The sharpest optical images of the R136 cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud are presented, allowing us for the first time to resolve members of the central core, including R136a1, the most-massive star known. These data were taken using the Gemini speckle imager Zorro in medium-band filters with effective wavelengths similar to BVRI achieving angular resolutions between 30–40 mas. All stars previously known in the literature, having V < 16 mag within the central 2'' × 2'', were recovered. Visual companions (≥40 mas; 2000 au) were detected for the WN5h stars R136 a1 and a3. Photometry of the visual companion of a1 suggests it is of mid-O spectral type. Based on new photometric luminosities using the resolved Zorro imaging, the masses of the individual WN5h stars are estimated to be between 150 and 200 M⊙, lowering significantly the present-day masses of some of the most-massive stars known. These mass estimates are critical anchor points for establishing the stellar upper-mass function.

We present spectroscopic analysis of the luminous X-ray source Melnick 33Na (Mk 33Na, HSH95 16) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) 30 Doradus region (Tarantula Nebula), utilizing new time-series Very Large Telescope/Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph spectroscopy. We confirm Mk 33Na as a double-lined O-type spectroscopic binary with a mass ratio q = 0.63 ± 0.02, e = 0.33 ± 0.01, and orbital period of 18.3 ± 0.1 d, supporting the favoured period from X-ray observations obtained via the Tarantula – Revealed by X-rays survey. Disentangled spectra of each component provide spectral types of OC2.5 If* and O4 V for the primary and secondary, respectively. Unusually for an O supergiant the primary exhibits strong C IV 4658 emission and weak N V 4603-20, justifying the OC classification. Spectroscopic analysis favours extreme physical properties for the primary (Teff = 50 kK, log L/L⊙ = 6.15) with system components of M1 = 83 ± 19 M⊙ and M2 = 48 ± 11 M⊙ obtained from evolutionary models, which can be reconciled with results from our orbital analysis (e.g. M1sin 3i = 20.0 ± 1.2 M⊙) if the system inclination is ∼38° and it has an age of 0.9–1.6 Myr. This establishes Mk 33Na as one of the highest mass binary systems in the LMC, alongside other X-ray luminous early-type binaries Mk34 (WN5h+WN5h), R144 (WN5/6h+WN6/7h), and especially R139 (O6.5 Iafc + O6 Iaf).

Mass loss through stellar winds plays a dominant role in the evolution of massive stars. In particular the mass-loss rates of very massive stars (VMSs, $> 100\,M_{\odot}$) are highly uncertain. Such stars display Wolf-Rayet spectral morphologies (WNh) whilst on the main-sequence. Metal-poor VMSs are progenitors of gamma-ray bursts and pair instability supernovae. In this study we extended the widely used stellar wind theory by Castor, Abbott & Klein from the optically thin (O star) to the optically thick main-sequence (WNh) wind regime. In particular we modify the mass-loss rate formula in a way that we are able to explain the empirical mass-loss dependence on the Eddington parameter ($\Gamma_{\rm e}$). The new mass-loss recipe is suitable for incorporation into current stellar evolution models for massive and very massive stars. It makes verifiable predictions, namely how the mass-loss rate scales with metallicity and at which Eddington parameter the transition from optically thin O star to optically thick WNh star winds occurs. In the case of the star cluster R136 in the Large Magellanic Cloud we find in the optically thin wind regime $\dot{M} \propto \Gamma_{\rm e}^{3}$ while in the optically thick wind regime $\dot{M} \propto 1/ (1 - \Gamma_{\rm e})^{3.5}$. The transition from optically thin to optically thick winds occurs at $\Gamma_{\rm e, trans} \approx 0.47$. The transition mass-loss rate is $\log \dot{M}~(M_{\odot} \mathrm{yr}^{-1}) \approx -4.76 \pm 0.18$, which is in line with the prediction by Vink & Gr\"afener assuming a volume filling factor of $f_{\rm V} = 0.23_{-0.15}^{+0.40}$., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 9 pages, 5 figures

