Abstract

The prevalence of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is increasing in India. The group of people with the greatest infection rate is prostitutes, who spread the virus to others through heterosexual relationships. Blood from both paid and unpaid donors in Delhi, India was screened for contamination with HIV. The screening was done using a test for the presence of antibodies against HIV. None of 8,000 unpaid donors were infected with HIV, but four out of 1,700 (0.23 percent) of the paid donors were infected. The presence of HIV in the blood of the four antibody-positive individuals was confirmed by Western blot analysis, in which proteins of the virus were detected. This study indicates that HIV infection is present in the group of individuals who are paid for donating blood in India. It is thought that the paid donors probably acquired their infection from prostitutes. Blood that is donated must be screened for the presence of HIV before use. The government of India has already begun screening every unit of donated blood in the major cities in India. Abstract

The Q-system for rock mass classification is being updated, and an improved Q-support chart with details of reinforced ribs of sprayed concrete (RRS) in very poor to exceptionally poor rock mass is presented. In extremely poor rock where some deformation is likely, the toughness and energy absorption of the sprayed concrete has been taken into consideration. In fair and good rock mass quality, increased safety by increased application of sprayed concrete has been observed in recent years. Analytical research has been carried out on the thickness, spacing and reinforcement of RRS as a function of the load from the rock and the rock mass quality. Abstract

The NGI tunnelling index has been used to determine whether Sellafield would be a suitable location for a deep radioactive waste repository. Rock mechanical laboratory testing was carried out along with coupled shear flow testing on natural rock joints to obtain the magnitude of joint conducting apertures. The objective was to produce site-specific data so that the effects of normal and shear stress changes, closure and shearing, could be evaluated and compared with the patterns of behaviour predicted by numerical modelling of the disturbed zone which would be caused by cavern excavation. Preliminary rock reinforcement designs for the disposal caverns were derived from the Q-system statistics. Abstract

Occurrence of unilateral mandibular discontinuity, resulting due to trauma or surgery leads to mandibular deviation towards the defect side causing loss of occlusion on the unaffected side. Mandibular discontinuity leads to loss of balance and symmetry of mandibular function leading to altered mandibular movements. Mandibular deviation of unresected side due to involuntary action of contralateral musculature, particularly the medialpterygoid muscle and contraction of the cicatricial tissue on the resected side. Choice of surgical treatment modality depends on location and extent of tumours, various approaches can be Marginal, Segmental, Hemi-, Subtotal, or Total mandibulectomy. A definitive prosthesis can be given only after completion of healing process and acceptance of the osseous graft. Prosthodontic intervention is an important requirement for preventing the mandibular deviation during the initial healing period. The present case report describes early prosthodontic rehabilitation of a right side hemi-mandibulectomy patient with mandibular guide flange prosthesis. 42. Evidence in vivo for autogenous control of the cyclic AMP receptor protein gene (crp) in Escherichia coli by divergent RNA

Abstract

Control of crp expression in vivo was studied by using the cloned crp gene. The synthesis of the product of this gene, cyclic AMP (cAMP) receptor protein (CRP), was strongly reduced by exogenous cAMP. This regulation was completely abolished by the inactivation of a divergent promoter located within the crp promoter region. These data are consistent with our in vitro studies (Okamoto and Freundlich, Proc.Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 83:5000-5004, 1986), which showed that crp autoregulation is due to the inhibition of crp transcription by divergent (antisense) RNA produced by cAMP-CRP activation of the divergent promoter.

A second update of the Q-system for rock mass qualification is introduced. Emphasis is placed on the application of fibre-reinforced sprayed concrete even for the lowest rock-mass qualities, and on recent changes in rock support practice and material properties. Energy absorption in poor rock is discussed, convergence compared for cast and sprayed concrete linings, deformation calculated in relation to thickness and maximum load for 5, 10 and 20 m spans, and the number of reinforcement bars per rib analysed.
