Abstract

Changes in sea ice conditions and atmospheric circulation over the Southern Ocean play an important role in modulating Antarctic climate. However, observations of both sea ice and wind conditions are limited in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, both temporally and spatially, prior to the satellite era (1970 onwards). Ice core chemistry data can be used to reconstruct changes over annual, decadal, and millennial timescales. To facilitate sea ice and wind reconstructions, the CLIVASH2k (CLimate Variability in Antarctica and the Southern Hemisphere over the past 2000 years) working group has compiled a database of two species, sodium [Na+] and sulfate [SO42-], commonly measured ionic species. The database (https://doi.org/10.5285/9E0ED16E-F2AB-4372-8DF3-FDE7E388C9A7; Thomas et al., 2022) comprises records from 105 Antarctic ice cores, containing records with a maximum age duration of 2000 years. An initial filter has been applied, based on evaluation against sea ice concentration, geopotential height (500 hPa), and surface wind fields to identify sites suitable for reconstructing past sea ice conditions, wind strength, or atmospheric circulation.

13. Role of mineral dust in the nitrate preservation during the glacial period:Insights from the RICE ice core

Abstract

Nitrate (NO3-), an abundant aerosol in polar snow, is a complex environmental proxy to interpret owing to its diverse sources and susceptibility to post-depositional processes. During the last glacial period, when dust concentrations in the Antarctic ice were upto similar to 50 times than today, mineral dust appears to have a stabilizing effect on the NO3- concentration in snow. However, the mechanism leading to the stabilization remains unclear. Here, we present the new and highly resolved records of NO3- and non-sea salt calcium (nssCa(2+), a proxy for mineral dust) from the Roosevelt Island Climate Evolution (RICE) ice core. We focus on the glacial period from 83 to 26 kilo years Before Present (ka BP). The data show a statistically significant correlation between NO3- and nssCa(2+) over this period. To put our findings into a spatial context, we compare RICE data with existing records from east Antarctica (EPICA Dome C [EDC], Vostok and central Dome Fuji) and West Antarctica (West Antarctic Ice Sheet Divide Ice Core [WDC]). Spatial analysis suggests that nssCa(2+) is contributing to the effective scavenging of NO3- from the atmosphere perhaps through the formation of calcium nitrate (Ca(NO3)(2)). The geographic pattern implies that the process of Ca(NO3)(2) formation occurs during the long-distance transport of mineral dust from mid-latitude source regions by Southern Hemisphere Westerly Winds (SHWW). The data also suggest that the correlation observed at various Antarctic locations may depend on the level of dust reaching the sites from the mid-latitude sources.

17. Plausible Last Interglacial Antarctic Ice Sheet Changes Do Not Fully Explain Antarctic Ice Core Water Isotope Records

Abstract

Antarctic ice cores can help determine ice mass loss from the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) during past warm periods. We compile Last Interglacial (LIG) δ18O${\delta }^{18}O$measurements from eight Antarctic cores and compare these to new isotope‐enabled LIG simulations, which explore three plausible LIG AIS elevation and extent scenarios. We find that these simulations capture less than 10% of East Antarctic core‐mean δ18O${\delta }^{18}O$changes. Although our simulations do not fully explain the changes, they capture some inter‐core geographical δ18O${\delta }^{18}O$variations. Some LIG AIS configurations show higher skill than PI AIS configurations in simulating the inter‐core differences. The remaining discrepancies between the simulated and observed core‐mean water isotope changes suggest that LIG simulations also need to include the influences of reduced Antarctic sea ice, a warmer Southern Ocean, and resultant shifts in vapor source regions to produce a more satisfactory match to δ18O${\delta }^{18}O$observed at ice core sites. Reconstructions of Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) retreat during past warm periods provide important constraints for projections of future ice mass loss and sea level rise. The Last Interglacial (LIG) is a particularly useful example, when global temperatures were 1±1oC$\pm {1}^{o}C$warmer than preindustrial (PI) conditions, to explore future sea level rise projections associated with the successful implementation of the Paris Agreement. Here, we use data from six East Antarctic ice cores and two new, unpublished records from West Antarctica that capture LIG conditions. Water isotopes in ice cores are sensitive to changes in temperature, AIS elevation, atmospheric circulation pattern, sea ice area, and ocean conditions. We compare model simulations of the LIG with ice core data and find that elevation changes, an important indicator of ice mass loss, explain only around 9% of the isotope change captured in East Antarctic ice cores. Due to the limitation of our simulations in the coastal regions, our West Antarctic coastal sites are more challenging. In summary, we find that while the range of our simulations does not fully explain average East Antarctic PI‐to‐LIG isotope changes, they do capture some of the geographical variations in isotope change patterns. Abstract

