Subjective quality of life could be considered one of the indicators of health behavior and wellbeing of women in the perinatal period. Accordingly, the aim of this paper was to examine how women in perinatal period perceive quality of life in various domains. Its relationship to age, number of pregnancies, course of pregnancies, and method of delivery and experience with Covid-19 pandemic was investigated, as well. Our sample consisted of 366 pregnant women in any period of pregnancy who came in for regular outpatient examinations and control, those who were hospitalized due to pathological pregnancy or due to the need for intensive care, as well as women in their postnatal period, one year after delivery, who were seeking professional advice from a gynecologist. The majority were aged 20 to 30 years (53.8%). The findings showed that assessed domains of subjective quality of life were related to a variety of experiences with the Covid-19 pandemic. The results are presented and discussed in detail. Implications and limitations are given, as well.

Introduction. The diagnosis of acute appendicitis (AA), as the most common cause of acute abdominal pain, has changed in the past decade by introducing scoring systems in addition to the use of clinical, laboratory parameters, and radiological examinations. This study aimed to assess the significance of the four scoring systems (Alvarado, Appendicitis Inflammatory Response (AIR), Raya Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Appendicitis (RIPASA) and Tzanakis) in the prediction of delayed appendectomy. Materials and methods. The study included 100 respondents, who were diagnosed with AA in the period from January 2018 to February 2019 and were also operated on. In addition to the clinical, laboratory, and ultrasonographic examinations, four scoring systems (Alvarado, AIR, RIPASA, and Tzanakis) were used to diagnose AA. According to the obtained histopathological (HP) findings, the patients were divided into 3 groups: timely appendectomy, delayed appendectomy and unnecessary appendectomy. Using the sensitivity and specificity of all 4 scoring systems, ROC analysis was performed to predict delayed appendectomy. Results. In the study that included 100 patients (58% men, 42% women), after the appendectomy was performed, the resulting HP showed that 74% had a timely appendectomy, while 16% had delayed and 10% had an unnecessary appendectomy. For the prediction of delayed appendectomy, the area under the ROC curve showed a value of 0.577 for the Alvarado score, 0.504 for the AIR, 0.651 for the RIPASA, and 0.696 for the Tzanakis. Sensitivity and specificity for the Alvarado score was 54% and 62%, for RIPASA 62.5% and 63.5%, for Tzanakis 69% and 60.8%, respectively. Combining the three scoring systems (Alvarado, RIPASA, and Tzanakis), the surface area under the ROC curve was 0.762 (95% CI 0.521–0.783), with a sensitivity of 85% and a specificity of 62%. Conclusion. In our study, the diagnostic accuracy of RIPASA and Tzanakis showed better results than Alvarado, while AIR cannot be used to predict delayed appendectomy in our population. However, the simultaneous application of all three scoring systems, RIPASA, Tzanakis and Alvarado, has shown much better discriminatory ability, with higher sensitivity and specificity, as opposed to their use alone. Combining scoring systems should help in proper diagnosis to avoid negative appendectomy, but additional studies with a larger number of patients are needed to support these results.

Physical activity is one of the key factors in protecting and promoting peoples’ health of all ages around the world.Healthy lifestyle that includes physical activity, healthy food and appropriate health education will creating healthy young people, who will have a healthy and long life. The aim of the paper was to determine if there was a link between socioeconomic status in the family and practicing regular physical activity among young people. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive-analytical study. It included 316 students in the second and third year of the study program for general medicine at the Faculty of Medicine at UKIM in Skopje. Results and Discussion: Students who practiced moderate physical activity came from families with monthly incomes higher than 30,000 denars or it was 48.4% compared to 34.65% of students who came from families with monthly incomes lower than 30,000 denars. There was a weak positive correlation between the monthly income of students' families and the practice of physical activity, R=0.21, p=0.002. Conclusion: The financial situation in the family has a main role in practicing physical activity. Therefore, with the increase of the family budget, the days when the students are physically active increase, too.

