The increase in the quantity and variety of contaminants generated during routine airport infrastructure maintenance operations leads to a wider range of pollutants entering soil and surface waters through runoff, causing soil erosion and groundwater pollution. A significant developmental challenge is ensuring that airport infrastructure meets high-quality environmental management standards. It is crucial to have effective tools for monitoring and managing the volume and quality of stormwater produced within airports and nearby coastal areas. It is necessary to develop methodologies for determining a wide range of contaminants in airport stormwater samples and assessing their toxicity to improve the accuracy of environmental status assessments. This manuscript aims to showcase the latest advancements (2010–2024 update) in developing methodologies, including green analytical techniques, for detecting a wide range of pollutants in airport runoff waters and directly assessing the toxicity levels of airport stormwater effluent. An integrated chemical and ecotoxicological approach to assessing environmental pollution in airport areas can lead to precise environmental risk assessments and well-informed management decisions for sustainable airport operations. Furthermore, this critical review highlights the latest innovations in remediation techniques and various strategies to minimize airport waste. Water quality credit trading has been advanced as a cost‐effective means of achieving regulatory compliance. However, the volume of trading activity in operational programs is typically less than estimated by empirical analysis. The compliance behavior of Virginia Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4s) is studied in response to the Chesapeake Bay total maximum daily load (TMDL) to understand the circumstances in which trading is adopted, the extent to which trading is adopted, and the factors contributing to trading's use or nonuse. Results indicate that MS4s generally prefer to install their own pollutant control measures rather than trade. Many MS4s, however, rely on trade as a backup compliance option. MS4s favor bay compliance options that help meet other local management objectives (erosion control, infrastructure protection, and reductions toward local water quality objectives) and provide long term pollutant control benefits. Low cost term credits do not provide such benefits. For perpetual credits, MS4s use a variety of strategies to substantially reduce the cost differences between trade and nontrade compliance options. Bioinfiltration systems are an increasingly prevalent mechanism for urban stormwater mitigation. One major challenge for the sustainability of bioinfiltration systems is erosion and channelization due to high bed shear stresses developed during large storm events. Sedimentation within these systems could also impact their performance as fine sediment may clog pathways necessary for infiltration. Understanding the geomorphology, shear stress, and sediment flux in the system can help predict maintenance needs associated with erosion and deposition. The current study introduces a framework for addressing this problem by combining a sediment transport model, FaSTMECH, with the Green-Ampt infiltration model. A comparison of observed and predicted ponding depths shows very good agreement (median Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient = 0.93) and demonstrates the ability of this novel framework in predicting the hydraulics and morphology within a bioswale bioinfiltration system. The framework introduced in this study opens the door to understanding sediment transport dynamics within a bioswale, which has the potential to advance planning and design to minimize impacts due to excessive erosion or deposition within bioswale bioinfiltration systems. Concerns associated with forest biomass harvesting include increased erosion, the applicability of conventional forestry Best Management Practices (BMPs) for protecting water quality, and reduced woody debris retention for soil nutrients and cover. We regionally compared the data and results from three prior independent studies that estimated erosion, BMP implementation, and residual woody debris following biomass and conventional forest harvests in the Mountains, Piedmont, and Coastal Plain of Virginia. Estimated erosion was higher in the Mountains due to steep slopes and operational challenges. Mountain skid trails were particularly concerning, comprising only 8.47% of the total area but from 37.9 to 81.1% of the total site-wide estimated erosion. BMP implementation varied by region and harvest type, with biomass sites having better implementation than conventional sites, and conventional Mountain sites having lower implementation than other regions. Sufficient woody debris remained for BMPs on both harvest types in all regions, with conventional Mountain sites retaining twice that of Coastal Plain sites. BMPs reduced the estimated erosion on both site types suggesting increased implementation could reduce potential erosion in problematic areas. Therefore, proper BMP implementation should be ensured, particularly in Mountainous terrain, regardless of harvest type.

Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution is a severe problem in the U.S. and worldwide. Best management practices (BMPs) have been widely used to control stormwater and reduce NPS pollution. Previous research has shown that socio-economic factors affect households' adoption of BMPs, but few studies have quantitatively analyzed the spatio-temporal dynamics of household BMP adoption under different socio-economic conditions. In this paper, diverse regression approaches (linear, LASSO, support vector, random forest) were used on the ten-year data of household BMP adoption in socio-economically diverse areas of Washington, D.C., to model BMP adoption behaviors. The model with the best performance (random forest regression, R2 = 0.67, PBIAS = 7.2) was used to simulate spatio-temporal patterns of household BMP adoption in two nearby watersheds (Watts Branch watershed between Washington, D.C., and Maryland; Watershed 263 in Baltimore), each of which are characterized by different socio-economic (population density, median household income, renter rate, average area per household, etc.) and physical attributes (total area, percentage of canopy in residential area, average distance to nearest BMPs, etc.). The BMP adoption rate was considerably higher at the Watts Branch watershed (14 BMPs per 1000 housing units) than at Watershed 263 (4 BMPs per 1000 housing units) due to distinct differences in the watershed characteristics (lower renter rate and poverty rate; higher median household income, education level, and canopy rate in residential areas). This research shows that adoption behavior tends to cluster in urban areas across socio-economic boundaries and that targeted, community-specific social interventions are needed to reach the NPS control goal. Using the US EPA's Grants Reporting and Tracking System (GRTS), we test if completion of best management practices (BMPs) through the Clean Water Act Section (§)319 National Nonpoint Source Program was associated with a decreasing trend in total suspended solids (TSS) load (metric tons/year). The study area chosen had 21 completed projects in the Cuyahoga River watershed in northeastern Ohio from 2000 to 2018. The §319 projects ranged from dam removal, floodplain/wetland restoration to stormwater projects. There was an overall decreasing trend in TSS loads. We identified three phases of project implementation and completion, where phase 1 had ongoing projects, but none completed (2000–2004). The steepest decrease in loads, identified as phase 2 (2005–2011), was associated with completion of low-head dam modification and removal projects on the mainstem of the Cuyahoga River. A likely decreasing trend was associated with projects completed in the tributaries, such as natural channel design restoration and stormwater green infrastructure (phase 3). Pairing sediment reduction estimates from projects with the river's flow normalized TSS loading trend, we estimated that the §319 effort may account for a small fraction of the TSS load reduction. Other stream restoration projects (non-§319) have also been done in the Cuyahoga watershed by other organizations. However, trying to compile these other projects is challenging in larger watersheds having multiple municipalities, agencies, and nonprofits doing restoration without better coordinated record keeping and monitoring. When environmental mitigation requires individual adoption, engagement approaches centered on cost effectiveness and technological efficiency alone are often insufficient. Through focus groups with adopters and prospective adopters, this research identifies factors influencing homeowners’ willingness to adopt Innovative/Alternative (I/A) septic systems for nitrogen reduction. We apply concepts from technology adoption and behavior change models as a framework for illustrating the homeowner decision-making process around I/A adoption. The perceived needs to replace an old/failing septic system, comply with local regulations, and protect local water quality synergistically catalyzed adoption. Adoption was further influenced by the larger context within which it is taking place, perceived characteristics of I/A systems and the installation process, system aesthetics concerns, and homeowners’ attitudes and beliefs. Considering how these factors affect adoption could enable resource managers to design more targeted interventions to encourage adoption through behavior change strategies such as social marketing, and to improve how these systems are communicated. If I/A systems are to be used as a tool to achieve water quality goals, the considerations influencing homeowners’ willingness to install these systems will be critical to incentivizing voluntary adoption. Many of these factors are relevant to the adoption of other individual-level environmental management strategies, which are being increasingly deployed in response to complex, nonpoint source pollution issues.

