Inledning Traditionell årlig budgetering har länge varit ett välanvänt och pålitligt styrmedel inom verksamhetsstyrning. Under de senaste fem åren har marknadsklimatet förändrats med ökade omvärldsrelaterade osäkerhetsfaktorer som konsekvens av krig och inflation. Förändringar gällande förutsättningarna på elmarknaden har också påverkat företagen inom elbranschen. Under flera decennier har kritik framförts i tidigare forskning mot den traditionella budgeteringen när det gäller dess lämplighet i osäkra föränderliga miljöer. Kritiken blir åter aktuell då det kan krävas kompletteringar av alternativa styrverktyg för att lyckas navigera verksamheten i osäkra marknadsmiljöer. Även de alternativa styrmedlen har sina utmaningar när det kommer till att framgångsrikt implementera och komplettera den traditionella budgeteringen. Det finns även förespråkare som hävdar att den traditionella budgeteringen helt bör ersättas med mer flexibla och dynamiska styrmedel. Syfte Syftet med vår studie är att undersöka hur de senaste fem årens ökade osäkerhetsfaktorer har påverkat budgeteringens roll inom verksamhetsstyrningen. Specifikt hur företag som verkar på elmarknaden har anpassat eller kompletterat budgeteringen med flexibla styrverktyg. Metod Vår studie har genomförts med en kvantitativ undersökningsmetod. Datainsamlingen har genomförts med en internetbaserad enkät. Företagen inom elbranschen har valts ut genom ett slumpmässigt urval. Studien har genomförts med en deduktiv ansats. Resultat och slutsats Företagen inom elbranschen har under de senaste fem åren i hög grad påverkats av ökade osäkerhetsfaktorer. Planering av verksamheten har försvårats och behovet av riskanalyser har ökat.Trots detta är den traditionella budgeteringen fortsatt av väsentlig vikt i styrmixen då majoriteten inte har gjort eller planerar att göra förändringar i sitt sätt att arbeta med traditionell budgetering.Övergivning av styrmedlet är inte enväldigt relaterat till dess brister, utan organisatoriska hin, Introduction Traditional budgeting has long been a reliable and frequently used management control tool. War and inflation have caused a rise in external uncertainties resulting in the market climate changing over the last five years. Changes surrounding the electricity market have also impacted companies within the industry. Over several decades critique has been presented against the traditional budgeting regarding its suitability in uncertain and changing environments. Critique has been rekindled since companies now require alternative tools to be able to navigate their organisations in uncertain market environments. Even the alternative tools have their challenges regarding successful implementation and their ability to complement the traditional budgeting.There are also advocates who argue that more flexible and dynamic tools should replace traditional budgeting altogether. Aim The aim of our study is to investigate how the external uncertainties over the last five years have impacted the role of budgeting within management control. Specifically, how companies who operate in the electricity industry have adjusted or complemented budgeting with flexible tools. Method Our study has been carried out using a quantitative survey method. The data has been collected using an online survey. Companies within the electricity industry have been randomly selected to participate. This study has been completed using a deductive approach. Results and conclusion Companies within the electricity industry have been largely impacted by external uncertainties over the last five years. Det finns forskning som säger att under en kris gynnas organisationer av att använda det mer traditionella budgetsystemet och forskning som menar att den budgetlösa metoden är att föredra. Det här undersöks genom att se hur sex stycken principer av beyond budgeting används inom företaget Ahlsell Sverige AB. Syftet med arbetet är således att öka förståelsen för hur Ahlsell styr sin verksamhet, hur de använder principerna och se hur det påverkades under coronapandemin. Har krisen medfört att företaget agerade på ett sätt som är mindre i linje med beyond budgeting? Med det ovan nämnda har en fallstudie varit grunden i forskningsdesignen och metoden. Där en kvalitativ forskning med en induktiv ansats har följts för att sedan utföra semistrukturerade intervjuer hos ett antal respondenter inom företaget. I och med intervjuerna har målbilden varit att få ut nyanserad och djupgående information. Baserat på den insamlade empiriska datan samt analysen tillsammans med teorin, har slutsatserna varit att Ahlsell