Search

The point-spread function (PSF) is a fundamental property of any astronomical instrument. In interferometers, differing array configurations combined with their uv coverage, and various weighting schemes can produce an irregular but deterministic PSF. As a result, the PSF is often deconvolved using CLEAN-style algorithms to improve image fidelity. In this paper, we revisit a significant effect that causes the flux densities measured with any interferometer to be systematically offset from the true values. Using a suite of carefully controlled simulations, we show that the systematic offset originates from a mismatch in the units of the image produced by these CLEAN-style algorithms. We illustrate that this systematic error can be significant, ranging from a few to tens of per cent. Accounting for this effect is important for current and future interferometric arrays, such as MeerKAT, LOFAR, and the SKA, whose core-dominated configuration naturally causes an irregular PSF. We show that this offset is independent of other systematics, and can worsen due to some factors such as the goodness of the fit to the PSF, the deconvolution depth, and the signal-to-noise ratio of the source. Multiwavelength studies indicate that nuclear activity and bulge properties are closely related, but the details remain unclear. To study this further, we combine Hubble Space Telescope bulge structural and photometric properties with 1.5 GHz, e -MERLIN nuclear radio continuum data from the LeMMINGs survey for a large sample of 173 'active' galaxies (LINERs and Seyferts) and 'inactive' galaxies (H  ii s and absorption line galaxies, ALGs). Dividing our sample into active and inactive, they define distinct (radio core luminosity)–(bulge mass), |$L_{\rm R,core}-M_{*, \rm bulge}$| , relations, with a mass turnover at |$M_{*, \rm bulge}\sim 10^{9.8 \pm 0.3} \rm { M_{\odot }}$| (supermassive blackhole mass |$M_{\rm BH} \sim 10^{6.8 \pm 0.3} \rm M_{\odot }$|), which marks the transition from AGN-dominated nuclear radio emission in more massive bulges to that mainly driven by stellar processes in low-mass bulges. None of our 10/173 bulge-less galaxies host an AGN. The AGN fraction increases with increasing |$M_{*,\rm bulge}$| such that |$f_{\rm optical\_AGN}\propto M_{*,\rm bulge}^{0.24 \pm 0.06}$| and |$f_{\rm radio\_AGN}\propto M_{*,\rm bulge}^{0.24 \pm 0.05}$|. Between |$M_{*,\rm bulge}\sim 10^{8.5}$| and |$10^{11.3} \rm M_{\odot }$| , |$f_{\rm optical\_AGN}$| steadily rises from 15 ± 4 to 80 ± 5 per cent. We find that at fixed bulge mass, the radio loudness, nuclear radio activity, and the (optical and radio) AGN fraction exhibit no dependence on environment. Radio-loud hosts preferentially possess an early-type morphology than radio-quiet hosts, the two types are however indistinguishable in terms of bulge Sérsic index and ellipticity, while results on the bulge inner logarithmic profile slope are inconclusive. We finally discuss the importance of bulge mass in determining the AGN triggering processes, including potential implications for the nuclear radio emission in nearby galaxies. Vulliamy T, Beswick R, Kirwan MJ, Hossain U, Walne AJ, Dokal I. Telomere length measurement can distinguish pathogenic from non-pathogenic variants in the shelterin component, TIN2. Dyskeratosis congenita (DC) is a heterogeneous bone marrow failure syndrome with seven disease-causing genes identified to date, six of which are linked to telomere maintenance. Mutations in one of these genes ( TINF2), which encodes a component of the shelterin complex, are associated with particularly short telomeres. Among the 224 consecutive patients with different forms of bone marrow failure (46 with DC, 122 with aplastic anaemia and 57 with some features of DC), we have identified 16 new families with variants in exon 6 of the TINF2 gene, eight of which are novel. We observe that the phenotype associated with these mutations extends to a severe early presentation, not always classified as DC. In addition, we see that some of the variants identified are not associated with short telomeres and are also found in asymptomatic individuals. In the absence of any direct functional assay, the data indicates that the telomere length measurement can inform us as to which variants in TINF2 are pathogenic and which may be non-pathogenic. ABSTRACT From a combination of Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) and global Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations of the starburst galaxy M82, images of 36 discrete sources at resolutions ranging from ∼3 to ∼80 mas at 1.7 GHz are presented. Of these 36 sources, 32 are identified as supernova remnants, two are H ii regions and three remain unclassified. Sizes, flux densities and radio brightnesses are given for all of the detected sources. Additionally, global VLBI only data from this project are used to image four of the most compact radio sources. These data provide a fifth epoch of VLBI observations of these sources, covering a 19-yr time-line. In particular, the continued expansion of one of the youngest supernova remnants, 43.31+59.3, is discussed. The deceleration parameter is a power-law index used to represent the time evolution of the size of a supernova remnant. For the source 43.31+59.3, a lower limit to the deceleration parameter is calculated to be 0.53 ± 0.06, based on a lower limit of the age of this source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A faint new radio source has been detected in the nuclear region of the starburst galaxy M82 using Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network radio observations designed to monitor the flux density evolution of the recent bright supernova SN 2008iz. This new source was initially identified in observations made between 2009 May 1 and 5 but had not been present in observations made 1 week earlier, or in any previous observations of M82. In this Letter, we report the discovery of this new source and monitoring of its evolution over its first 9 months of existence. The true nature of this new source remains unclear, and we discuss whether this source is an unusual and faint supernova, a supermassive black hole associated with the nucleus of M82 or intriguingly the first detection of radio emission from an extragalactic microquasar. In this paper, we investigate the radio-mid-infrared (MIR) correlation at very low flux densities using extremely deep 1.4-GHz subarcsec angular resolution Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer + Very Large Array observations of a field centred upon the Hubble Deep Field-North, in conjunction with Spitzer 24-μm data. From these results, the MIR-radio correlation is extended to the very faint (∼μJy) radio source population. Tentatively, we detect a small deviation from the correlation at the faintest infrared flux densities. We suggest that this small observed change in the gradient of the correlation is the result of a suppression of the MIR emission in faint star-forming galaxies. This deviation potentially has significant implications for using either the MIR or non-thermal radio emission as a star formation tracer of very low luminosity galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New observations are reported of J-band spectra (1.04–1.4 μm) of three Seyfert 2 galaxies, Mkn 34, Mkn 78 and NGC 5929. In each case the spectral range includes the near-infrared lines of [Fe ii], [P ii], He i and Paβ. Each Seyfert galaxy has a known radio jet, and we investigate the infrared line ratios of the nuclear and extended regions of each galaxy compared to the radio structure. In Mkn 34 there is a clear indication of an extranuclear region, probably coincident with a shock induced by the radio jet, in which [Fe ii] is considerably enhanced, although the nuclear emission is almost certainly the result of photoionization by the continuum of the active nucleus. Similar effects in extranuclear regions are seen in the other objects, in the case of Mkn 78 confirming recent studies by Ramos Almeida et al. A possible detection