Excess loading of nitrogen and phosphorus to river networks causes environmental harm, but reducing loads from large river basins is difficult and expensive. We developed a new tool, the River Basin Export Reduction Optimization Support Tool (RBEROST) to identify the least‐cost combinations of management practices that will reduce nutrient loading to target levels in downstream and mid‐network waterbodies. We demonstrate the utility of the tool in a case study in the Upper Connecticut River Basin in New England, USA. The total project cost of optimized lowest‐cost plans ranged from $18.0 million to $41.0 million per year over 15 years depending on user specifications. Plans include both point source and non‐point source management practices, and most costs are associated with urban stormwater practices. Adding a 2% margin of safety to loading targets improved the estimated probability of success from 37.5% to 99%. The large spatial scale of RBEROST, and the consideration of both point and non‐point source contributions of nutrients, make it well suited as an initial screening tool in watershed planning. Nitrate is one of the most complicated forms of nitrogen found in aquatic surface systems, which results in the eutrophication of the water. During the last few decades, due to agriculture and animal husbandry activities, as well as urban development, a significant amount of pollutants have accumulated in the Jajrood river in northern Iran. In this research, we simulated nitrate load in a rural watershed to assess the outlet stream's qualitative status and evaluate the influence of best management practices (BMPs). To accomplish this, we prepared, processed, and integrated different datasets, including land-use land-cover (LULC) maps, physiographic layers, and hydrological and agricultural datasets. In the modeling section, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to simulate nitrate load over 28 years (1991–2019). Additionally, the multi-objective optimization algorithm (MOPSO) was implemented to reduce the intended objective functions, including the number of best management practices and the nitrate concentration considering different scenarios. The calibration of the basin's discharge and nitrate indicated that the SWAT model performed well in simulating the catchment's streamflow (R2 = 0.71) and nitrate (R2 = 0.69). The recommended BMPs for reducing nutrient discharge from the basin are using vegetated filter strips on river banks and fertilizer reduction in agricultural activities. According to the results from this investigation, the integrated model demonstrates a strong ability to optimally determine the type, size, and location of BMPs in the watershed as long as the reduction criteria change. In a situation of water scarcity, the studies reported here could provide useful information for policymakers and planners to define water conservation policies and strategies. A new approach was presented to manage simultaneously reservoir outflow quantity and quality. Two strategies were used to control reservoir outflow quality: (1) reservoir inflow control with Best Management Practices (BMPs) in the watershed and (2) outflow management by reservoir operational strategy. Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was linked to a reservoir water quality simulation model (CE-QUAL-W2), the linked watershed-reservoir model was coupled with Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (MOPSO) to find the best set of decisions to optimize the reservoir outflow quality and quantity objectives. The approach was applied to Alavian reservoir and its watershed, in Iran, for a 6-year time horizon. The results show the proposed approach could reduce reservoir outflow phosphorus concentration while increasing downstream water supply. The implemented BMPs outperformed the reservoir operational strategy in terms of reservoir outflow quality reducing outflow phosphorus concentration up to 45% comparing with current conditions. Among the four applied BMPs, filter strips had more effect on reducing nutrient loads.