Antarctic sea-ice extent, primary productivity and ocean circulation represent interconnected systems that form important components of the global carbon cycle. Subdecadal to centennial-scale variability can influence the characteristics and interactions of these systems, but observational records are too short to evaluate the impacts of this variability over longer timescales. Here, we use a 170-m-long sediment core collected from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Site U1357B, offshore Adélie Land, East Antarctica to disentangle the impacts of sea ice and subdecadal climate variability on phytoplankton bloom frequency over the last ~11,400 years. We apply X-ray computed tomography, Ice Proxy for the Southern Ocean with 25 carbon atoms, diatom, physical property and geochemical analyses to the core, which contains an annually resolved, continuously laminated archive of phytoplankton bloom events. Bloom events occurred annually to biennially through most of the Holocene, but became less frequent (~2–7 years) at ~4.5 ka when coastal sea ice intensified. We propose that coastal sea-ice intensification subdued annual sea-ice break-out, causing an increased sensitivity of sea-ice dynamics to subdecadal climate modes, leading to a subdecadal frequency of bloom events. Our data suggest that projected loss of coastal sea ice will impact the influence of subdecadal variability on Antarctic margin primary productivity, altering food webs and carbon-cycling processes at seasonal timescales.

Abstract

Quantitative estimates of future Antarctic climate change are derived from numerical global climate models. Evaluation of the reliability of climate model projections involves many lines of evidence on past performance combined with knowledge of the processes that need to be represented. Routine model evaluation is mainly based on the modern observational period, which started with the establishment of a network of Antarctic weather stations in 1957/58. This period is too short to evaluate many fundamental aspects of the Antarctic and Southern Ocean climate system, such as decadal-to-century time-scale climate variability and trends. To help address this gap, we present a new evaluation of potential ways in which long-term observational and paleo-proxy reconstructions may be used, with a particular focus on improving projections. A wide range of data sources and time periods is included, ranging from ship observations of the early 20th century to ice core records spanning hundreds to hundreds of thousands of years to sediment records dating back 34 million years. We conclude that paleo-proxy records and long-term observational datasets are an underused resource in terms of strategies for improving Antarctic climate projections for the 21st century and beyond. We identify priorities and suggest next steps to addressing this.

Abstract

In 2013 an ice core was recovered from Roosevelt Island, an ice dome between two submarine troughs carved by paleo-ice-streams in the Ross Sea, Antarctica. The ice core is part of the Roosevelt Island Climate Evolution (RICE) project and provides new information about the past configuration of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) and its retreat during the last deglaciation. In this work we present the RICE17 chronology, which establishes the depth–age relationship for the top 754 m of the 763 m core. RICE17 is a composite chronology combining annual layer interpretations for 0–343 m (Winstrup et al., 2019) with new estimates for gas and ice ages based on synchronization of CH4 and δ18Oatm records to corresponding records from the WAIS Divide ice core and by modeling of the gas age–ice age difference. Novel aspects of this work include the following: (1) an automated algorithm for multiproxy stratigraphic synchronization of high-resolution gas records; (2) synchronization using centennial-scale variations in methane for pre-anthropogenic time periods (60–720 m, 1971 CE to 30 ka), a strategy applicable for future ice cores; and (3) the observation of a continuous climate record back to ∼65 ka providing evidence that the Roosevelt Island Ice Dome was a constant feature throughout the last glacial period.