of extranuclear [P ii] emission suggests, if real, that photoionization by the active nucleus is the dominant line excitation mechanism over the whole source, including the regions coincident with the radio jet. We present the results of a second epoch of 18-cm global very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations, taken on 2001 February 23, of the central kiloparsec of the nearby starburst galaxy Messier 82. These observations further investigate the structural and flux evolution of the most compact radio sources in the central region of M82. The two most compact radio objects in M82 have been investigated . Using this recent epoch of data in comparison with our previous global VLBI observations and two earlier epochs of European VLBI network observations, we measure expansion velocities in the range of for 41.95+575 and 9000–11 000 km s−1 for 43.31+592 using various independent methods. In each case, the measured remnant expansion velocities are significantly larger than the canonical expansion velocity (500 km s−1) of supernova remnants (SNRs) within M82 predicted from theoretical models. In this paper, we discuss the implications of these measured expansion velocities with respect to the high-density environment that the SNRs are expected to reside in within the centre of the M82 starburst. Using a combination of observations involving the Very Large Array (VLA), MERLIN and global Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) networks we have made a detailed study of the radio continuum and the neutral hydrogen (H i) kinematics and distribution within the central kiloparsec of the radio galaxy 3C 293. These observations trace the complex jet structure and identify the position of the steeply inverted radio core at 1.3 GHz. Strong H i absorption is detected against the majority of the inner kiloparsec of 3C 293. This absorption is separated into two dynamically different and spatially resolved systems. Against the eastern part of the inner radio jet, narrow H i absorption is detected and shown to have higher optical depths in areas cospatial with a central dust lane. Additionally, this narrow line is shown to follow a velocity gradient of ∼50 km s−1 arcsec−1, consistent with the velocity gradient observed in optical spectroscopy of ionized gas. We conclude that the narrow H i absorption, dust and ionized gas are physically associated and situated several kiloparsecs from the centre of the host galaxy. Against the western jet emission and core component, broad and complex H i absorption is detected. This broad and complex absorption structure is discussed in terms of two possible interpretations for the gas kinematics observed. We explore the possibility that these broad, double absorption spectra are the result of two gas layers at different velocities and distances along these lines of sight. A second plausible explanation for this absorbing structure is that the H i is situated in rotation about the core of this radio galaxy with some velocity dispersion resulting from infall and outflow of gas from the core region. We present subarcsec angular resolution observations of the neutral gas in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 520. The central kpc region of NGC 520 contains an area of significantly enhanced star formation. The radio continuum structure of this region resolves into ∼10 continuum components. By comparing the flux densities of the brightest of these components at 1.4 GHz with published 15-GHz data we infer that these components detected at 1.4 and 1.6 GHz are related to the starburst and are most likely to be collections of several supernova remnants within the beam. None of these components is consistent with emission from an active galactic nuclei. Both neutral hydrogen (H i) and hydroxyl (OH) absorption lines are observed against the continuum emission, along with a weak OH maser feature probably related to the star formation activity in this galaxy. Strong H i absorption traces a velocity gradient of 0.5 km s−1 pc−1 across the central kpc of NGC 520. The H i absorption velocity structure is consistent with the velocity gradients observed in both the OH absorption and in CO emission observations. The neutral gas velocity structure observed within the central kpc of NGC 520 is attributed to a kpc-scale ring or disc. It is also noted that the velocity gradients observed for these neutral gas components appear to differ with the velocity gradients observed from optical ionized emission lines. This apparent disagreement is discussed and attributed to the extinction of the optical emission from the actual centre of this source hence implying that optical ionized emission lines are only detected from regions with significantly different radii to those sampled by the observations presented here. We present MERLIN and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of the central region of the nearby radio galaxy 3C 305 and use them to study the gas and dust in this object. The MERLIN observations are of neutral hydrogen (H I) absorption against the strong non-thermal 20 cm continuum seen towards the central 4 kpc of 3C 305. Our ∼0.2 arcsec (160 pc) resolution observations show that the H I absorption is highly localized against the south-western radio-emission with column densities ∼1.9 × 10[SUP21] cm[SUP-2]. The absorption is broad (full width at half maximum, FWHM, of 145 ± 26 km s[SUP-1]) and redshifted by 130 km s[SUP-1] relative to the systemic velocity. The HST images in multiple optical and infrared filters (430 nm, 702 nm, [O III] 500.7 nm, [Fe II] 1.64 μm and K-band polarization) are presented. Evidence is seen for coincidence of the [Fe II] emission with the knot at the end of the radio jet, which is evidence for the presence of shocks. We compare the optical and radio images in order to investigate the relationship between the dust and neutral gas distributions. An unresolved (0.07 arcsec) nucleus is detected in H and K and its properties are consistent with a quasar reddened by AV > 4. We propose that the absorption arises in a region of neutral gas and dust. Its structure is complex but is broadly consistent with an inclined disc of gas and dust encircling, but not covering, the active galactic nucleus. A comparison of the neutral gas observations and previous emission-line observations suggests that both the neutral and ionized gas are undergoing galactic rotation towards the observer in the north-east and away from the observer in the south-west. We propose that the outflow giving rise to the radio emission has a component towards the observer in the northeast and away from the observer in the south-west. Abstract Neutral hydrogen has been studied on sub-arcsecond scales in two Seyfert galaxies, NGC 7469 and NGC 7674. The 1.4-GHz continuum emission from these sources agree with higher frequency measurements and shows linear, triple source in NGC 7674 and a compact source surrounded by a weak ring of radio emission in NGC 7469. In both of these sources we detect deep localized Hi absorption in front of a single continuum component. In the case of NGC 7674 the Hi absorption is only seen against the central component and has a peak optical depth of 0.21 ± 0.03 , a linewidth of 114 ± 7 km s[sup -1] and a heliocentric velocity of 8623 ± 5 km s[sup -1] . The integrated H i absorption against the central component corresponds to a column density of 5.0 ± 0.7 × 10[sup 21] atom cm[sup -2] . We interpret the lack of H i absorption against the east and west components ( τ < 0.07 and 0.06) as evidence that the H i is localized within the central few hundred pc, similar to the H i observed against the nucleus of NGC 4151, and has an upper mass limit of ∼4 × 10[sup 5] M[sub ⊙] . We speculate that this H i may be associated with a dusty torus. Giant Meterwavelength Radio Telescope (GMRT) results show extended emission and give a rest velocity of 8699 ± 20 km s[sup -1] . The Hi absorption against NGC 7469 shows a single deep feature against the strong central component. The line has a