We introduce CHARTOM, a visual theory-of-mind benchmark for multimodal large language models. CHARTOM consists of specially designed data visualizing charts. Given a chart, a language model needs to not only correctly comprehend the chart (the FACT question) but also judge if the chart will be misleading to a human reader (the MIND question). Both questions have significant societal benefits. We detail the construction of the CHARTOM benchmark including its calibration on human performance.

The existence of superconductivity (SC) in graphene appears to be established in both twisted and non-twisted multilayers. However, whether their building block, single-layer graphene (SLG), can also host SC remains an open question. Earlier theoretical works predicted that SLG could become a chiral d-wave superconductor driven by electronic interactions when doped to its van Hove singularity, but questions such as whether the d-wave SC survives the strong band renormalizations seen in experiments, its robustness against the source of doping, or if it will occur at any reasonable critical temperature (Tc) have remained difficult to answer, in part due to uncertainties in model parameters. In this study, we adopt a random-phase approximation framework based on a Kohn-Luttinger-like mechanism to investigate SC in heavily-doped SLG. We predict that robust d+id topological SC could arise in SLG doped by Tb, with a Tc up to 600 mK. We also investigate the possibility of realizing d-wave SC by employing other dopants, such as Li or Cs. The structural models have been derived from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on Tb-doped graphene and first-principles calculations for Cs and Li doping. We find that dopants that change the lattice symmetry of SLG are detrimental to the d-wave state. The stability of the d-wave SC predicted here in Tb-doped SLG could provide a valuable insight for guiding future experimental efforts aimed at exploring topological superconductivity in monolayer graphene., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. Pseudorandom states (PRSs) are state ensembles that cannot be distinguished from Haar random states by any efficient quantum algorithm. However, the definition of PRSs has been limited to pure states and lacks robustness against noise. In this work, we introduce pseudorandom density matrices (PRDMs), ensembles of $n$-qubit states that are computationally indistinguishable from the generalized Hilbert-Schmidt ensemble, which is constructed from $(n+m)$-qubit Haar random states with $m$ qubits traced out. For a mixedness parameter $m=0$, PRDMs are equivalent to PRSs, whereas for $m=\omega(\log n)$, PRDMs are computationally indistinguishable from the maximally mixed state. In contrast to PRSs, PRDMs with $m=\omega(\log n)$ are robust to unital noise channels and a recently introduced $\mathsf{PostBQP}$ attack. Further, we construct pseudomagic and pseudocoherent state ensembles, which possess near-maximal magic and coherence, but are computationally indistinguishable from states with zero magic and coherence. PRDMs can exhibit a pseudoresource gap of $\Theta(n)$ vs $0$, surpassing previously found gaps. We introduce noise-robust EFI pairs, which are state ensembles that are computationally indistinguishable yet statistically far, even when subject to noise. We show that testing entanglement, magic and coherence is not efficient. Further, we prove that black-box resource distillation requires a superpolynomial number of copies. We also establish lower bounds on the purity needed for efficient testing and black-box distillation. Finally, we introduce memoryless PRSs, a noise-robust notion of PRS which are indistinguishable to Haar random states for efficient algorithms without quantum memory. Our work provides a comprehensive framework of pseudorandomness for mixed states, which yields powerful quantum cryptographic primitives and fundamental bounds on quantum resource theories., Comment: 34 pages, 2 figures

Soft lubrication has been shown to drastically affect the mobility of an object immersed in a viscous fluid in the vicinity of a purely elastic wall. In this theoretical study, we develop a minimal model incorporating viscoelasticity, carrying out a perturbation analysis in both the elastic deformation of the wall and its viscous damping. Our approach reveals the singular-perturbation nature of viscoelasticity to soft lubrication. Numerical resolution of the resulting non-linear, singular and coupled equations of motion reveals peculiar effects of viscoelasticity on confined colloidal mobility, opening the way towards the description of complex migration scenarios near realistic polymeric substrates and biological membranes.