Introduction/Objective. Buprenorphine appears generally similar to, and in some cases superior to, methadone in terms of maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes. The objective of the study was to assess some physical birth outcomes in neonates prenatally exposed to buprenorphine. Methods. During a seven-year period, nine patients have been treated with buprenorphine during their pregnancy. All women underwent interview, clinical investigations, biochemical analysis, toxicological screening, viral markers for hepatitis B, C, HIV, with regular check-ups by an obstetrician and a psychiatrist. Newborn outcomes included: birth weight in grams, birth length in centimeters, physical anomalies, head/chest circumference in centimeters, Apgar score at 1 minute / 5 minutes, gestational age (weeks), newborn length of hospital stay in days, breast-feeding, the newborn?s need for pharmacologic treatment after delivery. Results. The mean birth weight was 2,991.11 ? 37 g; birth length was 49.44 ? 2.29 cm; head circumference was 33.11 ? 0.78 cm; chest circumference was 32.33 ? 1 cm; first minute Apgar score was 8.22, fifth minute 9.22; age at delivery was 38.77 ? 1.09 weeks; hospitalization after delivery 4.44 ? 1.13 days. None of the newborns had physical anomalies. Six of the newborns were breastfed. Conclusion. Buprenorphine is a safe and important part of a complete comprehensive treatment approach in pregnant women with opioid use disorder. Buprenorphine treatment of maternal opioid use disorder indicated a low risk of preterm birth, normal birth weight and length, head and chest circumference, Apgar score, short hospitalization after delivery.

Introduction. Monitoring of graft function by creatinine concentrations in serum and calculated glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is recommended after kidney transplantation. KDIGO recommendations on the treatment of transplant patients advocate usage of one of the existing mathematical equations based on serum creatinine. We compared clinical application of three equations based on serum creatinine in monitoring the function of transplanted kidney. Methods. A total number of 55 adult patients who received their first renal allograft from living donors at our transplant center in between 2011-2014 were included into the study. Renal allograft GFR was estimated by the Cockroft-Gault, Nankivell and MDRD formula, and correlated with clinical parameters of donors and recipients. Results. The mean age of recipients was 35.7±9.5 (range 16-58), and the mean age of donors was 55.5±9.0 (34- 77) years. Out of this group of 55 transplant patients, 50(90.91%) were on hemodialysis (HD) prior to transplantation. HD treatment was shorter than 24 months in 37(74%) transplant patients. The calculated GFR with MDRD equation showed the highest mean value at 6 and 12 months (68.46±21.5; 68.39±24.6, respectively) and the lowest at 48 months (42.79±12.9). According to the Cockroft&Gault equation GFR was the highest at 12 months (88.91±24.9) and the lowest at 48 months (66.53±18.1 ml/min). The highest mean level (80.53±17.7) of the calculated GFR with the Nankivell equation was obtained at 12 months and the lowest (67.81±16.7 ml/min) at 48 months. The values of Pearson’s correlation coefficient between the calculated GFR and the MDRD at 2 years after transplantation according to donor’s age of r=-0.3224, correlation between GFR and the Cockfroft & Gault at 6 and 12 months and donor’s age (r=-0.2735 and r=-0.2818), and correlation between GFR and the Nankivell at 2 years and donor’s age of r=-0.2681, suggested a conclusion that calculated GFR was lower in recipients who had an older donors. Conclusion. Our analysis showed difference in the calculated GFR with different equations at the same time points. Using one mathematical equation during the total post-transplantation period would be a recommended method in order to eliminate the discrepancy in determining the stage of kidney failure.