peak optical depth 0.25, a linewidth of 65 ± 6 km s[sup -1] and a heliocentric velocity of 4843 ± 5 km s[sup -1] . The integrated column density is 3.6 ± 0.4 × 10[sup 21] atom cm[sup -2] . Unfortunately the other components in NGC 7469 are too weak to set significant limits to the H i optical depth, and hence, unlike NGC 7674, it is not possible to constrain the size of the absorbing gas. What determines the nuclear radio emission in local galaxies? To address this question, we combine optical [O  iii ] line emission, robust black hole (BH) mass estimates, and high-resolution e- MERLIN 1.5-GHz data, from the LeMMINGs survey, of a statistically complete sample of 280 nearby optically active (LINER and Seyfert) and inactive [H  ii and absorption line galaxies (ALGs)] galaxies. Using [O  iii ] luminosity (⁠|$L_{\rm [O\, \small {III}]}$|⁠) as a proxy for the accretion power, local galaxies follow distinct sequences in the optical–radio planes of BH activity, which suggest different origins of the nuclear radio emission for the optical classes. The 1.5-GHz radio luminosity of their parsec-scale cores (L core) is found to scale with BH mass (M BH) and [O  iii ] luminosity. Below M BH ∼ 106.5 M⊙, stellar processes from non-jetted H  ii galaxies dominate with |$L_{\rm core} \propto M_{\rm BH}^{0.61\pm 0.33}$| and |$L_{\rm core} \propto L_{\rm [O\, \small {III}]}^{0.79\pm 0.30}$|⁠. Above M BH ∼ 106.5 M⊙, accretion-driven processes dominate with |$L_{\rm core} \propto M_{\rm BH}^{1.5-1.65}$| and |$L_{\rm core} \propto L_{\rm [O\, \small {III}]}^{0.99-1.31}$| for active galaxies: radio-quiet/loud LINERs, Seyferts, and jetted H  ii galaxies always display (although low) signatures of radio-emitting BH activity, with |$L_{\rm 1.5\, GHz}\gtrsim 10^{19.8}$| W Hz−1 and M BH ≳ 107 M⊙, on a broad range of Eddington-scaled accretion rates (⁠|$\dot{m}$|⁠). Radio-quiet and radio-loud LINERs are powered by low- |$\dot{m}$| discs launching sub-relativistic and relativistic jets, respectively. Low-power slow jets and disc/corona winds from moderately high to high- |$\dot{m}$| discs account for the compact and edge-brightened jets of Seyferts, respectively. Jetted H  ii galaxies may host weakly active BHs. Fuel-starved BHs and recurrent activity account for ALG properties. Deep radio surveys of extragalactic legacy fields trace a large range of spatial and brightness temperature sensitivity scales, and therefore have differing biases to radio-emitting physical components within galaxies. This is particularly true of radio surveys performed at |$\lesssim 1 \ \mathrm{arcsec}$| angular resolutions, and so robust comparisons are necessary to better understand the biases present in each survey. We present a multiresolution and multiwavelength analysis of the sources detected in a new Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) survey of the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-North field. For the 24 VLBA-selected sources described in Paper I, we augment the VLBA data with EVN data, and ∼0.1–1 arcsec angular resolution data provided by Very Large Array (VLA) and enhanced-Multi Element Remotely Linked Interferometry Network. This sample includes new active galactic nuclei (AGN) detected in this field, thanks to a new source extraction technique that adopts priors from ancillary multiwavelength data. The high brightness temperatures of these sources (TB ≳ 106 K) confirm AGN cores, that would often be missed or ambiguous in lower-resolution radio data of the same sources. Furthermore, only 15 sources are identified as 'radiative' AGN based on available X-ray and infrared constraints. By combining VLA and VLBA measurements, we find evidence that the majority of the extended radio emission is also AGN dominated, with only three sources with evidence for extended potentially star formation-dominated radio emission. We demonstrate the importance of wide-field multiresolution (arcsecond–milliarcsecond) coverage of the faint radio source population, for a complete picture of the multiscale processes within these galaxies. V959 Mon (Nova Mon 2012) was first detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope in June 2012, as a transient gamma-ray source. Subsequent optical observations showed that this gamma-ray emission was due to a classical nova explosion. Multifrequency observations of V959 Mon with the Very Large Array (VLA) between 2012 June and September revealed dramatic brightening, and a spectrum that steepened with increasing frequency. High-resolution radio images of V959 Mon using e-MERLIN are presented here, at six epochs between 2012 September and 2014 February that show morphological evolution of the source. While early e-MERLIN observations of V959 Mon showan east-west elongation in the ejecta morphology, subsequent observations suggest that the ejecta become elongated in the north-south direction. Our high-resolution observations of this surprising evolution in the structure of V959 Mon can assist us in further understanding the behaviour and morphology of nova ejecta. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present analysis of comprehensive radio observations of the black hole V404 Cyg during its 2015 outburst. These data represent the best ever coverage of jet production and particle acceleration from any black hole. We report for the first time a clear and near-linear flux–rms correlation in the radio flux densities. Investigation of individual flares reveals in nearly all cases the peak corresponds to the transition from optically thick to thin to synchrotron emission, but an extended phase of particle acceleration is required in contrast to simple impulsive injection models. The largest radio flare is preceded by a phase of optical oscillations and followed one day later by a smaller but optically thin flare, likely due to ejecta interacting with the interstellar medium. Comparing the radio emission to contemporaneous X-ray and optical data, we find that the X-ray and radio measurements are correlated on all time-scales from seconds to one day. Correlation with the optical flux densities is weak at short time-scales, but becomes significant on time-scales greater than a few hours. We evaluate the physical conditions (size, magnetic field, and internal energy) associated with 86 individual radio flares, which in turn allows us to place a lower limit on the kinetic feedback over the 15 d of intense activity. If this energy was deposited locally to the source, as implied by the failure to detect jets on angular scales larger than milliarcsec, then we predict that a nova-like shell could have been formed. We present high-resolution e-Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network radio continuum maps of the dwarf irregular galaxy IC 10 at 1.5 and 5 GHz. We detect 11 compact sources at 1.5 GHz, five of which have complementary detections at 5 GHz. We classify three extended sources as compact HII regions within IC 10, five sources as contaminating background galaxies and identify three sources that require additional observations to classify. We do not expect that any of these three sources are supernova remnants as they will likely be resolved out at the assumed distance of IC 10 (0.7 Mpc). We correct integrated flux densities of IC 10 from the literature for contamination by unrelated background sources and obtain updated flux density measurements of 354±11 mJy at 1.5 GHz and 199 ± 9 mJy at 4.85 GHz. The background contamination does not contribute significantly to the overall radio emission from IC 10, so previous analysis concerning its integrated radio properties remains valid. We report on a search for persistent radio emission from the one-off fast radio burst (FRB) 20190714A, as well as from two repeating FRBs, 20190711A and 20171019A, using the MeerKAT radio telescope. For FRB 20171019A, we also conducted simultaneous observations with the High-Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in very high-energy gamma rays and searched for signals in the ultraviolet, optical, and X-ray bands. For this FRB, we obtain a UV flux upper limit of |$1.39 \times 10^{-16}~{\rm erg\, cm^{-2}\, s^{-1}}$| Å−1, X-ray limit of |$\sim 6.6 \times 10^{-14}~{\rm erg\, cm^{-2}\, s^{-1}}$| and a limit on the very high energy gamma-ray flux |$\Phi (E\gt 120\, {\rm GeV}) \lt 1.7\times 10^{-12}\, \mathrm{erg\, cm^{-2}\, s^{-1}}$|⁠. We obtain a radio upper limit of ∼15  |$\mu$| Jy beam−1 for persistent emission at the locations of both FRBs 20190711A and 20171019A with MeerKAT. However, we detected an almost unresolved (ratio of integrated flux to peak flux is ∼1.7 beam) radio emission, where the synthesized beam size was ∼ 8 arcsec size with a peak brightness of |$\sim 53\, \mu$| Jy beam−1 at MeerKAT and |$\sim 86\, \mu$| Jy beam−1 at e-MERLIN, possibly associated with FRB 20190714A at z  = 0.2365. This represents the first detection of persistent continuum radio emission potentially associated with a (as-yet) non-repeating FRB. If the association is confirmed, one of the strongest remaining distinction between repeaters and non-repeaters would no longer be applicable. A parallel search for repeat bursts from these FRBs revealed no new detections down to a fluence of 0.08 Jy ms for a 1 ms duration burst. