Abstract

International audience; INTRODUCTION: Coccoliths are micrometric biogenic calcium carbonate plates forming the external skeleton of coccolithophores, the main marine calcifying unicellular phytoplankton [1]. Understanding how environmental factors influence the degree of calcification of coccoliths is of significant interest [2]. However due to their minute size and three-dimensional structure the study of coccoliths is not trivial and new characterization methods are required. EXPERIMENTAL: To reveal the morphology of coccoliths we successfully applied synchrotron three-dimensional coherent X-ray diffraction microscopy to image whole coccolithophores of the Gephyrocapsa, Emiliania and Reticulofenestra families with a resolution close to 30 nm (Fig. 1). The quality of the images allows isolating individual coccoliths from a coccosphere using segmentation procedure. Hence the number of segments, volume and mass of each coccolith could be determined. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: After isolating each coccolith from the coccospheres, we show that the number of segments and the mass of each coccolith depend on their central area perimeter. Assuming that this area is reminiscent of the organic base plate scale (obps) on which the biomineralization was initiated, our findings suggest the dominant role of the obps in the CaCO3 nucleation site number and the growth of coccoliths [3], strengthening the interplay between photosynthesis and biomineralization.CONCLUSIONS: By providing high resolution 3D images, CXDI emerges as a powerful technique for investigation of external skeleton of coccolithophores up to 7 microns in size. Abstract

International audience; A mechanistic kinetic law for the successive formation of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) and calcite is developed at room temperature. It relies on a detailed description of aqueous speciation and a combination of transition-state-theory (TST) and surface complexation model (SCM) equations [1]. The proposed law aims at describing several interrelated mechanisms: i) formation of ACC seeds with the creation of surface complexation sites, ii) formation of calcite initiated by surface complexation and creation of new surface complexation sites, iii) growth of calcite at the expanse of ACC, iv) progressive disappearance of ACC. The TST-SCM equations are implemented in the geochemical calculation software PhreeqC-3 [2] which allows managing complex kinetic laws. The calibration of the model is first performed on published data acquired on batch experiments [3]. Then, it is applied to a dynamic system which consists in the simultaneous injection of two aqueous solutions of CaCl 2 and Na 2 CO 3 , respectively, into a micro-channel. The dimensions of the system and the conditions of injection are representative of a recently published experimental work [4] performed on a Lab-On-a-Chip device. The reactive transport modelling is done using the PHAST software [5] since it is full coupled with PhreeqC. The numerical simulations could satisfactorily describe these observations. Obviously, there is room for further improvements like the use of more adequate flow equations (i.e. Navier-Stokes), as well as the implementation of the transport of particles.

Abstract

To get updated references on the structural, electronic, and vibration properties of the metastable TiO2(B) compound, infrared and Raman spectra of TiO2(B) are computed within the density functional theory framework and all active modes are assigned. Phonons and their possible coupling with the macroscopic electric fields resulting from the long-range interactions of instantaneous local dipoles (due to nuclear vibrations) in polar solids are taken into account through supercell calculations and longitudinal optical-transversal optical splitting corrections. Full structural relaxations using conventional density functional theory and hybrid functionals with localized Gaussian-type orbitals or plane-wave basis sets reveal a similar deviation of the local Ti environment compared to the TiO2(B) structural refinements reported so far. Such deviations are shown to be significant from those computed for anatase using the same method, thus yielding distinguishable spectroscopic responses for the two polymorphs. Abstract

A characteristic feature of the giant owl butterfly, i.e. Caligo memnon, is its big wing eyespot. This feature could serve as deceiving functionality for the butterfly against predators. As evidenced by scanning electron microscope (SEM) image on black part of eyespot, the scales on wing eyespot contain nanostructured ridges and cross-ribs. Applying direct measurement, statistical method, and Fourier analysis, the authors evidence that these nanostructures display order-disorder in their shape and position. The autocorrelation of SEM image provides average values of characteristic periods of the order-disorder nanostructures together with an estimation of corresponding correlation lengths. Linecuts obtained from the Fourier transform of SEM image were also analysed with the Hosemann function to extract similar information. These analyses indicate that the nanostructured order-disorder may contribute to blackness on wing eyespot. The authors thus conclude that the blackness on wing eyespot of C. memnon could be attributed to contributions from both the nanostructured order-disorder and melanin pigment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Calcium carbonate (CaCO3)/iron oxide composites were synthesized through a simple one-step impregnation procedure by mixing iron oxide nanoparticles (γ-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4) of about 6 nm in size and CaCO3 microparticles (Φ = 2 µm–8 µm, vaterite phase). The morphology and structural properties of CaCO3, iron oxide nanoparticles and CaCO3/iron oxide composites were characterized as a function of low iron content (0 %w to 3.2 %w) by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and 57Fe Mössbauer spectrometry. The phase transformations induced by thermal treatment and laser irradiation were investigated in situ by X-ray thermodiffraction (XRTD) and Raman spectroscopy. We have shown that the phase transformations observed by XRTD are also observed under laser irradiation as a consequence of the absorption of the laser irradiation by iron oxide nanoparticles.