Background The impact of serum uric acid (UA) on morbidity and mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients is quite controversial in relation to the general population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of serum UA with both mortality and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in HD patients. Methods This longitudinal study enrolled 225 prevalent HD patients who were classified into three groups according to their follow-up-averaged UA (FA-UA) levels: low FA-UA (FA-UA 450 µmol/L). Echocardiography was performed on a nondialysis day and the presence of LVH was defined based on a left ventricular mass index (LVMI) >131 and >100 g/m2 for men and women, respectively. The patients were followed during a 60-month period. Results The mean FA-UA level was 425 ± 59 µmol/L (range 294–620). There was a consistent association of higher FA-UA with better nutritional status (higher body mass index, normalized protein catabolic rate, creatinine, albumin and phosphorus), higher hemoglobin, but lower C-reactive protein and LVMI. During the 5-year follow-up, 81 patients died (36%) and the main causes of death were cardiovascular (CV) related (70%). When compared with the reference group, the hazard ratio for all-cause mortality was 1.75 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02–2.98; P = 0.041] in the low FA-UA group, but there was no significant association with the high FA-UA group. In contrast, FA-UA did not show an association with CV mortality neither with the lower nor with the high FA-UA group. The unadjusted odds ratio (OR) of LVH risk in the low FA-UA compared with the reference FA-UA group was 3.11 (95% CI 1.38–7.05; P = 0.006), and after adjustment for age, gender, diabetes and CV disease, ORs for LVH persisted significantly only in the low FA-UA group [OR 2.82 (95% CI 1.16–6.88,); P = 0.002]. Conclusions Low serum UA is a mortality risk factor and is associated with LVH in HD patients. These results are in contrast with the association of UA in the general population and should be the subject of further research.

IntroductionThe aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the association between serum magnesium (Mg) and mortality, in particular the cause-specific mortality of Mg and other risk factors in hemodialysis (HD) patients.MethodsWe studied a cohort of 185 HD patients receiving thrice-weekly HD treatment, on a dialysate Mg concentration of 0.5 mmol/L. We stratified 3 patient groups according to the level of Mg: lower (1.3 mm/L).ResultsDuring the 5-year follow-up, 60 patients died, with cardiovascular (CV) disease as the predominant cause (73.3%). Hazard ratio (HR) for all-cause and CV mortality were 2.55 and 2.67 in the lower versus intermediate Mg group, but there was no significant association between the higher and intermediate Mg group. Univariate Cox regression analysis showed that Mg 1,200 pg/mL However, in the multivariate analysis only CRP ≥10 mg/L with HR 3.89 was a significant predictor of mortality. Subgroup analyses showed that among patients with CRP >10 mg/L, HR for all-cause and CV mortality of the lower versus intermediate Mg group were 1.96 and 2.39, respectively, not reaching significance for the higher versus intermediate Mg group. Conversely, there was no association between Mg level and all-cause and CV mortality within these 3 groups among patients with CRP ConclusionsLower serum Mg level was significantly associated with an increased all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in HD patients, especially in inflamed patients.

Introduction. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways in which many cells play a role with secreting a variety of mediators responsible for the clinical manifestation of asthma. It is assumed that IL-33 is one of the earliest-released mediators and can orchestrate the immune cascade of the disease. The aim of this study was to examine the role and clinical significance of IL-33 as a new and insufficiently explored mediator of inflammation in patients with uncontrolled moderate asthma. Methods. The study included 87 patients with asthma. Serum IL-33 was measured in all patients by ELISA method. The obtained data were statistically analyzedusing the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk's test. Qualitative data were presented in absolute and relative numbers, and quantitative data were presented with measures of descriptive statistics. Statistically significant values were considered forp Results. Majority of included patients were female (75.86%). The average age of patientswas 42.3±15.9 years. The results of IL-33 in all patients were significantly increased compared to the reference value of IL-33 which is 0pg/ml. The average values of IL-33 ranged from 6.47±29.3 and they were insignificantly higher in the group with female patients compared to males (p=0.27), and insignificantly correlated with age (p=0.26). Conclusion. Even though a limited number of studies haveexplored the IL-33, results have shown higher serum level of IL-33 in asthma patients compared to healthy people, emphasizing the factthat IL-33 is an attrac tive candidate for targeted therapy and prognosis inasthma patients.