Quantum error correction suppresses noise in quantum systems to allow for high-precision computations. In this work, we introduce Multivariate Bicycle (MB) Quantum Low-Density Parity-Check (QLDPC) codes, via an extension of the framework developed by Bravyi et al. [Nature, 627, 778-782 (2024)] and particularly focus on Trivariate Bicycle (TB) codes. Unlike the weight-6 codes proposed in their study, we offer concrete examples of weight-4 and weight-5 TB-QLDPC codes which promise to be more amenable to near-term experimental setups. We show that our TB-QLDPC codes up to weight-6 have a bi-planar structure. Further, most of our new codes can also be arranged in a two-dimensional toric layout, and have substantially better encoding rates than comparable surface codes while offering similar error suppression capabilities. For example, we can encode 4 logical qubits with distance 5 into 30 physical qubits with weight-5 check measurements, while a surface code with these parameters requires 100 physical qubits. The high encoding rate and compact layout make our codes highly suitable candidates for near-term hardware implementations, paving the way for a realizable quantum error correction protocol., Comment: 4 + 14 pages, 17 figures

The high luminosity of massive, early-type stars drives strong stellar winds through line scattering of the stars continuum radiation. Their momenta contribute substantially to the dynamics and energetics of the ambient interstellar medium in galaxies. The detailed multi-wavelength study of massive O-type and Wolf-Rayet binaries is essential to explore the hydrodynamics of the shocks formed in the stellar outflows and wind structure. Further, deep analysis of some of the interesting phenomena like particle acceleration and dust formation associated with hot stars winds provides a global view of stellar outflows. In this context, a few massive binaries have been explored using photometric and spectroscopic measurements in different wavebands. Communication is essential for advancing science and technology. Quantum communication, in particular, benefits from the use of catalysts. During the communication process, these catalysts enhance performance while remaining unchanged. Although chemical catalysts that undergo deactivation typically perform worse than those that remain unaffected, quantum catalysts, referred to as embezzling catalysts, can surprisingly outperform their non-deactivating counterparts despite experiencing slight alterations. In this work, we employ embezzling quantum catalysts to enhance the transmission of both quantum and classical information. Our results reveal that using embezzling catalysts augments the efficiency of information transmission across noisy quantum channels, ensuring a non-zero catalytic channel capacity. Furthermore, we introduce catalytic superdense coding, demonstrating how embezzling catalysts can enhance the transmission of classical information. Finally, we explore methods to reduce the dimensionality of catalysts, a step toward making quantum catalysis a practical reality., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. Comments welcome!

Quantum teleportation is the process of transferring quantum information using classical communication and pre-shared entanglement. This process can benefit from the use of catalysts, which are ancillary entangled states that can enhance teleportation without being consumed. While chemical catalysts undergoing deactivation invariably exhibit inferior performance compared to those unaffected by deactivation, quantum catalysts, termed embezzling catalysts, that are subject to deactivation, may surprisingly outperform their non-deactivating counterparts. In this work, we present teleportation protocols with embezzling catalyst that can achieve arbitrarily high fidelity, namely the teleported state can be made arbitrarily close to the original state, with finite-dimensional embezzling catalysts. We show that some embezzling catalysts are universal, meaning that they can improve the teleportation fidelity for any pre-shared entanglement. We also explore methods to reduce the dimension of catalysts without increasing catalyst consumption, an essential step towards realizing quantum catalysis in practice., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures. The multiplicity of massive stars is known to be significantly high. Even though the majority of massive stars are located in binary systems, the census of binaries is biased toward shorter periods as longer period systems are more difficult to identify. Alternatively, the search for binary systems with longer periods may proceed differently. As massive binary systems are typically colliding-wind systems, hints for processes occurring in the colliding-wind region could be used as a valuable proxy to identify likely binary systems, and then organize dedicated spectroscopic or interferometric campaigns on a short list of pre-selected targets. In this context, any hint for synchrotron radio emission is seen as a promising indicator of long period binaries, as short period systems undergo severe free-free absorption of the synchrotron emission by the stellar wind material. Usual techniques to identify synchrotron radio emitters constitute thus valid tools to explore that poorly investigated part of the massive binary parameter space. Quantum error-correcting code (QECC) is the central ingredient in fault-tolerant quantum information processing. An emerging paradigm of dynamical QECC shows that one can robustly encode logical quantum information both temporally and spatially in a more resource-efficient manner than traditional QECCs. Nevertheless, an overarching theory of how dynamical QECCs achieve fault-tolerance is lacking. In this work, we bridge this gap by proposing a unified spatio-temporal QECC framework called the ``strategic code'' built around an ``interrogator'' device which sequentially measures and evolves the spatial QECC in an adaptive manner based on the ``quantum combs'' formalism, a generalization of the channel-state duality. The strategic code covers all existing dynamical and static QECC, as well as all physically plausible QECCs to be discovered in the future, including those that involve adaptivity in its operational dynamics. Within this framework, we show an algebraic and an information-theoretic necessary and sufficient error-correction conditions for a strategic code, which consider spatially and temporally correlated errors. These conditions include the analogous known static QECC conditions as a special case. Till now, many path planning algorithms have been proposed in the literature. The objective of these algorithms is to find the quickest path between initial position to the end position in a certain environment. The complexity of these algorithms depends on the internal parameters such as motor speed or sensor range and on other external parameters, including the accuracy of the map, size of the environment, and the number of obstacles. In this paper, we are giving information about how path planning algorithm finds the optimal path in an uneven terrain with a multiple obstacle using TurtleBot3 robot into the Gazebo environment using Dijkstra's and A(star).