To reduce the potential threat of soil loss due to ephemeral gullies, it is crucial to adopt Best Management Practices (BMPs) that prevent damage to landscapes by reducing sediments load. The current research evaluated the impact of five BMPs, including cover crops, grassed waterways, no-till, conservation tillage, and riparian buffer strips for reduction of sediment load from sheet/rill, and ephemeral gully erosion in an agricultural watershed in Southern Ontario, Canada. The study aimed to automatically calibrate AnnAGNPS using genetic algorithm and the most sensitive parameters of the model identified using a combination of Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) and One-At-a-Time (OAT) approach. It also utilized the calibrated model to simulate the effectiveness of BMPs in reducing the average seasonal and annual sediment loads from both sources of erosion (sheet/rill, and ephemeral gully) to determine the most effective practices. Riparian buffer strips were consistently successful in decreasing average seasonal sediment load of sheet/rill erosion, with an average reduction efficiency of 72 % in Spring, 64 % in Summer, 65 % in Fall, and 76 % in Winter. In terms of reducing average seasonal sediment load from ephemeral gully erosion, grassed waterways proved to be the most effective BMPs. They showed efficiency of 90 % in Spring; 83 % in Summer; 79 % in Fall; and 75 % in Winter. Considering the average annual sediment load, riparian buffer strips were consistently successful in decreasing average annual sediment load of sheet/rill erosion, with 69% reduction efficiency. Similarly, grassed waterways were the most effective BMPs for reducing average annual sediment load of ephemeral gully erosion, with an efficiency of 81 %. Additionally, grassed waterways were found to be the most efficient BMPs for reducing average annual total sediment load with reduction efficiency of 71 %. These results demonstrate the importance of implementing effective BMPs to address ephemeral gully erosion in watersheds where ephemeral gullies are the main source of erosion. However, they have secondary impacts on nutrition production and ecosystem. This study develops a method to evaluate the cumulative environmental impacts of BMPs. It also introduces and calculates food's environmental footprint (FEF) for accounting the total environmental damages per nutrition production. Methods: This study combines the soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) for basin simulation with the indices of ReCiPe, a life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) method. By these means, the effectiveness of BMPs on pollution loads, production yields, and water footprints (WFs) are evaluated and converted as equivalent environmental damages. This method was verified in Zrebar Lake, western Iran. Here, water consumption, as WFs, and eutrophication are the main indices that are converted into equivalent health and ecological impairments. Two methods, entropy and environmental performance index (EPI), are used for weighting normalized endpoints in last step. Results: Results showed that using 25-50% less fertilizer and water for irrigation combined with vegetated filter strips reduce N and P pollution about 34-60% and 8-21%, respectively. These can decrease ecosystem damages by 5-9% and health risks by 7-14%. Here, freshwater eutrophication is a more critical damage in ecosystem. However, using less fertilizer adversely reduces total nutrition production by 1.7-3.7%. It means that BMPs can decline total ecological damages and health risks, which threatens nutrition production. FEF presents a tool to solve this dilemma about the sustainability of BMPs. Undeniably, climate-change-induced sea-level rise has served as a powerful driving force for the occurrence of coastal storms more severe than ever before. Low-lying metropolitan coastal areas, in particular, have become increasingly vulnerable to coastal flooding as a result of the rapid expansion of urbanization along flood-prone areas. Safeguarding coastal communities from the repercussions of flooding through the utilization of best management practices (BMPs) is one of the most effective ways of alleviating the situation. However, solely relying on inshore BMPs might not be the best possible approach when the storm event's intensity can be reduced before the storm reaches the shoreline through the installment of offshore BMPs. Moreover, many recent studies have confirmed the cost-effectiveness and usefulness of natural elements, especially when combined with engineering solutions. This paper assesses the overall suitability and effectiveness of various combinations of nature-based inshore and offshore BMPs for coastal flood mitigation of storms with different intensities with applications to the Southern Brooklyn area in New York City. Moreover, inevitable conditions stemming from climate variability and change have made the assumption of stationary recurrence of extreme events unreliable. Furthermore, historical events of remarkable impacts have not been considered differently in the attainment of the flood design values. Thus, as one of the main objectives of this study, and in order to consider both, a nonstationary partial frequency analysis is utilized, including the major historical storms jointly with the precipitation data in the study area to obtain 100-year flood design values. To achieve the goals of the study, first, the offshore simulation was carried out using the Delft3D hydrodynamic model, developed by Deltares, in order to find the water level hydrograph for the ungauged areas of interest, with and without offshore BMPs followed by the simulation of the flood events on the inland coastal area using gridded surface subsurface hydrologic analysis (GSSHA), a module of the watershed modeling system (WMS) developed by the USACE, to assess the effectiveness of inshore BMPs. The proposed scenarios are tested against Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene, and the 100-year flood hydrographs. The selection and execution of appropriate best management practices (BMPs) in critical areas of a watershed can effectively reduce sediment yield. Objectives of this research include developing a watershed-scale Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model for the Big Sunflower River Watershed (BSRW), identifying high sediment yield areas using calibrated and validated model, and assessing the effects of various BMPs. The efficiency of three BMPs, grassed waterways (GWW), vegetative filter strips (VFS), and grade stabilization structures (GSS), and their combinations in reducing sediment yield, were investigated. The model performed well for streamflow (P-factor = 0.72–0.87; R-factor = 0.74–1.27; R2 = 0.60–0.86; NSE = 0.60–0.86) and total suspended solids (TSS) (P-factor = 0.56–0.89; R-factor = 0.43–2.83; R2 = 0.62–0.91; NSE = 0.38–0.91) during calibration and validation. The simulation of individual BMPs revealed that GWW showed the highest sediment yield reduction (up to 44%), followed by VFS (up to 38%) and GSS (up to 7%). Two BMPs' combinations showed that GSS and GWW had the largest sediment yield reduction potential (up to 47%) while VFS and GSS had the lowest potential (up to 42%). Similarly, a combination of all three BMPs reduced the sediment yield up to 50%. Highway runoff is one of the most significant non-point sources of pollution for the terrestrial and aquatic environment with biological, physical, and chemical effects. Considering local characteristics, treatment practices, and determining factors are essential for highway runoff management. The aim of this paper is to survey the review of highway runoff management in Europe with emphasis on runoff characterization, treatment, and modeling approaches and identifying possible knowledge gaps exists based on our review. The results showed that highway runoff has spatiotemporal variation, which is the main factor in the regional selection of the best management practice (BMP). Also, recent studies have poorly deemed characterization of highway runoff in different climatic scenarios, performance assessment of the current BMPs, and uncertainty analysis in modeling approaches. Furthermore, economic and risk analysis, along with decision-making methods, provide an optimum plan for the design and operation of BMPs.

The calibration of the basin’s discharge and nitrate indicated that the SWAT model performed well in simulating the catchment’s streamflow (R2 = 0.71) and nitrate (R2 = 0.69). The recommended BMPs for reducing nutrient discharge from the basin are using vegetated filter strips on river banks and fertilizer reduction in agricultural activities. According to the results from this investigation, the integrated model demonstrates a strong ability to optimally determine the type, size, and location of BMPs in the watershed as long as the reduction criteria change. In a situation of water scarcity, the studies reported here could provide useful information for policymakers and planners to define water conservation policies and strategies.