26. A sub-decadal record of East Antarctic biological productivity, and ocean-ice interactions over the Holocene from an ultra-expanded continental shelf sediment drift

Abstract

AGU Fall Meeting, in San Francisco (EE.UU), 9-13 december 2019, n 2010, International Ocean Discovery Programme site U1357 retrieved a 180 m thick sedimentary sequence from the Adélie Land continental shelf, offshore of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. The core targeted an expanded sediment drift (termed the Adélie Drift) that provides an ultra-high resolution record of Holocene climate variability adjacent to the Mertz Polynya system, one of the largest exporters of sea ice and Antarctic Bottom Water along the East Antarctic margin. Sedimentation at this site is dominated by pelagic biosiliceous sedimentation with accumulation rates averaging ~1.5-2 cm/year, but is heavily influenced by sediment advection by the westward flowing Antarctic Coastal Current. Previously obtained Holocene marine archives have orders of magnitude lower sedimentation rates, and commonly alternate between massive (bioturbated) and laminated diatom ooze, which obscures the ability to resolve high-frequency change at sub-decadal scales. However, U1357B is continuously laminated, and combined with high sedimentation rates, affords an unprecedented opportunity to assess sub-decadal resolution climate and biological responses at the Antarctic oceanic margin. Specifically, this record identifies El Niño Southern Ocean (ENSO) teleconnections that could account for sea-ice variability, nutrient delivery and high productivity bloom events in the coastal polynyas along Adélie Land throughout the Holocene. Here, we discuss sedimentary processes associated with formation of the Adélie Drift deposit, and how reconstructions of sediment advection through time can be used to identify shifts in current strength through the Holocene. These currents are driven by katabatic and zonal winds, and are a strong influence on biological productivity in the region. Climatic conditions over the last 11,400 years are reconstructed using a range of CT scan images, lipid biomarkers, diatom analysis, and physical/geochemical core properties. Shifting sensitivity of this system to ENSO forcing over centennial to millennial timescales coincide with rapid baseline shifts in climate and sea-ice state, indicating the existence of tipping points along the coastal margin of East Antarctica.

Abstract

Reproducible climate reconstructions of the Common Era (1 CE to present) are key to placing industrial-era warming into the context of natural climatic variability. Here we present a community-sourced database of temperature-sensitive proxy records from the PAGES2k initiative. The database gathers 692 records from 648 locations, including all continental regions and major ocean basins. The records are from trees, ice, sediment, corals, speleothems, documentary evidence, and other archives. They range in length from 50 to 2000 years, with a median of 547 years, while temporal resolution ranges from biweekly to centennial. Nearly half of the proxy time series are significantly correlated with HadCRUT4.2 surface temperature over the period 1850-2014. Global temperature composites show a remarkable degree of coherence between high-and low-resolution archives, with broadly similar patterns across archive types, terrestrial versus marine locations, and screening criteria. The database is suited to investigations of global and regional temperature variability over the Common Era, and is shared in the Linked Paleo Data (LiPD) format, including serializations in Matlab, R and Python.(TABLE)Since the pioneering work of D'Arrigo and Jacoby1-3, as well as Mann et al. 4,5, temperature reconstructions of the Common Era have become a key component of climate assessments6-9. Such reconstructions depend strongly on the composition of the underlying network of climate proxies10, and it is therefore critical for the climate community to have access to a community-vetted, quality-controlled database of temperature-sensitive records stored in a self-describing format. The Past Global Changes (PAGES) 2k consortium, a self-organized, international group of experts, recently assembled such a database, and used it to reconstruct surface temperature over continental-scale regions11 (hereafter, ` PAGES2k-2013').This data descriptor presents version 2.0.0 of the PAGES2k proxy temperature database (Data Citation 1). It augments the PAGES2k-2013 collection of terrestrial records with marine records assembled by the Ocean2k working group at centennial12 and annual13 time scales. In addition to these previously published data compilations, this version includes substantially more records, extensive new metadata, and validation. Furthermore, the selection criteria for records included in this version are applied more uniformly and transparently across regions, resulting in a more cohesive data product.This data descriptor describes the contents of the database, the criteria for inclusion, and quantifies the relation of each record with instrumental temperature. In addition, the paleotemperature time series are summarized as composites to highlight the most salient decadal-to centennial-scale behaviour of the dataset and check mutual consistency between paleoclimate archives. We provide extensive Matlab code to probe the database-processing, filtering and aggregating it in various ways to investigate temperature variability over the Common Era. The unique approach to data stewardship and code-sharing employed here is designed to enable an unprecedented scale of investigation of the temperature history of the Common Era, by the scientific community and citizen-scientists alike.

34. Mineral Dust Influence on the Glacial Nitrate Record from the RICE Ice Core, West Antarctica and Environmental Implications.