Digital quantum computers promise exponential speedups in performing quantum time-evolution, providing an opportunity to simulate quantum dynamics of complex systems in physics and chemistry. However, the task of extracting desired quantum properties at intermediate time steps remains a computational bottleneck due to wavefunction collapse and no-fast-forwarding theorem. Despite significant progress towards building a Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computer (FTQC), there is still a need for resource-efficient quantum simulators. Here, we propose a hybrid simulator that enables classical computers to leverage FTQC devices and quantum time propagators to overcome this bottleneck, so as to efficiently simulate the quantum dynamics of large systems initialized in an unknown superposition of a few system eigenstates. Bell non-locality is a fundamental feature of quantum mechanics whereby measurements performed on "spatially separated" quantum systems can exhibit correlations that cannot be understood as revealing predetermined values. This is a special case of the more general phenomenon of "quantum contextuality", which says that such correlations can occur even when the measurements are not necessarily on separate quantum systems, but are merely "compatible" (i.e. commuting). Crucially, while any non-local game yields an experiment that demonstrates quantum advantage by leveraging the "spatial separation" of two or more devices (and in fact several such demonstrations have been conducted successfully in recent years), the same is not true for quantum contextuality: finding the contextuality analogue of such an experiment is arguably one of the central open questions in the foundations of quantum mechanics. In this work, we show that an arbitrary contextuality game can be compiled into an operational "test of contextuality" involving a single quantum device, by only making the assumption that the device is computationally bounded. Our work is inspired by the recent work of Kalai et al. (STOC '23) that converts any non-local game into a classical test of quantum advantage with a single device. The central idea in their work is to use cryptography to enforce spatial separation within subsystems of a single quantum device. Our work can be seen as using cryptography to enforce "temporal separation", i.e. to restrict communication between sequential measurements. Recent advancements in deep learning have demonstrated remarkable performance comparable to human capabilities across various supervised computer vision tasks. However, the prevalent assumption of having an extensive pool of training data encompassing all classes prior to model training often diverges from real-world scenarios, where limited data availability for novel classes is the norm. The challenge emerges in seamlessly integrating new classes with few samples into the training data, demanding the model to adeptly accommodate these additions without compromising its performance on base classes. To address this exigency, the research community has introduced several solutions under the realm of few-shot class incremental learning (FSCIL). In this study, we introduce an innovative FSCIL framework that utilizes language regularizer and subspace regularizer. During base training, the language regularizer helps incorporate semantic information extracted from a Vision-Language model. The subspace regularizer helps in facilitating the model's acquisition of nuanced connections between image and text semantics inherent to base classes during incremental training. Our proposed framework not only empowers the model to embrace novel classes with limited data, but also ensures the preservation of performance on base classes. To substantiate the efficacy of our approach, we conduct comprehensive experiments on three distinct FSCIL benchmarks, where our framework attains state-of-the-art performance.