Winter manure application contributes substantial nutrient loss during snowmelt and influences water quality. The goal of this study is to develop best management practices (BMPs) for winter manure management. We compared nutrient concentrations in snowmelt runoff from three dates of feedlot solid beef manure application (November, January, and March) at 18 tons ha-1 on untilled and fall-tilled plots. The manure was applied at a single rate. Sixteen 4 m² steel frames were installed in the fall to define individual plots. Treatments were randomly assigned so that each tillage area had two control plots, two that received manure during November, two in January, and two in March. Snowmelt runoff from each individual plot was collected in March and analyzed for runoff volume (RO), ammonium-nitrogen (NH4-N), nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N), total suspended solids (TSS), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), total phosphorus (TP), and total dissolved phosphorus (TDP). Snowmelt runoff concentrations and loads of NH4-N, TKN, TP, and TDP were significantly higher in runoff from manure application treatments compared to control. The concentration of NH4-N and loads of NH4-N and TDP were significantly (p = 0.05) greater (42%, 51%, and 47%, respectively) from untilled compared to fall-tilled plots. The November application significantly increased RO, NH4-N, and TDP concentrations and loads in the snowmelt runoff compared to January and March applications. Results showed that nutrient losses in snowmelt runoff were reduced from manure applications on snow compared to non-snow applications. The development of watershed models faces double pressure of data requirements and physical interpretation. The simulation of nonpoint source (NPS) pollution is an important application of watershed model, and the best management practices (BMPs) have attracted wide attention as the main control approach of NPS pollution. In this study, a new paradigm was proposed based on the integration of data-driven and mechanistic methods, taking BMP evaluation as an example. Specifically, comprehensive databases were constructed for filter and retention BMPs by collecting, classifying and analyzing published data. Twelve machine learning algorithms were employed for regression analysis between BMPs efficiency and their influencing factors, while the constructed equations were coupled with physical-based models. A case study was performed in a typical catchment of Chaohu Lake Watershed, China. The results demonstrated total interception area, soil type, and vegetation biomass had significant impacts on BMPs performances, while the multilayer perceptron regression (MLPR), K nearest neighbor regression (KNRD), and extremely randomized tree (ETR) methods had the best performances of nutrients removal. The study generated over ten thousand datasets using mechanistic processes, resulting in more efficient and interpretable BMPs evaluator. Compare to traditional methods, this new paradigm has shown advantages in the model application at the watershed scale, enhancing the BMPs evaluator with a higher level of interpretability by coupling the approach with mechanistic models. The vast number of chemicals potentially reaching aquatic environment pose a challenge in maintaining the quality of water resources. However, best management practices to improve water quality are typically focused on reducing nutrient transport without assessing how these practices may impact the occurrence of micropollutants. The potential for co-management of nutrients and organic micropollutants exists, but few studies have comprehensively evaluated the suite of contaminants associated with different water quality management practices (riparian zone restoration, stormwater management, etc.). Furthermore, most studies dealing with the determination of micropollutants in environmental samples include only a limited number of target analytes, leaving many contaminants undetected. To address this limitation, there has been a gradual shift in environmental monitoring from using target analysis to either suspect screening analysis (SSA) or non-targeted analysis (NTA), which relies on accurate mass measurements, mass spectral fragmentation patterns, and retention time information obtained using liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry. The work presented in this paper focuses on a wide-scope detection of micropollutants in surface water samples from the Potomac River watershed (United States). An in-house database composed of 1039 compounds based on experimental analysis of primary standards was established, and SSA workflow was optimized and applied to determine the presence of micropollutants in surface water. A total of 103 micropollutants were detected in the samples, some of which are contaminants that were not previously monitored and belong to various classes such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances and other persistent industrial chemicals. The impact of best management practices being implemented for nitrogen and phosphorus reductions were also assessed for their potential to reduce micropollutant transport. This work illustrates the advantages of suspect screening methods to determine a large number of micropollutants in environmental samples and reveals the potential to co-manage a diverse array of micropollutants based on shared transport and transformation mechanisms in watersheds.

Logging activities and its associated infrastructure are potential pathways for invasive forest plants, yet little is known about logger activities regarding invasive plants during logging operations. Logging business owners in Minnesota, USA were surveyed about invasive forest plants as a case study to learn about their awareness, interactions with landowners and land managers, actions to control the spread of invasives, perceived business impacts, and information needs. Fifty-one percent of respondents indicated they were either somewhat or very knowledgeable about invasive forest plants in the state, although most were not confident they could correctly identify various plants in the field. Approximately half of the respondents reported voluntarily undertaking activities to prevent the introduction or limit the spread of invasive plants. An association was found between voluntary and contractual invasive plant control activities. While 2% had developed invasive plant treatment expertise as an additional business offering, 51% expressed interest in doing so. Almost 90% were concerned that if additional invasive plant best management practices (BMPs) were to be developed, business impacts would be moderate to large. On their timber sales in the past year, respondents reported that 68% of landowners and 47% of land managers did not discuss invasive plants with them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Soil erosion is one of the most important forms of soil degradation which topographical characteristics are effective on its occurrence and spatial distribution. Actually, soil erosion is one form of soil degradation that includes on-site and off-site effects and the off-site effect is deposition and sedimentation. In recent decades, the