Abstract

Within the framework of the first phase of MYRRHA (Multi-purpose hYbrid Research Reactor for High-tech Applications) project, called MINERVA, IJCLab was in charge of a fully equipped Spoke cryomodule prototype development, tested at 2K. It integrates two superconducting single spoke cavities, the RF power couplers and the Cold Tuning Systems associated. On the control side, a MTCA.4-based Low Level Radio Frequency (LLRF) system prototype and the Software/EPICS developments has been realized by IJCLab and the SCK CEN in collaboration with the company IOxOS Technologies. Abstract

The first phase of the MYRRHA (Multi-purpose hYbrid Research Reactor for High-tech Applications) project, MINERVA, was launched in September 2018. Through collaboration with the SCK-CEN, IN2P3 laboratories take in charge the developments of several parts of the accelerator, including a fully equipped Spoke cryomodule prototype and a cold valves box. This cryomodule will integrate two superconducting single spoke cavities operating at 2K, the RF power couplers and the cold tuning systems associated. For control and regulation purpose, a mTCA LLRF system prototype is being implemented and will be presented here alongside with the hardware, VHDL and EPICS developments that aim to fulfil MYRRHA's ambitious requirements., Comment: Poster presented at LLRF Workshop 2019 (LLRF2019, arXiv:1909.06754)

Abstract

Within the framework of the European, project MYRTE (MYRRHA Research and Transmutation Endeavour) of the H2020 program, a 4-Rods RFQ (Radio Frequency Quadrupole) has been designed at 176.1 MHz RFQ for accelerating up to 4 mA protons in CW (Continuous Wave) operation from 30 keV up to 1.5 MeV. A LLRF prototype has been developed to regulate the amplitude and the phase of the accelerator field into the RFQ and the frequency of the RFQ controlling the motor of the frequency tuner. They may lead to long-term consequences such as chronic pain, physical limitations, and poorer quality of life. They also account for a significant proportion of emergency department visits, representing between 18% and 25% of all visits, depending on country.Purpose: To assess the health-related quality of life of patients presenting to the emergency department with a MSKD, to convert their answers to utility scores and to explore the association between diverse socio-demographic and clinical variables and patients’ health-related quality of life.Patients and Methods: This is an analysis of cross-sectional data obtained during the baseline assessment performed as part of a 6-month pragmatic randomized controlled trial conducted in an academic emergency department. We included patients aged 18– 80 years with a minor MSKD. The main outcome measures were health-related quality of life (five dimensions: mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression) and utility scores (− 0.148 – worse than death, 0 – dead, 0.949 – perfect health) measured with the EQ-5D-5L. Possible associations were explored by comparing scores across subgroups based on certain socio-demographic (eg, age, gender, triage score) and clinical factors (eg, pain interference on function, pain intensity) and with reference values using descriptive statistics (mean, median), rankFD ANOVAs, and χ2 tests.Results: Sixty-nine participants completed the EQ-5D-5L. Mean and median utility scores were, respectively, 0.536 (95% CI: 0.479– 0.594) and 0.531 (IQR: 0.356– 0.760). Participants with higher levels of pain (< 4/10: 0.741, 95% CI: 0.501– 0.980; 4– 7/10: 0.572, 0.500– 0.644; > 7/10: 0.433, 0.347– 0.518) or pain interference on function (< 4/10: 0.685, 95% CI: 0.605– 0.764; 4– 7/10: 0.463, 0.394– 0.533; > 7/10: 0.294, 0.126– 0.463) presented significantly lower utility scores. No significant differences were found for other socio-demographic characteristics.Conclusion: In patients with MSKDs who present to the emergency department, higher levels of pain or pain interference are associated with decreased health-related quality of life. Calcium, magnesium and phosphorus serum levels are regularly performed tests in the emergency department, but their clinical relevance have come into question. Authors sought to determine risk factors that could predict abnormal calcium, magnesium and phosphorus serum levels, as well as identify patients who may need corrective interventions.Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in two academic hospitals in Québec City. Demographic and clinical characteristics of 1008 patients who had serum calcium and/or magnesium and/or phosphorus levels drawn by an emergency physician were collected. Multivariate logistic regression models were fitted to obtain adjusted odds ratios for each risk factor for abnormal calcium or magnesium or phosphorus blood levels, and for a required intervention.Results: Among patients for whom calcium, magnesium and phosphorus were tested in the Emergency Department, the most significant risk factors (OR> 2) for electrolytic abnormality were as follows: hypocalcemia – respiratory distress, diuretics (excluding loop and thiazide), anti-neoplastic medication, long QTc, chronic kidney disease (CKD); hypercalcemia – bone pain, vitamin D, hallucinations; hypomagnesemia – diabetes, corticosteroids; hypermagnesemia – poor extremity perfusion, CKD, furosemide; hypophosphatemia – seizure; hyperphosphatemia – phosphate-binders, CKD, peripheral vascular atherosclerotic disease. Of all patients tested, 3.4% received a corrective intervention initiated by the emergency physician. Predictors of intervention on an electrolyte abnormality include poor peripheral perfusion, nausea and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).Conclusion: Emergency physicians can potentially reduce the unnecessary testing of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus blood levels by targeting patients with high-acuity conditions or chronic comorbidities such as CKD, diabetes and COPD.Keywords: emergency medicine, metabolic, electrolyte, biochemistry