In recent years, several experimental groups have claimed demonstrations of ``quantum supremacy'' or computational quantum advantage. A notable first claim by Google Quantum AI revolves around a metric called the Linear Cross Entropy Benchmarking (Linear XEB), which has been used in multiple quantum supremacy experiments since. The complexity-theoretic hardness of spoofing Linear XEB has nevertheless been doubtful due to its dependence on the Cross-Entropy Quantum Threshold (XQUATH) conjecture put forth by Aaronson and Gunn, which has been disproven for sublinear depth circuits. In efforts on demonstrating quantum supremacy by quantum Hamiltonian simulation, a similar benchmarking metric called the System Linear Cross Entropy Score (sXES) holds firm in light of the aforementioned negative result due to its fundamental distinction with Linear XEB. Moreover, the hardness of spoofing sXES complexity-theoretically rests on the System Linear Cross-Entropy Quantum Threshold Assumption (sXQUATH), the formal relationship of which to XQUATH is unclear. Despite the promises that sXES offers for future demonstration of quantum supremacy, in this work we show that it is an unsound benchmarking metric. Particularly, we prove that sXQUATH does not hold for sublinear depth circuits and present a classical algorithm that spoofs sXES for experiments corrupted with noise larger than certain threshold., Comment: 19 pages, 1 figure

Following up on a recent paper [Bharti et al., Phys. Rev. A 109 (2024) 023110], we compare the predictions from severalR-matrix with time-dependence calculations for a modified three-sideband version of the "reconstruction of attosecond beating by interference of two-photon transitions" (RABBITT) configuration applied to helium. Except for the special case of the threshold sideband, which appears to be very sensitive to the details of coupling to the bound Rydberg states, increasing the number of coupled states in the close-coupling expansion used to describe the ejected-electron--residual-ion interaction hardly changes the results. Consequently, the remaining discrepancies between the experimental data and the theoretical predictions are likely due to uncertainties in the experimental parameters, particularly the detailed knowledge of the laser pulse.

Massive star winds are known to be responsible for X-ray emission arising from wind plasma heated by the strong shocks up to the temperature of 10$^6$--10$^7$ K in case of colliding wind binaries. We have investigated thermal and non-thermal X-ray emission from the massive O-type star HD93250 to unveil its binary orbital parameters independently. To meet our goal, X-ray data obtained with XMM-Newton has been analyzed, spanning over $\sim$19 years. Additionally, we analyzed NuSTAR observations of HD93250 taken at various epochs. We determined the variability time-scale of the X-ray emission to be 193.8$\pm$1.3\,d, in full agreement with the 194.3$\pm$0.4\,d period derived from the astrometric orbit. The X-ray spectrum of HD93250 is well explained by a three-temperature thermal plasma emission model with temperatures of 0.26, 1.0, and 3.3 keV. The resulting X-ray flux varies in compliance with the typical colliding wind emission from eccentric massive binaries where it enhances near periastron passage and decreases gradually close to apastron, proportionally with the inverse of the binary separation. The periastron-to-apastron X-ray emission ratio points to an eccentricity range of 0.20-0.25, once again in agreement with the previously determined astrometric orbit. Finally, we did not detect any hard X-ray emission attributable to non-thermal emission above 10 keV. Given the derived plasma temperature, the strong phase-locked variability and the significant over-luminosity in X-rays, we establish that the X-ray emission from HD93250 is dominated by the colliding-wind region. Our results lend support to the idea that X-ray time analysis of massive stars constitutes a relevant tool to investigate their multiplicity and extract relevant information on their basic orbital parameters, such as the period and the eccentricity, independently of any orbital solution derived from usual techniques., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

To add to the rapidly progressing field of ultrafast photocurrent, we propose a universal method to generate photocurrent in normal and topological materials using a pair of multicycle linearly polarized laser pulses. The interplay of the fundamental and its second harmonic pulses is studied for the generation of photocurrent in Weyl semimetals by varying the angle between the polarization direction, relative intensity, and relative phase delay. It has been found that the presence of a comparatively weaker second harmonic pulse is sufficient to generate substantial photocurrent. Moreover, significant photocurrent is generated even when polarization directions are orthogonal for certain ratios of the lasers' intensities. In addition, the photocurrent is found to be susceptible to the delay between the two pulses. We have illustrated that all our findings are extendable to non-topological and two-dimensional materials, such as graphene and molybdenum disulfide., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