Here, we confirm Melnick 34, an X-ray bright star in the 30 Dor region of the Large Magellanic Cloud, as an SB2 binary comprising WN5h + WN5h components. We present orbital solutions using 26 epochs of VLT/UVES spectra and 22 epochs of archival Gemini/GMOS spectra. Radial velocity monitoring and automated template-fitting methods both reveal a similar high-eccentricity system with a mass ratio close to unity, and an orbital period in agreement with the 155.1 ± 1 d X-ray light-curve period previously derived by Pollock et al. Our favoured solution derived an eccentricity of 0.68 ± 0.02 and mass ratio of 0.92 ± 0.07, giving minimum masses of MAsin3(i) = 65 ± 7 M⊙ and MBsin3(i) = 60 ± 7 M⊙. Spectral modelling using WN5h templates with cmfgen reveals temperatures of T ∼ 53 kK for each component and luminosities of log(LA/L⊙) = 6.43 ± 0.08 and log(LB/L⊙) = 6.37 ± 0.08, from which BONNSAI evolutionary modelling gives masses of MA = 139+21−18 M⊙ and MB = 127+17−17 M⊙ and ages of ∼0.6 Myr. Spectroscopic and dynamic masses would agree if Mk34 has an inclination of i ∼ 50°, making Mk34 the most massive binary known and an excellent candidate for investigating the properties of colliding wind binaries. Within 2–3 Myr, both components of Mk34 are expected to evolve to stellar mass black holes, which, assuming the binary system survives, would make Mk34 a potential binary black hole merger progenitor and a gravitational wave source.

The angular resolution of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) and the excellent sensitivity of GRAVITY have led to the first detection of spatially resolved kinematics of high velocity atomic gas near an accreting super- massive black hole, revealing rotation on sub-parsec scales in the quasar 3C 273 at a distance of 550 Mpc. The observations can be explained as the result of circular orbits in a thick disc configuration around a 300 million solar mass black hole. Within an ongoing Large Programme, this capability will be used to study the kinematics of atomic gas and its relation to hot dust in a sample of quasars and Seyfert galaxies. We will measure a new radius-luminosity relation from spatially resolved data and test the current methods used to measure black hole mass in large surveys., Published in The Messenger vol. 178, pp. 20-24, December 2019.

Context. η Car is one of the most intriguing luminous blue variables in the Galaxy. Observations and models of the X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, and infrared emission suggest a central binary in a highly eccentric orbit with a 5.54 yr period residing in its core. 2D and 3D radiative transfer and hydrodynamic simulations predict a primary with a dense and slow stellar wind that interacts with the faster and lower density wind of the secondary. The wind-wind collision scenario suggests that the secondary’s wind penetrates the primary’s wind creating a low-density cavity in it, with dense walls where the two winds interact. However, the morphology of the cavity and its physical properties are not yet fully constrained.\ud \ud Aims. We aim to trace the inner ∼5–50 au structure of η Car’s wind-wind interaction, as seen through Brγ and, for the first time, through the He I 2s-2p line.\ud \ud Methods. We have used spectro-interferometric observations with the K-band beam-combiner GRAVITY at the VLTI. The analyses of the data include (i) parametrical model-fitting to the interferometric observables, (ii) a CMFGEN model of the source’s spectrum, and (iii) interferometric image reconstruction.\ud \ud Results. Our geometrical modeling of the continuum data allows us to estimate its FWHM angular size close to 2 mas and an elongation ratio ϵ = 1.06 ± 0.05 over a PA = 130° ± 20°. Our CMFGEN modeling of the spectrum helped us to confirm that the role of the secondary should be taken into account to properly reproduce the observed Brγ and He I lines. Chromatic images across the Brγ line reveal a southeast arc-like feature, possibly associated to the hot post-shocked winds flowing along the cavity wall. The images of the He I 2s-2p line served to constrain the 20 mas (∼50 au) structure of the line-emitting region. The observed morphology of He I suggests that the secondary is responsible for the ionized material that produces the line profile. Both the Brγ and the He I 2s-2p maps are consistent with previous hydrodynamical models of the colliding wind scenario. Future dedicated simulations together with an extensive interferometric campaign are necessary to refine our constraints on the wind and stellar parameters of the binary, which finally will help us predict the evolutionary path of η Car.