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

All 280 of the statistically complete Palomar sample of nearby (<120 Mpc) galaxies δ > 20° have been observed at 1.5 GHz as part of the LeMMINGs e -MERLIN legacy survey. Here, we present Chandra X-ray observations of the nuclei of 213 of these galaxies, including a statistically complete sub-set of 113 galaxies in the declination range 40° <δ < 65°. We observed galaxies of all optical spectral types, including 'active' galaxies [e.g. low-ionization nuclear emission line regions (LINERs) and Seyferts] and 'inactive' galaxies like |${\rm H\, \small {II}}$| galaxies and absorption line galaxies (ALG). The X-ray flux limit of our survey is 1.65 × 10−14 erg s−1 cm−2 (0.3−10 keV). We detect X-ray emission coincident within 2 arcsec of the nucleus in 150/213 galaxies, including 13/14 Seyferts, 68/77 LINERs, 13/22 ALGs and 56/100 |${\rm H\, \small {II}}$| galaxies, but cannot completely rule out contamination from non-AGN processes in sources with nuclear luminosities |$\lesssim 10^{39}$|  erg s−1. We construct an X-ray Luminosity function (XLF) and find that the local galaxy XLF, when including all active galactic nucleus (AGN) types, can be represented as a single power law of slope −0.54 ± 0.06. The Eddington ratio of the Seyferts is usually 2−4 decades higher than that of the LINERs, ALGs, and |${\rm H\, \small {II}}$| galaxies, which are mostly detected with Eddington ratios |$\lesssim 10^{-3}$|⁠. Using [ |${\rm O\, \small {III}}$| ] line measurements and black hole masses from the literature, we show that LINERs, |${\rm H\, \small {II}}$| galaxies and ALGs follow similar correlations to low luminosities, suggesting that some 'inactive' galaxies may harbour AGN. This paper presents the results of the 2009–2010 monitoring sessions of the starburst galaxy M82, obtained with the Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) at 5 GHz and e-MERLIN at 6 GHz. Combining several 5 GHz MERLIN epochs to form a map with 33.0 μJy bm−1 noise level, 52 discrete sources, mostly supernova remnants and H ii regions, are identified. These include three objects which were not detected in the 2002 5 GHz MERLIN monitoring session: supernova SN2008iz, the transient source 43.78+59.3, and a new supernova remnant shell. Flux density variations, in the long (1981 to 2010), medium (2002 to 2010) and short (2009 to 2010) term are investigated. We find that flux densities of supernova remnants (SNRs) in M82 stay constant in most of the sample (∼95 per cent), although the distributions of flux density variations show an offset from zero. This is consistent with a slight statistical reduction in flux density of the source distribution. In addition, aside from SN2008iz and the well-known variable source 41.95+57.5, two sources display tentative evidence for short- and medium-term variations over the period 2009–2010. These sources are amongst the most compact SNR in M82. These flux density variations could be due to changes in the circumstellar and interstellar medium in which the shocks travel. Using the Very Large Array, a series of high-velocity-resolution observations have been made of the M82 starburst at 1.6 GHz. These observations follow up on previous studies of the main line OH maser emission in the central kiloparsec of this starburst region, but with far greater velocity resolution, showing significant velocity structure in some of the maser spots for the first time. A total of 13 masers were detected, including all but one of the previously known sources. While some of these masers are still unresolved in velocity, these new results clearly show velocity structure in spectra from several of the maser regions. Position–velocity plots show good agreement with the distribution of H i including interesting velocity structure on the blueward feature in the west of the starburst which traces the velocity distribution seen in the ionized gas. We carry out an exploratory weak gravitational lensing analysis on a combined Very Large Array and Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network radio data set: a deep ( rms noise) 1.4 GHz image of the Hubble Deep Field-North. We measure the shear estimator distribution at this radio sensitivity for the first time, finding a similar distribution to that of optical shear estimators for Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys data in this field. We examine the residual systematics in shear estimation for the radio data and give cosmological constraints from radio–optical shear cross-correlation functions. We emphasize the utility of cross-correlating shear estimators from radio and optical data in order to reduce the impact of systematics. Unexpectedly, we find no evidence of correlation between optical and radio intrinsic ellipticities of matched objects; this result improves the properties of optical–radio lensing cross-correlations. We explore the ellipticity distribution of the radio counterparts to optical sources statistically, confirming the lack of correlation; as a result, we suggest a connected statistical approach to radio shear measurements. We identify eight radio sources undetected at 850 μm but robustly detected at 70 μm, confirming that they represent ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) with hotter dust temperatures than submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) at similar luminosities and redshifts. These galaxies share many properties with SMGs: ultraviolet spectra consistent with starbursts, high stellar masses and radio luminosities. We can attribute their radio emission to star formation since high-resolution Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) radio maps show extended emission regions (with characteristic radii of 2–3 kpc), which are unlikely to be generated by active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity. These observations provide the first direct confirmation of hot, dusty ULIRGs which are missed by current submillimetre surveys. They have significant implications for future observations from the Herschel Space Observatory and Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 (SCUBA2), which will select high-redshift luminous galaxies with less selection biases. We report Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network, Very Large Array, One-Centimetre Radio Array, Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), Effelsberg and Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope observations beginning 4.5 days after the discovery of RS Ophiuchi undergoing its 2006 recurrent nova outburst. Observations over the first 9 weeks are included, enabling us to follow spectral development throughout the three phases of the remnant development. We see dramatic brightening on days 4 to 7 at 6 GHz and an accompanying increase in other bands, particularly 1.46 