Obesity and insulin resistance are frequently seen comorbidities in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), affecting the already disturbed metabolism of these patients. Disturbed secretion of adiponectin and leptin could be one of the contributing factors of obesity and insulin resistance in patients with PCOS. The aim of this study was to determine the levels of adiponectin and leptin in PCOS patients, as well as their association with other components of the syndrome. This cross-sectional study determined clinical, hormonal, and biochemical markers in 61 women with PCOS and 56 controls. There was a statistically significant difference in adiponectin and leptin between the groups (p>0.001). OBJECTIVE The incidence of autoantibodies may be associated with the duration of drug use. In this study, we assessed the association between the duration of heroin dependence and various humoral immunologic indicators, including IgA, IgG, IgM, complement component 3, complement component 4, rheumatoid factor, anti-β2-glycoprotein 1 (IgA, IgG, IgM), antinuclear antibody, circulating immune complexes, and cryoglobulins. METHODS A total of 363 patients with heroin dependence were enrolled in this cross-sectional and prospective study over a 3.5-year period. Depending on the duration of heroin use, participants were divided into 3 groups: up to 3 years, 4 to 7 years, and more than 7 years of heroin dependence. All patients were analyzed for the indicators. RESULTS There was a significant difference between the duration of heroin dependence and increased concentration of IgA (P = 0.0000), IgG (P = 0.0000), IgM (P = 0.0001), complement component 3 (P = 0.042), rheumatoid factor (P = 0.0001), anti-β2-glycoprotein 1 (IgA, P = 0.0098; IgG, P = 0.0000; IgM, P = 0.0000), the presence of antinuclear antibody (P = 0.01) and cryoglobulins (P = 0.0000), and decreased concentration of complement component 4 (P = 0.002). There was no significant difference in circulating immune complex concentration (P = 0.097). CONCLUSIONS A longer duration of heroin dependence was associated with increased concentrations of IgA, IgG, IgM, complement component 3, rheumatoid factor, anti-β2-glycoprotein 1 (IgA, IgG, IgM), presence of antinuclear antibodies and cryoglobulins, and decreased concentrations of complement component 4, but there was no influence on circulating immune complex values.

Background: Globally, 10 million injecting drug users (IDUs) are estimated to be HCV-positive, resulting in a prevalence of 67%. We evaluated the previously unassessed HCV infection amongst IDUs in Kosovo. We determined the distribution of HCV genotypes among IDUs in Prishtina, ascertained their phylogenetic relatedness, and investigated the main risk factors associated with the HCV infection. Methods: Samples were obtained from 205 IDUs in Prishtina, Kosovo, during the Biological and Behavioral Surveillance Study (BioBSS). HCV-positive samples were further genotyped and sequenced. The results were linked with epidemiological data obtained in interviews determining the underlying causes of HCV transmission. Results: The majority of the 205 IDUs participating in the BioBSS were men (89.3%) with a mean age of 36 years and a history of imprisonment, unemployment, and over a decade of injection drug use. Forty-eight percent of the IDUs were positive for anti-HCV antibodies, and HCV RNA was detected in 70 IDUs (70.7% of the anti-HCV positive IDUs). The following HCV subtypes were detected: subtype 1a (64.3%), subtype 3a (34.3%), and subtype 2k (1.4%). Phylogenetic clustering was evident among 66.7% of the HCV subtype 1a samples and 71.4% of the subtype 3a samples. Significant independent predictors for anti-HCV positivity among IDUs were older age, longer duration of drug use, low education level, drug injection in “shooting galleries”, and imprisonment. Conclusions: In Prishtina, Kosovo, nearly half of the IDUs were determined to be anti-HCV positive and the majority had an active infection. HCV subtype 1a was found to be most prevalent, followed by subtype 3a. Our results emphasize the urgent need for the implementation of harm-reduction programs among IDUs in Kosovo, specifically treatment and prevention through needle/syringe exchange programs directed at gathering places, such as shooting galleries.