Characterization of the dynamics of massive star systems and the astrophysical properties of the interacting components are a prerequisite for understanding their formation and evolution. Optical interferometry at milliarcsecond resolution is a key observing technique for resolving high-mass multiple compact systems. Here, we report on Very Large Telescope Interferometer/GRAVITY, Magellan/Folded-port InfraRed Echellette, and MPG2.2 m/FEROS observations of the late-O/early-B type system HD 93206 A, which is a member of the massive cluster Collinder 228 in the Carina nebula complex. With a total mass of about $90\,{M}_{\odot }$, it is one of the most compact massive quadruple systems known. In addition to measuring the separation and position angle of the outer binary Aa–Ac, we observe Brγ and He i variability in phase with the orbital motion of the two inner binaries. From the differential phase (${{\rm{\Delta }}}_{\phi }$) analysis, we conclude that the Brγ emission arises from the interaction regions within the components of the individual binaries, which is consistent with previous models for the X-ray emission of the system based on wind–wind interaction. With an average 3σ deviation of ${{\rm{\Delta }}}_{\phi }\sim 15^\circ $, we establish an upper limit of p ~ 0.157 mas (0.35 au) for the size of the Brγ line-emitting region. Future interferometric observations with GRAVITY using the 8 m Unit Telescopes will allow us to constrain the line-emitting regions down to angular sizes of 20 μas (0.05 au at the distance of the Carina nebula).

Context. The Tarantula region in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) contains the richest population of spatially resolved massive O-type stars known so far. This unmatched sample offers an opportunity to test models describing their main-sequence evolution and mass-loss properties.\ud Aims. Using ground-based optical spectroscopy obtained in the framework of the VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey (VFTS), we aim to determine stellar, photospheric and wind properties of 72 presumably single O-type giants, bright giants and supergiants and to confront them with predictions of stellar evolution and of line-driven mass-loss theories.\ud Methods. We apply an automated method for quantitative spectroscopic analysis of O stars combining the non-LTE stellar atmosphere model fastwind with the genetic fitting algorithm pikaia to determine the following stellar properties: effective temperature, surface gravity, mass-loss rate, helium abundance, and projected rotational velocity. The latter has been constrained without taking into account the contribution from macro-turbulent motions to the line broadening.\ud Results. We present empirical effective temperature versus spectral subtype calibrations at LMC-metallicity for giants and supergiants. The calibration for giants shows a +1kK offset compared to similar Galactic calibrations; a shift of the same magnitude has been reported for dwarfs. The supergiant calibrations, though only based on a handful of stars, do not seem to indicate such an offset. The presence of a strong upturn at spectral type O3 and earlier can also not be confirmed by our data. In the spectroscopic and classical Hertzsprung-Russell diagrams, our sample O stars are found to occupy the region predicted to be the core hydrogen-burning phase by state-of-the-art models. For stars initially more massive than approximately 60 M⊙, the giant phase already appears relatively early on in the evolution; the supergiant phase develops later. Bright giants, however, are not systematically positioned between giants and supergiants at Minit ≳ 25 M⊙. At masses below 60 M⊙, the dwarf phase clearly precedes the giant and supergiant phases; however this behavior seems to break down at Minit ≲ 18 M⊙. Here, stars classified as late O III and II stars occupy the region where O9.5-9.7 V stars are expected, but where few such late O V stars are actually seen. Though we can not exclude that these stars represent a physically distinct group, this behavior may reflect an intricacy in the luminosity classification at late O spectral subtype. Indeed, on the basis of a secondary classification criterion, the relative strength of Si iv to He i absorption lines, these stars would have been assigned a luminosity class IV or V. Except for five stars, the helium abundance of our sample stars is in agreement with the initial LMC composition. This outcome is independent of their projected spin rates. The aforementioned five stars present moderate projected rotational velocities (i.e., νesini < 200kms-1) and hence do not agree with current predictions of rotational mixing in main-sequence stars. They may potentially reveal other physics not included in the models such as binary-interaction effects. Adopting theoretical results for the wind velocity law, we find modified wind momenta for LMC stars that are ~0.3 dex higher than earlier results. For stars brighter than 105 L⊙, that is, in the regime of strong stellar winds, the measured (unclumped) mass-loss rates could be considered to be in agreement with line-driven wind predictions if the clump volume filling factors were fV ~ 1/8 to 1/6.
