Oxygenic photosynthesis supplies organic carbon to the modern biosphere, but it is uncertain when this metabolism originated. It has previously been proposed1,2 that photosynthetic reaction centres capable of splitting water arose by about 3 billion years ago on the basis of the inferred presence of manganese oxides in Archaean sedimentary rocks. However, this assumes that manganese oxides can be produced only in the presence of molecular oxygen3, reactive oxygen species4,5 or by high-potential photosynthetic reaction centres6,7. Here we show that communities of anoxygenic photosynthetic microorganisms biomineralize manganese oxides in the absence of molecular oxygen and high-potential photosynthetic reaction centres. Microbial oxidation of Mn(II) under strictly anaerobic conditions during the Archaean eon would have produced geochemical signals identical to those used to date the evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis before the Great Oxidation Event1,2. This light-dependent process may also produce manganese oxides in the photic zones of modern anoxic water bodies and sediments.

The similar to 2.67 to similar to 2.46 Ga lower Transvaal Supergroup, South Africa, consists of a mixed siliciclastic-carbonate ramp that grades upward into an extensive carbonate platform, overlain by deep subtidal banded iron-formation. It is composed of 14 third-order sequences that develop from a mixed siliciclastic-carbonate ramp to a steepened margin followed by a rimmed margin that separated lagoonal environments from the open ocean. Drowning of the platform coincided with deposition of banded iron-formation across the Kaapvaal Craton. The geometry and stacking of these sequences are consistent with more recent patterns of carbonate accumulation, demonstrating that Neoarchean carbonate accumulation responded to subsidence, sea level change, and carbonate production similarly to Proterozoic and Phanerozoic platforms. The similarity of carbonate platform geometry through time, even with significant changes in dominant biota, demonstrates that rimmed margins are localized primarily by physiochemical conditions rather than growth dynamics of specific organisms.Stratigraphic patterns during deposition of the Schmidtsdrift and Campbellrand-Malmani subgroups are most consistent with variable thinning of the Kaapvaal Craton during extrusion of the similar to 2.7 Ga Ventersdorp lavas. Although depositional patterns are consistent with rifting of the western margin of the Kaapvaal Craton during this time, a rift-to-drift transition is not required to explain subsidence. Heating and thinning during Ventersdorp time can produce the observed thermal subsidence from similar to 2.7 to similar to 2.45 Ga if the thermal diffusivity of the craton was moderately low.

A detrital zircon U–Pb laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–quadrupole mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-QMS) provenance study was undertaken on samples selected from the Lower Gondwana successions preserved in the fault-bounded Bokaro and Jharia basins in India to investigate the provenance of the sediment and determine whether the strata were deposited in isolated syn-depositional graben basins or formed part of a wider regional depositional system. A total of 730 concordant U–Pb detrital zircon ages revealed six distinct age fractions: (i) a latest Neoproterozoic to earliest Cambrian age fraction (530 to 510 Ma), which tails down in some samples to older Neoproterozoic ages (650 to 630 Ma); (ii) a major age fraction with an age peak of earliest Neoproterozoic (950 Ma), accompanied in some samples by a twin Mesoproterozoic peak (1000 Ma); (iii) a middle Mesoproterozoic age fraction (1330 to 1300 Ma); (iv) a prominent earliest Mesoproterozoic zircon age fraction (1600 Ma); (v) a less well-defined late Palaeoproterozoic zircon age fraction (2100 to 1700 Ma, or 1600 Ma); and (vi) an Archaean zircon age fraction that typically comprises two zircon age fractions, namely zircons with early Neoarchaean ages (2800 to 2750 Ma) coupled with zircons with ages older than 3100 Ma. Comparison of these newly obtained age fractions with detrital zircon age data presented by Veevers & Saeed (2009) shows similarities with the Gondwana strata of the Mahanadi and Pranhita–Godavari basins, implying that strata preserved in the fault-bounded Gondwana basins in central east India formed part of a much wider regional depositional system and that they were not deposited in isolated half-graben or graben basins. Potential source regions to the Gondwana strata of the Bokaro and Jharia basins include the Eastern Ghats Mobile Belt and rock units in Antarctica. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is widely assumed that atmospheric oxygen concentrations remained persistently low (less than [10.sup.-5] times presentlevels) for about the first 2 billion years of Earth's history (1). The first long-term oxygenation of the atmosphere is thought to have taken place around 2.3 billion years ago, during the Great Oxidation Event (2,3). Geochemical indications of transient atmospheric oxygenation, however, date back to 2.6-2.7 billion years ago (4-6). Here we examine the distribution of chromium isotopes and redox-sensitive metals in the approximately 3-billion-year-old Nsuze palaeosol and in the near-contemporaneous Ijzermyn iron formation from the Pongola Supergroup, South Africa. We find extensive mobilization of redox-sensitive elements through oxidative weathering. Furthermore, using our data we compute a best minimum estimate for atmospheric oxygen concentrations at that time of 3 X [10.sup.-4] times present levels.