Introduction Ankle fractures are common injuries. Since the recognition of the importance of syndesmotic injury in ankle fractures, much of the scientific work has been focused on concomitant syndesmotic injury. Despite the invention of novel devices for restoration and maintenance of the congruent syndesmosis following syndesmotic injury, the metallic syndesmotic screw is still considered to be the “gold standard”. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical results in patients who retained the syndesmosis screw with those in whom the screw was removed following open reduction and internal fixation of the malleolar fracture associated with syndesmosis disruption. Materials and methods This was a retrospective study of 82 patients. Minimum follow-up was 12 months. Clinical evaluation included American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for patient general satisfaction. The condition of the screw (removed, intact or broken), presence of radiolucency around the syndesmotic screw and the tibiofibular clear space were recorded using final follow-up radiographs. Results Three cortices were engaged in 66 patients (80%) and quadricortical fixation was performed in the remaining 16 patients (20%). The number of engaged cortices did not correlate with the clinical outcome and screw fracture. A single syndesmotic screw was used in 71 patients (86%. The mean AOFAS score in the group with intact screw (I) was 83; the scores in the group with broken screw (B) and removed screw (R) were 92.5 and 85.5, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the three groups: this was due to the difference between groups I and B; the difference between groups I and R and groups B and R were not statistically significant. There were no statistically significant differences in VAS results. Conclusion There were no statistically significant differences in clinical outcome between the group with the screw retained and the group in which the screw was removed; however, the group with broken screws had the best clinical outcome based on AOFAS score. Widening of the syndesmosis after screw removal was not evident. We do not recommend routine syndesmosis screw removal.

Introduction: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral developmental disorder usually diagnosed in children, with appearance of the first symptoms before the age of seven years. The disorder is characterized by inattention and/or impulsivity and hyperactivity that can seriously affect many aspects of behavior and performance at school. ADHD can be associated with comorbidities, such as oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, anxiety or depression. Material and Methods: The study was done on a sample of 500 university students. For the measurement of ADHD symptoms, the ADHD Adult Self-report Scale was used and for depression measurement DASS. Results: The results of this screening study showed that ADHD is highly significant associated with gender (p = 0.0004). Men more often than women have this kind of disorder. Female students have attention subtype deficit, while man student have often hyperactivity/impulsivity disorder and combined subtype due to psychological, temperament and character gender differences among boys and girls. Female examinees are significantly (p=0.028) more often depressed compared to male examinees. Conclusion: The examined correlations are positive ones or direct, meaning that by increasing the values of the scores from both subscales from the Evaluation ADHD Scale one also increases the scores from the Depression Scale, and vice versa. For a value of p=0.001 and p=0.004 these correlations are statistically highly significant, in other words highly important.

Introduction: The success of the antiviral treatment in patients with chronic hepatitis C depends on the factors related to the virus and the host. The aim of the study is the analysis of the antiviral therapy which is a combination of pegylated interferon and ribavirin, considering various factors that will identify the predictors of the sustained virological response. Material and Methods: This retrospective study included 226 patients, divided in two groups. Patients with sustained virological response and patients without sustained virological response were compared in terms of the following factors: genotype, viral load, gender, age, inflammatory and fibrotic changes in the liver, metabolic abnormalities, obesity and fatty liver. Results: The rate of the sustained virological response is 83.6%, more frequently in patients with genotype 3, with evidenced statistical significance (90.54%). The factors that significantly contribute to sustained virological response are related to the age (p = 0.0001), genotype (p = 0.002), mode of transmission (p = 0.005), inflammatory changes in the liver (p = 0.028), body mass index (p = 0.022) and insulin resistance (p = 0.039). The high rate of sustained virological response is related to the younger age of the patients which indirectly means short Hepatitis C Virus infection duration, absence of advanced liver disease and lack of significant co-morbid conditions. Single confirmed independent predictors of sustained virological response are the age (OR 0.928, p = 0.0001) and genotype (OR 3.134, p = 0.005). Conclusions: Factors that are related to the virological response are the age, genotype, mode of transmission, inflammatory changes in the liver, body mass index and insulin resistance, but still, independent predictors of sustained virologic response are the age and the genotype.