In this study, the role of solvent viscosity ratio ($\beta$) on the creeping flow characteristics of Oldroyd-B fluid over a channel-confined circular cylinder has been explored numerically. The hydrodynamic model equations have been solved by RheoTool, an open-source toolbox based on OpenFOAM, employing the finite volume method for extensive ranges of Deborah number ($De = 0.025-1.5$) and solvent viscosity ratio ($\beta = 0.1-0.9$) for the fixed wall blockage ($B = 0.5$). The present investigation has undergone extensive validation, with available literature under specific limited conditions, before obtaining detailed results for the relevant flow phenomena such as streamline, pressure and stress contour profiles, pressure coefficient ($C_p$), wall shear stress ($\tau_w$), normal stress ($\tau_{xx}$), first normal stress difference ($N_{1}$), and drag coefficient ($C_{\text{D}}$).The flow profiles have exhibited a distinctive behavior characterized by a loss of symmetry in the presence of pronounced viscoelastic and polymeric effects. The results for low $De$ notably align closely with those for Newtonian fluids, and the drag coefficient ($C_D$) remains relatively constant regardless of $\beta$, as the viscoelastic influence is somewhat subdued. As $De$ increases, the influence of viscoelasticity becomes more pronounced, while a decrease in $\beta$ leads to an escalation in polymeric effects; an increase in the $C_D$ value is observed as $\beta$ increases. This study presents a simulated quantum computing approach for the investigation into the shell-model energy levels of $^{58}$Ni through the application of the variational eigensolver (VQE) method in combination with a problem-specific ansatz. The primary objective is to achieve a fully accurate low-lying energy spectrum of $^{58}$Ni. The chosen isotope, $^{58}$Ni is particularly interesting in nuclear physics through its role in astrophysical reactions while also being a simple but not-trivial nucleus for shell-model study, it being two particles outside a closed shell. Our ansatz, along with the VQE method are shown to be able to reproduce exact energy values for the ground state and first and second excited states. We compare a classical shell model code, the values obtained by diagonalization of the Hamiltonian after qubit mapping, and a noiseless simulated ansatz+VQE simulation. The exact agreement between classical and qubit-mapped diagonalisation shows the correctness of our method, and the high accuracy of the simulation means that the ansatz is suitable to allow a full reconstruction of the full nuclear wave function.

We study the Plateau-Rayleigh instability of a viscoelastic soft solid layer coated on a rigid cylinder i.e., a soft fibre with a rigid core. The onset of instability is examined using a linear stability analysis. We find that increasing the rigid cylinder radius reduce the growth rate of the fastest growing mode. For each rigid cylinder radius, a critical elastocapillary number is found below which all wavelengths of disturbances are stable. The critical value for a soft fibre with a thick rigid cylindrical core can be several orders of magnitudes larger than that for a totally soft fibre (no rigid core), which highlights the strong stabilizing effect of the rigid core on the system. Increasing the relaxation timescale of the viscoelastic material also slows down the growth of disturbance, but has no effect on the critical elastocapillary number. Interestingly, the wavelength of the fastest growing mode is independent of the rigid cylinder radius for the purely elastic case.

We upper- and lower-bound the optimal precision with which one can estimate an unknown Hamiltonian parameter via measurements of Gibbs thermal states with a known temperature. The bounds depend on the uncertainty in the Hamiltonian term that contains the parameter and on the term's degree of noncommutativity with the full Hamiltonian: higher uncertainty and commuting operators lead to better precision. We apply the bounds to show that there exist entangled thermal states such that the parameter can be estimated with an error that decreases faster than $1/\sqrt{n}$, beating the standard quantum limit. This result governs Hamiltonians where an unknown scalar parameter (e.g. a component of a magnetic field) is coupled locally and identically to $n$ qubit sensors. In the high-temperature regime, our bounds allow for pinpointing the optimal estimation error, up to a constant prefactor. Our bounds generalize to joint estimations of multiple parameters. In this setting, we recover the high-temperature sample scaling derived previously via techniques based on quantum state discrimination and coding theory.