potential of soil erosion has been recognized as a serious threat against soil sustainability. Topographical attributes such as slope gradient (S) and slope length (L) are considered as the most important land surface properties which control energy fluxes, overland and intra-soil transport of water and sediment, and vegetation cover distribution within a landscape. The L and S are two main factors in the USLE equation which are meaningfully effective on soil erosion. The development of modern techniques such as geomorphometry has made it possible to quantify these attributes in GIS environments. Geomorphometry or terrain analysis is a computer technology-based science in which morphometric and hydrological attributes are calculated by a series of mathematical algorithms from a digital elevation model (DEM). WaTEM/SEDEM is water and tillage erosion model/sedimentation which is possible to estimate water erosion and also different forms of sediments in the watershed and hydrographical network. The accuracy of DEM in this model is really important and effective on the quality of model outputs. Material and Methods: Landscape planning tools might help simplify the complexity of soil erosional processes. Furthermore, using predictive tools open up for the possibilities to investigate the effectiveness of different management scenarios on soil erosional responses to make a decision for improving soil properties by application of BMPs. Soil erosion modelling as a landscape planning tool is an efficient way to investigate the on-site and off-site effects of erosion. At the same time this tool opens up for an opportunity to perform scenario analysis with the respect to the placement of structural BMPs such as buffer zones. The soil erosion model WaTEM has been used as a landscape planning tool. WaTEM is a spatially distributed empirical model to simulate both erosion and deposition by water explicitly in a two dimensional landscape. This soil erosion model has been used as a landscape planning tool. The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) has been developed to predict sheet and rill erosion. Desmet and Govers (1996) showed that using the 2D-calculation of the LS-factor in WaTEM made it possible to predict rill, interrill, and ephemeral gully erosions. In this study the spatial distribution of soil erosion and deposition affected by different LS-factors were investigated using WaTEM/SEDEM model that including rainfall erosivity (R-factor), soil erodibility (K-factor), topography (LSfactor), crop cover (C-factor) and management (P-factor) as GIS layers (.rst format) in Zoji watershed located in Shush (Khuzestan province). The WaTEM/SEDEM includs three main input parts, the first part consist of DEM, parcel map and stream network. The second part is CP factor and the third part consist of LS algorithms. The variations of LS algorithms are a milestone of this model and provide the possibility to define different LS situations in the watershed. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of LS algorithms, in the simulation process Govers, McCool, Nearing and Wishmeier-Smith algorithms were defined for WaTEM/SEDEM model. Results and Discussion: Results of correlation (R=0.78) showed that topography had the highest effect on soil erosion distribution. Also our results illustrated that the amount of deposition in forms of total sediment production (TSP), total sediment deposition (TSD) and total sediment export (TSE) between different LS algorithms were disparate. Based on prediction of rill and interrill erosion, Nearing algorithm was the best LS algorithm and Govers algorithm was convenient in order to monitor and evaluate gully erosion. This study results showed that Govers algorithm estimated the highest amount of TSP because the Govers algorithm basically estimate the sheet, rill, interrill and gully erosion, therefore the amount of sediment in this algorithms is the highest one. For Govers algorithm the estimated TRE was the highest because the Gully erosion also was in the calculations and mostly the volume discharge originated from Gully was significantly higher than sheet and rill erosion. Therefore, regarding the types of prevailing erosion in each case the type of selected LS algorithm to simulate soil erosion and deposition distribution should be different. Conclusion: In general, WaTEM/SEDEM and its LS algorithms is a suitable tool to select and apply best management practices (BMPs) to control soil erosion at critical areas and hotspots. Stream ecosystems are increasingly at risk for thermal impairment as urbanization intensifies, resulting in more heated runoff from impervious cover that is less likely to be cooled naturally. While several best management practices, including bioretention filters, have been able to reduce thermal pollution, success has been limited. The extent of thermal mitigation required to prevent ecological damage remains unknown. A calibrated runoff temperature model of a case study watershed in Blacksburg, VA was developed to determine the cumulative treatment volume of bioretention filters required to reduce thermal impacts caused by runoff from development in the watershed to regulated biologically acceptable levels. A future build out scenario of the study watershed was also analyzed. Results from this study established that runoff thermal pollution cannot be fully reduced to goal thresholds during all storms using bioretention filter retrofits. While retrofitting significantly decreased temperatures and heat exports relative to the controls, increasing treatment volumes did not really enhance mitigation. Alternate thermal mitigation methods that actively remove runoff volume should be considered where more thermal mitigation is required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The selection and execution of appropriate best management practices (BMPs) in critical areas of a watershed can effectively reduce sediment yield. Objectives of this research include developing a watershed-scale Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model for the Big Sunflower River Watershed (BSRW), identifying high sediment yield areas using calibrated and validated model, and assessing the effects of various BMPs. The efficiency of three BMPs, grassed waterways (GWW), vegetative filter strips (VFS), and grade stabilization structures (GSS), and their combinations in reducing sediment yield, were investigated. The model performed well for streamflow (P-factor = 0.72–0.87; R-factor = 0.74–1.27; R2 = 0.60–0.86; NSE = 0.60–0.86) and total suspended solids (TSS) (P-factor = 0.56–0.89; R-factor = 0.43–2.83; R2 = 0.62–0.91; NSE = 0.38–0.91) during calibration and validation. The simulation of individual BMPs revealed that GWW showed the highest sediment yield reduction (up to 44%), followed by VFS (up to 38%) and GSS (up to 7%). Two BMPs’ combinations showed that GSS and GWW had the largest sediment yield reduction potential (up to 47%) while VFS and GSS had the lowest potential (up to 42%). Similarly, a combination of all three BMPs reduced the sediment yield up to 50%. The findings of this study will aid in sustainable watershed management and will be valuable for watershed managers and planners.