GHz, consistent with transition from the initial ‘free expansion’ phase to the adiabatic expansion phase. This is complete by day 13 when the flux density at 5 GHz is apparently declining from an unexpectedly early maximum (compared with expectations from observations of the 1985 outburst). The flux density recovered to a second peak by approximately day 40, consistent with behaviour observed in 1985. At all times the spectral index is consistent with mixed non-thermal and thermal emission. The spectral indices are consistent with a non-thermal component at lower frequencies on all dates, and the spectral index changes show that the two components are clearly variable. The estimated extent of the emission at 22 GHz on day 59 is consistent with the extended east and west features seen at 1.7 GHz with the VLBA on day 63 being entirely non-thermal. We suggest a two-component model, consisting of a decelerating shell seen in mixed thermal and non-thermal emission plus faster bipolar ejecta generating the non-thermal emission, as seen in contemporaneous VLBA observations. Our estimated ejecta mass of is consistent with a white dwarf (WD) mass of . The results of an extremely deep, 8-d long observation of the central kpc of the nearby starburst galaxy M82 using Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) at 5 GHz are presented. The rms noise level in the naturally weighted image makes it the most sensitive high-resolution radio image of M82 made to date. Over 50 discrete sources are detected, the majority of which are supernova remnants, but with 13 identified as H ii regions. Sizes, flux densities and radio brightnesses are given for all of the detected sources, which are all well resolved with a majority showing shell or partial shell structures. Those sources within the sample which are supernova remnants have diameters ranging from 0.3 to 6.7 pc, with a mean size of 2.9 pc. From a comparison with previous MERLIN 5-GHz observations made in 1992 July, which gives a 9.75-yr timeline, it has been possible to measure the expansion velocities of 10 of the more compact sources, eight of which have not been measured before. Bcl-6 is a transcription factor that is normally expressed in germinal centre B cells. It is essential for the formation of germinal centres and the production of high-affinity antibodies. Transcriptional downregulation of Bcl-6 occurs on terminal differentiation to plasma cells. Bcl-6 is highly expressed in B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and, in a subset of cases of diffuse large cell lymphoma, the mechanism of Bcl-6 overexpression involves interruption of normal transcriptional controls. Transcriptional control of Bcl-6 is, therefore, important for normal antibody responses and lymphomagenesis, but little is known of the cis-acting control elements. This report focuses on a region of mouse/human sequence homology in the first intron of Bcl-6, which is a candidate site for such a control element. We demonstrate that poly-(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (Parp-1) binds in vitro and in vivo to specific sequences in this region. We further show that PARP inhibitors, and Parp-1 knockdown by siRNA induce Bcl-6 mRNA expression in Bcl-6 expressing cell lines. A study of the distribution of OH gas in the central region of the nearby active starburst galaxy M82 has confirmed two previously known bright masers and revealed several new main line masers. Three of these are seen only at 1665 MHz, one is detected only at 1667 MHz, while the rest are detected in both lines. Observations covering both the 1665- and 1667-MHz lines, conducted with both the Very Large Array and the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network, have been used to accurately measure the positions and velocities of these features. This has allowed a comparison with catalogued continuum features in the starburst such as H ii regions and supernova remnants (SNRs), as well as known water and satellite line OH masers. BCL-6 is a transcription factor essential for germinal centre B-cell development. The BCL-6 gene is involved in diffuse large-cell lymphoma and overexpressed in other types of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and in high-grade breast cancer. BCL-6 is a transcriptional repressor whose N-terminal POZ domain mediates protein–protein interactions to exert its effects. Reasoning that disruption of POZ domain-mediated interactions may be an effective route to antagonizing the effects of BCL-6 in lymphoma, we screened a library for peptide aptamers that specifically bind to BCL-6 POZ and not the POZ domains of related proteins and describe here the first of these reagents, Apt48. Apt48 binds BCL-6 POZ in a manner distinct from the transcriptional corepressor SMRT, yet was found to prevent BCL-6-mediated repression of a luciferase reporter gene. Apt48 also reproduced several previously validated effects of BCL-6 inhibition. Notably, expression of the differentiation markers CD69, Blimp-1 and cyclin D2 was increased in B-cell lines when Apt48 was expressed. We also show that expression of Apt48 restores cytokine-mediated growth arrest to BCL-6 overexpressing cells. We present an overview and description of the e -MERGE Survey (e -MERLIN Galaxy Evolution Survey) Data Release 1 (DR1), a large program of high-resolution 1.5-GHz radio observations of the GOODS-N field comprising ∼140 h of observations with enhanced-Multi-Element Remotely Linked Interferometer Network (e -MERLIN) and ∼40 h with the Very Large Array (VLA). We combine the long baselines of e -MERLIN (providing high angular resolution) with the relatively closely packed antennas of the VLA (providing excellent surface brightness sensitivity) to produce a deep 1.5-GHz radio survey with the sensitivity (⁠|${\sim}1.5\, \mu$|  Jy beam−1), angular resolution (0.2–0.7 arcsec) and field-of-view (∼15 × 15 arcmin2) to detect and spatially resolve star-forming galaxies and active galactic nucleus (AGN) at |$z$| ≳ 1. The goal of e -MERGE is to provide new constraints on the deep, sub-arcsecond radio sky which will be surveyed by SKA1-mid. In this initial publication, we discuss our data analysis techniques, including steps taken to model in-beam source variability over an ∼20-yr baseline and the development of new point spread function/primary beam models to seamlessly merge e -MERLIN and VLA data in the uv plane. We present early science results, including measurements of the luminosities and/or linear sizes of ∼500 galaxies selected at 1.5 GHz. In combination with deep Hubble Space Telescope observations, we measure a mean radio-to-optical size ratio of r e-MERGE/ r HST ∼ 1.02 ± 0.03, suggesting that in most high-redshift galaxies, the ∼GHz continuum emission traces the stellar light seen in optical imaging. High-resolution (0.​​″03–0.​​″09 (9–26 pc)) ALMA (100–350 GHz (λ3 to 0.8 mm)) and (0.