Abstract

The Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) small explorer spacecraft provides simultaneous spectra and images of the photosphere, chromosphere, transition region, and corona with 0.33-0.4 arcsec spatial resolution, 2 s temporal resolution and 1 km/s velocity resolution over a field-of-view of up to 175 arcsec x 175 arcsec. IRIS was launched into a Sun-synchronous orbit on 27 June 2013 using a Pegasus-XL rocket and consists of a 19-cm UV telescope that feeds a slit-based dual-bandpass imaging spectrograph. IRIS obtains spectra in passbands from 1332-1358, 1389-1407 and 2783-2834 Angstrom including bright spectral lines formed in the chromosphere (Mg II h 2803 Angstrom and Mg II k 2796 Angstrom) and transition region (C II 1334/1335 Angstrom and Si IV 1394/1403 Angstrom). Slit-jaw images in four different passbands (C II 1330, Si IV 1400, Mg II k 2796 and Mg II wing 2830 Angstrom) can be taken simultaneously with spectral rasters that sample regions up to 130 arcsec x 175 arcsec at a variety of spatial samplings (from 0.33 arcsec and up). IRIS is sensitive to emission from plasma at temperatures between 5000 K and 10 MK and will advance our understanding of the flow of mass and energy through an interface region, formed by the chromosphere and transition region, between the photosphere and corona. This highly structured and dynamic region not only acts as the conduit of all mass and energy feeding into the corona and solar wind, it also requires an order of magnitude more energy to heat than the corona and solar wind combined. The IRIS investigation includes a strong numerical modeling component based on advanced radiative-MHD codes to facilitate interpretation of observations of this complex region. Abstract

The star-pattern recognition algorithm presented allows the advanced Full-sky Autonomous Star Tracker (FAST) device, such as the projected ASTROS II system of the Mariner Mark II planetary spacecraft, to reliably ascertain attitude about all three axes. An ASTROS II-based FAST, possessing an 11.5 x 11.5 deg field of view and 8-arcsec accuracy, can when integrated with an all-sky data base of 4100 guide stars determine its attitude in about 1 sec, with a success rate close to 100 percent. The present recognition algorithm can also be used for automating the acquisition of celestial targets by astronomy telescopes, autonomously updating the attitude of gyro-based attitude control systems, and automating ground-based attitude reconstruction.

19. Intelligibility of standard german and low german to speakers of dutch

Abstract

This paper reports on the intelligibility of spoken Low German and Standard German for speakers of Dutch. Two aspects are considered. First, the relative potential for intelligibility of the Low German variety of Bremen and the High German variety of Modern Standard German for speakers of Dutch is tested. Second, the question is raised whether Low German is understood more easily by subjects from the Dutch-German border area than subjects from other areas of the Netherlands. This is investigated empirically. The results show that in general Dutch people are better at understanding Standard German than the Low German variety, but that subjects from the border area are better at understanding Low German than subjects from other parts of the country. A larger amount of previous experience with the German standard variety than with Low German dialects could explain the first result, while proximity on the sound level could explain the second result., Este artículo informa sobre el grado de inteligibilidad del bajo alemán hablado y del estándar alemán que tienen los hablantes del holandés. Se han considerado dos aspectos: en primer lugar, el potencial relativo de inteligibilidad de la variedad del bajo alemán de Bremen y de la variedad del alto alemán correspondiente al moderno estándar por parte de hablantes del holandés; en segundo lugar, se cuestiona si los sujetos que habitan en la frontera holandesa-alemana entienden con más facilidad el bajo alemán que los habitantes de otras áreas de los Países Bajos. Esta cuestión se ha investigado empíricamente. Los resultados muestran que en general los holandeses entienden mejor el estándar alemán que el bajo alemán, pero que los hablantes de la frontera entienden mejor el bajo alemán que el resto de hablantes del holandés. El hecho que exista una mayor experiencia previa de la variedad correspondiente al alemán estándar que del bajo alemán explicaría el primer resultado mientras que la proximidad relativa al fónico explicaría el segundo resultado

Abstract

Intonation has meaning (cf. Ladd 1996:39). For example, in many languages it is possible to change a statement into a question by executing a pitch rise at the end of the utterance (Bolinger 1978, 1989). In fact, form categories postulated in intonation models are largely based on (supposed) similarities and differences in the meanings expressed by the various melodic shapes. Furthermore, there are a number of (theoretical) analyses of the meaning of intonation available (e.g. Brazil, Coulthard and Johns 1980, Ladd 1980, Gussenhoven 1984, Bolinger 19 86, 1989, Pierrehumbert and Hirschberg 1990, all for English). It seems logical to try and verify available hypotheses about the meaning of melodic shapes in an experimental way. So far, however, experimental support backing the postulated meanings attributed to the various intonational form categories has never been provided. One important reason for this conspicuous lack of independent empirical support is that it is extremely difficult to test meaning hypotheses of non-lexical categories experimentally (cf. Kirsner, van Heuven and van Bezooijen 1994). According to some experts the job just cannot be done (Cutler 1977). The present investigation is a continuation of earlier work on the meaning of intonation (Caspers 1997, 1998a, 1998b), focusing on two Dutch melodic shapes: the default pitch accent or 'pointed hat' ('l&A') and the accent-lending fall ('A').
