A Benchmark of railway multibody dynamics software application to switches and crossings (S&C) is presented, comparing all major commercially available software and a few independent codes. Two different representative S&C have been implemented, using the Manchester Benchmark passenger vehicle. The final results show that all software offer a reliable and efficient way to understand the kinematic and dynamics forces between the wheels and the track elements. The highest challenges are found when modelling a combination of multiple rails in simultaneous contact with a wheel (check-stock or switch-stock), large longitudinal variations in rail shape (crossings) and high lateral steering forces (diverging cases in tight radius). In those cases, the codes able to account for the exact relative motion of each wheels with respect to each rails independently are the most apt. The most significant variations between software are found in the contact prediction with an influence on the detailed contact tangential and normal forces. The user variability is found to be very small, with the most time-consuming and error prone being the task of handling the input data for the variable rails definition. Vehicle-track interaction in a switch panel diverging route is studied with a focus on the way its components may interact in the lateral direction. Taking one of the cases of S&C benchmark as the base model, several variants of the co-running track model are considered. In the first series of simulation, the effect of the lateral separation of the switch rail and stock rail is investigated, showing that only small differences are found in terms of wheel/rail forces between a track model where both rails are coupled, and one where they are free to move with respect to one another. Only transient effects are visible at the beginning and at the end of the two-point contact on both rails. While small, these differences can have some influence in terms of rolling contact fatigue and wear prediction. In the second series of simulation, co-running track models are developed including the baseplate and taking into account such effects as switch rail/stock rail contact at the undercut plane and dry friction. Significant changes are observed in the load distribution within the switch panel. Conclusions should be consolidated through experimental field measurement and using more realistic track models, e.g. discretely supported rail beam models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes a methodology developed to systematically pre-process rail profile data from switches and crossings for railway vehicle dynamics simulation. The methodology accepts two data sources, unworn geometries from CAD drawings or worn geometries from digitised track measurements. The method addresses key challenges with the relative positioning and quality improvement of the input data and explains the necessary steps to ensure compatibility with the interpolation schemes used to represent the rail profile in certain multibody software. The case studies presented show how small misalignments in the processed digitised measurements affect simulation results and how simulations can help understand the qualitative evolution of switches and crossings rail profiles in a used track. This paper concludes that one of the most challenging tasks remains the automation of rail pre-processing for measured data because it is difficult to correct vertical and lateral misalignments of the profile cross-sections without a reference system. The development and implementation of wheel-rail contact models in multibody codes are two active research topics, aiming at improving the accuracy of numerical results and computational efficiency of the dynamics analysis. However, the realism of numerical results is challenged when considering switches and crossings (S&C), where the most adverse wheel-rail contact conditions occur. This paper presents a benchmark study where the performance of the multibody codes MUBODyn, VOCO and VI-Rail are assessed using three case scenarios that involve typical contact conditions observed in S&C. A focused description of the relevant methods to determine the wheel-rail contact forces is presented for each software. The three scenarios considered in this work have been designed to represent typical challenging contact conditions observed in S&C, i.e. conformal contact, contact with a sharp edge, and impact loads. The scenarios proposed in this work are fully described, making them easily reproducible. The agreement between results is discussed in the framework of the methods implemented in each code. Repoint is an alternative concept for the design of track switches developed at Loughborough University. The concept, based around a stub switch, offers several improvements over current designs. Through a novel locking arrangement, it allows parallel, multi-channel actuation and passive locking functions, providing a high degree of fault tolerance. The aim of the work presented in this paper is to evaluate the dynamic interaction forces due to the passage of rolling stock over the switch and, particularly, the area of the stub rail ends, in comparison to a conventional switch. Specific behaviour and load transfer conditions from one rail to the other at the joint are analysed, as well as long-term wear conditions of the rails. These evaluations are undertaken by means of multi-body dynamic simulations, leading to design refinement of the stub rail ends and the identification of further research and development requirements in their design. With rapid advances in sensor and condition monitoring technologies, railway infrastructure managers are turning their attention towards the promise that digital information and big data will help them understand and manage their assets more efficiently. In addition to the existing track geometry records, it is evident that track stiffness is a key physical quantity to help assess track quality and its long-term deterioration. The present paper analyses the role of track stiffness and its spatial variability through a set of computational experiments, varying other vehicle and track physical quantities such as vehicle unsprung mass, speed and track vertical irregularities. The support stiffness conditions are obtained using a sample procedure from an autoregressive integrated moving average model to generate a representative larger set of data from previously on-site measured data. A set of computational experiments is carefully designed, varying different physical variables, and a vehicle–track interaction model is used to estimate the track geometry deterioration rates. A series of log-linear regression models are then used to analyse the impact of the tested physical variables on the track deterioration. The main findings suggest that the spatial variability of track stiffness significantly contributes to the track deterioration rates, and thus it should be used in the future to better target the design and maintenance of railway track. Finally, a comparative study of some settlement models available in literature shows that they are very dependent on the test conditions under which they have been derived. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