​​″04 (11 pc)) VLA 45 GHz measurements have been used to image continuum and spectral line emission from the inner (100 pc) region of the nearby infrared luminous galaxy IC 860. We detect compact (r ∼ 10 pc), luminous, 3 to 0.8 mm continuum emission in the core of IC 860, with brightness temperatures TB >  160 K. The 45 GHz continuum is equally compact but significantly fainter in flux. We suggest that the 3 to 0.8 mm continuum emerges from hot dust with radius r ∼ 8 pc and temperature Td ∼ 280 K, and that it is opaque at millimetre wavelengths, implying a very large H2 column density N(H2)≳1026 cm−2. Vibrationally excited lines of HCN ν2 = 1f J = 4 − 3 and 3–2 (HCN-VIB) are seen in emission and spatially resolved on scales of 40–50 pc. The line-to-continuum ratio drops towards the inner r = 4 pc, resulting in a ring-like morphology. This may be due to high opacities and matching HCN-VIB excitation- and continuum temperatures. The HCN-VIB emission reveals a north–south nuclear velocity gradient with projected rotation velocities of ν = 100 km s−1 at r = 10 pc. The brightest emission is oriented perpendicular to the velocity gradient, with a peak HCN-VIB 3–2 TB of 115 K (above the continuum). Vibrational ground-state lines of HCN 3–2 and 4–3, HC15N 4–3, HCO+ 3–2 and 4–3, and CS 7–6 show complex line absorption and emission features towards the dusty nucleus. Redshifted, reversed P-Cygni profiles are seen for HCN and HCO+ consistent with gas inflow with νin ≲ 50 km s−1. Foreground absorption structures outline the flow, and can be traced from the north-east into the nucleus. In contrast, CS 7–6 has blueshifted line profiles with line wings extending out to −180 km s−1. We suggest that a dense and slow outflow is hidden behind a foreground layer of obscuring, inflowing gas. The centre of IC 860 is in a phase of rapid evolution where an inflow is building up a massive nuclear column density of gas and dust that feeds star formation and/or AGN activity. The slow, dense outflow may be signaling the onset of feedback. The inner, r = 10 pc, IR luminosity may be powered by an AGN or a compact starburst, which then would likely require a top-heavy initial mass function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The binary neutron star merger event GW170817 was detected through both electromagnetic radiation and gravitational waves. Its afterglow emission may have been produced by either a narrow relativistic jet or an isotropic outflow. High-spatial-resolution measurements of the source size and displacement can discriminate between these scenarios. We present very-long-baseline interferometry observations, performed 207.4 days after the merger by using a global network of 32 radio telescopes. The apparent source size is constrained to be smaller than 2.5 milli-arc seconds at the 90% confidence level. This excludes the isotropic outflow scenario, which would have produced a larger apparent size, indicating that GW170817 produced a structured relativistic jet. Context. The occurrence of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is critical to our understanding of galaxy evolution and formation. Radio observations provide a crucial, dust-independent tool to study the role of AGN. However, conventional radio surveys of deep fields ordinarily have arc-second scale resolutions often insufficient to reliably separate radio emission in distant galaxies originating from star-formation and AGN-related activity. Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) can offer a solution by identifying only the most compact radio emitting regions in galaxies at cosmological distances where the high brightness temperatures (in excess of 105 K) can only be reliably attributed to AGN activity. Aims. We present the first in a series of papers exploring the faint compact radio population using a new wide-field VLBI survey of the GOODS-N field. This will expand upon previous surveys, permitting the characterisation of the faint, compact radio source population in the GOODS-N field. The unparalleled sensitivity of the European VLBI Network (EVN) will probe a luminosity range rarely seen in deep wide-field VLBI observations, thus providing insights into the role of AGN to radio luminosities of the order 1022 WHz−1 across cosmic time. Methods. The newest VLBI techniques are used to completely cover an entire 7′̣5 radius area to milliarcsecond resolutions, while bright radio sources (S > 0.1 mJy) are targeted up to 25′ from the pointing centre. Multi-source self-calibration, and a primary beam model for the EVN array are used to correct for residual phase errors and primary beam attenuation respectively. Results. This paper presents the largest catalogue of VLBI detected sources in GOODS-N comprising of 31 compact radio sources across a redshift range of 0.11–3.44, almost three times more than previous VLBI surveys in this field. Context. Minor mergers are important processes contributing significantly to how galaxies evolve across the age of the Universe. Their impact on the growth of supermassive black holes and star formation is profound – about half of the star formation activity in the local Universe is the result of minor mergers. Aims. The detailed study of dense molecular gas in galaxies provides an important test of the validity of the relation between star formation rate and HCN luminosity on different galactic scales – from whole galaxies to giant molecular clouds in their molecular gas-rich centers. Methods. We use observations of HCN and HCO+ 1−0 with NOEMA and of CO3−2 with the SMA to study the properties of the dense molecular gas in the Medusa merger (NGC 4194) at 1′′ resolution. In particular, we compare the distribution of these dense gas tracers with CO2−1 high-resolution maps in the Medusa merger. To characterize gas properties, we calculate the brightness temperature ratios between the three tracers and use them in conjunction with a non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) radiative line transfer model. Results. The gas represented by HCN and HCO+ 1−0, and CO3−2 does not occupy the same structures as the less dense gas associated with the lower-J CO emission. Interestingly, the only emission from dense gas is detected in a 200 pc region within the “Eye of the Medusa”, an asymmetric 500 pc off-nuclear concentration of molecular gas. Surprisingly, no HCN or HCO+ is detected for the extended starburst of the Medusa merger. Additionally, there are only small amounts of HCN or HCO+ associated with the active galactic nucleus. The CO3−2/2−1 brightness temperature ratio inside “the Eye” is ~2.5 – the highest ratio found so far – implying optically thin CO emission. The CO2−1/HCN 1−0 (~9.8) and CO2−1/HCO+ 1−0 (~7.9) ratios show that the dense gas filling factor must be relatively high in the central region, consistent with the elevated CO3−1/2−1 ratio. Conclusions. The line ratios reveal an extreme, fragmented molecular cloud population inside the Eye with large bulk temperatures (T > 300 K) and high gas densities (n(H2) > 104 cm-3). This is very different from the cool, self-gravitating structures of giant molecular clouds normally found in the disks of galaxies. The Eye of the Medusa is found at an interface between a large-scale minor axis inflow and the central region of the Medusa. Hence, the extreme conditions inside the Eye may be the result of the radiative and mechanical feedback from a deeply embedded, young and massive super star cluster formed due to the gas pile-up at the intersection. Alternatively, shocks from the inflowing gas entering the central region of the Medusa may be strong enough to shock and fragment the gas. For both scenarios, however, it appears that the HCN and HCO+ dense gas tracers are not probing star formation, but instead a post-starburst and/or shocked ISM that is too hot and fragmented to form newstars. We measure the evolution of sizes for star-forming galaxies as seen in 1.4 GHz continuum radio for z  = 0–3. The measurements are based on combined VLA+MERLIN data of the Hubble Deep Field, and using a uv -stacking algorithm combined with model fitting to estimate the average sizes of galaxies. A sample of ∼1000 star-forming galaxies is selected from optical and near-infrared catalogues, with stellar masses M⊙ ≈ 1010–1011 M⊙ and photometric redshifts 0–3. The median sizes are parametrized for stellar mass M * = 5 × 1010 M⊙ as |$R_{\rm e} = A\times {}(H(z)/H(1.5))^{\alpha _z}$|⁠. We find that the median radio sizes evolve towards larger sizes at later times with α z  = −1.1 ± 0.6, and A (the median size at z ≈ 1.5) is found to be |$0. \!\!^{\prime\prime} 26\pm {}0. \!\!