The American College Health Association estimated that 31% of college students are overweight or obese. It is important that students have a correct perception of body weight status as extra weight has potential adverse health effects. This study assessed accuracy of perceived weight status versus medical classification among 102 college students. Perceived weight status was determined by responses to these questions, as part of a health questionnaire, "Are you overweight?" and "Which of the following best describes you?" (obese, overweight, normal weight, under weight). Medical classification was indicated from body mass index (using researcher-recorded weight and height) based on World Health Organization standards. Seventy eight percent of participants (n = 80) correctly assessed their weight status with significantly more females (79%, n = 45 of 57) than males (53%, n = 24 of 45) correctly assessing their status (p less than 0.01). All participants who misclassified their weight (n = 33) under classified their status as compared to the medical classification. Participants who correctly classified their status were, on average, 0-10 pounds overweight whereas those who misclassified were 11-20 pounds overweight. Among college students, nutrition education strategies should focus on students correctly identifying their weight status and health implications associated with an overweight/obese condition. In 2018, the Clinical Education Task Force (CETF) of ASAHP presented five recommendations to address clinical education needs. In 2019, the ASAHP Interprofessional Education Task Force (IPTF) established a regional summit for academic and industry constituents to improve health professional education and training. This article describes the steps taken to render a one-day St. Louis regional summit to receive stakeholder feedback on the nationally published recommendations for clinical education. The electronic survey was distributed to potential summit attendees about the CETF recommendations. Data categories captured included demographic details and questions about priorities, use, and engagement with the recommendations, and one open-ended question for each of the recommendations invited respondents to provide feedback. There were 349 respondents: 34% clinical preceptors/coordinators/directors, 31% academic program faculty, and 18% administrators. Common themes included the establishment of common goals between academic programs and healthcare organizations for partnership building, better recognition of the value of interprofessional collaborative practice, and technology as vital to the evolution of the healthcare system. Future directions should include regional summit meetings to address the implementation of the CETF recommendations relative to regional and localized challenges. Breast cancer is a hormonally-driven cancer, and various dietary factors are associated with estrogen metabolism, including dietary fiber. Several studies report associations between dietary fiber and breast cancer; however, research on whether fiber influences circulating estrogens through the gut microbiota is rare. The objective of this cross-sectional study among 29 newly-diagnosed (stage 0-II), post-menopausal breast cancer patients is to examine associations between dietary fiber and the gut microbiota that are linked with β-glucuronidase activity, and purportedly increase circulating estrogens. Spearman's and partial correlations controlling for body mass index and age were performed using dietary recall data, Illumina MiSeq generated microbiota relative abundance, and HPLC-mass spectrometry-derived estradiol and estrone levels. Major findings are: (1) total dietary fiber is inversely associated with Clostridium hathewayi (r= −0.419; p = 0.024); (2) soluble fiber is inversely associated with Clostridium (r=-0.11; p = 0.02); (3) insoluble fiber is positively associated with Bacteroides uniformis sp. (r = 0.382; p = 0.041); and (4) serum estradiol and estrone levels are not correlated with species/genera or dietary fiber, though there is a trend toward an inverse association between soluble fiber and estradiol levels (r= −0.30; p = 0.12). Issue: Practices and programs of mentorship for health professions faculty vary considerably across disciplines, departments, and schools, and it remains unclear what are key elements and best practices for faculty mentoring. Method: This project used a mixed methods approach to identify best practices for faculty mentoring. A qualitative design was used identify key themes about effective faculty mentoring from semi-structured interviews with 10 faculty mentoring experts across 5 academic health professions institutions. A quantitative design was used to identify common characteristics from faculty mentoring programs across selected institutional members of ASAHP. Outcomes: Results will be presented about practical recommendations for contextual faculty mentoring and for faculty mentoring programs for academic health professionals. Conclusions: Development of faculty mentoring programs varies widely across ASAHP institutions with most involved in professional development at the institutional level as opposed to division/departmental level. Future evaluation of faculty mentorship program development at the division/ department level warrants consideration for improving retention rates and work-life balance satisfaction. Issue: Online education is rapidly increasing, creating barriers to high quality interprofessional training for health profession students. Method: Students from Schools of Health Professions (Dietetic Interns, DI) and Medicine (Medical Students, MS) worked together as DI-MS dyads to complete a virtual program to train MS to provide nutrition coaching for patients with pre-diabetes from a single outpatient clinic that provides healthcare services to uninsured patients. The project required MS to interview DI on how to counsel adult patients with pre-diabetes. Then, MS provided nutrition coaching to DI who role-played patients. Lastly, MS performed nutrition coaching sessions with real patients. De-brief notes and writ-ten reflections were coded and analyzed using thematic qualitative analysis. Outcome: Twenty-four