Abstract

Characterizing the trophic ecology of sharks is fundamental to understand the potential cascading effects of their current décline in marine ecosystems. This thesis investigates the trophic niches of shark species in Coastal and offshore ecosystems around Baja California Sur (Mexico) in both the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California, a region characterized by a strong pressure from artisanal fisheries. Ecologically, the guiding thread was to elucidate the importance of resource partitioning in shaping shark realized trophic niches, at both the intra- and inter-specific level. To achieve this objective, multiple trophic biomarkers were used, such as carbon, nitrogen and mercury stable isotopes, and fatty acid compositions, to describe the vertical and horizontal dimensions of shark foraging habits.At the intra-specific level, resource partitioning was supported by the use of distinct ecosystems for juvenile hammerhead sharks due to ontogenetic shifts in habitat and prey. Inter-specific resource partitioning seems to be driven by foraging at different depth within pelagic assemblages, but could also depend on local environmental conditions, such as upwelling activity. This work also characterized the life cycle of a poorly studied hammerhead species, the smooth hammerhead shark (Sphyrna zygaena). The prolonged Coastal residency of this species through ontogeny suggests significant vulnerability to local artisanal fisheries. Finallly, the demonstrated complementarity of trophic markers provides a promising insight to unravel food web structure and ecological mechanisms.; Décrire la niche trophique occupée par les requins est fondamental dans la compréhension du contrôle trophique qu'ils exercent sur les communautés associées et des potentielles conséquences de leur surpêche sur le milieu marin. Dans cette thèse, l'habitat alimentaire de différentes espèces de requins a été étudié le long des côtes de Basse Californie du Sud (Mexique), une région où la pression de pêche sur ces prédateurs est forte. D’un point de vue écologique, l’idée directrice était de décrire l’importance de la répartition de la ressource dans la définition des niches trophiques à l’échelle intra- et inter-spécifique. Pour cela, plusieurs outils ont été utilisés tels que les isotopes stables du carbone, de l’azote et du mercure, ainsi que la composition en acides gras permettant la description verticale et horizontale des habitats alimentaires. À l’échelle intra-spécifique, la répartition de la ressource chez les requins marteaux juvéniles est liée à l’utilisation d’écosystèmes et de proies distincts au cours de la croissance. À l’échelle inter spécifique, elle s’exprime par des différences de profondeur d’alimentation au sein des assemblages pélagiques, mais dépend aussi des conditions environnementales telles que la présence d’upwelling. Ce travail a également conduit à une meilleure caractérisation du cycle de vie du requin marteau commun (Sphyrna zygaena), démontrant ainsi une vulnérabilité accrue aux pressions de pêche liée à une résidence prolongée en milieu côtier. Finalement, la complémentarité des marqueurs trophiques utilisés offre de prometteuses perspectives quant à l’étude des réseaux alimentaires.

Abstract

Deep-sea elasmobranchs are commonly reported as bycatch of deep-sea fisheries and their subsequent loss has been highlighted as a long-running concern to the ecosystem ecological functioning. To understand the possible consequences of their removal, information on basic ecological traits, such as diet and foraging strategies, is needed. Such aspects have been widely studied through stomach content analysis but the lack of long-term dietary information requires other tools to be used such as stable isotopes. This study examines nitrogen and carbon isotope compositions of the velvet belly lantern shark, Etmopterus spinax, one of the most impacted shark species in northeastern Atlantic fisheries as a result of accidental catches. E. spinax was sampled at four different locations, characterized by contrasting oceanographic and ecological conditions: the western Mediterranean Sea (near the Balearic Islands), the southern Iberian upwelling system, Rockall Trough and southwestern Norwegian fjords. Stomach content analysis revealed similar prey species among sites, with a diet dominated by Euphausiacea (mostly Meganyctiphanes norvegica) and an ontogenetic shift towards small teleost fishes, cephalopods or other crustaceans. Despite these similarities, muscle stable isotope compositions differed across sampled locations. Rather than clear dietary differences, the contrasted isotopic values are likely to reflect differences in environmental settings and biogeochemical processes affecting nutrient dynamics at the base of the food webs.

Abstract

The twilight zone contains the largest biomass of the world’s ocean. Identifying its role in the trophic supply and contaminant exposure of marine megafauna constitutes a critical challenge in the context of global change. The white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is a threatened species with some of the highest concentrations of neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg) among marine top predators. Large white sharks migrate seasonally from coastal habitats, where they primarily forage on pinnipeds, to oceanic offshore habitats. Tagging studies suggest that while offshore, white sharks may forage at depth on mesopelagic species, yet no biochemical evidence exists. Here, we used mercury isotopic composition to assess the dietary origin of MeHg contamination in white sharks from the Northeast Pacific Ocean. We estimated that a minimum of 72% of the MeHg accumulated by white sharks originates from the consumption of mesopelagic prey, while a maximum of 25% derives from pinnipeds. In addition to highlighting the potential of mercury isotopes to decipher the complex ecological cycle of marine predators, our study provides evidence that the twilight zone constitutes a crucial foraging habitat for these large predators, which had been suspected for over a decade. Climate change is predicted to expand the production of mesopelagic MeHg and modify the mesopelagic biomass globally. Considering the pivotal role of the twilight zone is therefore essential to better predict both MeHg exposure and trophic supply to white sharks, and effectively protect these key vulnerable predators.

Postal que reproduce una pintura de 1912 de Juan Llimona. Representa la expulsión de Adán y Eva del Paraíso. En primer término se sitúan Adán y Eva en la parte izquierda del lienzo, ambos ya cabizbajos y avergonzados. La serpiente en el árbol de manzanas, junto a una figura que podría ser la Virgen o una prefiguración de Dios, están en la parte derecha. Al fondo se puede ver el frondoso jardín del Paraíso. Esta obra, junto con otras seis, decoraban los plafones de un baldaquino erigido en el Altar Mayor del Monasterio de Santa María de Ripoll, por lo que tienen una forma arqueada para adaptarse al espacio. Postal que reproduce una pintura del año 1912 de Juan Llimona. Representa el entierro de la Virgen María. Transportada sobre una camilla por algunos de los apóstoles, la Virgen aparece dignificada, vestida de blanco y con la aureóla sobre su cabeza. Los apóstoles se muentran compungidos y algunos llevan sus manos a los ojos por el llanto. Sobre la Virgen aparecen, en un plano celestial, dos ángeles. Esta obra, junto con otras seis, decoraban los plafones de un baldaquino erigido en el Altar Mayor del Monasterio de Santa María de Ripoll, por lo que tienen una forma arqueada para adaptarse al espacio.