A consensus about the optimal timing of dialysis initiation is still controversial. Thus, the goal of this analysis was to compare outcomes in patients with early and late referral with early and late initiation of hemodialysis (HD). We studied 190 patients (mean age 52.03 ± 14.22) who were initiated on HD between 1994 and 2004. Patients who received regular nephrology care during 12 months before HD initiation were categorized as early referrals (ER) and those without nephrology care were late referrals (LR). BACKGROUND: High blood cholesterol is part of metabolic syndrome and can be caused by medical conditions or bad dietary habits.AIM: The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia in privies diagnosed patients with the severe and very severe stage of COPD, which were stable.MATERIAL AND METHODS: We investigated 100 subjects, all of them smokers, with smoking status >10 years, stratified into two groups: with severe and very severe stage of the disease. It was clinical, randomized, cross-sectional study. Besides demographic parameters and functional parameters, body mass index, cholesterol, LDL, and HDL were investigated.RESULTS: In the group of patients with very severe COPD were recorded significantly higher average values of cholesterol (6.16 ± 1.5 vs. 5.61 ± 1.1, p = 0.039). As independent significant factors influencing cholesterol in the group with a very severe COPD were confirmed the age of the patients (p = 0.005), LDL (p = 0.004) and HDL (p = 0.002). In the group with severe COPD, only LDL was confirmed as an independent significant factor that has an impact on cholesterol (p < 0.0001).CONCLUSION: The results of our survey demonstrated a high level of blood cholesterol and LDL, and low level of blood HDL in both investigated group’s patients with COPD.

AIM: The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in privies diagnosed chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients with severe and very severe disease, which ware stable.METHODS: We investigated 100 subjects, all of them smokers, with smoking status >10 years. They were stratified in two groups. It was clinical, randomized, cross sectional study. Besides demographic parameters, functional parameters, BMI, cholesterol, LDL and HDL, and the level of blood sugar was measured. RESULTS: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus in our survey in total number of COPD patients with severe and very severe stage was 21%. In the very severe group were recorded significantly higher average values of glycaemia compared with severe group (7.67 ± 3.7 vs. 5.62 ± 0.9, p = 0.018). In the group with severe COPD, it was not confirmed any factor with significant predictive effect on the values of glycaemia. Background Concurrent radiochemotherapy is a recommended treatment option for patients with locally advanced squamous cell head and neck carcinomas with recent data showing the most significant absolute overall and event-free survival benefit achieved in patients with oropharyngeal tumours. The aim of this study was to analyse the results of three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy given with concomitant weekly cisplatin in patients with advanced oropharyngeal carcinoma and to identify prognostic factors influencing outcomes of this patients category. Methods Sixty-five patients with stage III or IV squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx who underwent concurrent radiochemotherapy between January 2005 and December 2010 were retrospectively analyzed. All patients received radiotherapy to 70 Gy/35 fractions/2 Gy per fraction/5 fractions per week. Concurrent chemotherapy consisted of weekly cisplatin (30 mg/m2) started at the first day of radiotherapy. Results Median age was 57 years (range, 36 to 69 years) and 59 (90.8%) patients were male. Complete composite response was achieved in 47 patients (72.3%). Local and/or regional recurrence was the most frequent treatment failure present in 19 out of 25 patients (76.0%). At a median follow-up of 14 months (range, 5 to 72 months), 2-year local relapse-free, regional relapse-free, locoregional relapse-free, disease-free, and overall survival rates were 48.8%, 57.8%, 41.7%, 33.2% and 49.7%, respectively. On multivariate analysis the only significant factor for inferior regional relapse-free survival was the advanced N stage (p = 0.048). Higher overall stage was independent prognostic factor for poorer local relapse-free survival, locoregional relapse-free survival and disease-free survival (p = 0.022, p = 0.003 and p = 0.003, respectively). Pre-treatment haemoglobin concentration was an independent prognostic factor for local relapse-free survival, regional relapse-free survival, locoregional relapse-free survival, disease-free survival, and overall survival (p = 0.002, p = 0.021, p = 0.001, p = 0.002 and p = 0.002, respectively). Conclusions Poor treatments results of this study suggested that introduction of intensity-modulated radiotherapy, use of induction chemotherapy followed by concurrent radiochemotherapy, accelerated radiotherapy regimens, and molecular targeted therapies could positively influence treatment outcomes. The incorporation of reversal of anaemia should be also expected to provide further improvement in locoregional control and survival in patients with advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx.