DI trained 30 MS to complete nutrition coaching with 31 patients at the outpatient clinic, adding up to $3100 labor cost. Common themes that emerged included reduced intimidation experience by DI from the medical role and increased perceived value by DI. Conclusion: Virtual experiences between School of Health Professions and Medical Schools is advantageous by teaching interprofessional skills and applied to service-learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Soccer athletes have better performance if they maintain low fat mass (FM) relative to fat-free mass. Recent evidence suggests that maintenance of energy balance (EB) is associated with lower FM in athletes. Prior studies have used daily EB rather than hourly, but this approach does not consider duration of time athletes spend in EB versus surplus or deficit. Objective: Test the hypotheses that (1) time spent in EB is inversely associated with FM, and (2) athletes with mean hourly EB in the deficit range have lower FM than those in balance or surplus. Methods: Collegiate female soccer players (n = 20) were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. A 3-day diet/activity record was obtained and analysed to estimate EB in hourly increments. Hourly EB was categorized as: Surplus, > 400 kcal EB; Balance, between ± 400 kcal EB; Deficit, < -400 kcal EB. Total hours spent in each category and mean EB (kcals) was calculated from the 3-day period. Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis was used to derive indices of FM (total FM in kg, % fat, fat mass index). Pearson correlations evaluated associations between FM measures and time spent in each EB category. One-way ANOVA with Tukey post-hoc testing was used to assess differences in FM among athletes stratified into surplus, balance, or deficit based on mean hourly EB. Results: Hourly energy deficit was associated with higher FM compared to energy surplus or balance. The ASAHP Clinical Education Task Force (CETF) acknowledges education programs in health professions quickly adapted to circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic. CETF is comprised of representatives from academic institutions and healthcare who educate and work with health profession students across the country. CETF led a series of webinars throughout the pandemic to support clinical education. Upon review, several lessons were learned and will be presented as the "Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." "The Good" includes freely shared resources; creativity to meet accreditation standards and achieve competencies using simulation and telehealth; technology to provide uninterrupted learning and assessment; and flexible or abbreviated rotations. "The Bad" evaluates the loss of passive student learning experiences outside the classroom setting. "The Ugly" addresses loss of clinical rotations; limited access and increased competition for clinical sites; lack of faculty expertise to implement simulated labs/clinical experiences quickly; and disparities in available technologies. Asian Americans constitute one of the fastest growing minorities in the United States, yet public health information about this group is limited. This study assessed health status and intake of nutrients of public health concern among adult Montagnard immigrants, a Vietnamese ethnic pop-ulation. The I 19 participants (55 females) had urban residency in North Carolina and lived in the U.S. for four or more years. All spoke non-English in the home, 10% had low income, and 34% had cardiovascular dis-ease risk. The majority had suboptimal intake of fiber, calcium, and vitamin A, and among 41% of participants, sodium. The findings are of concern due to the increased susceptibility of obesity related health issues among Asian Americans. Nutrient intake is a modifiable risk factor of many chronic diseases. Furthermore, many minority immigrants are supported by community programs that can serve as an avenue to support a healthy diet. Thus, these results are useful in directing nutrition policy and pro-grammatic changes to address the health status and nutrient intake gaps that we identified. The findings are applicable to other culturally distinct groups and rural residents who may be considered vulnerable popula-tions, at high risk for obesity related health issues, and who also rely on community partners for health assistance and food security. Children in Early Care and Education (ECE) centers are not meeting Dietary Guidelines (DG), which could contribute to the onset of diet-related diseases. ECE center diet quality has been assessed using either what is listed on the menu, what children are served and/or what was consumed for the lunch meal. However, it is unclear whether diet quality differs among the three measures, which may be useful to understand patterns that inform nutrition education messaging. Identify if diet quality differs among the menu, served and consumed lunch measures. Diet quality will be assessed using Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI) scores, which represent how closely DG are met. ECE centers were located within one southern state, and included rural and urban communities. For each center, three children from a 3-5 year old classroom, were randomly chosen and observed during one lunch meal, per a published protocol. The type and amount of food/beverage served to or by the child (SERVED) and the amount consumed (CONSUMED) was visually estimated and recorded. The menu from the observed lunch (MENU) was collected. For each center, a mean HEI score was calculated for SERVED, CONSUMED and MENU. Non-parametric ANOVA and Duncan's post-hoc were used to identify statistically significant differences among SERVED, CONSUMED, and MENU HEI scores. Lunch observations were completed within 28 ECE centers. The total HEI score was significantly higher (χ2 = 11.7, P =.003) among MENUS, compared to SERVED and CONSUMED. Total HEI scores among SERVED and CONSUMED were not significantly different. Diet quality was higher among menus, compared to served and consumed measures. Nutrition education messaging may encourage ECE employees to serve the food/beverage items listed on the lunch menu, in order to improve diet quality.
