This paper presents a prediction‐based algorithm designed to address out‐of‐step (OOS) conditions in power systems. The algorithm utilizes generator data obtained from phasor measurement units. The transient stability of a multi‐machine power system is evaluated using the equal‐area criterion (EAC). The proposed algorithm calculates the characteristics of the P‐δ curves within the EAC framework after a large disturbance. The critical P‐δ trace is determined by analysing the cumulative energy in the acceleration area following fault clearance. The stability margin of the rotor angle is then computed based on the actual active power and its relationship with the critical curve. The algorithm predicts the occurrence of OOS by comparing the measured active power with the corresponding value on the critical curve. Furthermore, a complementary strategy is proposed to predict the OOS condition in integrated inverter‐based power systems. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is validated through simulations conducted on the 73‐bus IEEE test power system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To enhance frequency and active power control performance, this research proposes a decentralized robust optimal tuning approach for power grid frequency regulation support using energy storage systems (ESSs) as the primary source of grid-forming (GFM) converters. The proposed approach employs the robust Kharitonov theory to find a family of stabilizing sets of a proportional-integral (PI)-based supplementary controller, which is used in the outer control layer of the GFM control system. A family of stabilizing parameter sets is found in the presence of system uncertainties and disturbances that are common in power grid operation. Then, using a developed Bayesian optimization algorithm, an optimal set of parameters is determined among the mentioned family member sets. The proposed sophisticated combination of a robust control theorem and an optimization algorithm provides a promising solution for the robust and optimal tuning of control system parameters in ESS-based GFM converters. This paper proposes an effective control synthesis strategy to stabilize grid forming converters in the presence of disturbances. The conventional control system for a grid forming converter is based on paralleled and cascaded proportional‐integral (PI) controllers, which are widely used in the industry due to their simplicity and reliability. However, the sequential adjustment of PI gains in different control loops, without consideration of dynamic interconnections limits their performance and capability. To address this limitation, the present paper introduces a control design method based on static output feedback theory. The proposed control scheme reduces the dynamic control design problem to an effective gain scheduling problem. In the proposed methodology, without removing the existing practical control structure, its dynamic parts are moved to the open‐loop system, and simultaneous scheduling of all remaining control gains is achieved during one control design process. MATLAB simulations were conducted to evaluate the performance of the designed control system, and compare it with the conventional control one in terms of step response characteristics. The results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed controller, ensuring system stability and exhibiting improved performance. The proposed control framework provides several advantages, including keeping stability in various disturbance conditions, simultaneous tuning of all control parameters, and no need to change the existing simple control structure. © 2024 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan and Wiley Periodicals LLC.