Abstract

Titanium dioxide, well-known for its applications in the field of the photoactivity and the dye sensitized solar cells, is also a promising candidate as a negative electrode for lithium ion batteries. Anatase and TiO2(B) varieties are the most interesting ones, with electrochemical intercalations of 0.50 and 0.75 Li+ per TiO2 respectively. In nanometric sizes, these varieties exhibit higher energy and power densities. This study is focused on the synthesis of nanometric titanium dioxides by a soft chemistry way first developed by Kasuga et al. The three step method generates successively intermediates such as (i) titanate (NaOH)xTiO2(H2O)y (x = 0,3-0,5 et y = 0,4-0,7) by reflux treatment and (ii) titanic acid TiO2(H2O)z (z = 0,7-0,8) after ionic exchange and finally, after thermolysis, (iii) TiO2 with the same morphologies as the titanate precursors ones. Four types of sodium titanates were identified, three lamellar structures (nanotubes, seminanotubes and nanoribbons) and an amorphous nanosphères-like one. After ion exchange and annealing, nanotubes and nanospheres transform into anatase at 400°C and 500°C respectively, semi-nanotubes in a mixture of anatase and TiO2(B), and nanoribbons condense into TiO2(B) exclusively at around 400°C. The quantification of the anatase/TiO2(B) ratio by Raman spectroscopy was obtained by calibrating the intensity using electrochemistry. Finally, nanoribbons of TiO2(B) were tested in half lithium metal cells. They exhibit promising performance with a reversible capacity of 200 mAh.g-1 at C/3 (i.e. 0.6 Li+ per TiO2) and 100 mAh.g-1 at 15C.; Le dioxyde de titane, connu pour ses applications dans les domaines de la photoactivité et du photovoltaïque, est aussi un candidat d'électrode négative pour batteries lithium-ion. Sous forme nanométrique, elles présentent des densités d'énergie et de puissance accrues. L'objet de ce travail de thèse concerne la synthèse par chimie douce de dioxydes de titane nanométriques selon la méthode développée initialement par Kasuga et al. et leur caractérisation. La méthode en trois étapes génère successivement deux intermédiaires tels que (i) le titanate (NaOH)xTiO2(H2O)y (x = 0,3-0,5 et y = 0,4-0,7) par reflux, et (ii) l'acide titanique TiO2(H2O)z (z = 0,7-0,8) après échange ionique, et finalement, après recuit, (iii) le TiO2 de morphologie proche de celle du titanate précurseur. Quatre titanates de sodium ont été identifiés, trois structures lamellaires, se différenciant par leur morphologie (nanotubes, semi-nanotubes et nanorubans) et une structure amorphe s'apparentant à des nanosphères. Après échange ionique et recuit, les nanotubes et les nanosphères se transforment en anatase, les semi-nanotubes en un mélange d'anatase et de TiO2(B), et les nanorubans en TiO2(B) exclusivement. La quantification par spectroscopie Raman du ratio anatase/TiO2(B) a été développée en calibrant les intensités avec les résultats d'électrochimie. Enfin, les nanorubans de TiO2(B) ont été testés au sein de demi-batterie lithium métal. Les performances sont prometteuses avec une capacité réversible de 200 mAh.g-1 à C/3 (soit 0,6 Li+ par TiO2) et de 100 mAh.g-1 à 15C.

Abstract

Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) content of aqueous systems is a key function of the pH, of the total alkanility (TA), and of the partial pressure of CO2. However, common analytical techniques used to determine the DIC content in water are unable to operate under high CO2 pressure. Here, we propose to use Raman spectroscopy as a novel alternative to discriminate and quantitatively monitor the three dissolved inorganic carbon species CO2 (aq), HCO3-, and CO32- of alkaline solutions under high CO2 pressure (from P = 0 to 250 bar at T = 40 °C). In addition, we demonstrate that the pH values can be extracted from the molalities of CO2 (aq) and HCO3-. The results are in very good agreement with those obtained from direct spectrophotometric measurements using colored indicators. This novel method presents the great advantage over high pressure conventional techniques of not using breakable electrodes or reference additives and appears of great interest especially in marine biogeochemistry, in carbon capture and storage and in material engineering under high CO2 pressure. Abstract

The aim of the present work was to assess the merits of supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) as a process for protein encapsulation into calcium carbonate microparticles. Lysozyme, chosen as a model protein, was entrapped during CaCO3 precipitation in two different media: water (normal route) and SC-CO2. The particles were characterized and compared in terms of size, zeta potential, morphology by SEM, crystal polymorph and lysozyme encapsulation. Fluorescent and confocal images suggested the encapsulation and core–shell distribution of lysozyme into CaCO3 obtained by the SC-CO2 process. A high encapsulation efficiency was reached by a supercritical CO2 process (50%) as confirmed by the increased zeta potential value, lysozyme quantification by HPLC and a specific bioassay (M. lysodeikticus). Conversely, lysozyme was scarcely entrapped by the normal route (2%). Thus, supercritical CO2 appears to be an effective process for protein encapsulation within nanostructured CaCO3 particles.