använder sex styrprinciper inom beyond budgeting i olika former. Vissa ligger helt i linje med beyond budgeting men andra ligger mindre i linje med styrprocesserna. Det framkommer i slutsatserna att coronapandemin inte påverkat företaget och styrprocesserna särskilt mycket alls. Ahlsell visade fina siffror och fortsatte att styra budgetlöst i samma riktning utan stora ändringar., There is research that says that during a crisis, organizations benefit by using the more traditional budgeting system and research that means that the beyond budgeting method is to be preferred. The basis of our research is to see how a beyond budgeting company used the six management control principles during the corona pandemic. This is examined by seeing how the six principles of beyond budgeting are used within the company Ahlsell Sverige AB. The purpose of the work is thus to increase understanding of how Ahlsell manages its operations, how they use the principles and see how it was affected during the corona pandemic. Did the crisis result in the company operating in a way that is less in line with beyond budgeting? With the aforementioned, a case study has been the basis of the research design and method. Where qualitative research with an inductive approach has been followed to then carry out semi-structured interviews with a number of respondents within the company. With the interviews, the goal has been to obtain nuanced and in-depth information. Based on the collected empirical data, as well as the analysis together with the theory, the conclusions have been that they use the six principles within beyond budgeting in different forms. Some are completely in line with beyond budgeting principles but others are less in line with beyond budgeting. It appears in the conclusions that the corona pandemic did not affect the company and the management processes very much at all. Ahlsell showed good numbers and continued to use control without a budget in the same direction without major changes.

Bakgrund: Budget är en av de centrala delarna inom ekonomistyrning och är vanligt förekommande i många företag. Trots det finns missnöje med budgeten kring att den är tidskrävande och det är svårt att förutspå framtiden. Inte minst i en så pass snabbt föränderlig och oförutsägbar bransch som transport- och logistikföretag tillhör. Från missnöjet uppkom konceptet med budgetlös styrning, som bygger på prognoser och andra tillvägagångssätt för kontroller. Trots missnöjet använder sig företag fortfarande ofta av ett traditionellt budgetsystem, vilket väcker frågetecken kring varför det är så. Syfte: Uppsatsens syfte baseras på undersökningar om hur budgetarbetet inom transport- och logistikföretag har påverkats av nya omständigheter i omvärlden. Det kommer utredas om det traditionella budgetsystemet numera präglas av icke budgetsystem inom ramarna för budgetlös styrning. Although, there is a lot of dissatisfaction with the process concerning the amount of time it takes and it is difficult to predict the future. Not at least in an industry so rapidly changing and unpredictable as transport and logistics. Based on this dissatisfaction, the concept of beyond budgeting arised. Beyond budgeting focuses more on forecasts and other forms of control. Despite this dissatisfaction, organizations and companies still use the traditional budgeting systems, and the question is why that is. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether budgeting processes in companies in the transport and logistics industry have been affected by new circumstances in the world. It will be investigated if the traditional budgeting systems has been characterized with the beyond budgeting ideas. The results of this study will later on be a base for other companies to learn from and contribute with a new approach for the development of budget. Method: To complete this study we have chosen the use of a qualitative approach with semi structured interviews. Five people with some kind of financial responsibility from five companies of different sizes and geographical distribution have been interviewed with questions about their financial management, with focus on the budget. Conclusion: The conclusion drawn from this study is that many companies use budgets. Some of them have implemented improvements which can be connected to beyond budgeting, but the budget has not been completely abandoned. There is a general dissatisfaction regarding the budget process among the respondents, but the concept beyond budgeting is overlooked, since few of them do not know how it would be involved in practice.