^{\prime\prime} 07$| or 2.3±0.6 kpc. The measured radio sizes are typically a factor of 2 smaller than those measure in the optical, and are also smaller than the typical H α sizes in the literature. This indicates that star formation, as traced by the radio continuum, is typically concentrated towards the centre of galaxies, for the sampled redshift range. Furthermore, the discrepancy of measured sizes from different tracers of star formation, indicates the need for models of size evolution to adopt a multiwavelength approach in the measurement of the sizes star-forming regions. We present the first data release of high-resolution (≤0.2 arcsec) 1.5-GHz radio images of 103 nearby galaxies from the Palomar sample, observed with the eMERLIN array, as part of the LeMMINGs survey. This sample includes galaxies which are active (low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions [LINER] and Seyfert) and quiescent (H  ii galaxies and absorption line galaxies, ALGs), which are reclassified based upon revised emission-line diagrams. We detect radio emission ≳0.2 mJy for 47/103 galaxies (22/34 for LINERS, 4/4 for Seyferts, 16/51 for H  ii galaxies, and 5/14 for ALGs) with radio sizes typically of ≲100 pc. We identify the radio core position within the radio structures for 41 sources. Half of the sample shows jetted morphologies. The remaining half shows single radio cores or complex morphologies. LINERs show radio structures more core-brightened than Seyferts. Radio luminosities of the sample range from 1032 to 1040 erg s−1: LINERs and H  ii galaxies show the highest and lowest radio powers, respectively, while ALGs and Seyferts have intermediate luminosities. We find that radio core luminosities correlate with black hole (BH) mass down to ∼107 M⊙, but a break emerges at lower masses. Using [O  iii ] line luminosity as a proxy for the accretion luminosity, active nuclei and jetted H  ii galaxies follow an optical Fundamental Plane of BH activity, suggesting a common disc–jet relationship. In conclusion, LINER nuclei are the scaled-down version of FR I radio galaxies; Seyferts show less collimated jets; H  ii galaxies may host weak active BHs and/or nuclear star-forming cores; and recurrent BH activity may account for ALG properties. We studied the nearby, interacting galaxy NGC 5195 (M 51b) in the radio, optical and X-ray bands. We mapped the extended, low-surface-brightness features of its radio-continuum emission; determined the energy content of its complex structure of shock-ionized gas; constrained the current activity level of its supermassive nuclear black hole. In particular, we combined data from the European Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network (∼1-pc scale), from our new e-MERLIN observations (∼10-pc scale), and from the Very Large Array (∼100–1000-pc scale), to obtain a global picture of energy injection in this galaxy. We put an upper limit to the luminosity of the (undetected) flat-spectrum radio core. We find steep-spectrum, extended emission within 10 pc of the nuclear position, consistent with optically thin synchrotron emission from nuclear star formation or from an outflow powered by an active galactic nucleus (AGN). A linear spur of radio emission juts out of the nuclear source towards the kpc-scale arcs (detected in radio, Hα and X-ray bands). From the size, shock velocity, and Balmer line luminosity of the kpc-scale bubble, we estimate that it was inflated by a long-term-average mechanical power ∼3–6 × 1041 erg s−1 over the last 3–6 Myr. This is an order of magnitude more power than can be provided by the current level of star formation, and by the current accretion power of the supermassive black hole. We argue that a jet-inflated bubble scenario associated with previous episodes of AGN activity is the most likely explanation for the kpc-scale structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a deep survey of the Super-Cluster Assisted Shear Survey (SuperCLASS) supercluster – a region of sky known to contain five Abell clusters at redshift z ∼ 0.2 – performed using the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager (AMI) Large Array (LA) at 15.5 GHz. Our survey covers an area of approximately 0.9 deg2.We achieve a nominal sensitivity of 32.0 μJy beam−1 towards the field centre, finding 80 sources above a 5σ threshold. We derive the radio colour– colour distribution for sources common to three surveys that cover the field and identify three sources with strongly curved spectra – a high-frequency-peaked source and two GHz-peakedspectrum sources. The differential source count (i) agrees well with previous deep radio source counts, (ii) exhibits no evidence of an emerging population of star-forming galaxies, down to a limit of 0.24 mJy, and (iii) disagrees with some models of the 15 GHz source population. However, our source count is in agreement with recent work that provides an analytical correction to the source count from the Square Kilometre Array Design Study (SKADS) Simulated Sky, supporting the suggestion that this discrepancy is caused by an abundance of flat-spectrum galaxy cores as yet not included in source population models. We present high-sensitivity eMERLIN radio images of the Seyfert galaxy NGC4151 at 1.51 GHz. We compare the new eMERLIN images to those from archival MERLIN observations in 1993 to determine the change in jet morphology in the 22 yr between observations. We report an increase by almost a factor of 2 in the peak flux density of the central core component, C4, thought to host the black hole, but a probable decrease in some other components, possibly due to adiabatic expansion. The core flux increase indicates an active galactic nucleus (AGN) that is currently active and feeding the jet. We detect no significant motion in 22 yr between C4 and the component C3, which is unresolved in the eMERLIN image. We present a spectral index image made within the 512MHz band of the 1.51 GHz observations. The spectrum of the core, C4, is flatter than that of other components further out in the jet. We use HST emission-line images (H α, [OIII] and [O II]) to study the connection between the jet and the emission-line region. Based on the changing emission-line ratios away from the core and comparison with the eMERLIN radio jet, we conclude that photoionization from the central AGN is responsible for the observed emission-line properties further than 4 arcsec (360 pc) from the core, C4. Within this region, a body of evidence (radio-line co-spatiality, low [O III]/H α and estimated fast shocks) suggests additional ionization from the jet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We use Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of H30α (231.90 GHz) emission from the low-metallicity dwarf galaxy NGC5253 to measure the star formation rate (SFR) within the galaxy and to test the reliability of SFRs derived from other commonly used metrics. The H30α emission, which originates mainly from the central starburst, yields a photoionizing photon production rate of (1.9 ± 0.3) × 1052 s-1 and an SFR of 0.087 ± 0.013M☉ yr-1 based on conversions that account for the low metallicity of the galaxy and for stellar rotation. Among the other star formation metrics we examined, the SFR calculated from the total infrared flux was statistically equivalent to the values from the H30α data. The SFR based on a previously published version of the Hα flux that was extinction corrected using Paα and Paβ lines was lower than but also statistically similar to the H30α value. The mid-infrared (22 μm) flux density and the composite star formation tracer based on Hα and mid-infrared emission give SFRs that were significantly higher because the dust emission appears unusually hot compared to typical spiral galaxies. Conversely, the 70 and 160 μm flux densities yielded SFRs lower than the H30α value, although the SFRs from the 70 μm and H30α data were within 1σ-2σ of each other. While further analysis on a broader range of galaxies is needed, these results are instructive of the best and worst methods to use when measuring SFR in low-metallicity dwarf galaxies like NGC5253. We present new observations of the GOODS-N field obtained at 5.5 GHz with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. The central region of the field was imaged to a median rms of 3 μJy beam-1 with a resolution of 0.5 arcsec. From a 14-arcmin diameter region, we extracted a sample of 94 radio sources with signal-to-noise ratio greater than 5. Near-IR identifications are available for about ~88 per cent of the radio sources. We used different multiband diagnostics to separate active