta v execution, drag prediction and Delta v quantization. A satellite unique drag model is used which incorporates an approximate mean orbital Jacchia-Roberts atmosphere and a variable mean area model. Maneuver Delta v magnitudes are targeted to precisely maintain either the unbiased ground track itself, or a comfortable (3 sigma) error envelope about the unbiased ground track.

The current baseline injection orbit for the jointly sponsored NASA/CNES TOPEX/Poseidon mission is near-circular, approximately 30 km below the desired operational orbit altitude and at the operational orbit inclination. A baseline maneuver sequence to retarget from this injection orbit to the desired operational orbit has been designed based upon the expected worst-case 3-sigma injection and maneuver execution errors. The sequence requires seven maneuvers, including an initial calibration burn, and achieves the operational orbit with the desired ground track pattern in 30 days. A delay sensitivity analysis has been conducted to estimate the allowable operational delay for each maneuver without increasing the total orbit acquisition period. The baseline sequence provides back-ups for a one-revolution delay for each maneuver and one-day delay for most maneuvers. It is also shown that a higher injection orbit allows the maneuver sequence to achieve the operational orbit in 26 days under a worst-case scenario.

Deep Space navigation with noncoherent (one-way) data types is demonstrated for the VEGA Venus flyby phase under extreme conditions. Estimates and statistics are computed using one-way Doppler and wideband Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) data. The behavior of the onboard oscillator is modeled for both spacecraft to obtain useful orbit determination results. Even with this limitation, it is demonstrated that one-way data solutions are comparable with the solutions using both Soviet sparse coherent (two-way) and wideband VLBI data. During the useful life time of VEGA balloons, the two solutions differ by a maximum of 4.7 km in position and 7.6 cm/sec in velocity for VEGA 1 and by a maximum of 8 km and 42 cm/sec for VEGA 2.

The problem of connecting the independent reference frames formed by the planetary ephemeris and the radio source catalog is one of growing importance to spacecraft navigation. Using quasar-relative VLBI delay data collected by the Deep Space Network, and Soviet coherent data from the Venus flyby of the Soviet Vega 1 and 2 spacecraft, a self-consistent estimate of the frame tie offset has been found, along with its uncertainty.
