Background: Early interventions are needed to support the behavioral health of healthcare staff in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Stress First Aid (SFA) is a self-care and peer support model for reducing burnout and stress that is designed for use in high-stress occupations. Methods: We conducted a mixed-methods evaluation of an SFA program in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). This brief, multi-session, didactic program was adapted for hospital workgroups. Program attendees completed a survey assessing implementation outcomes, burnout, stress, mood, and SFA skills at the beginning ( N = 246) and end ( n = 94) of the SFA program and a subgroup ( n = 11) completed qualitative feedback interviews. Findings: Program acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility were rated highly. From pre- to post-SFA, the impact of the pandemic on stress and anxiety, as well as proficiency in supporting peers increased. Qualitative findings suggest the program provided a shared language to discuss stress, normalized stress reactions, met a need for stress management tools, and helped staff feel valued, empowered, connected with each other. Staff reported being more aware of their stress, but SFA was insufficient to address many of the systemic sources of burnout and stress. Conclusions and Applications to Practice: While the SFA program was well received, the impact of brief programs is likely to be modest when implemented in the middle of an ongoing pandemic and when burnout arises from chiefly from systemic sources. Lessons learned during the program implementation that may guide future efforts are discussed.

A great deal of biblical interpretation over the past 30 years has focused upon imagery related to women in the book of Revelation. Very little scholarship has discussed children in Revelation, likely because there are very few in the Apocalypse. However, the limited passages in which children are present deserve to be examined with a focus upon the child. This article will discuss two passages in Revelation which refer to children, Rev. 2:18–29 and Rev. 12:1–5, with the latter receiving greater attention. I will analyze these passages using childist interpretation, building upon Kathleen Gallagher Elkins’s study of feminist and childist interpretation, which uses Rev. 12 as a case study to apply both methods to the same text. Imperial-critical reading will enhance the interpretation of these passages. As I discuss Rev. 12, I will also compare the myth of three Greek child gods, Apollo, Dionysius, and Persephone, to the child snatched away in Rev. 12:5, to understand more fully how this child fits within the overall message of Revelation.

This essay discusses Hemingway's apparent high regard for the cafe and the impact it has upon his life and writing. With reference to the short story 'A Clean, Well-lighted Place', his novel, The Sun Also Rises, as well as his letters and journalism, it argues that the cafe has particular value as an idealized site, which connects it to familiar themes in his work such as conduct and behaviour. Indeed, there exists such a thing as the perfect cafe, a supernal establishment, which seems to instantiate many of the principles, sentiments, practices, and virtues that we might associate with that famous paradigm of conduct in Hemingway studies, the Hemingway code. The Gospel of Mark was written in a time and place of religious and cultural diversity. As the author of the first narrative gospel, Mark had a unique task: he had to make the case that Jesus was the Son of God not only to Jewish audiences but also to non-Jewish Greeks. Some of the Greeks who would hear Mark’s Gospel were likely familiar with, if not adherents of, various mystery cults. One of the most important mystery cults in the ancient world was the Mysteries of Demeter and Persephone (also known as Korē). In this essay, I will engage in a comparative analysis of two adolescent girls: the daughter of Herodias in Mark 6:14–29, and Persephone, as she is depicted in the Hymn to Demeter. First, I will situate the Gospel of Mark in its broader religious and literary context. Second, I will briefly summary of the Homeric Hymn to Demeter and provide an overview of the initiation rituals of the Eleusinian Mysteries. Third, I will compare the Hymn and initiation rituals of the Mysteries to the daughter narrative in Mark 6, focusing on the agency of the girls and the act of dancing. I will support this assertion by examining other portions of the Gospel that may also be read as opposing the goddesses and the Eleusinian Mysteries: the parables of the sower and the growing seed (Mark 4:1–20 and 4:26–29); and the healing of the Geresene demoniac (5:1–20). I will argue that Mark used the story of Herodias’s daughter in part to discredit the mother and daughter goddesses in favor of Jesus the son and his father God.

This article explores the significance of the cafe in Wyndham Lewis’s first published novel, Tarr (1918). Charting the importance of the space upon Lewis’s formative life as a student in Europe and later among his literary peers, it proposes that Lewis has an idealised conception of the cafe, which stems from the legacy of the coffeehouses of the seventeenth and eighteenth century and the Russian tavern from Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov (1880). By comparing these ideals against the contemporary milieu in which Lewis found himself, we gain greater insight into the rhetorical intentions for the novel, such as the assault on bourgeois-bohemian cafe culture, as well as ultimately discovering that Lewis’s conception of the cafe has a fundamental role in the construction and form of the novel itself.

Heritage sites are an important part of understanding our role in history. They have the potential to teach us important lessons, such as where we came from and subsequently, the people it has made us today. As members of a large, heritage-led, regeneration project, we are working with the Hafod---Morfa Copperworks, a heritage site in the Lower Swansea Valley where there is not much to see or hear. The few ruins at the site make it difficult to imagine what the site would have been like back in its heyday. Our goal at the site is to draw people together, not to view a finished piece of curated heritage, but rather, to start conversations about their memories and the significance of the site to them and to discover what they would like to see at the site in the future. The technology we are producing is about engaging with the local community and stakeholders as groups to provoke discussion. This contrasts with previous uses of mobile guides which only attempt to be tourist aids. In this article, we report on two prototype technologies we have developed to help accomplish this task. Throughout the article, we discuss how and why designing performative technologies could help encourage people to visit, socialise and communicate within the area. Our early results suggest that expressive performative technologies are good at gaining spectators' attention and encouraging an active engagement between performer and spectator.