Accurate parameterization of water quality routines within stormwater models can improve simulation, prediction of system behavior, and lead to more informed decision making. This work recognizes that factors controlling runoff concentrations and treatment in stormwater best management practices (BMPs) vary with region, assumes region is a proxy for these factors, and seeks to improve tool parameterization by (1) identifying a regionalization scheme that best explains variability in national datasets of runoff water quality and BMP performance, (2) generating region-specific model parameter values, and (3) demonstrating how model output varies when using national vs. regional parameters. Of the four regionalization schemes tested, the National Climatic Data Center's Regions best explained variance in pollutant runoff concentrations from the National Stormwater Quality Database, accounting for more data variability (1.1%) than the watershed's land use (0.4%). For BMP performance extracted from the International Stormwater BMP Database, the United States (U.S.) Environmental Protection Agency's Rain Zones explained the most variance (1.1%), which is one-fifth of the variance explained by BMP type (5.0%). These results were used to generate regional parameter lookup tables for stormwater quality modeling. Test cases from the 100 most populous cites in the U.S. showed national parameters predicted BMP effluent concentrations that were 15% lower than the regional parameters for five pollutants. In a companion paper (Part 1), the basic concepts are discussed in details. In this paper, the application of the concepts and the proposed methodology in that paper are utilized to set the strategies in order to quantify reliability attributes. The case study is Hunts Point wastewater treatment plant and its sewershed in Bronx, New York City, so that it could function during flood. The strategies are selected and reliability of the Hunts Point plant is estimated before and after using best management practices (BMPs). Therefore, the copula based non-stationary 100–year flood frequency analysis of rainfall and storm surge analyzed in the companion paper (Part 1), are used to obtain the design values of surge and rainfall. A differential evaluation Markov Chain with Bayesian interface is used in that paper for parameter estimation. Because the co-occurrence of surge and rainfall is more critical in coastal areas, the design value resulted from bivariate analysis has been considered in this study. In this Part 2, a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) approach, which characterized the uncertainty of sub-criteria in load-resistance concept, is applied. The Margin of Safety (MOS) concept is extended to numerically assess a rather non-probabilistic MCDM evaluation of load and resistance to estimate the reliability of the plant. Finally, Effective strategies are selected for flood hazard mitigation to improve the reliability and performance of the plant. The results present an increase of about 46% in reliability after using BMPs. The framework presented in this paper is applicable to other coastal watersheds and could be a platform for addressing some pressing issues in coastal preparedness with impacts on design criteria of coastal infrastructure. With the advent of both federal and state storm water management regulations, state and municipal highway departments must consider a broad array of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for meeting storm water treatment objectives for both new road construction and roadway-improvement projects. In recent years, a number of manufacturers have entered the marketplace with a variety of proprietary devices for treating storm water. One of the most common types of devices is the hydrodynamic separator (also referred to as innovative water-quality inlet, particle separator, or swirl concentrator). Evaluating these technologies for application in the highway setting requires consideration of a number of factors relative to these devices’ treatment performance, inspection and maintenance requirements, and installation and operating costs. The Massachusetts Highway Department (MassHighway), under a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Geological Survey, recently conducted a detailed field study of water-quality inlets (WQIs) located on the Southeast Expressway in Boston. That study provided valuable lessons regarding storm water sampling protocols and data analyses used to evaluate hydrodynamic separators. (These products generally consist of refinements in the design of the standard WQI.) This paper discusses the lessons learned and offers recommendations for evaluating the performance of proprietary designs within this class of BMP. A variety of findings came out of the Southeast Expressway (SEE) Study that should be considered when evaluating “hydrodynamic separators.” The study evaluated two separate WQIs, each of which received storm water discharges from deep-sump (four-foot) catch basins. It was found that the one continuously monitored deep-sump catch basin had an annual suspended sediment removal efficiency (SSRE) of 39%, whereas the annual average SSRE for two WQIs was 32% (based on the remaining load after flow through the catch basins). Captured sediments were comprised predominantly of sand-sized particles. Residence time was the primary factor controlling the SSRE. To a lesser degree, antecedent conditions and volume of rain also affected the SSRE. Other findings were that metals and nutrients tend to concentrate on particles smaller than sand and that sediment resuspension occurred in both the catch basin and the WQIs. In addition to the limited suspended sediment removal efficiency of the WQIs, the SEE Study found that the WQIs were ineffective at removing soluble pollutants, fine particles, floatable solids (debris and litter), and oils and grease. Prior to installing hydrodynamic separators, the operators of drainage systems and environmental regulators should obtain scientifically supportable data on the field performance of hydrodynamic separators. Based on the findings and experience obtained over the course of the SEE Study, MassHighway recommends the following key elements for validating the field performance of hydrodynamic separators: • Collect field data that is both representative of the range of rainfall events and that is applicable to the conditions (e.g., ambient particle-size distributions) under which the BMP likely will be installed; • When sampling, differentiate between the effects of “supernatant displacement” and active-particle removal by the separator (i.e., “hydrostatic” versus “hydrodynamic” separation). This requires flow-proportional sampling throughout each storm event; • Account for antecedent conditions, bypass flows, and resuspension when calculating the SSRE; • Sample a sufficient number of storms not only to obtain statistically significant data, but to include the full range of operating conditions to which the device will be subject; • Analyze treatment performance by “Summation of Loads,” which is the preferable method for accuracy and quality control; • Sample storms sequentially, to allow for a mass-balance calculation; • Include measurements of particle-size distribution in the sampling and analysis program to assess the removal efficiency of Total Suspended Solids (or, preferably, Suspended Sediment Concentration), as well as that of other contaminants associated with various particle-size fractions. Hydrodynamic separators should also be evaluated relative to other potential limitations. For example, if these underground structures function to contain fuel spills, then they have the potential to create an explosion hazard. In addition, according to the literature, hydrodynamic separators also may create conditions suitable for breeding mosquitoes and bacteria or conditions that result in liberating nutrients and metals from captured sediments. Based on its evaluation of WQIs and on the literature MassHighway has reviewed to date, further scientifically sound evaluation is necessary to demonstrate the effectiveness of hydrodynamic separators as primary-treatment devices. Although MassHighway has documented the limitations of the WQIs used along the Southeast Expressway (e.g., low overall removal of suspended sediment, particularly fine particles), hydrodynamic separators may be appropriate for pre-treatment and retrofit applications where sand is the target contaminant and where the operator has adequate maintenance capabilities.