Purpose The purpose of the work is to find out why companies choose to use budget, alternatively beyond budgeting. What is the reason for sticking to traditional budgeting despite the resource consumption it takes in relation to value creation and what is the reason for choosing to deviate from the traditional and move towards a completely or partially beyond budgeting. LimitationsThis study is limited to examining four companies in different industries in order to provide an in-depth analysis of each individual company's conditions and the use of budget or budget-free management. The study is also limited to interviewing a person at each company and thus only provides an insight into how the company views the current control system from a perspective. Method The study is done through a qualitative method. A study of four companies from Småland is conducted using semi-structured interviews to find out how the companies view the use of budget or beyond budgeting. The respondents are a representative from each company with a position as either CFO or CEO. Conclusion The study shows that companies are reluctant to change the management method despite the criticism that exists and which is reflected on several levels in several respondents at the time of the interviews. This is believed to be due to an unwillingness to go from what you have had for a long time and which works, but where you instead change in your existing system to adapt it to the business you have and do the best based on the company's own situation. The budgeting debate concerns that traditional budgets have become dysfunctional in today’s volatile business environment. Thus, it can seem logical that organisations would implement alternatives, and beyond budgeting has become popular. Nevertheless, knowledge of beyond budgeting’s practical implications is limited, and future research needs to study organisations that have implemented beyond budgeting. This study, therefore, investigates beyond budgeting in practice through a qualitative multiple case study with eight semi-structured interviews, whose respondents come from four retail organisations. The study intends to research reasons for choosing beyond budgeting, how the beyond budgeting solution is designed and what consequences beyond budgeting implies. The study finds that organisations choose to implement beyond budgeting for several reasons, some similar, such as budgets being time-consuming and aiming for higher adaptability, and some more organisation specific. The study also finds that the beyond budgeting solutions differ, for example, the companies’ management processes are designed differently. However, no organisation intentionally implemented all beyond budgeting principles, and all have a high focus on the management processes. Further, the study finds that the company's consequences implies some similarities and differences. For example, higher adaptability was a consistent outcome. Moreover, the study shows that all companies experienced consequences that were unanticipated. Lastly, the study implies that an organisation’s contingencies affects reasons, beyond budgeting solution and outcomes as beyond budgeting should be adjusted to its situation.

The budget has for decades been a cornerstone in most organizations management accounting and control. The budget has also faced criticism for being expensive, time-consuming, for quickly becoming obsolete and for impeding flexibility in organisations. In an increasingly dynamic world, companies need to become more adaptive and forward-looking. Researchers believe that budgeting is generally a data-driven activity. Hence, it becomes suitable for application of analytical technologies, such as Business Intelligence (BI). Although BI has been at the top of companies' agendas for a long time, research show that many organizations still struggle to harvest the benefits or reach the expectations with BI-systems. Thus, the purpose of this study has been to analyze and compare how business intelligence can be used for and influence budgeting among Swedish car dealers. To experience several perspectives on how BI affects budgeting in practice the study takes a qualitative approach as seven interviews with individuals at seven different car dealerships was conducted. From the existing body of literature and research, a framework to describe and analyze how BI can be used for budgeting was constructed. The study found that the use of BI for budgeting practice does not reach the potential that the literature and previous research illuminates. The conclusion is based on a minimal gathering of external and unstructured data, the modest use of predictive analysis and the non-existence occurrence of prescriptive analysis. Despite this, BI can still be used for and affect budgeting in several positive remarks. BI can gather and quickly provide a both comprehensive as well as deeply detailed overview of the business. Furthermore, BI seems to enable budget evaluation more frequently and in combination with budget follow-up and control. Something that potentially might mitigate the critique the budget has endured for impeding flexibility. Även om BI varit på toppen av företagens agenda under en lång tid visar forskning att många organisationer fortfarande inte lyckats skörda de fördelar eller uppnå de förväntningar som finns på BI-system. Syftet med denna studie har således varit att analysera och jämföra hur business intelligence kan användas för och påverka budgetering bland svenska bilåterförsäljare. För att erfara olika perspektiv på hur BI påverkar budgetering i praktiken tar studien en kvalitativ ansats. Sju personer intervjuades hos sju olika bilåterförsäljare. Utifrån den existerande litteraturen och forskning