galactic nuclei (AGNs), both radiatively efficient and inefficient, from starforming galaxies. From our analysis, we find that about 80 per cent of our radio-selected sample is AGN dominated, with the fraction rising to 92 per cent when considering only the radio sources with redshift >1.5. This large fraction of AGN-dominated radio sources at very low flux densities (the median flux density at 5.5 GHz is 42 μJy), where star-forming galaxies are expected to dominate, is somewhat surprising and at odds with other results. Our interpretation is that both the frequency and angular resolution of our radio observations strongly select against radio sources whose brightness distribution is diffuse on a scale of several kpc. Indeed, we find that the median angular sizes of the AGN-dominated sources is around 0.2,.0.3 arcsec against 0.8 arcsec for star-forming galaxies. This highlights the key role that high frequency radio observations can play in pinpointing AGN-driven radio emission at μJy levels. This work is part of the eMERGE legacy project. IC 883 is a luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) classified as a starburst-active galactic nucleus (AGN) composite. In a previous study, we detected a low-luminosity AGN (LLAGN) radio candidate. Here, we report on our radio follow-up at three frequencies that provides direct and unequivocal evidence of the AGN activity in IC 883. Our analysis of archival X-ray data, together with the detection of a transient radio source with luminosity typical of bright supernovae, gives further evidence of the ongoing star formation activity, which dominates the energetics of the system. At sub-parsec scales, the radio nucleus has a core-jet morphology with the jet being a newly ejected component showing a subluminal proper motion of 0.6-1 c. The AGN contributes less than 2 per cent of the total IR luminosity of the system. The corresponding Eddington factor is ~10-3, suggesting this is a low-accretion rate engine, as often found in LLAGNs. However, its high bolometric luminosity (~1044 erg s-1) agrees better with a normal AGN. This apparent discrepancy may just be an indication of the transition nature of the nucleus from a system dominated by star formation, to an AGN-dominated system. The nucleus has a strongly inverted spectrum and a turnover at ~4.4 GHz, thus qualifying as a candidate for the least luminous (L5.0 GHz ~ 6.3 ⨰ 1028 erg s-1 Hz-1) and one of the youngest (~3 ⨰ 103 yr) gigahertz-peaked spectrum (GPS) sources. If the GPS origin for the IC 883 nucleus is confirmed, then advanced mergers in the LIRG category are potentially key environments to unveil the evolution of GPS sources into more powerful radio galaxies. Optical observations presented by Milisavljevic et al. demonstrated that SN 2014C metamorphosed from a stripped-envelope Type Ib SN into a strongly interacting Type IIn SN within 1 yr. The AMI light curve clearly shows two distinct radio peaks, the second being a factor of 4 times more luminous than the first peak. This double bump morphology indicates two distinct phases of mass-loss from the progenitor star with the transition between density regimes occurring at 100-200 d. This reinforces the interpretation that SN 2014C exploded in a low-density region before encountering a dense hydrogen-rich shell of circumstellar material that was likely ejected by the progenitor prior to the explosion. The AMI flux measurements of the first light-curve bump are the only reported observations taken within ∼50 to ∼125 d post-explosion, before the blast-wave encountered the hydrogen shell. Simplistic synchrotron self-absorption and free-free absorption modelling suggest that some physical properties of SN 2014C are consistent with the properties of other Type Ibc and IIn SNe. However, our single frequency data does not allow us to distinguish between these two models, which implies that they are likely too simplistic to describe the complex environment surrounding this event. We present observations made with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), the Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) and the Giant Metre-Wave Telescope of the radio source within the galaxy WISE J071634.59-190039.2, claimed to be host of FRB 150418 by Keane et al. We have established a common flux density scale between the ATCA and JVLA observations, the main result of which is to increase the flux densities obtained by Keane et al. At a frequency of 5.5 GHz, the source has a mean flux density of 140 µJy and is variable on short time-scales with a modulation index of 0.36. Statistical analysis of the flux densities shows that the variations seen are consistent with the refractive interstellar scintillation of the weak active galactic nucleus at the centre of the galaxy. It may therefore be the case that the fast radio burst (FRB) and the galaxy are not associated. However, taking into account the rarity of highly variable sources in the radio sky, and our lack of knowledge of the progenitors of FRBs as a class, the association between WISE J071634.59-190039.2 and FRB 150418 remains a possibility. We present the results of 325 MHz Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope observations of a supercluster field, known to contain five Abell clusters at redshift z ~ 0.2. We achieve a nominal sensitivity of 34 μJy beam-1 towards the phase centre. We compile a catalogue of 3257 sources with flux densities in the range 183μJy-1.5Jy within the entire ~6.5 deg² field of view. Subsequently, we use available survey data at other frequencies to derive the spectral index distribution for a sub-sample of these sources, recovering two distinct populations - a dominant population which exhibit spectral index trends typical of steep-spectrum synchrotron emission, and a smaller population of sources with typically flat or rising spectra. We identify a number of sources with ultrasteep spectra or rising spectra for further analysis, finding two candidate high-redshift radio galaxies and three gigahertz-peaked-spectrum radio sources. Finally, we derive the Euclidean-normalized differential source counts using the catalogue compiled in this work, for sources with flux densities in excess of 223 μJy. Our differential source counts are consistent with both previous observations at this frequency and models of the low-frequency source population. These represent the deepest source counts yet derived at 325 MHz. Our source counts exhibit the well-known flattening at mJy flux densities, consistent with an emerging population of star-forming galaxies; we also find marginal evidence of a downturn at flux densities below 308 μJy, a feature so far only seen at 1.4 GHz. We report the discovery of a gravitationally lensed hyperluminous infrared galaxy (intrinsic LIR ≈ 1015 Lʘ) with strong radio emission (intrinsic L1.4GHZ ≈ 1025 WHz-1) atz = 2.553. The source was identified in the citizen science project SPACE WARPS through the visual inspection of tens of thousands of iJKs colour composite images of luminous red galaxies (LRGs), groups and clusters of galaxies and quasars. Appearing as a partial Einstein ring (re ≈ 3 arcsec) around an LRG at z = 0.2, the galaxy is extremely bright in the sub-millimetre for a cosmological source, with the thermal dust emission approaching 1 Jy at peak. The redshift of the lensed galaxy is determined through the detection of the CO(3→2) molecular emission line with the Large Millimetre Telescope's Redshift Search Receiver and through [O III] and Ha line detections in the near-infrared from Subaru/Infrared Camera and Spectrograph. We have resolved the radio emission with high-resolution (30CMI-00 mas) eMERLIN L-band and Very Large Array C-band imaging. These observations are used in combination with the near-infrared imaging to construct a lens model, which indicates a lensing magnification of μ; → 10. The source reconstruction appears to support a radio morphology comprised of a compact (<250pc) core and more extended component, perhaps indicative of an active nucleus and jet or lobe.