8. Treatment of Maize Seeds (Zea Mays) by Nonthermal Plasma Generated by Gliding Electric Discharge for Application in Agriculture

Abstract

The gliding arc (Glidarc) electric discharge generates nonthermal plasma at atmospheric pressure. This work proposes to investigate the effect of humid air Glidarc plasma on maize seeds by studying the early germination and the effect on maize pathogens potentially harmful. The seeds were treated for 300 and 900 s in spatial post-discharge mode. At the first sight, there was a coloration change of the surface of 900 s-treated seeds, which became darker than control ones. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed no change for 300-s-treated but significant changes for higher exposure (900 s) revealed by modification of the etched/eroded surface of the starch caryopsis resulting in water holes and large channels. The pathogenicity test through the fungal infection led to a degree of 58% for the untreated seeds and 6.7% and 13.3% for the seeds treated for 300 and 900 s, respectively, and, thus, an important load reduction of fungi when the seeds were pretreated. Then, germination percentage (GP) along the early growth parameters was evaluated and the results showed that under laboratory conditions, these parameters increased by 4.6%–17.4% for GP, 5.8%–36.7% for shoot length, and 1%–12.9% for root length. Furthermore, the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed no change in the bonds between atoms after the plasma treatment but revealed a surface activation due to the degradation of lipids. This application could contribute to the fight against food insecurity in Cameroon and in the world without using chemical additives.

Abstract

Objectives: To compare post-concussion symptoms (PCS) and return to normal activities between mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) patients with or without concomitant injuries at 7-and 90 days post-mTBI.Methods: Design: Sub-analysis of a multicentre prospective cohort study. Participants and setting: patients with mTBI from 7 Canadian Emergency Departments. Procedure: Research assistants conducted telephone follow-ups using the Rivermead Postconcussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ) at 7-, 30- and 90 days post-mTBI. Main outcome: Presence of PCS (RPQ: ≥3 symptoms) at 90 days. Secondary outcomes: RPQ score ≥21, prevalence of individual RPQ symptoms and patients' return to normal activities, at 7- and 90-days. Adjusted risk ratios (RR) were calculated.Results: 1725 mTBI patients were included and 1055 (61.1%) had concomitant injuries. Patients with concomitant injuries were at higher risk of having ≥3 symptoms on the RPQ (RR:1.26 [95% CI 1.01–1.58]) at 90 days. They were also at higher risk of experiencing specific symptoms (dizziness, fatigue, headaches and taking longer to think) and of non-return to their normal activities (RR:2.11 [95% CI 1.30–3.45]).Conclusion: Patients with concomitant injuries have slightly more PCS and seemed to be at higher risk of non-return to their normal activities 90 days, compared to patients without concomitant injuries. Abstract

The MYRRHA projects aims at the construction of an Accelerator Driven System demonstrator. The criticality will be sustained by an external spallation neutron flux; produced thanks to a 600 MeV high intensity proton beam. This beam will be delivered by a superconducting linac which must fulfil very stringent reliability requirements. To carry out “real scale” reliability-oriented experiments a 700 MHz Cryomodule was developed. Several tests were performed to commission the experimental set-up. We review here the obtained results and the lessons learnt by operating this module, as well as the on-going developments.