utarbetades en analysmodell i syfte att beskriva och analysera hur BI kan användas inom budgetering. Studien fann att användningen av BI i praktiken inte uppnår den potential som forskningen belyser. Slutsatsen grundar sig i en minimal användning av externa och ostrukturerade data. Samt en blygsam användning av prediktiva analyser och total avsaknad av preskriptiva analyser. Trots det kan BI användas för och påverka budgetering positivt i flera bemärkelser. BI kan samla in data och snabbt ge både en överblickande och en detaljerad bild över verksamheten. Vidare möjliggör BI att utvärdering av budgetar kan ske kontinuerligt i kombination med uppföljning. Något som potentiellt kan mildra den kritik budgeten utsått för att förhindra flexibilitet. I en värld påverkad av covid-19 blev den resande världen stillastående, branscher som förlitar sig på resande kunder kom att krascha. Med en kris är det otydligt hur budgeten som är en dominant roll i ekonomistyrning kommer att påverkas. Syftet med studien har varit att se hur hotellbranschens användning av budget har påverkats av krisen och det har gjorts genom att undersöka olika Elite Hotels. För att fånga användningen av budget och om krisen haft en påverkan undersöktes den innan pandemin, under och lite efter, samt också för att belysa likheter och skillnader mellan hotellen. För att svara på studiens syfte har ett teoretiskt ramverk för traditionell budgetering och beyond budgeting använts, även en analysmodell har skapats för att visualisera resultatet. Insamlingen av data har skett genom intervjuer med en semistrukturerad synvinkel som är en del av kvalitativ forskning. Genom analysen av budgetens användning innan, under och lite efter har krisens påverkan på hur budgeten används fångats och förändringen har applicerats på analysmodellen. Innan pandemin genomfördes ett budgetarbete likt den traditionella budgeten hos hotellen som de sedan blev tvungna att sluta med under pandemin. Genom analysen syns det att hotellen har skiftat fokus lite efter pandemin mot ett mer strategiskt arbete och en ökad användning av beyond budgeting styrverktyg har skett vid sidan om den traditionella budgeten de arbetar med. Då endast en hotellkedja har undersökts föreslås att framtida forskning fokuserar på olika hotell och branscher för en bättre överblick av budget i kris.

Adaptiva styrprinciper har framhållits som potentiell lösning till en rad strategiskt kostsamma nackdelar kopplade till den traditionella årsbudgeten. Denna studie syftar till att studerasambandet mellan dessa adaptiva styrprinciper och osäker miljö. Teoribildningen som ligger till grund för det analytiska ramverket har tematiserats i fyra kategorier av adaptiva styrprinciper som visats återkommande i den tidigare forskningen rörande beyond budgeting och dess besläktade hybrider: decentralisering, adaptiv planering och resursallokering, adaptiv målsättning och prestationsmätning samt adaptiva incitamentspraktiker. Denna tidigare forskning har emellertid inte undersökt mindre företags benägenhet att implementera dessa praktiker, och hur detta förhåller sig under perioder av generell osäkerhet. Covid-19-pandemin utgör en unik möjlighet på så sätt att andra typer av osäkerhet tidigare har tagit formen av specifika attribut (exempelvis konkurrensutsättning), medan pandemin får anses vara generellt utan motstycke under de i övrigt rådande omständigheterna. Forskningsfrågan definieras därmed som: Har mindre svenska tillverkningsföretag anammat adaptiva styrprinciper i större utsträckning under pandemin? För att undersöka huruvida dessa styrprinciper har ett samband med osäker miljö på det sätt som antyds utifrån teori användes en kvantitativ metod. En enkät skickades till 616 svenska tillverkningsföretag med 10-199 anställda, varav 88 användbara svar samlades in. Även om respondenterna uppvisade bred tendens till anammande (såsom teorin skulle förutse) var inte denna förändringsgrad under pandemin statistiskt signifikant utifrån linjär sannolikhetsmodell., Adaptive management practices have been touted as being the solution to a number of strategically costly problems connected to the traditional yearly budget. The purpose of this study is to examine the relation between adaptive management practices and an uncertain environment. The underlying theory of the analytical framework specifically concerns four adaptive management practices that have proven to be recurring in the beyond budgeting literature and its adjacent hybrids: decentralization, adaptive planning and resource allocation, adaptive goal and performance measurements and adaptive incentives. Prior research has overlooked the aspect of smaller companies and their willingness to change and adapt their management practices during times of general uncertainty. The Covid-19 pandemic during 2020-2021 constituted a rare opportunity in the sense that other types of uncertainty have tended to be specific (e.g. increased competition), whereas the pandemic is taken to be generally unprecedented in relation to all other aspects of the current business environment. The research question was therefore formulated as: Have Swedish small scale manufacturing companies adopted adaptive management practices to a larger extent during the pandemic? To examine whether the adoption of these tools relate to uncertain environments, in the manner in which the theory suggests, a quantitative approach was utilized. A survey was sent to 616 Swedish manufacturing companies with 10-199 employees, out of which 88 useful answers were gathered. Although the respondents showed tendencies of adoption across the board (as the theory would predict) the changes made during the pandemic did not reach statistical significance in the linear probability model.