Osteosarcoma is a very rare malignant bone tumor with an incidence of 4-6 cases in 1,000,000 inhabitants and appears mostly in the young and active population aged 1030 years (Price & Jeffree, 1977). Amputations and disarticulations as dominant treatment for malignant bone tumors in the beginning of 20th century are rarely and very selectively used today. Before 1970, amputation was the primary treatment for high-grade osteosarcoma and 80% of patients died of lung metastatic disease. Despite aggressive and radical surgery, 5year survival was low (10-20%) (Rosen et al., 1976). Introducing new sophisticated diagnostic methods (CT and MRI) gave the possibility of precise anatomic definition of the tumors and the borders of infiltration into the surrounding tissues. Better planning of the biopsy and the definite operative procedure, and fostering better patient selection for specific treatment strategies, can decrease the risk of tumor spread into the surrounding tissue and lower the risk of distant metastases. After 1980, improvement of chemotherapeutic protocols with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, better preoperative planning and modern reconstructive options after resection of osteosarcoma led to better survival rates of patients with limb-sparing procedures (Bacci et al., 1993, Bruland & Phil, 1999). Currently, 80 85% of the patients with osteosarcoma on the extremities can be safely treated with wide resection and limb preservation (Di Caprio et al., 2003). A multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment, combination chemotherapy and a number of options for reconstruction after osteosarcoma resection (especially in chemotherapy-sensitive tumors) have increased long-term survival rates from 60 to 80%. Amputations, once a dominant treatment for malignant bone tumors, now are rarely and very selectively used. Most patients with extremity-localized osteosarcoma are candidates for limb-sparing procedures because of the: effective chemotherapeutic agents and regimens, the improved imaging modalities, and advances in reconstructive surgery.

Background. The amplification and the overexpression of the Her-2/neu gene have been shown in certain human tumours and are postulated to be important in human carcinogenesis. In this study we evaluated the expression of HER-2/neu gene in patients with lung carcinoma (LC) and assessed its prognostic significance. Patients and methods. HER-2/neu expression was determined in 127 LC patients using immunohistochemistry (IHC) performed on paraffin-embedded section – Hercep TestTM (DAKO). Results. The overall HER-2/neu expression was seen in 36 (28.35%) of 127 LC patients. According to the histological type, HER-2/neu overexpression was detected in 12 patients with adenocarcinomas (60%), in 19 patients with squamous cell carcinomas (31.14%), in 4 patients with small cell-lung carcinomas (10%) and in 1 patient with other carcinomas (16.66%). Introduction: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral developmental disorder usually diagnosed in children, with appearance of the first symptoms before the age of seven years. The disorder is characterized by inattention and/or impulsivity and hyperactivity that can seriously affect many aspects of behavior and performance at school. Specific sociodemographic characteristics seem to contribute to the appearance of ADHD. Material and methods: The study was done on a sample of 500 university students. For the measurement of ADHD symptoms, the ADHD Adult Self-report Scale was used and a specifically designed questionnaire for collecting sociodemographic data. Results: The results of this screening study showed that in 184 (48.7%) respondents the symptoms of the disorder in the activity and attention were registered. ADHD is highly significant associated with gender (p = 0.0004). Men more often than women have this kind of disorder. Our results also showed that living and material conditions were not associated with a higher prevalence of ADHD.