The Midwest is well known for agriculture, and Iowa is a leader in corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) production. Fertilizers and chemical pesticides used to increase crop production can adversely affect the soil and water health. Midwest farmers also produce livestock and graze cattle on pastureland that can lead to excessive surface runoff and soil erosion. Establishing vegetative filter strips (VFSs) along the edge of farmland is one of the best management practices (BMPs) to reduce nutrient and sediment loss. However, studies have revealed that the classic VFS design along the length of an agricultural field does not adequately address nonuniform flow through the buffer. New designs are being researched to increase the efficiency of the VFS. In order to accurately implement new design strategies, the runoff flowpaths into the VFS need to be accurately modeled. This research assesses the performance of existing established VFS buffers of selected sites by modeling and analyzing the flow accumulation from the field into the VFS using geographic information system (GIS) and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) derived digital elevation model (DEM) 5 × 5 m data. This study also employed the new coefficient of flow interception (CFI) approach that improves the process of identifying areas where flow is concentrated and designing more efficient filter strips to account for concentrated runoff. In this study, the performance of VFS in three sites was evaluated by developing and using the CFI. Among the three sites, site 1 had very poor efficiency and no flow passes through the VFS, site 2 had low efficiency, and site 3 had excellent efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Given the expansion of payments for water‐based ecosystem services (PWES) worldwide, two relevant issues are as follows: (1) determination of efficient allocations of payments among land managers, and (2) how this might change when paying one manager to implement a best management practice (BMP) to enhance an ecosystem service impacts the cost‐effectiveness of BMPs considered by other land managers not currently involved in PWES. Such externalities may be negative if diminishing returns dominate, or positive if mechanisms such as "social diffusion" dominate. We analyze how a planner should optimally allocate payments, depending on whether the expected externalities are negligible, negative, or positive. We employ (1) an optimal control model to gain insights on the problem's dynamics, and (2) stochastic dynamic programming to determine optimal funding strategies using a specific application. The study contributes to the literature by identifying dynamically optimal PWES payment patterns, and illustrates how they should change when one accounts for externalities induced by the program. Because such impacts have not been addressed previously in a rigorous way, this treatment provides useful value added for PWES design and implementation. Phosphorus (P) and sediment inputs from agricultural drainage contribute to the development of hypereutrophic conditions in lakes across the world. Two‐stage (2‐S) ditches, an agricultural best management practice gaining acceptance in the Midwestern United States, increase floodplain area within drainage ditches to help capture nutrients and sediment. While denitrification has been shown to increase on 2‐S benches, less is known about their P retention ability. This study assessed the abiotic and biotic P retention of two separate 2‐S ditches compared to their corresponding traditional reaches directly upstream within the Macatawa watershed, located in West Michigan. Soluble reactive P export was significantly reduced in 2‐S baseflow of both ditch systems. Equilibrium P concentration values suggest retention of P within the 2‐S sediment. P was bound within stable fractions in both 2‐S and traditional reaches. An analysis of P stock within the ditches revealed sediment held over 96% of total P (TP) within each reach compared to <4% in bench vegetation and periphyton combined. Turbidity, but not TP, was reduced in one study ditch, whereas TP, but not turbidity, was reduced in the other study ditch. Geomorphic stability may have been responsible for differing P retention between ditches. Ability to retain P appears to be impacted by physical as well as biogeochemical characteristics; hence, structure and age of 2‐S reaches influence P retention. This study examines the social-psychological drivers of conservation practice adoption among farmers in Minnesota. Specifically, it applies a moral obligation model to understand farmer decision-making related to water resource management, focusing in particular on conservation tillage and drainage management. Data were collected through a self-administered mail survey of 1500 landowners in two subwatersheds of the Red River Basin: Wild Rice River and Middle Snake-Tamarac Rivers. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Study results demonstrate that farmers' decisions to adopt conservation practices are influenced by personal norms and perceived ability to protect water resources. Further, beliefs about personal responsibility for water protection, and perceived ability to protect water resources activate personal norms of water protection. Collectivistic and biosphere-altruistic values serve as the basis for the activation of personal norms. Study findings suggest that a combination of behavioral intervention strategies that provide tailored information about local water resource problems, appeal to farmers' values, sense of responsibility and personal obligation, and enhance farmers' ability to use conservation practices may be effective in achieving higher levels of conservation practice adoption. Identification of critical erosion-prone areas of the watershed and implementation of best management practices (BMPs) is necessary to control the watershed degradation by reducing the sediment and nutrient losses. The present study evaluates and recommends the BMPs in an agriculture-based Marol watershed (5092 km2) of India, using a hydrologic model, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). After successful calibration and validation, the model simulated daily/monthly discharge and sediment were found satisfactory throughout the simulation period. The model was then applied with a calibrated set of parameters for evaluating the effectiveness of various management practices for sediment and nutrient loss control. Keeping in mind the existing agricultural practices, socio-economic aspects and geography of the study area, the management practices were focused on four crops (Maize, Rice, Soybeans and Ground nut), three fertilization levels (high, medium and low), four tillage treatments (Field cultivator, Conservation tillage, Zero tillage and Mould board plough), and two conservation operations (Contour farming and Filter strips). The simulated annual average sediment yield from the watershed was found to be 12.2 t.ha−1yr−1. The water balance analysis revealed that, the evapo-transpiration is predominant over the watershed (approximately 46.3% of the annual average rainfall). Reduction in sediment yield and nutrient loss was observed with alternate cropping treatments of Groundnut and Soybean, as compared to Paddy and Maize cultivation. Overall, based on simulated results, the field cultivator tillage practice and conservation practices viz., contour farming and filter strips, could be adopted to reduce sediment yield and nutrient losses in the critical sub-watersheds of the study area and in other watersheds with similar hydro-climatic conditions. With the recent emergence of dangerous mosquito species in cities, Sustainable Drainage Systems used to manage stormwater are sometimes suspected to favour their development. In the metropolis of Lyon, the density of mosquitoes were studied in 15 retention, detention and/or infiltration sites, two green roofs, seven swales and 20 gully pots in traditional sewer networks. None of the swales retained water long enough to be sampled. No larvae were detected in the green roofs. Four classical species were found in the retention/detention basins (Culex pipiens, Culex hortensis, Anopheles maculipennis sl and Culiseta longiareolata). They appeared in May, mainly in the artificial habitats (e.g. concrete parts). Gully pots were colonized by Culex pipiens, Culiseta longiareolata during summer and by Aedes albopictus, 'tiger mosquito' in autumn. Vegetated systems where water was drained rapidly (i.e. green roofs, infiltration basins or swales) were not significant breeding sites compared to more artificial sites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many developing countries and regions are currently facing serious water environmental problems, especially the lack of monitoring systems for medium- to small-sized