Abstract

Nitrate (NO3-), an abundant aerosol in polar snow, is a complex environmental proxy to interpret owing to the variety of its sources and its susceptibility to post-depositional processes. During the last glacial period, when the dust level in the Antarctic atmosphere was higher than today by a factor up to ~25, mineral dust appears to have a stabilizing effect on the NO3- concentration. However, the exact mechanism remains unclear. Here, we present new and highly resolved records of NO3- and non-sea salt calcium (nssCa2+, a proxy for mineral dust) from the Roosevelt Island Climate Evolution (RICE) ice core for the period 26 - 40 kilo years Before Present (ka BP). This interval includes seven millennial-scale Antarctic Isotope Maxima (AIM) events, against the background of a glacial climate state. We observe a significant correlation between NO3- and nssCa2+ over this period and especially during AIM events. We put our observation into a spatial context by comparing the records to existing data from east Antarctic cores of EPICA Dome C (EDC), Vostok and central Dome Fuji. The data suggest that nssCa2+ is contributing to the effective scavenging of NO3- from the atmosphere through the formation of Ca(NO3)2. The geographic pattern implies that the process of Ca(NO3)2 formation occurs during the long-distance transport of mineral dust from the mid-latitude source regions by Southern Hemisphere Westerly Winds (SHWW) and most likely over the Southern Ocean. Since NO3- is dust-bound and the level of dust mobilized through AIM events is mainly regulated by the latitudinal position of SHWW, we suggest that NO3- may also have the potential to provide insights into paleo-westerly wind pattern during the events. Abstract

High-resolution, well-dated climate archives provide an opportunity to investigate the dynamic interactions of climate patterns relevant for future projections. Here, we present data from a new, annually dated ice core record from the eastern Ross Sea, named the Roosevelt Island Climate Evolution (RICE) ice core. Comparison of this record with climate reanalysis data for the 1979-2012 interval shows that RICE reliably captures temperature and snow precipitation variability in the region. Trends over the past 2700 years in RICE are shown to be distinct from those in West Antarctica and the western Ross Sea captured by other ice cores. For most of this interval, the eastern Ross Sea was warming (or showing isotopic enrichment for other reasons), with increased snow accumulation and perhaps decreased sea ice concentration. However, West Antarctica cooled and the western Ross Sea showed no significant isotope temperature trend. This pattern here is referred to as the Ross Sea Dipole. Notably, during the Little Ice Age, West Antarctica and the western Ross Sea experienced colder than average temperatures, while the eastern Ross Sea underwent a period of warming or increased isotopic enrichment. From the 17th century onwards, this dipole relationship changed. All three regions show current warming, with snow accumulation declining in West Antarctica and the eastern Ross Sea but increasing in the western Ross Sea. We interpret this pattern as reflecting an increase in sea ice in the eastern Ross Sea with perhaps the establishment of a modern Roosevelt Island polynya as a local moisture source for RICE

Abstract

Climate trends in the Antarctic region remain poorly characterized, owing to the brevity and scarcity of direct climate observations and the large magnitude of interannual to decadal-scale climate variability. Here, within the framework of the PAGES Antarctica2k working group, we build an enlarged database of ice core water stable isotope records from Antarctica, consisting of 112 records. We produce both unweighted and weighted isotopic (δ18O) composites and temperature reconstructions since 0 CE, binned at 5- and 10-year resolution, for seven climatically distinct regions covering the Antarctic continent. Following earlier work of the Antarctica2k working group, we also produce composites and reconstructions for the broader regions of East Antarctica, West Antarctica and the whole continent. We use three methods for our temperature reconstructions: (i) a temperature scaling based on the δ18O–temperature relationship output from an ECHAM5-wiso model simulation nudged to ERA-Interim atmospheric reanalyses from 1979 to 2013, and adjusted for the West Antarctic Ice Sheet region to borehole temperature data, (ii) a temperature scaling of the isotopic normalized anomalies to the variance of the regional reanalysis temperature and (iii) a composite-plus-scaling approach used in a previous continent-scale reconstruction of Antarctic temperature since 1 CE but applied to the new Antarctic ice core database. Our new reconstructions confirm a significant cooling trend from 0 to 1900 CE across all Antarctic regions where records extend back into the 1st millennium, with the exception of the Wilkes Land coast and Weddell Sea coast regions. Within this long-term cooling trend from 0 to 1900 CE, we find that the warmest period occurs between 300 and 1000 CE, and the coldest interval occurs from 1200 to 1900 CE.