watersheds. The load duration curve (LDC) is an effective method to identify polluted waterbodies and clarify the point sources or non-point sources of pollutants. However, it is a large challenge to establish the LDC in small river basins due to the lack of available observed runoff data. In addition, the LDC cannot yet spatially trace the specific sources of the pollutants. To overcome the limitations of LDC, this study develops a LDC based on a distributed hydrological model of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). First, the SWAT model is used to generate the runoff data. Then, for the control and management of over-loaded polluted water, the spatial distribution and transportation of original sources of point and non-point pollutants are ascertained with the aid of the SWAT model. The development procedures of LDC proposed in this study are applied to the Jian-jiang River basin, a tributary of the Yangtze River, in Duyun city of Guizhou province. The Great Lakes "Priority Watershed" effort targeted the Upper East River watershed, a 116.5-km2 tributary watershed to Wisconsin's Green Bay, to reduce its sediment and nutrients loads from agricultural sources. A Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was created to determine the effectiveness of agricultural Best Management Practices (BMPs) funded through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The model was calibrated at the monthly time-step for flow, sediment, dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP), total phosphorus (TP), nitrate, and total nitrogen (TN). Field- and watershed-scale sediment and nutrient reductions were calculated due to the implementation of 74 BMP combinations on dairy and cash grain rotations. Modeling results indicated that when multiple BMPs were placed on a field, especially those including filter strips and grassed waterways, sediment and nutrient loads generally were reduced more than single BMP implementation. The most effective in-field practice at reducing DRP and TP on dairy fields was a combination of 5 different BMPs: cover crops, crop rotation, nutrient management plan, reduced tillage, and a filter strip. Conservation cover was the single most effective practice at reducing sediment and nutrient yields. Sediment and nutrient loads decreased at the watershed scale as the quantity and coverage of BMPs increased. When all contracted BMPs were simulated at the watershed scale, sediment loads were reduced 2%, while TP, DRP, TN and nitrate loads were reduced 20%, 9%, 24%, and 17%, respectively. The U.S. Corn Belt is highly productive with respect to grain and livestock commodities but often neglects to deliver other benefits such as soil stability, nutrient retention, and clean water. New precision technologies and conservation planning frameworks offer opportunities to adapt the current agricultural system to meet environmental goals along with production by strategically placing best management practices (BMPs) to target and address specific in‐field resource concerns. To understand farmers' and farmland owners' willingness to participate in such targeting schemes, we conducted in‐depth interviews with 18 farmers and farmland owners whose fields were targeted for soil and nutrient loss in two watersheds in central Iowa. We examined their current application of BMPs and opportunities and constraints to further adoption. We found that farmers and farmland owners often recognized the importance of producing a diverse suite of on‐ and off‐farm environmental benefits but lacked the context, information, certainty, and strong incentives to manage for them. Interviewees were generally receptive to using technologies to target BMPs to areas with resource concerns but expressed concerns about applications on their own land. They specifically perceived challenges related to cost, management complexity, coordination with government programs, and loss of autonomy. For broad acceptance, a spatially targeted conservation approach would need to be paired with expanded partnerships, trusted technical service, and adaptation incentives to reduce farm‐level economic trade‐offs. Abstract The use of Low Impact Development (LID) alternatives requires the establishment of appropriate regulations and guidelines on acceptable practices and developing consensus among stakeholders, thus assuring the rights of all water-users and for conflict resolution. This content analysis aims to examine whether stormwater regulations and guidelines have addressed the use of LID alternatives in urban settings and compares the current state of regulations in the context of Canadian provinces and territories., A list of eight core criteria relevant to the implementation of LID has been identified and an ordinal scale ranging from 1 to 6 is proposed to track the progress towards LID-friendly regulations in each province. Furthermore, based on comparative assessment, Canadian provinces are categorized into three groups: 'highly, moderately, and slightly LID-friendly' to project a broad view of the current state of regulations required to promote LID alternatives.. Results show that LID has become the mainstream technology for stormwater management in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec, which are categorized as 'highly LID-friendly' provinces. The provinces where LID alternatives have gained considerable acceptance are categorized as 'moderately LID-friendly' , which include Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Saskatchewan. Lastly, the province of New Brunswick is categorized as 's lightly LID-friendly', because of very limited use of LID alternatives in the stormwater management regulations. These findings of this content analysis can be of significant value to strengthen provincial/territorial regulations and extend the benefits of LID in stormwater quality management and sustainable water management. Water quality and stream habitat in agricultural watersheds are under greater scrutiny as hydrologic pathways are altered to increase crop production. Ditches have been traditionally constructed to remove water from agricultural lands. Little attention has been placed on alternative ditch designs that are more stable and provide greater habitat diversity for wildlife and aquatic species. In 2009, 1.89 km of a conventional drainage ditch in Mower County, Minnesota, was converted to a two‐stage ditch (TSD) with small, adjacent floodplains to mimic a natural system. Cross section surveys, conducted pre‐ and post‐construction, generally indicate a stable channel with minor adjustments over time. Vegetation surveys showed differences in species composition and biomass between the slopes and the benches, with changes ongoing. Longitudinal surveys demonstrated a 12‐fold increase in depth variability. Fish habitat quality improved with well‐sorted gravel riffles and deeper pool habitat. The biological response to improved habitat quality was investigated using a Fish Index of Biological Integrity (FIBI). Our results show higher FIBI scores post‐construction with scores more similar to natural streams. In summary, the TSD demonstrated improvements in riparian and instream habitat quality and fish communities, which showed greater fish species richness, higher percentages of gravel spawning fish, and better FIBI scores. This type of management tool could benefit ditches in other regions where gradient and geology allow. To increase crop yield, high fertilizer application rates have generally been used. The residual fertilizers potentially become a source of diffused pollution, and degrade soil and water quality. Such nonpoint source pollution is a major threat to reservoir eutrophication. The best management practices (BMPs) are usually used to prevent eutrophication; however, the environmental distribution of the applied fertilizers has not been understood properly. This could lead to a biased assessment of the rational quantity of nitrogen and phosphorous applied and the selection of BMPs. A field investigation of 32 plantations and 4 forests in the Feitsui Reservoir watershed, Taiwan, was conducted. Storm runoff water and soils were sampled, and a mass balance was used to demonstrate the gross nutrient budget. The results showed that when applying fertilizers of 2700 kg ha−1 in tea plantations only 18.3% of applied nitrogen and 5.5% of applied phosphorus were utilized by tea plants. Less than 5% of applied phosphorus was released in storm runoff, and more than 90% remained in the field. Approximately 30% of the nitrogen was lost through storm runoff, and 52% was stored in the soil mass. Therefore, reducing fertilizer application was recommended as the principal BMP, and collecting and treating storm runoff was suggested for controlling nitrogen pollution. The current management of soil erosion is an efficient measure for controlling phosphorus pollution.
